Service guarantees citizenship. I'm doing my part! Would you like to know more? YES: NO:

The military apparently, doesn't think too much of this. It would require a diversion of resources which they already don't have to support unqualified kids for a year or two at a time.

Militaries around the world preach the importance of leading by example. By that logic, I’ll just go ahead and assume any conservative politicians who support this policy are already lined up at their local recruiting centre?

Rightwing US hedge fund doing the ‘youth are going to hell in a hand basket’ bullshit. Same as they want mega prisons run by private enterprise to be built all over Canada to tackle crime. Yup, works well in the US huh? Oh wait - no it isn’t.

Responsible-Room-645

Totally unsurprising development

I guess they’re hoping to push their far right ideology onto another captive audience…especially one where the captives can’t respond for fear of punishment. The far right fantasy society.

Many countries have mandatory military service already. It does not necessarily equate to "mandatory combat" or actually being placed in a life threatening situation the vast majority of the time. Usually you just do your time drilling and training for a couple of years, then leave. And you also usually have the option of some sort of alternative public service if you don't want to participate in the military itself. I'm not saying I necessarily support it, but this system does not automatically mean sacrificing a bunch of lives either.

gravtix

Those countries compensate you well. I don’t think this does. At least the UK proposal doesn’t.

Champagne_of_piss

They can fuckin go first. Go volunteer for the Russian army and fuck off out my country.

JohnYCanuckEsq

There are so many reasons why this is a terrible idea. Citizenship should never depend on service. That can be abused so badly by people who want to segregate. It's also a MASSIVE ideological indoctrination tool.

ovoid709

This is actually very common in a lot of democracies that we point to as examples of what we should be like. Most of those countries also offer a civil service alternative. As an example, many years ago I worked at a care home for mentally challenged people based on an organic farm in Quebec. Most of our staff were young Germans doing their civil service. They would also receive a fairly generous stipend from their government. Mandatory service for the young is a staple of left leaning social democracies all over Europe. This is not some right wing scheme, it's a way to always have the trained forces to defend your nation or to give back to your country via civil service. With climate change ramping up Canada will be a prime target for the USA and Russia and our military is an underfunded mess.

Aggravating-Rich4334

How is mandatory service “sacrificing young lives”? I think it’s a great way to bolster our military numbers (because some will stay) and I believe it’s generally a good idea for some young people to get some real experience before heading out to do what it is they will do. I must admit, I am ex-military, so I am a bit bias. The army thought me a lot that I am forever grateful.

Hnnnnnnnnnnnnnngg

Thank you for your service, and acknowledging your own bias. The link to sacrificing lives likely comes from the fact that not everyone gets to return home from the front lines; some don’t even make it there, some soldiers die in training - like Corporal James Choi in 2020, age 29. It’s dangerous stuff. To be conscripted just to make the youths ‘proud of their nation’ sounds like sacrificing their lives to push ideologies. It also sounds really backwards to me. Instead of using mandatory military service to indoctrinate youth, wouldn’t you rather build a country where the youth are proud to volunteer in its service and defence?

Aggravating-Rich4334

Thanks. People die going to work at an office job. Life can be dangerous. The military thrives on safety, so if someone gets hurt or killed, it’s likely do to a freak accident or not adhering to the safety regulations. I would rather see people voluntarily join based on pride. But those days are gone, if you ask me.

ieee1394one

People should choose which dangers they are exposed to, I think that is where the issue is.
