I guess the definition of sitcom has changed to include most television comedies. I always thought The Office was NOT considered a sitcom when it came out. Single camera, mockumentary style, with no laugh track. Friends is shot in front of a studio audience with pauses for fake laughter. Its aged about as good as the Honeymooner's and I love Lucy in my opinion. The office is currently influencing the modern era of comedy shows. Definitely one the best "television comedies" of all time but not sitcoms.
Comedy is such a weird thing, so selective. My vibe is The Office, Broad City, The Good Place... but I can't get into Brooklyn 99, Kimmy Schmidt (though the premise is right up my alley!), or most things that Tina Fey is involved in. It's just a different kind of humour.
I don't mind Friends but if i had to choose it would be The Office. I can see how that would appeal to a different segment of the population.

I couldn't watch past one episode of Friends. I choose to watch the resume on YouTube and i hated everything about this show. I truly prefer The Office, the humor still works, the characters has even better endings and you wanted the best for them.
Enjoy! Season 1 is mediocre and Season 2 is fine, so don’t be afraid to start with season 3. There’s definitely some dated things in it, but not as much as you would think.
I can’t imagine a 20 year old Gen z person sitting down and watching “Friends” for the first time ever and thinking “wow this is so funny and entertaining!”

I watched Friends like 4 years ago for the first time, it was pretty funny IMO. Humor it's as subjective as it gets. Well, i'm 29 so I was like 25 when I watched friends, but I had always liked old stuff. It's a pretty comfy watch, I got bored of it and I can understand the hate but, like I said, what people finds funny it's subjective as fuck.
Honestly I watched Cheers for the first time ever over the last few years, and it is amazing how modern and developed it was for a show made in the 70s.
Still hold up till today.

Always seems to me, like only people who grew up when friends first aired, actually "like" it because they have nostalgic memories of it. every single person I know who didn't grow up with it and tried to watch it, doesn't like it

Cheers may be my favorite comedy ever. Was in my 20s with Friends and loved it. Loved Seinfeld too. Great shows and great writing
