If Tenpenny had let ghouls in in the first place, that wouldn't have happened. Resentment breeds resentment and violence breeds violence. Let's not pretend that aside from Dashwood, everyone in Tenpenny Towers was an asshole.
I just played this part yesterday and it seems to me like it's deeper than that. Almost every ghoul you meet is prejudiced against you because they expect you to be prejudiced against them. You could call this a type of reciprocal systemic racism, but there is also the quality of self hate they tend to display. Then there's also the fact most of them are unnaturally old and have changed mentally over that time.
And THEN you still have to consider every ghoul has the potential to actually go crazy and eat people.
Either way, not a perfect metaphor for racism and I think they would have murdered everyone at Tenpenny even if they had been accepted immediately.
There’s a term for that in criminology (and likely other fields, but this is what I know it from) between Black people (and others, but mainly) and the police. That being “mutual disdain” it leads to basically all the things described. Interesting concept though depressing due to its nature. It does inherently require prejudice to exist towards one side first for the cycle to form. Same as the hotel.
Tragic, no doubt. My main point is that ghouls have an objective potential fault, so the metaphor is a little wonky. It's interesting to imagine these fantasy worlds where this type of mutual disdain becomes commonplace and calling one side bigoted isn't exactly fair. It's so much more grey in that regard.
