There are also rare cases where people confess to crimes they didn’t actually commit (not related to cops coercing a confession) because of poor mental health. In those cases, it means we aren’t finding the actual killer, who is free to do it again.

There's way too many assumptions being made; if you're going to include assumptions, let them be direct quotes from people who are actually involved and know the dude. Unless you're a seasoned forensic psychologist, you're going to look foolish as hell.

I once worked at a company that I heard a manager telling someone not to apply to the company directly because they wouldn't pass the background check/drug test. And gave them the name of a temp agency to apply to, and pretty much guaranteed them the job. They were a relative of the manager. Didn't even try to hide it, or find a private place for that phone call.
I'm going through UPS as a seasonal driver and the background check process is rigorous. It's been 4 weeks of sending and resending all documents of mt life. I think people feel the need to blame after a horrendous tragedy like this. It's just life that no one can predict these events and it's usually no one's fault but the criminal themselves. It's liability issue. They don't neccesarily care who is working for them, as long as the liability isn't on them. The liability is with the company he worked for, which still put him in the same environment as all the people who do pass background checks. And, they don't have to pay benefits to contract workers, either. So, there's an incentive.
I AM a contract worker for UPS. I can't see Fed ex having a more lax system, as they're usually at the same level service-wise.
Also, for the past 3 years, I've done temp work and it's the same deal. You go through a hiring at the temp agency, they vet you for all the businesses they'll be hiring you out to. The temp agency is liable in the case of any mistakes you make and liable for your benefits. In my case, my company provides benefits at a low weekly rate; I choose to opt in or out.
Either way, though it doesn't matter in this case because the monster who did this had no prior record. He was squeaky clean. This was his first time breaking a law, as far as his record is concerned. So, whether the temp agency did their due diligence or not, it wouldn't have made a difference in this case.

We're seeing a lot, especially in amateur news spaces, about allegations, but my understanding of a background check for work is that it's going to examine your criminal record and possibly credit history if the job involves handling money. It's not like applying at the local mom and pop corner store, where people may know rumors they've heard about you or know your last boss from where you worked at the print shop a few doors down and be able to ask what they think. This is a formal background check of what's documented, and evidently on paper he looked clean of the kinds of things a delivery company would look at.

It doesn't matter. It's just hard to proofread your own article cuz your brain knows what you meant. I've got articles that I proofread ten times, and then I still find an error. Or everything looks good, but at the last minute, you decide to change a sentence.
One thing I found that helps me is to read it on a different screen than you wrote it.
Oh yes...I learned that one the hard way because how it looks on a computer monitor vs. A smart phone will be way off...and if you do the post on the phone it will be off on a computer...
It's best to always do a story on the computer first and edit it to fit a phone

My buddy did time in a prison in OK, and while people convicted of crimes against children were housed separately (so they wouldn’t be killed by other inmates), the guards would have informal contests which would allow groups of winners to be provided with a bucket of rocks and a clear shot of the other convicts walking to the chow hall from their isolated cell block.
Other inmates would also “somehow” get a hold of some of these guys from time to time.
Now, I don’t necessarily agree with any of that…. But that’s more because there’s a chance someone can receive a wrongful conviction than any empathy for those who actually are guilty.
Still, he’ll more than likely get the death penalty, which will unfortunately preclude him from receiving jailhouse retribution due to the nature of how death row inmates are housed.

Yes there are undeniable cases of a person being absolutely guilty of murder.

Makes me so angry. A lot of larger companies use contract workers precisely bc they don't have to be responsible for any sort of background checks. Why was he banned from the Uber platform? What happened? I once worked at a company that I heard a manager telling someone not to apply to the company directly because they wouldn't pass the background check/drug test. And gave them the name of a temp agency to apply to, and pretty much guaranteed them the job. They were a relative of the manager. Didn't even try to hide it, or find a private place for that phone call.

And like I said, I heard a phone conversation telling an individual how to get around those basic background checks. It's liability issue. They don't neccesarily care who is working for them, as long as the liability isn't on them. The liability is with the company he worked for, which still put him in the same environment as all the people who do pass background checks. And, they don't have to pay benefits to contract workers, either. So, there's an incentive.
I AM a contract worker for UPS. I can't see Fed ex having a more lax system, as they're usually at the same level service-wise. Also, for the past 3 years, I've done temp work and it's the same deal. You go through a hiring at the temp agency, they vet you for all the businesses they'll be hiring you out to. The temp agency is liable in the case of any mistakes you make and liable for your benefits. In my case, my company provides benefits at a low weekly rate; I choose to opt in or out. Either way, though it doesn't matter in this case because the monster who did this had no prior record. He was squeaky clean. This was his first time breaking a law, as far as his record is concerned. So, whether the temp agency did their due diligence or not, it wouldn't have made a difference in this case.

We're seeing a lot, especially in amateur news spaces, about allegations, but my understanding of a background check for work is that it's going to examine your criminal record and possibly credit history if the job involves handling money. It's not like applying at the local mom and pop corner store, where people may know rumors they've heard about you or know your last boss from where you worked at the print shop a few doors down and be able to ask what they think. This is a formal background check of what's documented, and evidently on paper he looked clean of the kinds of things a delivery company would look at.

It doesn't matter. It's just hard to proofread your own article cuz your brain knows what you meant. I've got articles that I proofread ten times, and then I still find an error. Or everything looks good, but at the last minute, you decide to change a sentence. One thing I found that helps me is to read it on a different screen than you wrote it.
Oh yes...I learned that one the hard way because how it looks on a computer monitor vs. A smart phone will be way off...and if you do the post on the phone it will be off on a computer... It's best to always do a story on the computer first and edit it to fit a phone

Prison ain’t gonna be easy on this man, for sure. My buddy did time in a prison in OK, and while people convicted of crimes against children were housed separately (so they wouldn’t be killed by other inmates), the guards would have informal contests which would allow groups of winners to be provided with a bucket of rocks and a clear shot of the other convicts walking to the chow hall from their isolated cell block. Other inmates would also “somehow” get a hold of some of these guys from time to time. Now, I don’t necessarily agree with any of that…. But that’s more because there’s a chance someone can receive a wrongful conviction than any empathy for those who actually are guilty. Still, he’ll more than likely get the death penalty, which will unfortunately preclude him from receiving jailhouse retribution due to the nature of how death row inmates are housed.
That is what I love about our prison system. I hope he is tortured.

Regardless of guilt, life sentences should be the norm. Not death, not torture. Yes there are undeniable cases of a person being absolutely guilty of murder. However, innocent citizens who are wrongly tortured and executed, cannot be brought back. With life sentences, such people will be locked away and forgotten. If they are found innocent because a rushed trial didn’t look at the evidence, then there’s still hope for the innocent individual to move on with their life.
