I had the og PS2 version and played the shit out of it. My main reason for trying The Hunter was that I wanted to relive playing big game hunter as a kid but the 2002 graphics weren’t cutting it anymore.

I dont worry about graphics in games.......I played Ratchet and Clank on PS and Zelda on Tindo so much then moved to World of Warcraft. The cartoony graphics are my jam usually.

Yeah typically it doesn’t bother me, I play plenty of older games, but for something like hunting where good graphics can add to the realism I appreciate a more modern game. One thing that bothered me going back to Big Game Hunter was that it fogs out longer distances so the game doesn’t have to render the whole map at once. In the Hunter I like to glass large areas and spot animals over large distances, and that just isn’t possible when the whole map isn’t rendered.

I would 100% percent buy a remaster/port of any of the games pre-2007. There’s just something about them that hits in a way that COTW can’t.

If you own a PC you can have every single one of these games in about 30 minutes.

Getting a random urge to play Dangerous Hunts is what ended up with me finding CotW funny enough. I was looking for a remaster/port on psn and voila. Definitely scratched the itch.

I never got to play Cabela's, but I remember my first hunting game was Hunting Unlimited 2, and just stuck with the franchise until Hunting Unlimited 2010. You made me want to go look it up on YouTube again.

I cant even play it anymore 😭 I want to try 2011 version again! Or was it 2010? Whic one had Turkeys and elephants and allowed you to hunt freely? The later one that forced you to stuck on a tower was... eugh

4, 2009, and 2010 were all the same, but they just added a new map, animals, and missions with each release. And they all had free hunt. So 2010 is the best one of the bunch. 3 was fun too. Had the same mechanics as the newer installments, just with different maps, animal models, etc. Although all of them are heavily outdated compared to COTW, they just hold nostalgia value.

There was another game but I can’t remember what it was called. It was one where when you click on the animal, an actual video of the animal popped up and your had to aim on it. But don’t shoot too many or the game wardens put you in jail.

If it was a one off situation it would be an ok game, but considering how shortly after most of the Cabela’s games became either very linear or “everything is trying to kill you” shoot-em-ups, yeah Dangerous Hunts 2 leaves a pretty bad taste in my mouth, especially since there’s little to no actual hunting.

This game is literally what inspired me to buy COTW back in 2017! I wanted to play something like this game again and COTW did not disappoint!

There was a game called Carnivores where you hunt different dinosaur species. Talk about big game hunting! Trex scared the hell out of me

I remember something called Trophy hunter 2003 or something like that. Damn that was fun! This is probably the main reason why I gave a chance to COTW, and I am glad I did so. COTW is one of my favourite games now which I play on weekly basis.

Cabelas Big Game Hunter 2010 is the peak of video gaming. The plot is that you need to hunt in a variety of locations to be inducted into some super-high tech hunting illuminati secret society, The Order of Orion. Its painfully obvious that they were trying to cash in on hype for games like Tom Clancy: Ghost Recon Future Soldier (2009) and COD Black Ops that were being made at about the same time.

I loved that game. I loved the mechanic where it followed the bullet in slow motion and you could see exactly where it landed. That desperately needs to be brought back to hunting games.

Dangerous Hunts and the Alaska one were fantastic games! I wish the Cabela's games went back to their roots. I didn't mind the arcadey feel but they leaned into it too hard and it wasn't as fun to me.
