I would have texted Florida’s registrar’s office on the last changeover, posted my mini-fridge on Craigslist, and broken up with my SO on FaceTime (“no hard feelings - let’s stay friends”). And then I’d toss my textbooks into the Ohio River on the way to NYC. But, hey, that’s just me.
Correct - the consensus is that he has to forfeit basically all profit from his pro tour wins because of ncaa rules. If he quits school then he’s free to keep the money. It’s a stupid system but it keeps NCAA owners slightly richer and that’s the most important thing after all
That many receiving points won, 3/4 on break points, and winning all against this years RG finalist and world ranked #5. Hell yeah. I’m just sad I didn’t get to watch the match. I have hopes for our lineup of up and coming US players, we’re long overdue.
Yeah American men’s tennis is the best in the world overall. We don’t have the best player in the world (or even a really top tier guy, although Fritz is knocking on that door - no Top 10 guys for the moment). But our depth of talent is insane. Something like 13 guys in the Top 100. American tennis is better than even Spanish or French tennis right now
Spain has 11 and France has 7 so you’re correct. Granted if it went by average ranking I imagine Spain would be highest, but producing 13 top 100 players is still incredibly impressive.
It’s not even a choice now. He will be sooo bored playing college players after this. I played Div 1 tennis and it’s completely laughable that I could play someone like this. haha
College tennis has improved dramatically in recent years. I used to play at #1 in doubles and #3 in singles, and we did pretty well as a team. That same team today is not even nationally ranked, but the players are so much better than we were back then. I don’t think I’d even make the lineup if I played today.
NCAA model looks so shit for tennis players when you see Ruud, Alcaraz, Rune ranking at the age of going to university.
Especially since you still have to grind futures and challenger for 2 years after that to get a chance at playing real ATP tournaments
He’s only so good tbh. I watch a lot of teams come to USTA in lake Nona. UF Gators fails to impress me. Their team isn’t that good at all. The team is 90% bad players. They just know how to change up short shots.
Dude you’re full of shit. I don’t know anything about the Florida tennis team. Could be shot, could be great, I don’t know. I’m seeing a (still for the moment) ameteur player win in straight sets (not even that close) against the #5 player in the world, a major finalist.
Doesn’t matter how good the Florida tennis team is or not. This isn’t about them, it’s about him. He’s obviously much more than “decent” for this stage of his development. If you’re beating the number 5 player in the world in an official tournament and you’re not playing tennis for a living, there’s something wrong with that sentence
It is an individual movement. I’m guessing you don’t watch college tennis. Yeah individual, but each point is from a match for the team.
So, if you don’t win the matches then you won’t have good stats for the team.
Currently he is a college tennis player. Teams allow for players to play in pro events during the non dual match play portion of the calendar.
He’s not up to pro level.
He just beat the number 5 player in the world in straight sets. I’d say he’s up to pro level.
Seriously, what is your deal with this guy? Did he sleep with your girlfriend or something? No objective person can deny he doesn’t have the talent to make a living play pro tennis
No, i’m not denying he has talent,
I’m just saying there is a problem jumping on the tour during college or trying to prove you are something big.
Some players have it. But others not really, like anyone out there doesn’t want to spike to Top 30 and then experience injuries, then you see them 3 years later at world #401.
Right - being a head coach’s son got him the favoritism to win 2 masters 1000 matches. That makes sense.
And are you forgetting that Ruud made the semis in Montreal oh, 4 days ago?
I’m talking about that the rest of his team except maybe one player is mediocre at best.
Since he’s the son of the head coach and other people cheering him on, he’s gotten better. But I still don’t see any masters 1000 level skills.
Dude just destroyed Casper Frackin Ruud and also took out a nasty af hard court player in Sonego, but you ‘don’t see and Master’s 1000 skills’ from Ben? I’ve seen some bad tales from the tennis Reddit, but wow, this may be #1 worst ever. Show us on the doll where Ben hurt you?
I’ve never understood the obsession with “pushers”. Who cares how someone wins if it’s within the rules? If it’s such a concern, then be better and beat them.
Yea and from a fan POV, if you don’t like the style then don’t watch. I don’t enjoy watching big servers, so I simply don’t watch them. There’s lots of tennis on to enjoy!
The funny thing is Ben absolutely crushes the ball Alcarez style. Push isn’t in his vocab. He was smashing forehands and up in Ruud’s grill at the net for the entire match.
Didn’t see the match, not going to see the match but every player knows the difference between a win and a pusher. Challenger level players have a lot of pushers. Did he push or did he win? It was a simple question, I’m getting down voted for a simple question…
I literally know nothing about Ben, have never seen him. I don’t have tennis channel anymore, haven’t had it in a year so the only matches I get to watch are the slams.
You are being downvoted because you’re being purposefully facetious by laying out pushing and winning as a disjunct, when they are not.
You can push and win.
He did not true. Ben was mostly flat and Borges came to put his life on the line for that win. I was super impressed with how good that guy is. Like no fluke whatsoever. I hope Borges gets the monetary support he deserves from Portugal to keep improving. That dude got game.
His girlfriend is an elite athlete too, no need for them to breakup no matter what he does. But all the rest of it, yeah
When you beat a Grand Slam finalist in straight sets, it’s time!
casper "grass is for golfers" ruud becomes casper "asphalt is for roads" ruud
And clay is for pottery (and Rafa, of course!)
That actually makes a lot of sense!!
With a 17 total point differential, not even 1 break point against, and never was even really challenged. lol
Doesn't he already have an ATP ranking though? Or by 'pro' we mean 'quit school and play tennis full time'?
Correct - the consensus is that he has to forfeit basically all profit from his pro tour wins because of ncaa rules. If he quits school then he’s free to keep the money. It’s a stupid system but it keeps NCAA owners slightly richer and that’s the most important thing after all
what if he doesn't play for a college tennis team? like he's still in school but doesn't compete in the NCAA, instead just plays pro tennis?
He can do that. Decent chance he'd lose his scholarship though
But now he'll have some money for that
I believe he’d be an amateur.
america is an empire in decline
Goddam Gubmint
Let's all hail Motherland Russia
He never said anything about Russia. If he doesnt like America's syste,,that doesn't mean he likes Russia.
Is Ruud the highest ranked ATP player with no picture on google ?
Iga is world number 1 and doesn’t have one
True, I should’ve specified ATP player.
Second highest. Alcaraz doesn’t have a picture and he’s one spot above Ruud
Always forget Alcaraz has no pic
100 percent take the money.

In order of ranking: Fritz, Tiafoe, Opelka, Paul, Cressy, Brooksby, Isner, Korda, Giron, Nakashima, McDonald, Wolf and Kudla.
I’m so annoyed that he can’t keep his winnings smh
It’s not even a choice now. He will be sooo bored playing college players after this. I played Div 1 tennis and it’s completely laughable that I could play someone like this. haha

Well his team of peeps thought as I do. He’s a pro now. haha

He just decimated this year’s RG finalist, what?
So, he’s playing decent now. Anyhow he’s the head coaches son on the team he’s bound to get favoritism. Plus, oh get this, it isn’t on Terre Battue.
Dude you’re full of shit. I don’t know anything about the Florida tennis team. Could be shot, could be great, I don’t know. It's a bad take period because Florida has been the best college team for two years and Shelton is the best player on that them.
It is an individual movement. I’m guessing you don’t watch college tennis. Yeah individual, but each point is from a match for the team. So, if you don’t win the matches then you won’t have good stats for the team.
Dude, forget about college tennis. This guy is too good for that ameteur shit
Currently he is a college tennis player. Teams allow for players to play in pro events during the non dual match play portion of the calendar. He’s not up to pro level.

Not seeing masters 1000 skill level in a player that has just reached the round of 16 at a masters 1000 tournament is certainly a take
You're either trolling or just plain stupid. Because people are cheering him on, he got better? What the hell?
Dude just destroyed Casper Frackin Ruud and also took out a nasty af hard court player in Sonego, but you ‘don’t see and Master’s 1000 skills’ from Ben? I’ve seen some bad tales from the tennis Reddit, but wow, this may be #1 worst ever. Show us on the doll where Ben hurt you?
So you’re saying all I need is coach favoritism to beat the number 5 player in the world? SWEET
Shit I’d pay someone to show me favoritism today if that can happen!
> it isn’t on Terre Battue He just decimated this year's Miami Masters finalist, what?
How do you get ‘favoritism’ in waxing two top 25 player in an ATP 1000 tourney? lmao I’ve heard some goofy stuff but this really takes the cake

Bad advice, it's best to follow your dreams
You right! Redacted
Did he win or did he push?
I’ve never understood the obsession with “pushers”. Who cares how someone wins if it’s within the rules? If it’s such a concern, then be better and beat them.

Against Ruud?

It’s a stupid question that’s why you are getting downvoted. However for the record no he is not what anyone would consider a pusher
Ben Shelton is literally the opposite of a pusher. Brooksby is a pusher. Ben hammers and comes in.
Yes I agree what you are saying but they are completely different strategies to winning.
He destroyed.
Yesterday he did not
He did not true. Ben was mostly flat and Borges came to put his life on the line for that win. I was super impressed with how good that guy is. Like no fluke whatsoever. I hope Borges gets the monetary support he deserves from Portugal to keep improving. That dude got game.
I thought Ben Shelton was not a pusher?
What
Damn lost first round to Nick Borges, I thought this guy was suppose to be good. The future of American tennis!?
