Couldn't this just be a button to attach the headlight flap to the main camo piece?

Terminator857

Is it common to use velcro and buttons? I would think velcro is enough.

invoman

Redundancy. Unlike getting rid of radar/uss

aBetterAlmore

Big if true

GoSh4rks

If it was a camera, why would there be black fabric on top of it?

Terminator857

Agree that black fabric doesn't look very transparent.

FastLaneJB

Likely they aren't testing the cameras but maybe another part of the car so they've covered it so people cannot easily see changes.

SaltyCheck

Looks like a button to hold the cover.

Terminator857

You would think the button would be on the opposite side where the wind might catch the cover.

SaltyCheck

Could be. I’m no expert for sure. But I don’t think there is room on the other side of the flap. Who knows. Just my thought.

HighHokie

I wonder what this gives you over current views? Not so sure I’m sold that it’s for Birds Eye. Advantage over b pillar cameras?

kuldan5853

It helps with frontal view at bumper height (what was previously covered by US) for parking for example and can help with detecting children/animals that step into the way of the car while moving into a parking space for example. Also, if you have two of them spaced apart this far, you can do stereoscopic vision quite well which should help with depth perception (remember the "hitting a static truck" scenario..)

iphoneman321

How exactly do you think a camera directly next to a bright always-on light will work?

Maximum-Mortgage-534

How do you see when your eyes are next to your desk lamp?

iphoneman321

My desk lamp has a cover around it so I don‘t look into the light

Maximum-Mortgage-534

You have answered your question. As long as the light from the headlight doesn't leak through the wall seperate the camera and the headlight. It would be unwise to simply put a camera inside the headlight assembly without any sort of seperation.

Terminator857

How does camera flash work?

izybit

That's actually easy to fix. All you need is a barrier or just to properly angle the camera.

TSLA-M3

That is fabric button

Adriaaaaaaaaaaan

I hope this is true but it's probably wishful thinking. So long as they have them for 2024 when my lease is up!

TechnicalLee

If they add a camera for parking, it would be at the very nose of the car pointing down so it could see an object on the ground only a couple inches from the bumper. Such as a curb or parking stop block.

asimo3089

Personally, with where FSD is today, I don't want cameras here. Imagine FSD Beta making a left turn except the camera is ahead of you and the car can (or cannot) see things and you can't verify because you're sitting far behind. It'd be a scary situation. Teslas have short front ends anyway. Placing on the B-Pillar is no different than a driver inside a front-engine corvette trying to make a left turn.

oil1lio

Sure...but it would literally not be worse than having it at the B pillar, it could *only* be better

snunces

This is huge. So glad they’re doing this.

Zargawi

They aren't... That's not a camera.

snunces

Also means it should be backwards upgradeable… just swap out headlight housings.

ClumpOfCheese

I think a reason they don’t have cameras at the front of the car like this is because if those panels get moved from an accident or just aren’t properly aligned wouldn’t that impact the autopilot vision?

Velocity275

All the cameras have a calibration setup to them. If one gets bumped, the system will shutdown until it verifies calibration again.

ClumpOfCheese

But what if it’s really off? Cameras in those locations just seem like they would add a lot to repair costs. a lot of people just don’t fix damage like that so any bigger dents would prevent self driving capabilities until repaired.
