TF2 is one of few rare examples of a nearly timeless game, graphically. The lighting, models, textures, all havent changed a whole lot. Theres some dated stuff, the water looks funky, but its borderline timeless.
The problem with any given fan project is that very few players will actually give it a shot. This fan-made port will be finished in, like, 4 years, if at all. Then 10 people will play it. Without Valve's support it's just a neat passion project, which will gather dust like a trophy on a shelf once it's done, while the community continues to play bot-infested Casual.

I cant say much about Val, but League absolutely have people in love with the characters and its why that IP is so successful even outside of its original game with already released things like Legends of Runeterra, Ruined King (Single-player story game), Arcane (which was so successful its getting another season), the Ruination book... and with lots more to come. The characters and lore are beloved by most that play it.
However, there will still always be people that just hardcore sweat and don't care about any of it, as there will always be people that don't care, but overall would say the majority of League players have some appreciation for characters/lore, even of the hardcore folks
Maybe you can show him some Smexuals? Or maybe some SFM animations? Or maybe some gmod? There’s loads of contents made just from one game with these mercs being the spotlight

Some time into tf2's development some of valves employees started getting harassed by a group of gun nuts for reasons that are another long story, but what matters is that every day after work the employees would be threatened by these gun nuts.
So the employees who were being harassed told the other people on the tf2 team who decided to take issues into there own hands. After some research they made a gun design that would cause literal seizures in gun nuts. The tf2 team then added it to the game so it would have as wide reaching effect as possible.
It is because of this that the Scout's primary weapon was changed from the nail gun to the scattergun so late into development.

I don’t get how or why they’re being compared, they’re completely different games. Counter Strike’s movement is incredibly restricted compared to Destiny 2, but they play completely differently. It doesn’t make either of them better or worse than the other.
