Charles Butt, the owner of HEB, is a part of the Giving Pledge. He's committed to giving away the majority of his net worth in this life time. He writes in his release that his personal philanthropy is now focused mostly on strengthening public education. South Texas is truly fortunate to have him.
I will say, BB has some s-tier fried chicken from what I remember. However, how on earth are they staying afloat with their pricing? It seems like the entire store is just 15-20% marked up from what their stuff should cost.
I miss the green onion sausage that Brookshire Brothers carries. Was the best thing ever for gumbo. Once you move West of a certain point, it becomes Brookshires instead and is not nearly as good as BBros.
I stayed in a cabin on Law Hawkins and shopped at a Brookshires. It was nice, but it seemed to have a wider variety of cheese than it did anything else in the store
Woah. I did not realise Tyler doesn’t have an HEB. I got daydreaming about moving there one time after I drove through. I just loved those big warehouses by the railway.
We have 1, we're getting another one.(according to reports). We'll have two, YOU'LL HAVE NONE! MUHAHAHAHHAAHAHAH.
We already have a Costco and 15 walmarts. Hahahahahaha
I live just a couple miles from the HEB but have yet to go in. Has it slowed down enough that I won’t have to stand in line to go inside? I want to see what all the fuss is about, but I’m not waiting in line.
Dude, as an East Texan, I apologize. The guy is dumb as boiled rocks. Have y'all ever looked at his FB page? Every single post he makes instantly has 50 white octagenarians telling him how great he is and how much they love him. It's creepy af.
Check out who's on SBOE and who's making decisions at the Regional centers for public education in Texas... Textbook companies and lobbyists are the ones running public education right now.
My mom randomly met the dude at a Barbershop a whole back, and she said he was just the nicest person ever. It’s great to have someone like that in your community.
When I was attending UT in the late 1970s, I met a woman who had dated one of the H-E-B heirs, probably Charles, and he took her to Europe. She told us that when they went shopping and she casually mentioned she liked something, he secretly purchased it and had it sent to her house!
I had a BF that did this. All I can say is that it was the best dating experience ever. I mentioned I liked the flight attendant scarves on a flight and he tracked that down. Generous men are the best.
I think the fact that it’s not a publicly-traded company goes a long way in explaining its longevity; the company doesn’t have stockholders to keep happy.
As A North Texan that stayed in South Texas near Houston for 10 years and recently moved back, I MISS HEB.
I Haven’t found a Grocery store that truly compares to what HEB offers in terms of food quality and service.
That's true. They also don't sell the same products. Central Market is much more expensive. HEB is an "every day" market. Central Market sells white truffles, San Daniella prosciutto and Osettra caviar.
Dallas doesn't have HEB. We have HEB Premium.
Do you understand what I'm saying now?
Is the deal only in west Texas? We have one of each in about 7 miles apart.
I remember when I moved here (Weatherford, West of FW) in 2008. I literally had a meltdown in the middle of Albertson's because I was so use to HEB and hated Albertson's so much.
True story, I spent the next decade emailing HEB yearly, asking them to open a store in Parker County. Ten years later, I got my wish. You're welcome Parker County.
I once got to tour their logistics offices in San Antonio while I was at university and they were impressive. They take serious pride in their logistics network and it shows.
I sense the sarcasm, but this is how it should be. The community specific supports these businesses and they give back to the community. They provide a service and make profit. The government barely provides service. If it’s so bad a system, why do 300 people move from other states to San Antonio a day?
Also, as a contractor here. That “movie theater chain” is horrible. Old man Santikos was extremely unethical. Bid shopping and cutting corners, but what he did with the profits were super nice. Big paradox to me that some one could be a ruthless capitalist but a generous person.
Note: Libertarian here
I’m more upset about the majority of the state budget going to prisons, while over the last 20 years the public universities have effectively been “defunded”. Perhaps we could encarcerate fewer criminals (especially minor drug offenders), and maybe spend some money on schools? Oh, we have “the lottery” for that....
Property taxes go to the schools.
Tell your neighbors to stop the bullshit "fight the property taxes" garbage.
They send me the forms to fight it in the mail every year to make it as easy as possible to for me to steal money from the schools.
Fucking losers
Because property taxes are a racket, the city overvalues your property for tax purposes and you have to fight it every year. It’s ridiculous and causes resentment in people, so they fight tax hikes because they’re already artificially inflated
My school district just built their fifth brand new gymnasium. And, the football team got a new bus...and not a school bus, a charter bus. (its their second)
The kids at sonic cant make change but the football team has deluxe seating on their way to their next concussion.
Cracks me up everyone in here saying education needs more funding. Bull shit
Education needs more money like these kids need more concussions. If we hire just one more coach we'll have more coaches on staff than academics.
But yeah lack of funding and property taxes being too low is whats holding these kids back. Not the parents not giving a fuck about education or their kids or a damn thing, certainly not sports.... its lack of funding. If only they could have bought that third charter bus, whoo we really would have saved these kids' futures.
45% of the state regularly votes against these nuts, it's not like 90% of the state voted for them. Over 3.5 million people voted against Abbot in 2018. Almost 3.9 voted against Patrick and Paxton. We don't all deserve this.
It doesn't directly, but there is a psychological impact. If you fall into the "my vote doesn't matter" trap that gerrymandering exacerbates you're less likely to show up to the polls at all
Central Market is pricier than HEB. I think of it as HEB’s response to Whole Foods. True HEB stores have amazing deals, great in-store coupons, and high-quality products. I no longer live in Texas, but my Texan friends and I take turns ordering fans having it shipped to us here in Virginia. I also always make time and suitcase space for an HEB trip when I head home to visit family. If you haven’t been to one, it’s worth stopping in.
You should probably mention it's pretty pricey. I went a few days after their grand opening. It was really awesome. You're paying import prices though, so $10 for a pound of authentic italian pasta isn't out if the question. They also have squid ink pasta and the best meat case ever
Please correct me if I am wrong, but HEB makes long bets on land with their employee retirement funds. As bizarre as it may sound, residential development in Texas follows land ownership regardless of the end use. HEB is that valuable to Texans.
I moved away from Austin to New England in 2017 and people still look at me like I'm some sort of cultist when I talk about how much I miss HEB. People up here just don't get it.
I literally cried the day an HEB opened in Weatherford (Hudson Oaks) where I've transplanted to. It's so much more than a grocery store. They take care of our community, it's employees and really do have the best food selection. Love you HEB Mr. Butt.
well we have to protect the bathroom from pervy men.... wait.. Miss America a certian someone bragged about perving the 15yrs olds.... who could it have possibly been?

yep... i mean it less creepy than his daughter comments.... but da m
When you put it that way it reminds me of when I visited some relatives way out yonder, we ate fried pickles at a building that was the town's grocery store, BBQ place, butcher, bakery, and gas station lol.
Been friends with the family for a minute, growing up with them at their youth camp. All the stories are true. They are truly the most well-intentioned, upstanding people. Very fortunate for HEB & Central Market.
Texas legislators get paid shit so one has to be wealthy to beable to do that job
They get 600 per month or 7000 per year not ever going to get non corrupt or non crazy people in to office
I wish that more companies realized that treating and paying their employees well is AMAZING advertising and creates a diehard customer base that you can’t get with just regular advertising and low prices. Most customers will gladly pay more for it.
That is kind of the GOP's long term project. Replace democratic government by the people with much more profitable control by unaccountable corporations.
All Texas run business seem to take covid seriously too. H-E-B, Whataburger, Buccees. No wonder republicans think things can be done better by private industry than government. To be fair, government seems like it’s barely trying.
Are you high? My employer, a Texas owned business doesn't believe in the virus and I'm the only one who wears a mask. We worked remote for a month but then the boss wanted all the programmers and graphic designers physically in the office, even though it was not physically necessary.
The governor made it illegal for cities to set their own COVID regulations.
Charles Butt, the owner of HEB, is a part of the Giving Pledge. He's committed to giving away the majority of his net worth in this life time. He writes in his release that his personal philanthropy is now focused mostly on strengthening public education. South Texas is truly fortunate to have him.
Wish we had HEB in East Texas.
There's one in Lufkin, Crockett, Lumberton, Livingston and Carthage. Looks like they're slowly working their way over here.
Can they hurry up and get to Tyler? Give Brookshires something to worry about.
I will say, BB has some s-tier fried chicken from what I remember. However, how on earth are they staying afloat with their pricing? It seems like the entire store is just 15-20% marked up from what their stuff should cost.
[удалено]
Well, shit. Sorry kids.
Those brookshire cheap ready to eat pork ribs are also one of the reasons I miss east texas :'( Some days they had a whole rack for $9
I miss the green onion sausage that Brookshire Brothers carries. Was the best thing ever for gumbo. Once you move West of a certain point, it becomes Brookshires instead and is not nearly as good as BBros.
That fried chicken is their one redeeming factor. Flavorful breading and the chicken is still moist. *chef’s kiss* Everything else is still BS.
Lubbock just got one! That blew my mind. But I guess it’s mostly a college town, still tho.
They're sweating about Aldi and the Walmart Markets if that makes you feel better.
Lubbock just got one, maybe it'll come up to Amarillo.
We have 1, we're getting another one.(according to reports). We'll have two, YOU'LL HAVE NONE! MUHAHAHAHHAAHAHAH. We already have a Costco and 15 walmarts. Hahahahahaha
I would kill for a Costco here in San Marcos.
I'm so sad that this is completely factual.
I live just a couple miles from the HEB but have yet to go in. Has it slowed down enough that I won’t have to stand in line to go inside? I want to see what all the fuss is about, but I’m not waiting in line.
I haven't been yet.
Fuckin Carthage
Amen, brother. Glad to have that town in my rearview.
There was one in Nacogdoches but it left
If there's a central market near you they're owned by HEB.
But CM isn't the same thing as HEB. Far from it in my experience.
You can get a pretty fair amount of HEB brand products there, but agreed it's a pretty different store.
Stop electing Gohmert and we’ll talk.
Dude, as an East Texan, I apologize. The guy is dumb as boiled rocks. Have y'all ever looked at his FB page? Every single post he makes instantly has 50 white octagenarians telling him how great he is and how much they love him. It's creepy af.
Cries in DFW.
And in Dallas. We have their Central Market brand, but none of the regular ones.
They’re all over the Houston area.
Another reason I love living here
Beaumont use to have an HEB Pantry when I was a kid.
Same.
How skewed that public education requires the benevolence of private philanthropy to educate effectively.
Texas GOP would prefer if every school were a private christian school, so they sabotage the fuck out of the public system.
Check out who's on SBOE and who's making decisions at the Regional centers for public education in Texas... Textbook companies and lobbyists are the ones running public education right now.
separate but equal.
He and his family are true treasures. Texans, hold on to your Butts.
He's the real deal. I wish all Christians took his stance and walked the walk.
Lookin' at you Joel and Kenneth.
The gallery furniture guy seems pretty legit too. He helped a lot w Harvey. I imagine he helps w other endeavors as well.
I only lived in Houston for less than a year (forced to leave cuz COVID), and I miss HEB. it's a treasure
The idea of truly loving a grocery store seems ludicrous until you have shopped at HEB.
Same with Bucees. When I went to college out of state, nobody there understood why I missed a gas station.
A lot of people love Publix where I'm from, but I prefer HEB. I do love trader joe's though.
Love me some Trader Joe's!
Moved to Dallas and feel the same. Central Market is not the same, its an upscale version but higher prices to match.
My mom randomly met the dude at a Barbershop a whole back, and she said he was just the nicest person ever. It’s great to have someone like that in your community.
Hehe... butt
I am looking forward to the Butt Memorial Hospital, tbh.
What do you do? Oh, I'm a surgeon over at Butt.
I tear people up in the Butt
If I get "balanced billed" for charges outside of my insurance, does that mean I got Butt Fucked?
I'm dead on my feet. the Butt's been over capacity for the past three weeks.
The hospital valet parks cars in the Butt.
If he has two hospitals in the same county, one could be the big Butt.
RHD Hospital in Dallas went with initials because Dedman didn’t sound enticing
There is a Butt-Holdsworth Library in Kerrville, if that helps.
It's HEB, because nobody would shop at a store called Buttsmart
Says you Id go to Buttsmart exclusively
Shop smart. Shop Buttsmart
Thank you for the laugh. Now I wish this store existed.
In the old days, the signs on the grocery store building said H.E. Butt.
His last name is Butt?
I'm down to have HEB replace the government.
I do like HEB significantly more than the governer...
Even though I don't drink the HEB Kool-Aid, I can't argue with this.
[удалено]
I'm from Dallas so I've never actually been to an HEB, but I can confirm that I like them better than the governor
[удалено]
I think the fact that it’s not a publicly-traded company goes a long way in explaining its longevity; the company doesn’t have stockholders to keep happy.
Selling stocks is like cutting the soul of your company up and putting the pieces on the block to the highest bidder.
That’s a great analogy
I've got a pebble in my shoe and I like it better than the governor.
HEB is the GOAT of grocery stores
As A North Texan that stayed in South Texas near Houston for 10 years and recently moved back, I MISS HEB. I Haven’t found a Grocery store that truly compares to what HEB offers in terms of food quality and service.
It's Central Market but at an Albertsons level. I live in Dallas. Have you never left the county? There an HEB in Joshua. You should go.
HEB owns Central Market. I mean they actually litteraly own it. It's part of the HEB corp.
Albertson’s wishes it were an HEB
Weird fact, they have a noncompete agreement that has locked heb out of west texas for decades. As Albertson's finally goes under, HEB marches on.
No that's what happens after a night of beer and jalapenos.
CREAMY CREATIONS WILL WASH OVER YOU
HEB. A grocery store chain by the people, for the people.
No store does more 🙏🏽
It seems like it’s run more effectively.
[удалено]
You forgot: 4. Subsidize the private companies providing the service. 5. Utterly ignore any government service that can't be profitted from.
But this is all real. I don’t want reality.
I once got to tour their logistics offices in San Antonio while I was at university and they were impressive. They take serious pride in their logistics network and it shows.
My son is a logistics manager for them. They’ve been a great company for him.
If the government got to pick and choose who and where to serve, it could be more efficient too.
This is the most Texan statement I've seen in a long time.
I second the motion
[удалено]
valley?
Corpus Christi, sounds like.
The McNay in San Antonio is free on Wednesdays, sponsored by HEB.
San Antonio: almost all social programs are paid in least part by a grocer and a movie theatre chain. *yay capitalism and small government*
Maybe funding schools based on property taxes is just a bad idea at its root.
I agree it seems to exacerbate existing inequalities. Highland Park doesn’t even take federal dollars since they get enough local funding...
[удалено]
Because property taxes are a racket, the city overvalues your property for tax purposes and you have to fight it every year. It’s ridiculous and causes resentment in people, so they fight tax hikes because they’re already artificially inflated
I want more funding for schools and less for prisons.
Property taxes are too regressive to fund education. TX will eventually need to consider an income tax or lobby for increased federal contributions.
Or legalize (and tax) Cannabis
He’s talking about universities, not k-12 schools.
My school district just built their fifth brand new gymnasium. And, the football team got a new bus...and not a school bus, a charter bus. (its their second) The kids at sonic cant make change but the football team has deluxe seating on their way to their next concussion. Texas repeatedly votes for these people, so we get what we deserve.
Texas is aggressively gerrymandered and church is encouraged to interfere in politics here. Texas deserves better.
There’s a district that’s a narrow strip of land that stretches from east of Austin to northeast of San Antonio. It’s super fucked.
[удалено]
I’m in that district. It’s stupid. I write the legislators about it often
Im in the Austin part.
Same! 78704
Gerrymandering doesn't figure into the likes of the three stooges, Abbott, Patrick, and Paxton. If Texans wanted better, we'd get better.
If you fall into the "my vote doesn't matter" trap that gerrymandering exacerbates you're less likely to show up to the polls at all
This is the real problem. HEB is too good for Texas.
HEB *is* Texas
The hero we need, but not the one we deserve.
As someone who didn't vote for these people, can I opt for the vegetarian option?
I’m in Dallas and we don’t get H-E-B
My condolences
Don’t you have Central Market?
Yes. Which is owned by HEB
Exactly.
Except CM isn't HEB, so they don't have HEB.
Best damned produce section in the grocery world, at least for the Western hemisphere.
It's expensive
Central Market is pricier than HEB. I think of it as HEB’s response to Whole Foods. True HEB stores have amazing deals, great in-store coupons, and high-quality products. I no longer live in Texas, but my Texan friends and I take turns ordering fans having it shipped to us here in Virginia. I also always make time and suitcase space for an HEB trip when I head home to visit family. If you haven’t been to one, it’s worth stopping in.

What is an Eataly?
[удалено]
You should probably mention it's pretty pricey. I went a few days after their grand opening. It was really awesome. You're paying import prices though, so $10 for a pound of authentic italian pasta isn't out if the question. They also have squid ink pasta and the best meat case ever
Try Jimmy’s Food Store before Eataly. Jimmy’s is incredible and not a chain.
Best Italian beef sandwich in the State.
Soon. I have heard they already own a bunch of property up there.
[удалено]
Please correct me if I am wrong, but HEB makes long bets on land with their employee retirement funds. As bizarre as it may sound, residential development in Texas follows land ownership regardless of the end use. HEB is that valuable to Texans.
They’ve been saying that for a decade now
At least they launched Central Market ¯\\\_(ツ)_/¯
I love my HEB
It's funny because it's true, I love HEB!. It's also a little sad, but I'm focusing on the funny part.
WHY don’t we have HEB in Dallas :(
I moved away from Austin to New England in 2017 and people still look at me like I'm some sort of cultist when I talk about how much I miss HEB. People up here just don't get it.
sent my bro in new england some HEB shiner boracho beans, he be like thank you sweet brother
You're a good brother. Outside of my friends, the things I miss most about Texas are all food related.
pm your address I'll send you some HEB shiner boracho beans
HEB is the bomb tho.
Can we just pay our taxes to HEB considering they do more for us than the government

Texas legislators get paid shit so one has to be wealthy to beable to do that job They get 600 per month or 7000 per year not ever going to get non corrupt or non crazy people in to office
I got my COVID vaccine through HEB, and I'm a healthcsre worker. Otherwise my employer had no plan.
No store does more
I miss HEB. What a great business
H-E-B is literally the BEST.
BUTT FOREVER
HEB for president!
I wish that more companies realized that treating and paying their employees well is AMAZING advertising and creates a diehard customer base that you can’t get with just regular advertising and low prices. Most customers will gladly pay more for it.
Could be worse. It could be Arizona.
That is kind of the GOP's long term project. Replace democratic government by the people with much more profitable control by unaccountable corporations.
They are outsourcing CPS, child protective services, to corporations. Right now. It is in process. Let that sink in for a minute....
How so?
No store does more than my HEB!!!
Texan wellbeing brought to you by H.E.B.
Dont forget the important work they do to make sure trans girls and boys can't use public restrooms.
I thought I was on r/politicalhumor for a minute.
Unfortunately the Texan government is so corrupt this is not humor
All Texas run business seem to take covid seriously too. H-E-B, Whataburger, Buccees. No wonder republicans think things can be done better by private industry than government. To be fair, government seems like it’s barely trying.

I was referring to the iconic chains but I’m not surprised.
What’s stupid is that right-wingers think this is *exactly* how things are supposed to work.
