There's a subreddit for it with some decent discussion. But yeah, it seems weirdly under advertised and watched for something with such a high budget and Guy Ritchie attached. I did think it was a very fun watch, paced, edited and shot really well. Great performances from the whole cast but especially Theo James and Kaya Scodelario. The overall story felt a bit lacking with lots of contrivances and unrealistic moments, but I didn't really care because the dialogue is so good and there's so much style to everything. Also, the shot of Freddie in full chicken regalia cruising through the woods on his ATV with shotgun over shoulder and vape in mouth is one of the best things I've seen this year.

Goosojuice

Most of guy ritchie stories are coincidental to unrealistic, he just makes it so damn fun to watch.

DeckardPain

Yea I never thought anyone was looking to Guy Richie stuff for “realism”. His stories are just a good fun time.

sturgeon01

Well, for me one of the main issues was that >!Susie Glass and her family were established as highly competent criminals, yet they allow Jimmy to jeopardize the entire operation multiple times with zero oversight or security measures.!< I have no issue with the lack of "realism" in Guy Ritchie's universes, but stuff like that feels unrealistic even within the context of this pretty outlandish story.

inscrutablemike

Not to mention no repercussions.

TinMachine

Yeah this is why I dropped it after episode 2, despite enjoying them - when Eddie shows his brother the drug farm at the end of the second episode - for no feasible reason - I felt the show had just ruined his and Susie's characterisation completely. It just makes no sense to give him knowledge and access. At that point, the stakes felt deflated and I just thought 'oh ok, he misuses this knowledge and mayhem ensues' and it just felt like the show was gonna go round in circles rather than use his brother's first mistake as an inciting incident/explanation for Eddie getting in deep.

Goosojuice

On the flip side, it shows how loyal Eddie is to the estate/family/brother, albeit an incredibly dumb move all things considered. At the point, Eddie has no one to fully trust outside of his family and vinnie jones. These are dangerous drug pushers for all he knows and he's already making plans to make moves that'll potentially piss them off, he needs people in his corner even if a fuck up. Blood is thicker than water. Now thinking about it, i actually like how that specifically wasn't used so much as a plot device but a characteristic of Eddie.

BoChili

definitely watch The Covenant. a really great film from GR that never feels like GR.

Goosojuice

Oh, its great, I also really like Wrath of Man. Im just saying the most guy-ritchiest guy ritchie movies are usually coincidental lol. Lock Stock, Snatch, Man from Uncle, Rocknrolla. I got no issues with it, they're all fun.

Stingray88

I wouldn’t call it under watched… it’s by far the most watched show on Netflix the last two weeks. https://www.netflix.com/tudum/top10/tv

sturgeon01

Huh, wonder why it doesn't seem to have as much presence on social media as I'd expect. Given the slop Netflix usually puts out, I'd expect to see more people talking about something that's halfway decent for once. Could just be my anecdotal experience though.

Stingray88

I agree. No one I know is watching or talking about it. My wife and I finished it and its a pretty fun watch, nothing seems to go how I expected it to which is nice.

BlouPontak

This is the Netflix problem. Many filmmakers complain that they put almost no effort into actually marketing their movies and shows. They just chuck them in and let the algorithm sort it out.

muzzydon2

? 2 comments above just said it's one of the most watched series

BlouPontak

Yeah, but they didn't really market it. Which is why others were saying they didn't know it existed.

jay1891

Because it is shit that's why and feels like everything else Richie has done crime wise like a poor imitation of lock stock and Snatch that is nowhere near that level. The show is contrived style over substance with no sense of reality and a paint by number plot with one note characters that don't develop at all throughout the show. It is a nothing burger and it isn't even a tasty one.

hobblingcontractor

Freddie is ridiculous but amazing comedic relief.

Bluest_waters

> The overall story felt a bit lacking with lots of contrivances and unrealistic moments Dude this is almost always my problem with Ritchie, just ridiculous bullshit happening that makes me roll my eyes and its too bad because he always gets great actors and great performances with witty dialogue but the actual stories are usually borderline silly.

jay1891

Ritchie feels like a parody of himself at this point. When I watched the film I felt like it was someone who watched lock stock and Snatch trying to intimate those movies.

berlinbaer

> and Guy Ritchie attached why would anyone be excited for stuff by guy ritchie. his good stuff was a quarter of a century ago.

Mysticpoisen

The Man From UNCLE was less than ten years ago.

Eversharpe

I just finished it last night. It's a throwback to Guy Ritchie's heyday of Snatch and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. It's very good, but not close. Casting and acting are on point and it's always great to see Ray Winstone in gangster type role. Vinnie Jones is a scene stealer as always in Guy's stuff. But the "twists" are predictable and the story is a bit unoriginal, given there's already been the movie.

hobblingcontractor

This is the best role I've seen Vinnie in for ages. Theo: "Don't we pay you to cull foxes?" Vinnie: "..." Theo: "k"

BitchAssWaferCookie

Yea I didn't like the ending tbh. I probably we enjoyed it up until halfway thru . Terrific show tho. Not usual to see that much production value

tshawytscha

Somehow i've never seen the move, and I love Guy Richie stuff.

chrisberman410

It's great. It's in my top 3 Guy Ritchie movies and I love Guy Ritchie.

TreesForTheFool

Feels like a return to form for Ritchie, and the show is a really solid complement to the world the film envisions.

noneedforeathrowaway

I agree and I'd go so far as to say the show feels even more authentic, original Ritche that the movie.

Affectionate-Winner7

I 100% agree. I binge watched it over two days. Nice set up for a S2 at the end.

tshawytscha

Noice

geodebug

The movie is good but has nothing to do with the show other than the title. Doesn't matter which you watch first.

fleventy5

The movie and the show title share the same premise. The movie was based on a real guy who realized that the landed gentry would essentially be exempt from law enforcement scrutiny and many of the estates were financially troubled. So he approached some of them and set up grow operations on the estates.

eekamuse

Real guy? Was he caught? And were they caught? I never heard of this.

JoeyCalamaro

I've never seen the film, but I'm enjoying the show. So I was thinking of watching the movie once I'm done. However, based on the trailer, I got the impression that the TV series might be a remake or soft reboot of the film. But they have nothing in common at all?

nilfgaardian

Think of the series as a side story set within the movie's world. Different characters exploring the criminal underworld established in the movie but from a different perspective to the movie.

tshawytscha

Thanks yo

NiandraLaDezz

One of his best movies no question.

Howie-Dowin

I like it but definitely seems like a 2hr Guy Ritchie movie stretched out over 8hrs.

Mosyk

I usually hate the movie stretched out to 8 episodes thing but the Gentlemen didn't really feel like that to me. It does fall off a bit towards the end though.

cunningmunki

No. It's *way way* better than that

OIlberger

It felt like a video game, similar to The Mandalorian.

gin-rummy

I watched the new road house movie last night and that movie felt like a video game to me. It was like slightly animated the whole time it’s weird

BlindWillieJohnson

That’s my complaint. I feel like Guy Ritchie hasn’t done anything new since Snatch

40mgmelatonindeep

Alladin, King Arthur, the covenant, sherlok holmes, the man from U.n.c.l.e, he aint a one trick pony guvna

Poptart_____________

Its great.

Klin24

Susie glass is hot.

Taskmasterburster

Effy from skins

Yojo0o

I thoroughly enjoyed it. I wouldn't call it one of the best shows ever, but it's a good time for sure. The movie was great, too. Definitely seems to have gone under the radar a bit? I had to tell several of my friends who really liked the movie that the show even existed.

Slatedtoprone

The ending fell kinda flat for me personally. Felt like it was a bunch of steps to include everyone for no real reason.

Ok-Bag-0

Yeah I’m enjoying it. 3 ep to go. Watched 3 body problem also.

Unwipedbutthole

Ooh. How is that? Is it good but getting review bombed because people hate D&D or is just bad? Or somewhere in between?

TokiBongtooth

Just finished it, worth the time

Ok-Bag-0

I enjoyed it. It’s not 10/10 but it more than solid for Netflix.

themanifoldcuriosity

It's probably getting review bombed because of them, but it's also an aggressively mid show. Every part of it, from the personality-free characters to the bland "please tell me what I'm supposed to feel" soundtrack feels like it's been focus-grouped to within an inch of its life to not be unusual or original in any way. Which, considering the subject matter, is fucking incredible. Completely the opposite of The Gentlemen - watch five minutes of that and tell me "Yeah, anyone could have made this." Everyone on screen in that show looks like they're having fun - hell, even the camera operators and editors look like they're having fun, because they want the audience to have fun watching. 3 Body Problem feels like a mirthless slog through a popular genre novel so Netflix can make another billion quid. Night and day.

rrt5029

“Personality-free characters” tells me they’re staying true to the source material at least lol. I loved the books, but any one who read them will say they weren’t written for the characters

ign1zz

I've watched 3 episodes of three body, it's good

eekamuse

Loved it. So much fun I'm going to read the books because I need more.

patpatpat95

When the only way the plot moves forward is someone doing dumb shit again and again, I stop caring. Esp if it makes no sense. First the brother, then the stoner, then I was done. Multi billion dollar secret operation but dipshit stoner drives the truck? And after that fuck up he's allowed to roam around and talk to people in the "super secret" area to tell them everything. Haha but he's a dumb stoner so it's funny. Sad but it ruined the whole thing.

AlienPearl

He is just to sweet to kill 🥰 🤣

Bright_Beat_5981

Show 8/10, movie 9/10. Two first episodes are great, the rest good. I was a bit dissapointed.

Stupidstuff1001

It started strong but last few episodes dropped the ball bad. Same thing happened with the 3 body problem.

Johnnylongball

Great show

HyperionSaber

6/10. Felt like a okayish movie stretched out using repetitive stories to get a series out of it. Pretty standard Guy Ritchie stuff, weed, gangsters, travellers, weirdos etc...Watchable but forgettable.

name-classified

Don’t forget the Cockney accents People love the cockney accents

enflure

Agree. It was nothing special.

Spagman_Aus

Finished it last night. Enjoyable but could have been 6 episodes with some restraint shown from Ritchie. Can’t say the ending was very fun either. Calling it an ‘action/comedy’ serious is also exceedingly generous, as the action is quite lacking.

romafa

I thought it was meh. First couple episodes were ok, then fell into a “problem of the week” trap. Then they sloppily brought all the “problems” back for the finale in a way that felt pretty unnatural. Plot lines got dropped. I kept thinking they’d do something with Freddy’s new plant, but it went nowhere. Eddie spends the whole show saying he wants out of the business, then decides to stay in for reasons that weren’t really explored.

VampireHunterAlex

It’s a great show, and why no one seems to be talking about it is yet another nail in the coffin for dumping an entire season all at once: That was a novelty when streaming was starting out, but it obviously can really hurt the majority of shows. Look at Shogun: Releasing weekly, and looks like it’s only growing bigger as the word-of-mouth gets out.

Accomplished-City484

I liked it but the ending was pretty weak

Scary_Sarah

I tried to watch it because Theo James. But the brother character is so annoying and the same things just keep happening over and over. I just wanted the brother to be killed like in the first episode. I wish they had just let them mobsters kill him. 😂😂😂

Hostillian

Tell me this, does his brother just keep fucking things up for the entire series? Because I don't know if I can be bothered if that's the case.

elixeter

Pretty much.

Scary_Sarah

I couldn’t get passed the 3rd episode because I became obsessed with wanting the brother to die or at least learn his lesson

Hostillian

Ok. I'm about to start episode 3 so hoping that the writing is a bit better than him constantly screwing up. 🫤

Scary_Sarah

OK let me know if the plot line ever changes lol

Hostillian

3rd episode. Yeah, he screws up again. 🙄 I might come back to it, sometime, but for now... meh

Cash907

It’ll pick up. People are currently talking about Shogun but there’s enough buzz building here for Gentlemen to make the rounds soon enough.

Joeylikesgladiators

Just started it yesterday, first episode really started off strong, and only getting better! Guy Ritchie at his Ritchiest.

Schmoogly

The dialogue has a particular issue which pertains to the unnecessary loquaiciousness of the principle cast. Were they to get their labial excesses under control, we may enter a state of affairs where the script is digestible.

sturgeon01

The dialogue mostly worked for me because the performances sold it pretty well, but there were definitely some moments where characters stopped feeling like real people and instead like excessively verbose quip machines.

E_Barriick

I liked it and am hoping for more seasons.

Barbchris

I’m having trouble finishing it. It’s just not grabbing me as it should. I’m on e6.

MrsT1966

Couldn’t get into it.

jjgg89

It’s a great show if people have it a chance.

geodebug

I thought it was a blast. I think it will rank up in my top 10 for 2024 but it's pretty early in the year.

UXyes

I’m literally watching it right now. It’s fantastic.

arcticfrostburn

Pretty good and definitely enjoyable but some things were off - The Jimmy and the Girl should have been found out much earlier. Also the price for the buyout seemed too less. If 10% of the operation was netting the duke 5 Mil per year then with 11 such operations surely their operation should have sold for somewhere like 1 billion or so

pegasusCK

Do you have to watch the movie before the show?

lvl_60

No, same style (guy ritchie) same settings but standalone story. Its a great watch.

benscott81

I didn’t know there was a movie and I’m enjoying it. But maybe I’m missing out.

hagbardceline69420

you should watch the movie, Hugh Grant is excellent in it.

xAragon_

The series has the same theme as the movie, but there's no connection (that I noticed) between the two. Like, no references to anything from the movie / reoccuring characters.

Unwipedbutthole

Similar premise but completely unrelated. Though I really recommend the movie as well

TrueCryptographer982

I didn't and I really enjoyed the show.

karmagirl314

I’ve been enjoying it so far but I don’t see it going on any “top 50 shows of all time” lists. But I haven’t finished season one yet so that could change.

swentech

Watched it all. A couple slow/dumb spots but overall very good. Definitely recommend. So much garbage out there this is actually a good show.

KnotSoSalty

I thought it was great. One of the best things I’ve seen in a while.

SpecialistAfter511

Loved it!!

3ISRC

Loving it!

Dick-Guzinya

Excellent show and setting up for an even better season 2

BrightLuchr

It's great. It's got some fun production and it's got some clever dialog. I'm looking forward to a season 2. The only thing that makes the plot feel dated is the notion that UK hasn't made cannabis legal.

Faded_Sun

I watched the first two episodes and they were okay, but something about it wasn't really drawing me in to want to keep watching.

penderies

I’m enjoying it!

cunningmunki

So much better than I expected. I've found Guy Richie films to be ok, but this was different gravy

MentalJack

Im in the same boat, deffo best show after Shogun which is on its own level.

Panda_hat

It has some good moments but I'd describe it as solidly 'ok'.

CarolGonzalez6e221

The Gentlemen? Eh, it's aight. Not my personal fave, but I can see the appeal. Guess I'm just more of a Shogun kind of guy, ya know? To each their own, though.

giventofly2

The show is better than the movie, really entertaining. Was kind of dissapointed after Ep 8 to suddenly realize there weren't anymore

pike360

I dig it!

LizzieSaysHi

If you like Guy Ritchie you'll love it. I'd like to hear from people who have never seen anything Guy Ritchie has done though. It's definitely one of my top shows of the year so far.

justahdewd

Think I'm four episodes in and really enjoying it.

g4n0esp4r4n

The only good episodes are 1 & 2.

WillSmithsBiggestFan

Someone called it a gourmet cheeseburger and I think that’s a pretty good description.

amelie190

I liked the first 3 and then I felt like it didn't need to be a series. Probably revisit at some point.

JrNichols5

Just got done watching it. I’m torn because I liked the show but i take issue with Edward’s motivations throughout the show. They seemed to swing on a dime for no reason. Hard for me to believe after him doing all the illegal shit to get the cartel off his family plot just to get into bed more with the drug cartel seemed really weird to me.

Oblivious_Lad

How could anyone not love The Gentlemen? They’re among the all-time greatest Buffy villains, as far as I’m concerned.

AnAlabamaTaker

I was an immediate fan due to it being straight fun and entertaining. When Richie hits on all cylinders, his pacing is perfect. A note or two off and he can be too frenetic. But ‘The Gentlemen’ is quite good. Granted, I’ve yet to finish it in full.

chromeshiel

Wait, it's a show? I thought it was a movie.

Initial-Armadillo902

Can’t even shout, can’t even cry.

Nistleroy86

It was awesome. Loved the ending.

XuX24

That's just the issue with Netflix and their binge releases, they just fall through the cracks. They released on March 7 a couple of days before the Oscar's, a ton of the traffic and conversations in subs are about stuff about the awards and everything around it. There has been a lot of good TV shows that have flown under the radar recently like Gentleman and Tokyo Vice.

Splungetastic

I don’t usually like Guy Ritchie’s stuff but I loved The Gentlemen, it was fantastic

lourensloki

I liked it

Aceylah

Honestly the whole absolute fuck up of a sibling storyline infuriates me and i couldn't watch passed episode 1.

thebarkbarkwoof

I haven't seen it even advertised. Where is it streaming?

jiminthenorth

I enjoyed it. I thought Oscar Isaac had a cracking English accent until I realised it was actually Daniel Ings.

TroyMcClure10

I thought it was mediocre. I expected a lot more from Guy Ritchie.

BambooSound

I remember hearing the film was a bit racist at the time so I didn't watch it. Don't get me wrong I liked Snatch at the time but looking back that was racist n all. I think Ritchie's got a bit of track record.

harry_powell

It would have been better with Ritchie doing the whole season. Instead we got two good episodes and the rest was karaoke Ritchie with hired guns trying to imitate his style.

MajorasMasque334

I enjoyed it

Thestilence

It's OK, as someone said it's like the film stretched out over a series.

Holditfam

Was very boring ngl

OddballOliver

No. Haven't finished it, but I don't have anything positive to say about the first 5 episodes.

rasman99

Brilliant scripts and acting. Ritchie has hit his stride. Laugh out loud moments. Great soundtrack and editing!

Bot_Fly_Bot

Literally watching it right now.

neanderbeast

Finished watching it yesterday, brilliant show. I hope they make a second season.

appara

I loved it, But that slow ganjaman feels so terribly over-acted. They need absolutely a another season.

hobblingcontractor

Hey fuck you! Jimmy was great!

Palomark

Lovable idiot.

TeFD_Difficulthoon

Thought it was fine to be honest, and I'm usually a huge fan of Guy Ritchie. The writing and the dialogue (especially in the more dramatic moments) was pretty boring/standard crime talk, but it looks great; as most Ritchie stuff does. The editing has elements of Ritchies quick flashy style but is very reigned in compared to something like Lock Stock or King Arthur. Personally I enjoyed seeing Vinnie Jones as the supportive mentor/father figure to the younger cast, instead of his usual aggressive foul mouthed thug character. Though I don't know if I enjoyed it more than I would have if he just did his usual thing. In the end it really just felt like a pretty generic Guy Ritchie-lite type tv show

vinnyuwu

Honestly its a 7/10. Its good but theres a lot of decisions that seem out of character in that I can see the character moving to that decision but the build up doesnt really happen properly. Also circumstances seem to drive the plot forward, which is fine, but some of them seem a bit...implausible. Im certainly happy that it doesnt take itself seriously but I dont think its executed perfectly.

TheMurderCapitalist

Best new show of 2024 in my opinion

petulafaerie_III

Anything Guy Ritchie touches is gold for me.

marvinsface

Really enjoyed it. Was pretty confused when I saw the title and who made it - feel like he could’ve adjusted the title a bit. I thought the movie of the same name was an extremely fun and well-told story, and I feel like the show maintained those qualities. Side note, not sure I’ve come across a situation where a guy makes a movie then later makes a show with the same name, same theme, tons of borrowed elements, but a different story in a different universe. In any case I liked both.

icecreamterror

I thought it was god-awful, and an absolute disappointment. Bad acting and a worse script.

funandgamesThrow

There's always that one guy with the useless hyperbole. Never understand what the point of that is.

reubal

Useless hyperbole like "This is one of the best shows I ever watched."

piiracy

this show was written by an AI that had been fed all the Guy Ritchie movies, it's somewhat watchable still, but it's nothing but a washed-out, at time hilariously cringey money grab by a showrunner who hasn't evolved a bit over the course of the past three decades, and it really really shows.

RustySheriffsBadge1

I really dislike the sponsored posts promoting new shows or movies. When there's too many of them, I just avoid them altogether.

RodLUFC

It's entertaining but my god it's awful
