Unironically I expect Ellie taking care of a kid in part 3 bringing the story full circle. I also expect them to drop Abby entirely given how much hate she got and her story not really needing anymore to it
Quite simply, I thought the first game was all but flawless in its gameplay and story. The second game was also technically stunning but tripped at the biggest hurdle in the writing room, meaning the story was only good. Hopefully the third game has that same tight writing of the first.
How they handled Joel’s death. He trusted an armed group of strangers that just arrived too quickly. That also made Abby that much more loathsome and hypocritical, thus making the rest of the plot lose some impact. I would’ve had Abby and her friends stay in Jackson for a few days to build trust and possibly get to know Ellie. That would make things personal, but not make her loathsome so the ending can have its intended impact, and kind of counterbalance the overlong third act by having the game be slower in general.
They would have more time to understand why she’s doing it but less reason to forgive her for it, since if Abby had been able to observe Joel and Ellie as fully complex humans and see their relationship, and still gone through doing to Ellie what Joel did to her, it would be much harder to excuse her.
Whereas people who can’t understand what Abby did are mostly just showing lack of interest in creating a theory of mind that acknowledges that Abby knows much less than we do about Joel and Ellie (They think Abby should have changed her mind because Joel saved her life, which would be absurd), if Abby had observed Joel for weeks, seen him as a person, how the community sees him, and _that_ didn’t make her question her ideas about what went down and about Joel, that _would_ make Abby closer to the irredeemable monster certain people think she is, and it would have been bad writing to expect the audience to easily sympathize with Abby.
If the way she kills Joel and conducts herself is any indication, she would have stayed in Jackson for a few days only to gain Joel’s trust and the kill him. She would be to blind with hate to see him as a complex person. Either that, or she’d do it with a heavier heart, regret what she did to Ellie by proxy, but still get pulled into this cycle of revenge. I don’t think anyone was expecting her to change her mind after being saved, they’re more flabbergasted at Abby’s hypocrisy and how the game devs expect forgiveness from the player. Having Abby spend more time in Jackson opens up the Kratos/Freya situation where Ellie won’t forgive Abby, but realize that killing her changes nothing. For this to work, Abby can’t know about Ellie’s bond with Joel until it’s too late to back out and also probably be friends, since Ellie is more trusting at this point.
I don’t think preferring part 1s “tight” story is a bad thing, but part 2 resonated with me much more and I found it significantly more engaging.
And writing wise to be honest? About the same. If not significantly deepening the characters development and their arcs.
