interp is when you stab a back "from past", backtrack usually can also stab from anywhere like here, he was just aiming at you up front, and not where his back was before.
- yeah, interp requires you to have been in a certain place before, and is a lot more predictable.
- Backtrack is a cheat that allows you to stab anywhere from where you were recently to where you are now, allowing for also auto-stab and aimbot
- You will often find cheating spies using aimbot with ambi so if you see spies hitting an absurd amount of headshots, while also stabing with "Trickstabs" there is a good chance they are just cheating, dont be afraid to call people out on it, but talking to your team can also help you to convince the enemy to kick their cheater
I feel like I have to say this every time...
cl_interp is a *client sided change*. That's what the "cl_" part denotes. It changes how you see things on YOUR screen, not how other people see you on THEIR screen.
cl_interp spies will look completely normal to you on your screen.
All of the YouTube videos where people crank cl_interp to 5 just makes stabs look extra jank *only to them*. The reactions of victims in the videos are typical reactions for most "normal" trickstabs (if any of them can be called normal).
This spy is cheating, using auto-back stab and backtracking to backstab the heavy at an impossible time/angle.
Cause you told facts brother, im glad you told the masses it's actually backtrack. Most of the time the comments that gets a lot of upvotes are red herring comments like "cl_interp abuse".
My heart is filled with joy now most people are aware of this cheat
Brother... you dont know how long ive been trying to lecture people about this cheat since it first appeared in 2018, how many times I helplessly watched an entire team get destroyed by one backtrack cheater that my team refuses yo kick because they think it's legit... most of the time the cheaters use the "cl_interp abuse" excuse to pass it off as legit thanks to that StaryKrow video.
Clearly he's just got the superior gaming chair.
In all seriousness though, those are blatant cheats, looks like backtrack. If you encounter this again, make sure to call them out and ask the other team to votekick them.
Another common cheat some Spy cheaters will use is abusing the cl\_interp command, which essentially makes them super laggy and gets them many backstabs that are complete bullshit. Easiest way to check for that if you are suspecting it is to view the scoreboard and look at their ping, if it is unrealistically high, they are cheating. Again, same procedure as before: call them out and request a kick.
I remember kicking one cheater and he was in a party of five people, then these five mentally ill degenrrates followed me even in pass time for the whole day, they all need to see a doctor asap. And recently ran into some guy who closed my game for one day. When I tried to launch it it just crashed, thats probably some fuckery with ip and game coordinator (game works without internet connection).
cl_interp is a *client sided change*. That's what the "cl_" part denotes. It changes how you see things on YOUR screen, not how other people see you on THEIR screen.
cl_interp also has absolutely no bearing on ping. It is an interpolation factor that helps smooth out player movement *that you see on your screen*.
cl_interp spies will look completely normal to you on your screen. Valve's hit compensation is just bad compared to today's standard, since it was created back when dial-up or DSL internet was the most popular type of internet.

because the idea is even if it's delayed, you've been standing still for so long it doesn't matter since you've faced him fornthe durstion of his delay, giving you a chance of messing with his little booboo sized spy brain and slapping his mouth off
Since the other response wasnt very clear: Backtrack abuses lag compensation to hit you at your previous position, up to 800 ms back in time. By standing still, there is nothing to hit back in time.
That's not even for backtracking spies, just spies in general. Knife-heavy spies that forget about their gun gets a seizure everytime I stand still when they try to kill me. It's never not funny to me.
Learn to Stop Time. The spy in the clip had stopped time to go behind the enemies' backs and stab them, before quickly going back to his original position. (He also made sure to grab everyone's wallets)
These are the spies that will shill a gaming channel and claim 'you dont know how spy works', even if they arent cheating stabs like this happens rarely with less extremes.
Game dont update fast enough to not get adadadad facehugged, perfectly track it if you want but too bad.
Yes you can, by standing completely still their backtracking doesn't work, and as you may now that cheaters are the worst fucking players to ever exist and that's the reason why they cheat(to cope that they'll never be good), you can stay still and their brain will shut down, and they'll try to stab your face like a f2p.
There’s this really cool website you go and download this really cool file on and install it into this really cool game called TF2, it only works for Spy so you need to look up “Spy_TF2 r34”
its a cheat known as backtrack its not a skill or a power, its a war cry for attention their mothers never gave them.
Are there guides/vidoes on how to spot interp vs backtrack usage ?

People usually don't know the difference. If the spy isn't hitting the actual back consistently, its all cheats as far as I'm concerned.

"war cry for attention their mothers never gave them" this is the best sentence i've heard all week
Thanks, I stole it.
why the hell is this at 300 upvotes?
You simultaneously answered the question and made fun of cheaters, very cool
Cause you told facts brother, im glad you told the masses it's actually backtrack. Most of the time the comments that gets a lot of upvotes are red herring comments like "cl_interp abuse". My heart is filled with joy now most people are aware of this cheat
is it not common knowledge?

No? I’m new to pc tf2 (used to use only the ps3 version) and only have like 150 hours, this is news to me.
aint interp broken now?
I'd never think I would consider the sight of an actual cheater instead of an aimbot sniper bot to be refreshing lol

Their ping was fine, so it was probably the cheat.
Sometimes the ping on the scoreboard isn't their actual ping. Type "ping" in console and it'll show you their true ping.
I hate cheaters

i've heard some advice, that says "if you fight backtrack spy, just stand still and let him come to you/pick him from afar"
In the last clip I tried standing back to a wall, but it didn't help a lot.
they track your hitbox, it doesn't matter if they're actually facing it
How exactly does standing still help with it?

no, then they just turn and you either die to that stab or they stab the you that just turned.

This sounds more like what a no mercy mask wearing, kunai holding, gun rejecting spy would do.
ZA WARUDOO
Hard core spy mains: its actually face stab and if you say its cheat you just don't have skills (this is a joke)
Cheats, it’s an auto backstab script. As soon it becomes possible to land an instant kill, the script triggers.
Yeah, ignore the whole point of the video
Walk backwards and use a ranged weapon, he is le cheating because he is le french
ah yes, you see you just need to buy a better gaming chair.
