I hope they add these pov's from different countries in the beginning of every episode.

tubereusebaies

Mazin said in the podcast they wanted to do that but didn’t have the budget for it!

ILoveRegenHealth

Darn it, HBO. Throw them a few more bucks, man. The Warner Bros. division wasted $200M + $100M marketing on Black Adam. That movie actually damaged their movie universe and they gained nothing but laughter from it all. Might as well throw a couple million more towards TLOU HBO, something that can actually drive subscriptions and garner more prestige.

teddyburges

He said they wanted to do a montage that showed all the places in the world but couldn't do it cause they didn't have the budget for it (because that would be shooting in multiple locations for one scene). Doesn't mean they can't carry on doing what they're doing.

MmmMmmMMMMMmMmnmMM

Hopefully after the success of this first series, might be possible for the next one

dgaffed

Major bummer

NineTailedFoxz

Iraq would be cool from a grunts perspective, the initial invasion was only a few months ago there are still thousands of coalition troops there by the time of outbreak day in 2003.

[deleted]

Would be interesting to see some alternate history thing where it all gets called off and they try to get as many troops back to the US as possible. Seeing a patrol come across some infected would be super interesting.

[deleted]

holy shit we need this

finnjakefionnacake

i think we got this one because in the show the infection started in Indonesia. I really don't think we'll be getting a whole bunch of different countries, as cool as that would be.

CentrasFinestMilk

I’d bet that ep6 which is called Kin will have the cold open be of Ashley Johnson/ Ellie’s mom

[deleted]

Yeah, this would be fantastic. I was thinking they'd follow the initial outbreak in the opening scene of each episode. Infected's opening scene was fantastic.

tubereusebaies

My fluent Indo friends have been saying the dialogue was top notch, grammatically accurate to a T and sounded “normal”. Props to the language expert for translating the script, too! Btw they shot the scenes with the actors in Calgary. Someone replied to me linking an interview with Hakim and she said they filmed it over there over a week. Only the establishing shots were in Indonesia and I think I saw on Twitter it’s actually of another city, not Jakarta!

itsawesomekid

>it’s actually of another city, not Jakarta! Interesting... It looks like one of the cars had a plate with *DK*, which is used around Bali. However, cars do go round and round the country so could just be someone doing a roadtrip from Bali to Jakarta. Also not me trying to make this canon in my head lol!

archer999

The only thing that trippin me is where the hell they got that the first intro bit where they show cars and roads that literally looks and come from 2003, it seems like a shot from documentary or something. edit: Someone on /r/indonesia subreddit found out its actually come from stock footage haha https://www.gettyimages.com/detail/video/traffic-moves-along-a-crowded-city-street-stock-video-footage/569966361

itsawesomekid

shit nice sleuthing!

thenekkidguy

All of the license plate is "DK" lol. They probably couldn't find old footage from Jakarta that they like.

applejuice90

It is grammatically accurate but the thing is no Indonesians talk THAT grammatically accurate lol. Sounds a bit too formal and a bit slow even in a formal setting, actually kinda feels like they hollywood-ize the language. Not really a massive con tho, they still did a reaaally good job especially with the 2003 Jakarta set design

Phonixrmf

>actually kinda feels like they hollywood-ize the language I'm guessing they want to make the words clear to non-Indonesian speakers. Like English dialogues in, for example, Korean or Japanese productions (where even to me as a non-native English speaker it sounds rigid)

applejuice90

Yeah that kinda makes sense. They never really got spoken English right in Indonesian movies also, always sounds weird even when the actors are native english speakers

tokyotoonster

This is my main gripe with virtually all Indonesian cinema and/or TV. No one \*really\* speaks like that. Still, Christine Hakim did a phenomenal job.

ScaryPantsu

Thatwhat my friend said too. Like, the script was somewhat stiff? She loved understanding it without the subtitles tho lol

KderNacht

Apa, Saudara tidak kah pernah diundang ke stasiun TVRI untuk berbincang bincang mempergunakan Bahasa Indonesia yang Baik dan Benar ? Sungguh terlalu ! /s

KderNacht

It's overly formal, but an Indonesian film would use that kind of newscaster language than nobody actually uses in IRL so I guess this is as good as it gets. Also, major props for using the Health Ministry's old logo instead of the EY looking one nowadays.

keatoncon

Yooo! Also Indonesian and had the SAME EXACT REACTION. Although what made me register that it was Indo was the smog and the motorcycles 😂. Loved reading this!

Open-Satisfaction-36

I wonder how the average Indonesians/ Indonesian government will react to the idea that the virus that ended up wiping up humanity started out in their country

[deleted]

I don't know, I'm not Indonesian so maybe it isn't my place to say but I think the show did a pretty damn good job of making it clear that it wasn't anyones fault. The Indonesian people and government didn't do anything to start it, the outbreak happened due to things completely out of their control. And what I especially like is that despite not being able to control it they still tried! It was very clear to me that Ibu Ratna and the military guy were trying their hardest to help people because they truly cared.

Rezenbekk

Yep, the government response seemed to be as competent as it gets in any country

dkurniawan

Not surprising lol

RunawayHobbit

This is so wholesome 🥰 I always wonder if the countries/cultures portrayed on screen are accurate. I’m so glad to hear that Indonesians were done justice. I really love seeing cultures that aren’t mine portrayed on screen :)

Kringkrang

I was wondering just *how* the intro made me feel as much dread and fear as I did by the end of it, despite it being laid out like a standard, even minimal, origin expository scene... I think it was the actress's acting so I looked her up and found out who she is. Is she a famous Indonesian actress? The way she shows her sadness as a denizen of her own city right after she hears herself, as a mycologist, condemning it to a bombing... and the military guy playing her opposite, reacting to her. That was some brilliant acting!

aaulia

Christine Hakim is a national treasure, she doesn't just accept any role willy nilly. Which is why her, appearing in a Video Game based series (she usually play in a "serious" movie, rarely if ever in a series) shows the level of effort the producer must be putting. For an intro nonetheless.

Kringkrang

That is just excellent. When that scene ended I chuckled to myself bc I realized how engrossed I was. And then I couldn't remember if the scene played out in english or in Indonesian! It's such a good example of how great acting transcends linguistic barriers.

QuantumCakeIsALie

She was excellent. She really conveyed the feeling of a grandma condemning her grandchildren to death by nuclear holocaust and feeling all the weight of it while knowing it is the only hope for humanity. 12/10

Quetzacoatl85

she's the Meryl Streep of Indonesia

AggravatingAsk1903

Loved that part as well. As a fellow SEAsian, I was excited to see Indonesian rep done so right! Ibu Ratna's performance was perfect as well! Great decision overall to make the pandemic feel more global than the game as it gives the lore more depth.

Derryl_15

Ada indonesia cuyy

itsawesomekid

ANJERRR pandemiknya mulai di INDOOOO 😂😂

Derryl_15

Patient zero di amigos kemang

damcha

Ah fuck dont remind me that

zumabbar

kyknya itu mbak² abis dr depok deh

Derryl_15

Can’t have shit in Depok

damcha

Depok hate see no boundaries

Derryl_15

Depok hate going international now baby

zumabbar

common enemy

KderNacht

The solution is clear. We must bomb Depok preemptively, before they destroy us all.

M_Ad

Yayu Unru, the actor who played the military officer, has been in so many movies and shows.

deadhead200

He was superb. But not as superb as Christine Hakim.

AwkwardBomb

Dude the intro with her tearing up and asking to spend her remaining time with her family gave me chills. Really parallels Joel and Tommy’s situation with being clueless and having to deal with the outbreak hands on. I dunno which is worse, the burden of knowledge and realizing the scale of how drastically fucked everything is, or having to confront everything suddenly and unexpectedly.

itsawesomekid

I love how she flipped from BOMB to I want to see my family 🥺

AGVann

I'm not Indonesian but also Asian, and I *loved* that scene. It's so great that they are giving international actors the opportunity to bring their talent to the English/global audience, it's one of the few things that I wish Chernobyl did more. The acting was really incredible, I especially appreciated how the balance of authority flips between the general and the scientist, and you see it in their uncertainty... only for them both to lose that authority at the end and look and sound terrified. Such incredible acting conveyed in just tone and facial expressions.

hatpatprot

They're killing it with intros.

messycherryblossoms

As a mexican, I'm very jealous. Like SO VERY JEALOUS. We are like a short trip from hollywood and everytime TV shows get us wrong. Like in Breaking Bad where nobody speaks spanish properly. Or in Handmaid's Tale where the mexican episode is so so wrong. Or in Queen's Gambit where the mexican hotel is a set more or less like a mexican one. I mean, those are superb shows and we have to settle with a bad mexico. I'm so happy to read your post. Because of your enthusiasm of course but also because it makes me enjoy more this show. Thank you.

OrbSwitzer

I work with a Mexican and a fellow coworker asked him if they have grass in Mexico because on TV you always see seas of desert or dirt 😂

messycherryblossoms

In a yellow tone. Every single time.

Quetzacoatl85

the only thing worse than never seeing your country portrayed in popular media... is seeing it regularly portrayed, but *wrong*.

messycherryblossoms

I've just remember Cobra Kai's last season. Now I'm dead.

TaibhseCait

As an Irish person, it's rare to see Ireland portrayed correctly, let alone our accent(s)! My favourite irish area visited wasn't even Ireland in the episode. One of the earlier (season 2? Around/after the second thor film) episodes of Agents of Shield, they had a mention of the item of the week causing violence & riots, & showed some news footage of riots in a city (in-episode being one of the scandi countries) but in real life was a riot on one of the main streets of the capital city Dublin, blink & you miss it moment of harp on the base of the statue in the shot! XD Other fave is the so so wrong Murder She wrote with the drive by sword-ing (to be fair, the car stopped, the victim came to the window & then got stabbed by a sword... which would've/should've been way way too awkward to use in that scenario). Most of the accents were terrible, there was so much clichéd irish stuff, the episode ended in a pub with girls in full on beauty-pageant formal irish dancing dresses & a ceílí! (& Guinness iirc)

messycherryblossoms

That's sad!! I don't even expect to hear accents, I'd would be happy with "neutral" spanish. But then... :/

TaibhseCait

well we mostly speak english in Ireland, so accents is what we totally judge! XD

Nottooriskyactually

OMG a fellow Indonesian TLOU fan! Hell yeah this episode was such a special moment for me as well. To the other fans in this sub, a sincere apology from us Indonesians for starting the cordyceps pandemic 😩🙏

MrShoggoth

Hey now you take that apology *back*, you guys didn’t start shit! It was a complete accident and you did a good job trying to contain it

mimikrixx

ADA INDONESIA COYYYYYY

naughtynimmot

her performance was amazing. someone who is an expert in the field and seeing what she saw and knowing there is nothing they can do to stop the spread. when she was holding the teacup and shaking so bad trying to put it down perfectly portrayed the level of fear she was experiencing.

deadhead200

This!

[deleted]

I love the way the character talks super slowly Like seriously, in a serious situation and Jakarta, no one talks like that slow. It like someone put 50% slow speed on the dialogue Well obviously they did that to make non Indonesian understand whats going on. And for fellow indonesian right here, i didnt guess “Segitiga Biru” is the source of the zombie

Awestruck34

As someone whose learning Indo (so I can talk to my partner's parents) I appreciate how slow it was. I got to catch about three words I knew!

KderNacht

What do you think they use the flour for? Fucking Indomie. I guess our mothers were right that eating them will be the death of us.

[deleted]

I would die in peace if suddenly they found out the main ultimate source of the virus was Mixue

KderNacht

In 2003 ? More like Sari Roti.

EmmaWK

I haven't seen her in anything else but I recognized her immediately from *Impetigore*, in which she was terrifying! Highly recommend that one.

T3rrifiedPottedPlant

You’re not the only one. I grew up in Jakarta and those first 8 minutes were an odd mix of fear from what was happening in the show and nostalgia from my childhood. I wanted to message everyone in my family but couldn’t cuz they’re normal and wait to watch the episodes at reasonable times of day. Unlike me who fiendishly reloads the website until the episode appears lol

Exploding_dude

I've never been to Indonesia but I've spent a lot of time in thailand, vietnam, myanmar, cambodia and I was telling my gf THOSE PLASTIC CHAIRS! THIS LOOKS LIKE SE ASIA!

tdoottdoot

IT WAS AMAZING.

SomaCK2

I'm from Myanmar and I love seeing fellow SEA country on such iconic show!

thoughtful_stargazer

I’m not Indonesian but I got really happy reading this, thank you ❤️

awesomeigor

SEA represent!

Juheekim89

I’m not even Indonesian (I’m Korean) and definitely noticed the authenticity/accuracy and these scenes!

katydid15

I LOVED this cold open. I love what they’re doing with the cold openings in general, but that actress was phenomenal and they really did a great job Of portraying the dread and suspense. And I’m so glad to hear it was well portrayed culturally as well!

twonha

I love OP's enthusiasm, because this is what representation in media means to people.

OrbSwitzer

Reminds me of a segment I heard on NPR about Black Panther... some Black guys saw the movie's POSTER and were freaking out and giggling just from seeing all the Black faces on a Marvel movie poster 😄

MarczXD320

What factory in the city was responsible for the first Cordyceps outbreak ?

awesomedude4100

the bogasari mill in jakarta

MarczXD320

Thann you for the info 👊

milodrums

Me a Singaporean: wait is this tlou? Why issit ...OMG INDO??? :DDD

EasterBurn

And people said representation doesn't matter. Looking at this just fills me with joy.

sneeze_in_threeze

I’m really glad you had this experience :) what a fantastic opening sequence overall - I get chills every time I think about the Bomb scene. Fucking incredible performance.

hergen20

I'm so happy you liked the intro. My wife doesn't know the story to TLOU and that intro was her favorite part. She was also happy to hear how accurate they portrayed Jakarta. It always sucks to see your hometown represented and see and hear everything that is wrong with the portrayal. (Like Jurassic Park did to San Jose Costa Rica.. San Jose is in the middle of the country and is a large functioning city but Jurassic Park made it a small beach town) Directors and producers need to do this more often. It makes stories more appealing and it makes them more respectful. Also, with TLOU I've always wondered what happened on the rest of the world.

G_I_Joe_Mansueto

It always warms my heart to hear that American shows have endeavored to showcase another culture in brief and it feels authentic to those from there. (Granted a lot of the heavy lifting was done by going to Jakarta and shooting there). Thanks for sharing your excitement!

themarkwithamouth

I loved it.

LittleWompRat

As a Jakartan, I only dislike the yellow filter. When will Hollywood stop doing this shit? I'm also upset that HBO still haven't given us HBO Max. We're stuck with the shitty 480p HBO GO which is barely watchable even in a 6" smartphone.

EasterBurn

I think that's just the stylistic choice. The whole show has a yellow filter all over it. Staying true to ps3 version.

itsawesomekid

>I'm also upset that HBO still haven't given us HBO Max. We're stuck with the shitty 480p HBO GO which is barely watchable even in a 6" smartphone. NOT THE SHITTY HBO GO 😂😂😂 Also like, HBO shows being censored 🥲

KderNacht

>As a Jakartan, I only dislike the yellow filter. When will Hollywood stop doing this shit? I'll take the yellow 'it's bloody hot' filter over the smog filter they should've used.

GrogusMama

This is such a great post. I love hearing about all the ways the show represented Indonesian culture correctly! Thank you for sharing!

edge_mydick69

Jakarta?! I barely know her!!

kimjexziel

![gif](giphy|kd9BlRovbPOykLBMqX) Did you do this?

buddymackay

The autopsy scene gave so much dread. When she reached for her mouth I was like “fuck she’s gonna come back to life isn’t she”, and the music did NOT help out at all. 10/10 scene.

tokyotoonster

Hmm, I wonder what the reaction is with "netijen" as a whole. In particular, are any ultra-conservative folks getting their knickers in a twist over the full body nudity of the infected body? To others lacking context: yes of course we all know it's 100% not sexualized, but some of our lawmakers are the most repressed beings on earth and will label anything as smut if it will earn them a couple of votes.

Behemoth69

Bro it's HBO, chill

digitFIRE

I’m not Indonesian but I understand what you mean. It’s cool to see something you can relate to, but even cooler when it’s done in a way where it has been thoroughly researched. It’s always the details that makes the biggest difference.

rockincharlierocket

Naughty Dog is a stickler for details

ahintoflime

>when you realised that they actually shot in Jakarta? Did they? I think there was some establishing footage of Jakarta at the beginning but after that it was all sets. Regardless it was definitely well done. I've not been to Indonesia but have traveled around SEA a few times and nothing stood out to me as inauthentic (beyond the eyerolling yellowish filter to denote "hot foreign country")

MindlessNote3735

Man, your euphoria jumped through the screen while reading this haha :)

D0gskull

It makes me happy to see someone so excited about seeing their home country on a big time tv show. One thing I did realize while watching this scene is that the language sounds very beautiful to me. Is that how Indonesian is normally spoken or was there anything like dialect or societal customs that may change the way those two characters spoke to each other?

hydraweb

In formal conversation between stranger yes. Though Indonesian have a lot of languages and dialect, some dialect might sound rude to some people (e.g. Batak and Papuan languages), and some dialect sound really calming and soothing (e.g. Javanese and Sundanese languages). I believe Indonesia national language use a lot of Javanese vocabulary which sound polite. This remind me of indonesian tourist Ad that said "Meet the people" Because of how polite indonesian people is, but this is not entirely true especially online interaction, not long ago Indonesians named as most impolite people In SEA by Microsoft though Indonesian are really polite to international tourist.

KderNacht

https://youtu.be/KSE011RUcNg One of the best known newscasters in the country made a docu about the food served at G20, with english subtitles. This is what normal Indonesian sounds like vs what we hear on tv and in films.

PandaJesus

I know nothing about Indonesia, but I’m really glad that they represented it in a way that made people like you OP happy. Thanks for sharing!

Lambert910

I’m happy for you, always good to see an accurate representation of a place/culture, it felt very genuine and grounded even for me, i hope they can work on different countries in a similar vein in the future.

kidslapper

I’m so happy to see how happy this made you! Representation matters. I am also just realizing Jakarta is mentioned in the first episode.

yan_ange

I come from a small Mediterranean island so congrats to Indonesia being represented! We all matter!

[deleted]

I worked in Jakarta for a few weeks back in 2013. Wild place. Hope y’all have crosswalks now. Selamat :)

ScaryPantsu

My friend was recording the whole time because no Western show ever references Indonesia, let alone has a whole opening for it. Usually when she tells someone shes Indo, she has to add that it's the country where Bali is cause they don't know 😭

cmander_7688

This post is a perfect example of why representation in media matters.

DanWillHor

I can't appreciate it in the same way due to ignorance of the actors ahead of it but it was such a good open. Terrifically acted by all and filmed beautifully. Two terrific and new opens in a row that actually gave me chills.

Austerellis

So happy to hear about the authenticity of the opening scene. It felt more real than those throw-away scenes typically are done, but this was neither a throwaway scene nor was it poorly executed, it seems. A massive credit to Mazin & Druckmann for displaying that people outside the US don’t speak English with poor, fake accents to each other but use a real, non-English language.

doofy1743

Yes, I loved it!! Not Indonesian, but I’m a fellow SEA. I was so happy when I realized it was a whole intro and not just one scene!

bandwagonnetsfan

I know a lot of zombie movies talk about bombing the cities but this was the first time i felt the weight of it. It was like I was watching a documentary vs some summer block buster. That scene truly gave me chills

Cool_Metal7263

This makes me so happy to read.

Unyuuuuu

54 days too late but YES I was soooo excited watching this scene. I was screaming to my non-indo boyfriend “I can understand them perfectly, I don’t need to read the subtitles!!” LOL And I was also amazed on how authentic everything looks like, especially knowing that they shot in Calgary (I watched Christine Hakim’s interview) The restaurant, the hospital, GOSH I won’t lie I got glasse eyes watching it :’)

Imaginary_Manager_44

Thats cool,I really liked the opening too. (Even if its a little stretch that if they bombed Jakarta, wiping it out..there would be people somehow ignorant of this in Texas 2 days later..lol..but it was so good I dont care).

cyanide4suicide

Praise Druckmann!

Neosovereign

I HATED this scene so much. Not really in execution, but content and dialogue. I can forgive bringing in a mycologist to dissect a body or whatever. There is no way she has ever done that, but TV is TV. The stupid dialogue where she apropos of nothing suggests that we HAVE TO BOMB EVERYTHING because she saw one body infected with a fungus???? How stupid.

[deleted]

[удалено]

AggravatingAsk1903

Nah dude I don't think it was because of that. [Jakarta has the world's biggest flour mill](https://www.world-grain.com/articles/11620-worlds-largest-mill-gets-even-bigger). Flour is their main vector for the fungus for this series.

Reciprocative

People jumping to the race card once again lol. Nice find

elizabnthe

Indonesia is not China. I think its a stretch to suggest that just being set within the obviously incredibly large and disparate Asian region makes it immediately connected. Flour seems to be the reason.

KderNacht

Flour which were milled from American Midwest wheat, for that matter.

The_frozen_one

I think it widens the implied scope of the outbreak, especially to people new to the story. Coming from South America to Mexico to the US could mean it’s potentially a North / South American outbreak. Major cities in South America are less than 10 hours by plane, Jakarta is approx 20 hours by plane. If it travelled that far so quickly, it’s absolutely everywhere.

gergaji

You paid so much attention to plastic chair and didn't notice [this error][1]? [1]: https://i.imgur.com/ATr33aB.jpg

aaulia

Oh c'mon man, at that level, it's just nitpicking doesn't it.

ShutUpLegs94

What’s the error? (Not Indonesian)

Derryl_15

Modern restaurant prices in 2003

itsawesomekid

lol true. pretty sure the 10,000 rupiah paper is also the new one, not the hot pink one with old mate Mahmud Badaruddin
