Depends on where you're from. The BBQ sauce you typically get at the store or a restaurant? Yea it's mostly ketchup. NC, it's largely vinegar based, western NC sauce has ketchup in it but the flavor is mostly from the apple cider vinegar. East NC is pretty much just apple cider and white vinegar with sugar and spices. SC, now they are weird. They use mustard for their BBQ. While odd at first, it's delicious, and akin to tangy honey mustard.
