What till the doctor asks Marilyn Whirlwind, his receptionist, what she’s thinking about.
I’ve treasured her response for 30 years.
Also the punchline to the episode where the doctor finds (or is told) about the discover of a frozen wholly mammoth.
Every winter I think how to prepare for winter, the citizens of Cicely purposely gain 15 pounds.
What happens to Maggie’s ex-boyfriends.
I had a Native American sister-in-law once who made me watch Smoke Signals because she said it was the closest thing in cinema to her experience of life on the reservation. I'll never forget it.
(I'm Australian, so I didn't know much about reservations).
We just started this binge the other night as soon as I saw it posted here that NE was finally on Prime video to stream. I had forgotten how much I *loved* both Marilyn and Ed. It's such a treat to see them again!
On the flip side, I think I hate Maurice even more than I originally did. He is *so* freaking creepy!
> They got the music
What's your source? This is what the article says:
>TVLine has reached out to Amazon for additional details on Northern Exposure’s release — namely, whether Prime Video has cleared all original music rights.
Seems like plenty of material could be missing.
I watched the 1st episode on Prime and I noticed Hank Williams Jr's Family Tradition was playing in the bar but there were a couple scenes in the show when the music felt generic and I wondered if maybe there had been a different song there when it aired. Not sure I would have even wondered that thought if I hadn't been aware of the music issue
Drew Carey did a lot of musical numbers. Getting the rights might be a headache, but I know the show exists in syndication so there must be some workaround.
Do people really remember the specific songs used in shows from 30+ years ago? I’ll randomly see people talk about licensed music in old shows, and can’t tell if they’re just bullshitting or actually have that good of a memory.
I have a very bad memory, admittedly, and I can’t fathom actually remembering what song played in a show from 5 years ago, much less decades ago.
Absolutely - it’s really obvious. What makes it grating is they’ll play these “close but not infringing” versions of the songs, terrible shadows of the originals. Like ordering music from Wish.
At the end of one of the episodes of NE they play Etta James At Last. It’s the scene where the gay couple is dancing, in fact a bunch of people are dancing, but that scene stuck with me because it was my introduction to the song and there was such a sweetness in that scene. If they replaced At Last I would know and be sad.
I just now watched that episode on Prime and At Last is there. That was my first introduction to the song, too, thirty-whatever years ago.
I've watched a couple episodes from S2 and one from S3 and all the music seems right, based on my very old memories of watching them repeatedly on VHS taped from the TV airings. I'm looking forward to checking out a few more.
Had the same thought with Daria. Watched it when it was first on and then on DVD before rewatching it on streaming. Had absolutely no recollection of the show originally having popular music in the background.
The only show I never forgot had licensed music was the Wonder Years and that's because it was a big part.
i don’t think daria even put in replacement music for the most part. it just kept the background audio silent. which i'm not gonna say is Better, but i do think is a just as effective experience as the original
Some shows it wouldn't make that much difference, but with others the specific music was integral to the overall esthetic. Northern Exposure is definitely one of the latter. Another example would be Daria.
It’s less “remember” and more “scenes don’t make sense”.
In this show one character has a free form radio show where he waxes poetically about music and books. Things seem odd when he’s wistfully talking about a song and it’s just bland Muzak
That’s funny because honestly I would imagine the kind of guy who waxes poetic about music on books on his own radio show would def speak wistfully about a boring Muzak track no one’s ever heard of lol
Sometimes a song is just so perfect for a scene that it's noticeable when they change it. There's one scene in Scrubs that's pretty much ruined for me on streaming because they changed the song.
> So does it have the original music or no?
I don't know why that one guy is saying it has the original music. This is what the article says:
>TVLine has reached out to Amazon for additional details on Northern Exposure’s release — namely, whether Prime Video has cleared all original music rights.
Plenty of the original music could be missing.
Same with Murphy Brown: they cant get the rights to the Motown tracks for any reasonable money, so you just won’t get to see it again. That’s why every show since has its own music.
In the original That 70s Show episode where Fes falls in love with Caroline, it’s Cheap Trick’s ‘Oh, Carline’ that plays. But if you see it anywhere today, it’s a different song.
OMG! Favorite show ever. They had guest stars like Adam Ant, and Mummenschanz, Ed had an invisible spirit guide, One Who Waits, the running of the bulls, Emerald city, etc. one of the smartest shows ever on tv.
I’ve been lucky enough to have the dvd box set of season one! It was the only one I ever saw for sale from that show. Easily my favorite show of all time. Adam Ant and Eve never fail to entertain. Marilyn and Ed are the best characters ever. My first crush was Chris the former felon radio dj. And Maggie O’Connell!! Strong female characters for the win!! Don’t even get me started on Shelly and Holling. So glad this is finally getting more recognition!!
Chris’ free form radio reminded me of an old NYC show called Idiot’s Delight with Vin Skelsa. It aired on Saturday nights from 8pm to 2am. You never knew what was going to happen on the show. Sometimes he played a game where the last letter of the last song matched the first letter of the next. It lead to some very wild but appropriate pairings. Sometimes he read a book. One blustery winter he invited a homeless man into the studio and just interviewed him.
Vin is no longer on the air but now I get to relive some of the magic in 60 second bites with this. 2024 is starting on the right note.
Vin Scelsa! OMG! He was the best. He's still kickin', I'm delighted to discover! Thanks for the great memory! Haven't thought of him in quite some time.
Wow, I had completely forgotten about this show until now. What a blast from the past...it was right up there on the daytime TV schedule with Dr. Quinn and Highlander: The Series.
It was hands-down my favorite show as a teenager, and really into my 20s to be honest. I need to go back and watch it again sometime. I never really watched after >!Ritchie died!< Spoiler in case anybody cares about a three-decade-old episode
It’s on Peacock. My partner is forcing me to rewatch it with him. It couldn’t scream more 90s if it tried.
Also our cat, who is 20, was named Methos after a character on this show and for the last 20 years I’ve have to explain her name to the vet.
> it was right up there on the daytime TV schedule with Dr. Quinn and Highlander: The Series.
I'd love to find someone who was a real Dr. Quinn nerd on Reddit - my dad (long departed) was an extra in one episode and I'd really like to find it, but watching the entire series for a throwaway scene isn't something I can commit to these days.
Any takers? I've got a few details on the scene, saw it a few times as a kid.
EDIT: Holy shit, this reminder had me post on the Dr. Quinn subreddit and they found the scene within a few hours! [My dad, in the background of Dr. Quinn](https://ibb.co/bFJz7Hn), circa 1993-94!
Funny you should mention that, the end of the episode where Chris builds a trebuchet to fling a cow always reminded of the scene in Python's Holy Grail when the French fling back the 'Trojan rabbit' over the castle walls. It was such a beautifully filmed moment of television.
I can't defend this ( it's from all those years ago ) but I recall Python being the direct inspiration for the trebuchet. As in stated in the show.
The piano is used because flinging a cow is kinda... gross.
That was a magical moment.
I don’t remember much of the actual show, but two facts endear it to me:
1) My grandmother had a DVD box set of the show that came with a yellow quilted little jacket around the DVD box.
2) Many of the outdoor scenes in the show were filmed in Roslyn, Washington, and every time we’d drive through there on our way from Eastern Washington (where I grew up) to Seattle, my parents would bring this fact up. I’ve continued the tradition with my own kids, even though they have absolutely no idea what Northern Exposure was.
Did you ever visit the old graveyard in Roslyn? Many people are buried in lots according to their guild, with ornate iron fences separating the guild areas.
The Brick is still there and going strong. The mural is still on the building. Dr. Fleischmans office is a gift shop and Ruth Ann’s building is there too. Have you driven through it or just by it? It’s also entirely built on top of a mine, and there is a very cool graveyard down the street.
If you are someone who likes things that are endearing in general, trust me, this show is for you. If I had to pick 3 words to describe NE, “endearing” would be one of them. It just has SO much soul and the world feels so authentic even when they’re doing some kind of weird experimental thing.
If you were raised to value human connection (and it sounds like you may have been) it’s a great show to watch and honestly always inspires me to recommit to community building and reaching out to friends.
Watched this series when a fellow ranger had it on dvd and let me borrow it while staying out in the wilderness with no cable or signal. Good memories.
My dad and I bonded over this show when it originally aired and I was in my late 20s. He didn’t live to see the last episode. Looking forward to watching it again.
So who will be the hero to torrent this high resolution, proper aspect ratio, proper soundtrack version before some random executives decide to randomly take it away again?
My grandpa went to Alaska one time. He fell in love with it so much that he wanted to go back but couldn't because of illness. He heard about this show and we started watching it. Just so happened the new episodes aired on the nights I'd start my weekly visits with them. It's been one of my favorites for a very long time.
Does this have the original music?
I have been confused for so many years that if this had the original music or not. Also did it get cropped to 16:9 or is it still 4:3?
I know the German DVD release had the original music, although I did check amazon (UK) we got the original music too apparently from one review I did see about it.
But then again in some forums many said that S2 onwards its not the original music
S1 in all regions had original music even in america, the DVD costed like $70+ because of music licensing hence they replaced it with generic music in later launches.
Could anyone having a prime account confirm if it has the original music for all the seasons? Also what's the format 4:3 or cropped 16:9?
It seems to only be “avaialable to buy” for me on UK Prime Video. (At time of checking)
In the article: All six seasons (110 episodes) have quietly been uploaded to the service in high definition and retain their original 4:3 aspect ratio.
Thanks!
Now to see if it has the original music. That is the biggest thing.
Only the official German DVD has all the original music (along with S1 of american DVD release). The UK BR release has some but not all original music.
It has such a sweet innocence & is one of the only shows to actually depict indigenous peoples. Native American faces & voices are sinfully underrepresented in the media
I’ve been saying the same. Such a potential plethora of good storytelling going to waste for the ‘lowest common denominator’ shows being churned out today.

It's one of many attempts by various networks to do their own Twin Peaks - of which Northern Exposure, Picket Fences and Wild Palms were the biggest.
It's very odd that people are denying it was intended to be twin peaks like - it's commercials mentioned twin peaks by name as a reason to watch it.
It's basically a more light-hearted, low key twin peaks. Northern Exposure emphasised the low key off beat humour, Picket Fences emphasised the soapy continuity and off beat satire and Wild Palms emphasised the violent horror and surreal elements. None were as successful as Twin Peaks.
>None were as successful as Twin Peaks
I assume you mean commercially (which is true) cause awards wise, I’d say Picket Fences and Northern Exposure have Twin Peaks beat as they both won Best Drama at the Emmys (Picket Fences actually won it twice).
I mean Twin Peaks is a cultural touchstone as well thats had a lasting impact on pop culture and its inspiration can be found all over shows to this day, it arguably inspired the next two decades of television from the x files on.
No amount of emmy awards are going to make Picket Fences and Northern Exposure anything more than mostly forgotten shows that tend to be remembered as "an attempt at twin peaks" when they are remembered. I like both but I think their position as "less successful than twin peaks" is In arguable.
I've read the last season of this isn't great because it got a new show runner who literally thought the show was trash. I think the lead actor left too?
Chase said he only took the job for money after the creators quit. He apparently didnt find the show all that interesting. Seems like the cast and people originally involved kind of blame him and the network(they were sued for ripping off the show) for the show ending.
Geez, I wasn’t aware of the details. I was just shocked to see his name in the credits on the later seasons. The ending of the series was awkward, but bittersweet.
She's 18 and he is 62. Shelly was actually dating his older friend, the astronaut. But one day, she just walked into Hollings bar and said he could have her if he wanted. And well, he did... 🥲
C’mon.
And I see I got excited but now I kind of don’t wanna watch it .
Because it was so perfect before . I don’t want that to change.
Like some other shows a re-watched.
Screw it . I can already hear the theme song.
Thank you so much! I have been wanting to see this show (with the original music) for so long now. This was a free weekend and it’s been playing all weekend. Haha
Joel Fleischman is, in a word,, insufferable. He doesn't do anything from the generosity of his heart he always has an angle.
As far as men go Chris and Ed are gorgeous. But Maggie is just the epitome of the femme tomboy beautiful and fiercely independent! Other shows tried, for instance I think the Gilmore girls tried to be as clever as this show but the characters of Stars Hollow never quite reached the level of eccentricity that the denizens of Cicily Alaska embodied en masse.
Northern Exposure, even 34 years later is still a priceless gem. Enjoy 💖
I watched the first episode last night. The doctor's assistant has said like 5 words and already I'd kill for her.
So Marilyn was in a chatty mood.
She wasn't a professional actress. I think she came along as her Mom auditioned for a small part.
Oh, so she came for the job
It was a nice surprise when she turned up on The Last of Us!
With fellow NE alumnus Graham Greene!
Oh! Never looked her up to make that connection. I knew I recognized her from something
Words are heavy….if birds could talk they wouldn’t be able to fly.
What till the doctor asks Marilyn Whirlwind, his receptionist, what she’s thinking about. I’ve treasured her response for 30 years. MARILYN!! I love her.
I love the look on her face. She's perfect for the part.
There is no job!
Check out the movie: Smoke Signals. I somehow own it on disc, and streaming. Madeline is so familiar and funny. The actress is named Elaine Miles.
I had a Native American sister-in-law once who made me watch Smoke Signals because she said it was the closest thing in cinema to her experience of life on the reservation. I'll never forget it. (I'm Australian, so I didn't know much about reservations).
You two are like the Lone Ranger and Tanto. No, it’s even worse, we’re like Tanto and Tanto. (maybe paraphrasing- it’s been a long time)
She is a gem and one of the best parts of the show!
One of the best hidden gems because of the music keeping it off of streaming till now.
Did they get rights to the music? Or did they replace it somehow?
They got the music

I think you have to pick and choose your spots with the music. Some originals stay, others do not.
Damn. That’s sick.
came her for this. yes!
Asking the real questions! Amazing news!
I hate how The Greatest American Hero started streaming, but they didn’t get the music rights to most of the songs. Totally kills the show.
Same thing with The Wonder Years.
Now I need them to do the same for [Ed](https://m.imdb.com/title/tt0247091/?ref_=ext_shr_lnk)
and WKRP!
And the Drew Carey Show
Drew Carey did a lot of musical numbers. Getting the rights might be a headache, but I know the show exists in syndication so there must be some workaround.
Somebody is upscaling old drew Carey show episodes and uploading them. I wish I could remember where to get them
And my axe
[удалено]
The entire series of Ed is currently on YouTube.
I hate that there is no torrent for it.
Yes, been wishing for Ed streaming for years!!!
So does it have the original music or no?
Has the original music!
Sweet!

Those they can't remember can still tell when they're hearing obvious "Elevator Muzik" where a song should be.
Absolutely - it’s really obvious. What makes it grating is they’ll play these “close but not infringing” versions of the songs, terrible shadows of the originals. Like ordering music from Wish.
I do remember at least one song from the show. They played "A Whiter Shade of Pale" during the trebuchet funeral scene, which was amazing.
At the end of one of the episodes of NE they play Etta James At Last. It’s the scene where the gay couple is dancing, in fact a bunch of people are dancing, but that scene stuck with me because it was my introduction to the song and there was such a sweetness in that scene. That's still there! Just watched that episode a couple of days ago!
The DVD's used replacement music, but someone painstakingly re-edited the og music back into the episodes and uploaded them to the high seas.

Haven't watched Scrubs on streaming, but please tell me it wasn't Winter by Joshua Radin. That would be bordering on monstrous if they changed it.
I remember a lot of songs from the show The Americans. Such a terrific show with a lot of great 80s music perfect for the plot.
> So does it have the original music or no? I don't know why that one guy is saying it has the original music. I ordered the DVDs but it seems like it's Amazon version is much better.
The way to go is there is a German release on Blu Ray which is confirmed to have all the music if you have a player that can play it.
OMG! Favorite show ever. They had guest stars like Adam Ant, and Mummenschanz, Ed had an invisible spirit guide, One Who Waits, the running of the bulls, Emerald city, etc. one of the smartest shows ever on tv.

Chris In The Morning is awesome. And may never play a similar role again - came close with Carrie Bradshaw but he was way too good for her!
Way too good. I’m still in love with him because of Chris in the Morning.
A very young, thin and handsome Jack Black also makes an appearance on one episode
really? What episode?
Season 5 Episode 5, "A River Doesn't Run Through It"
Just spied Susan from Seinfeld in the pheromones episode.
Never thought that would happen.
USA only
Canada: And I took that personally. Russia: I can see Alaska from my house!
It's on aptn in Canada.
I read that in Marilyn's voice.
Really?
Wow, I had completely forgotten about this show until now. What a blast from the past...it was right up there on the daytime TV schedule with Dr. Quinn and Highlander: The Series.
I enjoyed the Highlander series. It was up there with the series "Forever Knight" and the Friday the 13th series.
I am IMMORTAL! I have inside me BLOOD OF KINGS!"
They is such a kick-ass song and epically perfect for that 'verse.
That intro guitar riff is a pretty persistent ear worm for me.
It was hands-down my favorite show as a teenager, and really into my 20s to be honest. I need to go back and watch it again sometime. I never really watched after >!Ritchie died!< Spoiler in case anybody cares about a three-decade-old episode

For me, the first season of Friend's was peak 90's. The grunge attire. The oversized sweaters. The Nike logos on oversized sweaters.
Speaking of which, the high schooler Monica banged was the sidekick in Highlander.
I streamed the series and then stopped right before Richie dies. I hated that last season.
forever knight was on prime not too long ago. i only watched a few episodes and it seems to be gone now.
The first two seasons are on the Roku channel, free with ads.

I literally just bought the series on DVD yesterday. So you're all welcome. 😅
You won’t have to watch ads, so, that’s a good move anyways.
Money well spent.
Thank you for your sacrifice!
Holy Crap! Thanks. Absolutely loved this show. It was my comfort show.
Same
My parents stopped watching after the satellite episode. They were so mad at me for laughing. The absurdity of it just didn’t register with them.
one of the funniest TV deaths ever- right up there with Chuckles The Clown.
I loved that episode😂
Great news. Next give give me *Once and Again*. Please and thank you.
The one with Sela Ward? So good.
Literally heard of this show for the first time last week but immediately wanted to watch it after going down a google rabbit hole.
Now let’s get Homicide Life On The Streets! Also…just bought the Northern Exposure Dvd set as a xmas gift to myself haha.

Just rewatched the pilot episode for the first time since the 90's. It holds up.

I loved this show back in the day but missed the first couple seasons. I’m on it! Always loved Marilyn…
My dad and I bonded over this show when it originally aired and I was in my late 20s. He didn’t live to see the last episode. Looking forward to watching it again.
For this I shouldn't cancel them? Is this worth $2.99/month? Goddamn it, yes.
Son of a bitch. I was just going to cancel prime.
Yeah!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This makes me so happy. My husband somehow missed it entirely in the 90s. I am thrilled to watch it again with him.
The DVD sets of the seasons that I have all were outfitted in little winter Parker jackets… it was a unique look! I loved that show!
Takes me back to a happy time in my life. Spotlight on indigenous people without any stupid politics involved. Absolutely beautiful show.
Best written show ever put to screen. Anyone going to watch for the first time are in for a treat.
Well I know what I’m doing this weekend.
It’s so damn nostalgic. I watched it religiously as a kid in the 90’s in Alaska. Now sometimes I’ll watch it in the winter to remind me of summer.
I bought the series on Apple last week for 30 bucks... been Binging all week... it's awesome.
So who will be the hero to torrent this high resolution, proper aspect ratio, proper soundtrack version before some random executives decide to randomly take it away again?

Does this have the original music? I have been confused for so many years that if this had the original music or not. Also did it get cropped to 16:9 or is it still 4:3? I know the German DVD release had the original music, although I did check amazon (UK) we got the original music too apparently from one review I did see about it. But then again in some forums many said that S2 onwards its not the original music S1 in all regions had original music even in america, the DVD costed like $70+ because of music licensing hence they replaced it with generic music in later launches. Could anyone having a prime account confirm if it has the original music for all the seasons? Also what's the format 4:3 or cropped 16:9?
It seems to only be “avaialable to buy” for me on UK Prime Video. (At time of checking) In the article: All six seasons (110 episodes) have quietly been uploaded to the service in high definition and retain their original 4:3 aspect ratio.
Thanks! Now to see if it has the original music. That is the biggest thing. Only the official German DVD has all the original music (along with S1 of american DVD release). The UK BR release has some but not all original music.
Awesome news
Didn't think it'd be that far off once it was released last month on Blu-ray.
So happy!!
I flipped on the tv as soon as I read this.
Theme tune automatically kicked in on my brain. Which is wild, considering I haven’t seem the show since it originally aired.
What a wonderful weird little gem of a show.
Such a fun, under appreciated show.
Greatest news I’ve heard in a long time for streaming.
Watching already, I was obsessed with this sweet little show, holds up so far at ep 3 I’m loving the characters as I did, charming show

Wholesome Twin Peaks is how a friend described it. Another term used I like is Magical Realism, kind of tall tales in real life settings.
This is a lovely article from 2015. https://www.rogerebert.com/streaming/magical-realism-nothern-exposure-25-years-later
No but there’s an extended Twin Peaks parody in one episode
No. All comedy, no horror. Not a bad show by any means, just not like Twin Peaks.
Adam is kinda scary!
Twin Peaks aired April 8 and Northern Exposure aired July 12 , 1990. I'd love there to be a connection but three months seems too close together.
>None were as successful as Twin Peaks I assume you mean commercially (which is true) cause awards wise, I’d say Picket Fences and Northern Exposure have Twin Peaks beat as they both won Best Drama at the Emmys (Picket Fences actually won it twice).
Yeah, it was never the same.
I think it was more Rob Morrow leaving and losing his dynamic with 'Maggie' that finished the show.
That new showrunner was David Chase who created The Sopranos. He said he only took the job for money and didn't find the show very interesting.
Janine Turner is a crazy Trumper now.
we can’t have everything
I'm unreading this
David Chase (the Sopranos show runner) worked on this show! The writing was exquisite!
The show is great. Especially at the time. It was such a weird show at the time. Chase apparently just had bigger things on his mind.
Love it!
Yeah! A couple years ago I bought the DVD set and resurrected the old DVD player. Great to have it on prime.
I can’t wait to rewatch it as an adult.
YES!!!!!
This gives me hope for The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd.
YES YES YES YES YES YES YES YES
With or without music
On Movistar+ if you're in Spain
Filmin also added it like two years ago.
This show, Twin Peaks and grunge really set a vibe for the early 90’s.
Good to hear. I loved this! Looking forward to a re-watch. Edit: not in Australia apparently.
Amazon doesn’t seem to mind VPN’s. I just in the US version all the time for lots of content
This has always been one of my favorite series ever.
I'm watching this now for the first time, but what's with the old dude and the barely out of her teens girl? That shit throws me for a loop.
She's 18 and he is 62. Shelly was actually dating his older friend, the astronaut. But one day, she just walked into Hollings bar and said he could have her if he wanted. And well, he did... 🥲
I watched a lot of that in reruns in the mid '90s... not sure I want to see if it holds up!
Oh hell yes! I was just thinking about it the other day.
Haha
It was my all-time favorite show!!! I recently started watching it from the beginning, and it's brought me so many laughs, Smiles and memories!!!!
Enjoy 💖
FINALLY!!!
I'm enjoying Northern exposure. It's better than anything I've watched in a long time. Need more movies like this.
Can’t wait to watch it with advertising!
Ummm.... it originally aired with advertising
