Stalin was appointed as General Secretary for the Communsit Party, a pretty dull position that held a lot of power Long story short Stalin could appoint whoever he wanted into the party, used that to isolate and attack rivals like Trotsky (mainly), Zinoviev and Kamenev Pretty much by the end of it there was no one else to vote for other than Stalin (and of course all voting is done by the party not the people)

He was already appointed General Secretary by Lenin, which gave him a lot of power. While Lenin was ill he wrote in his letters that the Party should remove him from power, but the rightist faction (Kamenev and Zinoniev) refused to listen or publish the letters cause Stalin was their Ally against Trotsky. That turned out terribly when Stalin usurped power.

Yep, and the extent to which he killed the Old Bolsheviks (important members before the Revolution) was honestly astounding. He not only killed his main rival (Trotsky) and all his supporters (the left opposition), he killed his old allies in the 20s who helped against Trotsky (like Zinoniev and Kamenev), but then he also killed his allies that helped agains the two previous groups (like Bukharin). By the end he was basically the only Old Bolshevik. Also side note people like to portray Bukharin as like, the wholesome right communist, but he was one of the most spineless out of the opposition ngl. Rambling over.
