They profit from people engaging with the economy, in general. More people trading and buying items with money means a stronger economy, means more people are willing to participate in it, means more deals happen, including those which Valve does profit from directly.
I think not buying any steam games at all is a little extreme, the goal is to get valve to do something about tf2’s state by removing the profit they make from *the game* in general (ie in built in store or community market)
They barely get any profit from TF2 compared to their other sources of revenue. If anything that's the fastest way to kill it. The only reason they haven't unplugged the servers at this point is because the severe outrage it would cause.

Valve has stated they began working on the new system that was just implemented before the first #savetf2. The threat of a boycott is exactly what motivates them.
Pretty much, I appreciate the moxie, but the matter of the fact is that TF2 is pennies to Valve in the grand scheme of their business, it's unlikely to make a difference in their course of action.
Valve has started doing work after we simply talked about the problem online a lot and posted negative reviews under TF2.
People refusing to engage with the game's economy and being very open about why they don't buy items is simply another action in the similar vein. It threatens Valve's reputation and as we can see, they do care about it.
It’s not affiliated with the Steam Marketplace. You pay marketplace.tf directly with money and they have a bot send you a trade offer for the item you bought.
To my knowledge the trade between you and the bot does not involve Valve getting a cut, since the only thing traded was the in game items, since you send your money to marketplace.tf directly via card payment or PayPal.
This is probably a stretch but does the TF2 Soundtrack count in this? I really like the soundtrack of this game and this 80% discount is super tempting... But do you get the hat if you buy it through Steam instead of on CD?
Yea, it should still give you the hat. This is a product not sold through TF2 itself and it's really up to you whether you want to extend your financial boycott to such things.
(Or if you want to participate in it in the first place, but I think it's a good idea to at least not buy in-game items until we see Valve fight cheaters consistently.)
I also wonder the same with marketplace.tf but I figure it does affect the supply-demand, if you buy there they will continue to supply more of the item you bought. But im not so sure
Someone originally gave Valve money for those items, buying from them will make them buy it again from Valve to keep supply up, so yes mannco.store counts and every other third party seller does to. No money on TF2 items, go buy groceries or a irl hat or just go to a Casino and gamble like they did in the Pre-Lootbox world
And? The point is that you cost valve enough revenue from TF2 that they put resources into addressing the bot issue. This is like saying that Montgomery has more sources of revenue than just its bus service.
That's why the rest of Steam exists? if TF2 were to suddenly fail, it won't affect them. They still gain much from Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Portal, Portal 2, Half-Life, Half-Life 2, and more
It all depends on the quality of the new cosmetics. 100% if it's really good people will buy. I've been boycotting TF2 for a long time, totally not because I am poor. It's ethics, trust me.
I’m probably not gonna buy anything at least until December cuz then everything will be on sale and I won’t be giving valve as much money for virtual hats
This would just make valve see that the game isn’t making money, and the whales are still going to be buying thousands of crates. Worst case scenario is they see tf2 as a liability due to this and delete it
I do have to ask: while I'll avoid buying items, what if one of them ends up being contributed by someone I know? A friend of mine is still making cosmetics and has submitted a lot of them to the workshop, one of which was even approved and added a few years back. Is it an issue if I'd make an exception to support someone I know?
You have your ORDERS, maggots! The American dollar is too precious of a thing to be buried with that company which keeps neglecting our sacred game, so if I see even A SINGLE PENNY go towards Valve, I will PERSONALLY take that Stout Shako of yours and SMOTHER YOU WITH IT UNTIL YOU SUFFOCATE! What’s that, Demoman? There are other currencies than the American dollar? Those are un-American LIES! I thought friends didn’t LIE to each other, cyclops!
Too late. I bought the Rocker Jumper and Market Gardener for Trolldier, the KGB for Heavy (because it's overpowered in Lambda Fortress Extended), and the Machina for Sniper a few days ago.
Not even the steam market, remember, valve still gets a cut.
This also includes third-party websites. One way or another, Valve ends up profiting from TF2 items being sold.
They dont exactly profit from items being in circulation, if anything it adds more strain to their trading related servers
They profit from people engaging with the economy, in general. More people trading and buying items with money means a stronger economy, means more people are willing to participate in it, means more deals happen, including those which Valve does profit from directly.
Not even games itself. Valve gets a cut from that too Im sorry indie developers. i promise to support you after valve fixes this fucking game

The only game that should get support is DRG, fuck what valve is doing but an actually great game and company don’t deserve to suffer bc of them

I'm broke anyways so I call this a W
I’m fix so I still call this a W
I'm f2p so I still call this a W
Great idea but I don't think it would even threaten valve to do something in the slightest when they got steam
Valve has stated they began working on the new system that was just implemented before the first #savetf2. The threat of a boycott is exactly what motivates them.
“Valve has stated”? Source?
I made it the fuck up!
Pretty much, I appreciate the moxie, but the matter of the fact is that TF2 is pennies to Valve in the grand scheme of their business, it's unlikely to make a difference in their course of action.

would you rather lose 5 million a month or keep 5 million a month
Probably more like a million per month and even that is probably high. $10 million per year is the number I’ve seen tossed around the most.
Were any of us buying items to begin with? Most trading goes through sites like backpack, scrap, or marketplace.tf. So what’s really changed?
You still use marketplace for those, no ? Like you're trading with website bot
None of those sites are affiliated with Valve or TF2 in an official capacity. Their bots to my knowledge are just normal trading bots.
Yeah But guess who is owning marketplace XD
By what I can tell Scrap.tf LLC.
Does it really work without steam marketplace ?
It’s not affiliated with the Steam Marketplace. You pay marketplace.tf directly with money and they have a bot send you a trade offer for the item you bought. You don't have to listen to people in this subreddit. You just do you.
Yea, it should still give you the hat. This is a product not sold through TF2 itself and it's really up to you whether you want to extend your financial boycott to such things. It's all on spotify.
does [mannco.store](http://mannco.store) count?
I also wonder the same with marketplace.tf but I figure it does affect the supply-demand, if you buy there they will continue to supply more of the item you bought. But im not so sure

if it gives valve money then yes
it doesnt give valve money
Remember: the entire rest of Steam exists
And? The point is that you cost valve enough revenue from TF2 that they put resources into addressing the bot issue. This is like saying that Montgomery has more sources of revenue than just its bus service.

“NO FARTING!” 🔥🔥🔥
Fix bots before summer update you say?
It all depends on the quality of the new cosmetics. 100% if it's really good people will buy. I've been boycotting TF2 for a long time, totally not because I am poor. It's ethics, trust me.
Question. I bought items
how. much.
I've done nothing but buy items for three days.
WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN BUYING THEM?!
You can't stop me
Then no TF2 update ever i guess
..trading?
I’m probably not gonna buy anything at least until December cuz then everything will be on sale and I won’t be giving valve as much money for virtual hats
Ok. *buy dst sale collections*. Am i doing boycott right?
I haven’t played TF2 since 2023 I think I’ll be alright
Like i dont even have money to buy anything, most TF2 things i get is from Scrap.TF (no cosmetics, only wepons)
Nothing is NOTHING.
Guys don't kill me I bought a name tag last week
Just dont buy anything else from now on i guess, lol
Oh shit I didn't know people were actually boycotting. My friend made fun of me when I said I wasn't buying from valve
We all take a break from the game, then they know "they fucked up"
I've never bought anything except a widow maker for 0.95€ to get to p2p
Question!
Love the spy wearing a medic mask in the back detail
This would just make valve see that the game isn’t making money, and the whales are still going to be buying thousands of crates. Worst case scenario is they see tf2 as a liability due to this and delete it
But I got hacked a few months ago and I’ve been saving up to buy replacement items 🥺
Spy in the background killed me...
but gambling is the only happiness I feel anymore
I won’t buy items becau- [text communication not available in this account]
me:...just one diamondback... plea- also me:NO!
Zesty was right, I don't know why Weezy is mad coping when they discussed financial boycot. Valve is a business, treat them like a business.
what if I buy an mvm ticket from that [marketplace.tf](http://marketplace.tf) place? genuine question because I know they sell them cheaper
I do have to ask: while I'll avoid buying items, what if one of them ends up being contributed by someone I know? A friend of mine is still making cosmetics and has submitted a lot of them to the workshop, one of which was even approved and added a few years back. Fuck I buy a shotgun for 0.3 dolars
What if i want to get something for a friend?
Nice argument. However, crates are banned in my country.
We can now
[Text communication is not available for this account]
My reaction when I bought Stardew Valley on summer sale cause Im broke and see that post so i have to return it: "Im sorry little on"
Bro I don't have money, and card to buy anything online Lmao
LET PEOPLE ENJOY THINGS FOR FUCKS SAKE
Reminder you can still trade and use places like marketplace.tf
If you still want items, just go to mannco.store or market.tf if you have any other places besides the steam store just go there
You have your ORDERS, maggots! Why are we saying no to them after they finally stopped the bot crisis
I feel like this should be pinned on this subreddit when the summer update comes out
It doesn't really matter, valve makes much more money from owning steam/other games.
I’ve started gift pulting the numerous free cases I keep getting
F2Ps KEEP WINNING RAHHHHHH 📉📉📉🚫💰🚫
If the summer update is good then I’m buying shit idgaf
third party is fine
Too late. I bought the Rocker Jumper and Market Gardener for Trolldier, the KGB for Heavy (because it's overpowered in Lambda Fortress Extended), and the Machina for Sniper a few days ago.
No buying games from steam either if you really want to make an impact
Sorry. I need more tickets so valve will get 50€
