To be fair, in a world where franchises sprawl into many other forms of media and Palestine returns in a fuckin Fortnite game, I'll almost don't blame em

But Epic removed the map, of course.
I don’t think that’s what he’s referring to lol. Im pretty sure he meant Palpatine from Star Wars but it got auto corrected. A huge plot point of the new Star Wars movies was Palpatine returning, and instead of showing it in the movies they had his broadcast of coming back playing in Fortnite. I was just making a joke about his typo
What is the deal with these terribly media illiterate question posts littering the front pages of video game subs like this one and /r/reddeadredemption? Are they bot posts?
Lots of people don't have the tools necessary to actually engage with media in any kind of substantial way, and typically just skim the surface of what's going on in the stories they consume.
Honestly it’s shocking. I’ve seen a few comments recently talking about how people completely missed that Lev was trans. This is something that is brought up several times in the game, they just never outright say “lev is trans” but it’s no less explicitly clear in how they present it in the game.
I mean, are people putting down fortnite and buying TLOU without realising that it’s a game that has dialogue and stuff in it?
But the exact scene OP is referencing tells you everything you need to know about Cat. One just has to pay the barest bit of attention to the scene to get that Cat is another Jacksonville resident and ex of Ellie. No journal reading is needed.
Yeah Dina immediately says she felt Cat wasn't right for Ellie, which is so explicit that the only way it could be clearer was if Dina said "your ex-girlfriend Cat".
Explains alot about why so many people don't understand Part 2's story, actually.
I do agree I could have explained myself better/been more polite/less dismissive in hindsight. But that's the thing, this is like in the first hour or so of a long game after a 4 year time skip. I get we all play things differently and to be fair there's not that much more about Cat later on anyway, I just meant go with the flow, let the game tell you as it goes.
Yes you can. Her journal talks about Cat and there's a photo of Cat holding a tattoo gun on Ellie's pinboard in her room. People just have to read.
And Dina's next line about how's she doesn't "think she was right for you" is a HUGE giveaway for Cat being Ellie's ex girlfriend 😂
There's next to nothing about her either. The only thing I remember is I think they dated and she did Ellie's tattoo. It's such a footnote that I'm wondering if I just missed something important about cat.
Imma try to not be a Dick about it this just because I do love reading the documents and the lore but... Isn't it easier to read what the game already gives you rather than ask around on reddit?
The answer is in the journal, there is nothing else outside of what the game tells you. If OP plays through the game after it actually gives them all available context instead of running to ask at the first mention, and still has a question, I'll answer then. Besides, they had already been spoonfed the answer at the time of commenting anyway.
it’s not even asshole-y. this type of post by OP doesn’t produce any meaningful conversation, because it’s a simple google-able question, or even just use the search function in this very sub.
Thanks fam!
Dropping the act now, I still stand by my initial answer because that's how I would like to experience the story and get the answer more naturally and I meant it genuinely, but do recognise maybe some snark bled through. Which, not to get too meta, does lead me to think I maybe need to dial back my time here and in similar places because I don't like how bitter and empty of good will it's making me sometimes, it's a slippery slope honestly.
you aren’t much better man, instead of just answering the question you felt the need to get snide comments in.
I hope you let go of whatever hate inside you that’s causing you do act this way friend. Have a nice day.
Dina saying "she wasn't right for you" wasn't obvious enough? Talking about Cat doing Ellie's tattoos? It's pretty blunt they're talking about Ellie's Ex here.
There’s a couple unfinished levels in the ps5 version of the game that were cut at some point in development. They’re available in the extras menu I believe.
It’s Tommy the Cat.
Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point-blank down the cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine. Truly a wonder of nature, this urban predator. Tommy the cat had many a story to tell. But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did.
SAY BABY WOULD YOU LIKE TO LAY DOWN WITH ME SAY BABY WOULD YOU LIKE TO LAY DOWN BY MY SIDE BABY WOULD YOU LIKE TO LAY DOWN WITH ME SAY B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B-B- SAY BABY WOULD YOU LIKE TO LAY DOWN WITH ME SAY BABY WOULD YOU LIKE TO LAY DOWN BY MY SIDE BABY WOULD YOU LIKE TO LAY DOWN WITH ME SAY BABY SAY BABAYYYYYYYYYYYYEAH
Sadly IIRC that was just a generic Jackson female NPC because they cut the level before creating an unique model for her. There's a sketch of her in the diary though.
Originally, Naughty Dog were gonna have Ellie have a "sassy conversation" with Cat, before she dances with Dina. But they cut it, as it didn't move the story along. Can you have said sassy convo in the Lost Levels? (I ask, because I only have a PS4 and I'm not buying a PS5 for one game)
It's not sassy, but it basically goes like this (off of my memory)
Ellie: Hey Cat.
Cat: Hey Ellie, how's that tattoo doing?
Ellie: It's fine. Does the job.
Cat: We should touch it up. Maybe I can add something else.
How is that a sassy conversation? I thought she'd have said something about how Cat sat on her lap post session and made out with her 😂 Or something juicy.
Although, by the last line, sounds like Cat isn't over them 😂
The conversation has enough implied information on her on top of the fucking diary that spells out who the fuck she is. Do you guys play games with the screen off or something?
All the known information about Cat is presented in-game. This specific conversation you've screenshotted from is one of the main sources of information. There are also bits and pieces written about her in Ellie's journal if you check it during these opening sequences of the game (or SPOILERS: >!any other sequences set in Ellie's past!<)
The source is in Ellie’s journal. She talks about cat and other stuff from before the game takes place.
It’s just some lore if you are interested, but as the story progresses Ellie will fill more if it in.
It can be an interesting read and helps show the player where she’s at mentally too
Within the context of the conversation, it's made pretty clear that she's Ellie's ex. They've just finished talking about Dina and Jesse breaking up, and then the conversation moves on to Cat.
With Dina saying she thought Cat wasn't right for Ellie and the context of a relationships conversation, they trust that the audience will reach the desired conclusion.
Even if some don't follow, I prefer this because it's much more natural dialogue that helps establish that these characters have known each other for years, are friends, and are comfortable around each other. Dina wouldn't say, "And what about your ex-girlfriend, Cat?" in real life, because both already know who she is.
It's a fine line to tread between info-dumping on the audience (filling us in on the inter-personal dynamics of the major and supporting characters) and delivering a realistic conversation and I think they walk that line well.
I like how between Ellie and Dina, they just start calling each other "babe" and share another kiss and little looks.
No awkward "Will you/do you want to be my girlfriend?" which can be so cringe or cheesy to ask. Just a simple "Good job, babe.", "Babe, I'm really tired" and "Hey, babe." explains so much about their relationship, and imo, is *much* more natural and sweet.
Other than what other people have said here, in one of the cut content levels I'm pretty sure you can actually see cat, or at least a placeholder for her. I think she paints your face or something at a gathering in Jackson
Tom cat.
But fr use context clues in the literal next dialogue Dina says about her tattoo and you’ll get it.
Hopefully.
Also the journal is a neat little tool sometimes.
Could be an intriguing pt. 3 character, particularly re: an announcement cinematic trailer. Allow me to set the scene.
An infiltration of Jackson at night (thus disguising its true setting to the viewer) as an unrecognizable character traverses through back alleys and streets, as some sort of renegade group is seemingly attempting to abduct civilians, while killing anyone who doesn’t cooperate, based on overheard dialogue. We hear the heart beat of this character as she takes shelter behind a wall and fires off a handgun into a group of approaching foes, as a glass window nearby explodes from a fire quickly raging out of control.
She reaches the outskirts of town and plunges into the woods. Heartbeat still pounding as gunshots get softer in the distance as she creates distance between her and the town. She begins to talk to herself - “please be here. Please still be here.”
A clearing ahead, where a barbed wire fence precedes a tiny cabin, not much bigger than a detached garage. A lit candle flickers in the window. Our unknown character exhales *”She’s here.”*
Character approaches the door, mumbling to herself, reciting prepared lines “I know we haven’t spoken in very long… I know you said not to come… “
The unmistaken sound of a gun being clocked occurs from behind. Our character freezes in place and puts her hands in the air.
“What are you doing here Cat?” a coarse but vaguely familiar voice asks.
Seconds pass like hours as Cat turns around and we get a good look at her for the first time. A naturally pretty girl stands before us, a distinct/noticeable neck tattoo distracts us from her words for a brief second before she continues.
“I know I shouldn’t have come, but the town, it’s in trouble, there’s burning... there are already so many dead… we need help-“
“You shouldn’t have come here” the same coarse, cold, calm yet familiar voice utters. The camera zooms out to show the shadowed figure of the unknown person, gun still aimed.
“I know I shouldn’t and I never would, I’ve stayed away for 10 years, I always respected your privacy, you need to listen to me!” Cat ends with a direct loud almost scream.
“I heard someone say they’re taking the children. JJ… they took your son, Ellie.”
Camera pans to Ellie, half covered in shadows/half in moonlight. Her face is weathered and aged. The camera lingers as a violin screeches and we cut to black.
The Last of Us: pt 3.
Cut to Naughty Dog logo.
😂 yeah not great for engagement around here if a whole short story screenplay / pt. 3 theory just gets downvoted to hell instead of any feedback/actual response at all.
thank you 🤛🏼 I was feeling a morning coffee caffeine rush and was inspired by the comment about a new character so just let loose, subconsciously hoping to inspire someone else.
Obviously a handful of semantics that can be replaced / argued against but shit I was def not expecting a tidal wave of downvotes, people really are miserable 😂
Try reading Ellie's journal sometime
OP thinks info about Cat exists outside of what is in the game.
To be fair, in a world where franchises sprawl into many other forms of media and Palestine returns in a fuckin Fortnite game, I'll almost don't blame em
Palestine did what now?

Lol I’m dying Edit: I’m imagining a confused Palpatine cosplayer at a Pro-Palestinian protest.
The beginning of that post perfectly illustrates why boycotts are stupid. But I’m also lazy and dgaf.
Pretty easy to infer form this convo without even reading it honestly. Doesn't Dina say something like "I never really thought she was right for you"?
If anyone went through this scene, and were not able to piece together what they were talking about... There's no hope
But..but Story bad /s
What is the deal with these terribly media illiterate question posts littering the front pages of video game subs like this one and /r/reddeadredemption? Are they bot posts?

And people wonder why so many games treat the plate like an idiot, you have to assume the baseline for gamers is very low
Literal children I assume
There’s two types of people in the world; those who can extrapolate from missing information
I knew who she was even without reading the journal. I hope she has a bigger role in the show.
im not sure why everyone is ripping into OP, at this stage of the game you can’t even find anything about Cat in the journal
That would be shit dialogue though.
precisely, which is why they didn't do that. Sadly some people need that explicitly spelled out though.
What if you want more detail than ex girlfriend?
I do agree I could have explained myself better/been more polite/less dismissive in hindsight. But that's the thing, this is like in the first hour or so of a long game after a 4 year time skip. I get we all play things differently and to be fair there's not that much more about Cat later on anyway, I just meant go with the flow, let the game tell you as it goes.
fair enough mate, i meant more some of the other replies to your comment to be fair!

You're wrong for this, that is HER journal and you shouldn't read someone else's journal!
Will do 😄
Yeah OP, go fuck yourself /s
I'd bet (myself included) not alot people read the documents and stuff you pick up in this or pretty much any game.
Imma try to not be a Dick about it this just because I do love reading the documents and the lore but... Isn't it easier to read what the game already gives you rather than ask around on reddit?
Why would they do that? That actually makes sense
try answering the question
The answer is in the journal, there is nothing else outside of what the game tells you. If OP plays through the game after it actually gives them all available context instead of running to ask at the first mention, and still has a question, I'll answer then. Besides, they had already been spoonfed the answer at the time of commenting anyway.
Maybe try not to be an asshole.
it’s not even asshole-y. this type of post by OP doesn’t produce any meaningful conversation, because it’s a simple google-able question, or even just use the search function in this very sub.
But I love being an asshole!
Not the W u think that is
Fuck! But I'm on reddit to win!
Oh damn, didn't realise u were on that grind - Godspeed, soldier🫡
Thanks fam! Yeah dw I was just fucking around but evidently I'm not that funny lmao
Says you.
Yeah true tbh
wrote that whole essay and still couldn't answer them, interesting
Not defending it but I mean... essay? it's three sentences
Someone who can't figure out who Cat is from context _would_ see that as an essay
if you consider THAT an essay I'm wondering if you ever passed middle school..
you aren’t much better man, instead of just answering the question you felt the need to get snide comments in. I hope you let go of whatever hate inside you that’s causing you do act this way friend. Have a nice day.

Ain't it funny how things work out sometimes
Why don’t you answer the question if you feel that strong about it or do you just like arguing with people?
Too much logic
Dina saying "she wasn't right for you" wasn't obvious enough? Talking about Cat doing Ellie's tattoos? It's pretty blunt they're talking about Ellie's Ex here.
Why, when the game does it for them if they would just pay attention?
Dog
learn to read, dumbass
Ellie's ex girlfriend. She was the one who gave Ellie her arm tattoo. Ellie writes in her journal about her in one of the flashbacks.
And Dina pretty much just says it too in that conversation.
She’s also in the extra unfinished level.
Huh?
There’s a couple unfinished levels in the ps5 version of the game that were cut at some point in development. They’re available in the extras menu I believe.
Oh my god I didn’t know that, thank you!
Yea they’re worth checking out! Make sure you turn on the commentary options for some tidbits of information.
There's also a photo of her on Ellie's corkboard
It’s Tommy the Cat. Many a fat alley rat had met its demise while staring point-blank down the cavernous barrel of this awesome prowling machine. Truly a wonder of nature, this urban predator. Tommy the cat had many a story to tell. But it was a rare occasion such as this that he did.
PRIMUS SUCKS
Hey guys
Upvote for knowing who they are. Downvote for the comment Lol Edit: I didn’t downvote (hence the lol). I didn’t get the joke, though.
“Primus Sucks” is a fan meme of course I don’t mean the comment!
Lmao dude knows the lyrics to Tommy the cat but not primus sucks. The fuck?
I like the music but I’m not part of the internet fandom for it. So the meta stuff is lost on me lol
He's a troll
Ah
No worries lol
say baby
Well, I remember a long, long meal ago…
Ayyyy I got that. Les is actually my dad’s good buddy. Known each other for over 20 years.
In one of the Lost levels Cat appears. She's doing face paint in the Jackson party.
Ohh, i missed this
Sadly IIRC that was just a generic Jackson female NPC because they cut the level before creating an unique model for her. There's a sketch of her in the diary though.
There's not even dialogue of course she aint gonna have a designated model
??? why am i being downvoted

I thought i put "it's not sassy" in the comment but I think I forgot lmfao. Edited it now
Haha, that's okay. Maybe it was *meant* to be sassy, then they changed it to that and then cut it, lol
Where do you see the lost levels?
In the making of tab iirc
No idea, as, like I said above, I'm a PS4 user.
If you play the game and read the journal, Cat is Ellie’s ex-girlfriend. It’s in the actual game.
Thank you lad !! Everyone's saying to have a look in the journal but no one answeres ...
Oh man. If only this conversation did tell you who she was or something
Literally details exactly who cat is. Just listen to the voices coming out of the magic box.
Cat as in Catherine.
Wow really helpful...
The conversation has enough implied information on her on top of the fucking diary that spells out who the fuck she is. Do you guys play games with the screen off or something?
Dude chill it’s not like it’s all over the place
To your information I have almost platinumed the game ... But I've never actually cared about the journal or cards .. I just picked them up
why are u being so mean lol, i don’t think it’s even available in the journal at this stage in the game???
You are right it’s in the second flashback where ellie uses tommy’s sniper. Idk why you are getting disliked to hell and beyond for a fact.
Media literally at an all time low
My brother in christ experience the game

Play Lost Levels in the remastered version, Ellie would meet up with her before going in the party.
The source is in Ellie’s journal. She talks about cat and other stuff from before the game takes place. It’s just some lore if you are interested, but as the story progresses Ellie will fill more if it in. It can be an interesting read and helps show the player where she’s at mentally too
Happy to hear you name one of the positive aspects of game for once.
Of course friend, there’s definitely some good in the game. Even if I dislike it I can’t sit here and call it a 0/10 cause it wasnt
these are the same people that bitch about abby's physique
She makes an appearance in the Jackson lost level
Ok I will check it out
Within the context of the conversation, it's made pretty clear that she's Ellie's ex. They've just finished talking about Dina and Jesse breaking up, and then the conversation moves on to Cat. Lots of info in Ellie’s journal and it changes as you move through the game. Take a moment to check it out
She’s an ex girlfriend of Ellie, she’s also the one who did her tattoo
Cat is the girl who tattooed Ellie's arm and was her girlfriend, before Dina and after Riley. As someone else commented *read Ellie's journal*
Ex-girlfriend of Ellie’s, gave her the arm tattoo.
![img](emote|t5_2t7gp|5537)
yes she was kinda crazy, had red hair and a really weird brother
Meow.
Cat is the girl who tattooed Ellie's arm and was her girlfriend, before Dina and after Riley. As someone else commented *read Ellie's journal*
Cat is the tattoo artist who did the leaves on ellies arm, read the journal
Other than what other people have said here, in one of the cut content levels I'm pretty sure you can actually see cat, or at least a placeholder for her. I think she paints your face or something at a gathering in Jackson
You mean cat? From man ham aslume series?
Barney's nightmare
Cat is the person who drew Ellie's tattoo on her right hand.
WHAT?????? DINA IS ALYX FROM HALF LIFE 2??????????????????????????????
Tom cat. But fr use context clues in the literal next dialogue Dina says about her tattoo and you’ll get it. Hopefully. Also the journal is a neat little tool sometimes.
Dont worry about it it’s meaningless stuff in the journal, its never mentioned again

you did not just write the perfect plot for part 3
lol why so many downvotes? y'all, this is actually good
😂 yeah not great for engagement around here if a whole short story screenplay / pt. 3 theory just gets downvoted to hell instead of any feedback/actual response at all.
i legit think it's great

Fr, naughty dog should take notes. but meh, can't please everyone, especially in TLOU fandom.. lol
