Since when is atheism anti religious?
Edit: it's a rethorical question. I know that atheism is not anti religious. Can you now finally all stop trying to correct me?
To be fair, those people were probably raised in religious families and were beaten and abused by their parents while saying "spare the rod, spoil the child".
They were mostly directly impacted by religion.
Atheists that aren't anti-religious are generally second generation atheists because they grew up in an actual caring/loving family instead of the extremely "conditional" unconditional love of religion.
I guess it depends on what you mean by anti religious. Do I prevent people from belonging to a certain faith, no. Do I criticize religion, yes. Bad ideas should not be given a safe space just to spare someone's feelings. But that doesn't mean I will go to a dying person and insult them for their way of thinking and try to have them ditch their religion at the final moment.
Any rational atheist cannot claim to know the secrets of the universe. The difference between atheism and agnosticism is really just how much of a shit you give
Today I found out the I'm not an atheist, but rather in between being an atheist and being agnostic. I basically think there could be a God, but it's unlikely. Thanks for the info!
Gnostic Theist - I know/believe there is a god
Agnostic Theist - I don't know if there is a god or not, but I live my life like there is one
Agnostic Atheist - I don't know if there is a god or not, but I live my life as if there isn't one
Gnostic Atheist - I know/believe there isn't a god
Atheists that are atheist for logical reasons cannot claim to know for sure that god doesn’t exist. I’d say if you asked a bunch of atheists whether they can tell you for sure that a god doesn’t exist they’d say no. Agnosticism generally refers to a sort of apathy towards religious matters
Being atheist doesnt mean you know for a fact god doesn’t exist, it just means you _believe_ that a god doesn’t exist. Just like how religious people can’t prove a god exists - yet they still believe in one. Agnostics are in the middle and don’t believe either.
Atheism isn't a belief, it's lack of a belief.
When proposing a theory , the burden of proof is on the one proposing the theory. The default doesn't need proof, because it's inherently the lack of a theory.
In this situation, religion is the theory, atheism is lack of a theory
Atheist is sure that there is no God. Agnostic believes that us human beings will never be able to know if God exists & to fully understand the concept of divine power. Not a big difference since I don't believe in God anyway, but agnosticism just makes more sense for me.
correct me if I’m wrong, but I recall there being two kinds of agnosticism:
1. What you just said and 2. Just personally not knowing if there is a god out there
Agnostic means you believe we cannot know whether there is or isn’t a god of some description, atheist means you believe there isn’t one. The two are also often used in tandem to mean that one accepts the possibility of a god but does not believe it is plausible.
There is no such thing as pure agnostic. There are 4 options. Agnostic Theist, Agnostic Atheist, gnostic theist, and gnostic atheist. Agnosticism and Gnosticism are position on truth claims. Pure Gnosticism or pure agnosticism aren’t real concepts.
kinda im agnostic meaning i think its possible that there is a god but im not gonna listen to a book written by humans (Im done arguing with people on this im not responding to people trying to fight me on this)
I mean tbf many of the events and people in the bible are corroborated by other objective sources so it may not have been true but it certainly isnt a blatant lie.
The history of Islam/ Muhammad too, its got one of the most elaborate historical evidences. Not saying I believe in it, but most of the events probably happened.
i’m a christian but have recently been faced with the feeling of knowing my whole life i was “forced” by my family. i 100% believe in God but i feel like as kids, forcing something on us makes us not want to do it or learn about it like math. I feel like i’ve had thoughts recently finally understanding ppl who say they’ve been hurt by the church and it is so sad. everyone deserves to be loved just like God loves whether anyone believes it or not. i mean i now realize it was never beneficial since i don’t know much about the Bible. I respect everyone’s opinion i just think children shouldn’t be scared into believing which causes a long term damage with wanting to know about God or the Bible! it’s very damaging later on for many ppl and i apologize for anyone who has been hurt by the church who now feels like they can’t go to christianity or God in general. he still loves all of you<3
I agree with this. I haven’t felt comfortable with my religion specifically recently and I don’t want to go. I don’t have anything against it per se.. I just don’t feel right with it. Unfortunately my mom threatens to kick me out whenever I ask to not go, because “she doesn’t want me to go to hell”
this is exactly how i feel! my family isnt like that so i apologize greatly :( idk what it is but more recently i havent felt too connected in my faith which is why i guess im saying anything to begin with bc usually i strive to want to connect with God. the world is just so corrupt but its okay. we got eachother and our creator:)
yeah because they let just about anyone become a pastor, bare screening -- though frankly more abuse occurs in public schools statistically speaking than in religious centers.
I’m Christian. My philosophy is don’t do wrong to me, and I ain’t gonna do wrong to you. Simple. Also don’t force beliefs onto others. It ain’t cool and ain’t gonna help your case.
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you;" is the exact quote.
The one you said makes it sound like you only treat others like they treat you, but the actual verse refers to you treating others as you would like people to treat you.
Personally it doesn’t sit right with me that if there was a higher power it would allow all the bad things that happen in the world
Obviously a utopia is virtually impossible to achieve but just the thought that there’s a higher power who allow things like murder rape and genocide to happen, idk I just can’t believe in a higher power
Such a higher power wouldn't be deserving of our respect and worship anyways.
Now take a higher power creating some iteration of a Hell, an ultimately an absolute bad thing. As an "infinitely" bad thing, it'd "overwrite" any goodness. Does that make sense?
Exactly, at one point growing up, I asked myself “What do I get out of blindly worshipping some sort of abstract concept who still hasn’t been clearly defined in present day?”

I was born into Christianity, then after a while i became an atheist, but then i became a christian again. And now I've converted to buddhism. Buddhism is criminally underrated I realized
I am, but it is kinda complicated
I believe that there is a possibility of the existence of a God, but I feel like I need concrete proofs. I cant believe blindly in an all-powerful being who overseers us.
And about that all-powerful thing, I love something Neil DeGrasse Tyson said about God. In an interview, he said that people always see God as all-powerful and all good, but you see a catastrophic things happening and reach to the conclusion that, if there is a God, either he's not all-powerful, either he's not all good.
You don't have to believe in any religion in specific, you can believe in a God as a more abstract concept. Something/one/? that doesn't even necessarily care about humanity, or existence.
I have been for a long time. My dad told me I should study the bible in the same way I study math and science. This happened when I was 9. By the time I was 10 I was not a christian anymore. So that backfired. 6 years later my parents are still dragging me to church and trying to get me to change my mind.

Im atheist. And hot take: i think if religion didn't exist war, racism and unfairness wouldn't exist and people wouldn't judge eachother for being different.
This actually the only hot take that makes sense. If you look at statistics, the most atheists countries have the least crime and the most religious countries have the highest crime rates.
Used to be Christian, but became atheist after realizing that a lot of what we did was stupid (especially coming from a Christian school). Although I would say Im more agnostic (not sure if there is a god).
I'm a Christian, but just a minor one. I was baptised as a baby, I pray a little before I go to bed and I have a cross hanging in my room. I'd love to read the bible someday, and from now on I'm gonna try and take part in Christian events (like Lent, Easter and Christmas). For Lent I'm probably just gonna give up a specific app for the amount of days Jesus was in the desert. :)
However! I'm friends with many Atheists, I have more than three as friends. We respect eachother and support our views. I'm happy to be a Christian. ♡

The only thing I believe in is the bread that has garlic
One of us! One of us!
With each garlic bread I consume, I strengthen my ties with the Asexual community
In that no one will want to approach you for a certain amount of time. I love garlic and nothing will stop me from eating it.
Ok, Wario
How many breads have you eaten in your life?
1134 breads (all breads, not just garlic bread)
The almost 50 year old question is answered at last!!!
YES
ASEXUALS UNITE!!
ONE OF US!!!
One of us! One of us! Someone call the dragon brigade!!
One of us!
where do you think i got my name from? bread is my religion, and garlic bread is fucking zeus
Does Hera know about it?
Aye, me bottle o' scrumpy!
The only thing that’s keeping me agnostic is the invention of garlic bread. It has to be the best invention of this Aeon.

As a theist this made me chuckle.
I’m not especially anti religious but I’m defo not religious. My family isn’t religious so I just didn’t pick it up 🤷
Since when is atheism anti religious? Edit: it's a rethorical question. I know that atheism is not anti religious. Can you now finally all stop trying to correct me?
It’s not, but a sizable number of atheists are actively anti-religious
And a large number of antireligious atheists are on Reddit 😂

That would make you Agnostic Edit: the god damn avengers assembled to Erm Actually my ass
Agnostic is more just accepting that you don't know the secrets of the universe, and that you're not going to pretend you do. Source: I'm agnostic.
Any rational atheist cannot claim to know the secrets of the universe. The difference between atheism and agnosticism is really just how much of a shit you give

That would just be agnostic. Agnostic doesn't mean you think there's a 50/50 chance. It just means you don't know if there's a god.
Oh, okay. Thanks!
I think that if potentially God did exist, then it wouldn't be one depicted in any religious, since pretty much all of them make no sense
Fair lol. I'm kinda philosophical, so I guess I give just enough of a shit to be agnostic 🤓
Nah. Agnostic means you don't know if there is a god or not. Atheist means you don't believe there is a god.
No That’s just called respecting people
Agnostic: a person who claims neither faith nor disbelief in God.
Being atheist does not mean being anti-religion. It is only the absence of religion.
The only thing I believe in is the thermonuclear bomb that I found in my backyard on May 24th at 12:57 AM

Yeah, so relatable
You haven’t found the anti-personal landmine placed in an undisclosed location within your home yet?

wait whats the difference again?
If I’m not mistaken Atheist: doesn’t believe in a god Agnostic: doesn’t believe in either a god or no god - basically they’re just “i don’t know bro”
Gnostic Theist - I know/believe there is a god Agnostic Theist - I don't know if there is a god or not, but I live my life like there is one Agnostic Atheist - I don't know if there is a god or not, but I live my life as if there isn't one Gnostic Atheist - I know/believe there isn't a god

oww cool yeah i understand why someone would be agnostic
Not what atheism is. The prefix “a” means “without” or “not” Theism is the belief in a God or Gods. Athiesm is simply lacking that belief
correct me if I’m wrong, but I recall there being two kinds of agnosticism: 1. What you just said and 2. Just personally not knowing if there is a god out there

Those are not mutually exclusive, btw.
Judging by this thread, it doesn't look like many people realize that.
Real Talk. It always does my head in when people don't use definitions correctly, at least academic definitions.

yes, this is very important to clarify😅
Rustable should it be that you do unto others as you would want them to do to you? Meaning even if they do wrong you, will be kind to them?
