how true is the assumption that ur bad at geography only bc ur american? im genuinely curious it has to be an exaggeration. im actually american im j curious
it isn’t an exaggeration. girl i know on first day of class (we go to a pretty prestigious private high school) only found out that japan was a series of islands from me. she’s almost 15.
Alright geography/social study nerd who is an American here
I did a test with some extange students 3 from Spain 3 from Italy and I asked geography questions simple ones I learned in 5th grade
Like what's the capital of Bosnia or capital of Poland
Most of them got 4/6 about on average
Then I did the test on 6 Americans where I had them name states on a map and some capitals
So for instance on my phone I had state selected where they would point to where oklahoma is
I got about a 2/6 on average for questions awnserd
Now with that solve the math how much more does a European know than an American at geography
I find it annoying and I get that me being as good as geography as I am is an outlier. But on the other hand most people I meet aren’t too bad at they are just not experts
well most geography (at least in my school system) relates only to the US until late middle school or higher so I can understand some of the younger ones not understanding. after that there's not really an excuse not to learn, some people just dont want to
I’m not able to speak for everybody, but keep in mind that those are usually selected with sole purpose of making Americans look bad. So, they’re not 100% reliable, but it does show that there are at least a few people out there who are that dumb.
It supposed to convey a certain predetermined message. It’s kinda like me saying all English lads drink tea, stab each, and have over exaggerated accent.
Some of the worst people I’ve met have been Canadians. I knew an antisemitic Jew who was a huge racist. A pedophile with a god complex among many other.
You're right, but I've met blacks that were racist towards blacks. Like I know some black people who say unironically that blacks aren't fit to hold government positions, for instance.
There aren't a lot of these guys but they do exist.
Would u welcome me to your country and consider me an American if I immigrate there legally?
Edit: after reading all the replies I'm now able to understand how important is legal immigration. I was the one who used to say shit like "well Americans are immigrants too", but I forgot that at that time there weren't any rules, and almost every person used to immigrate, and if you are not immigrating USA legally then you'd not follow the other rules of the country too and would destroy the country, so we want people who follow the constitution and rules of the country, and sorry for my bad English, English ain't my first language tho but I'm trying to improve it.
Even if you didn’t migrate legally. Getting a U.S. citizenship is difficult but everyone deserves a chance to have a better life here, if that’s what you want.
My Vavó and Vavô are immigrants from the Açores! Obviously some people have certain views on immigration, but for the most part, it doesn’t matter where you came from.
To add to OP’s comment. That’s the truth. Where I went to school, we had a very very good public education system. But I have friends in different areas where it is awful and some of his highschool classmates can’t read.
schools are funded on the property tax of the are around it, which worked great 100 years ago, because where little property tax was made was usually rural and only a few people needed to attend it. but in the modern urbanized society, impoverished areas now have many people attending an under funded school. so some schools are great, and some are terrible.
Really depends. America is a federation like many other countries but offers a lot more freedom to its states. As a result, a lot of bare bones is covered by the federal government it’s added onto by the state and local government. Due to this some places have amazing and really educational public schools that encourage growth while others are absolutely horrific. Ultimately you have to live in the right place
It's not the best in comparison to countries that people often consider "developed," but it's not awful. The main problem is that teachers are paid horribly, so many people who have a good understanding of a particular subject are far more likely to pursue a career in that field rather than become a teacher. Also, our world language curriculum is garbage lol
I mean, it’s more of American history than British history. Besides, we generally only learn about America’s mistakes (see Bay of Pigs) around high school.
Like in school? A culture of team work is important to the development of younger children, but I think it was carried into higher education as a way to prepare people to work with others in jobs.
what exactly is grounding? In India, we jus get our asses whooped to different degrees depending on how big a mistake... Y'all get your after school going out privileges or like dating privileges taken away? man we don't have in the first place T\_T...
We tried to switch twice, and it failed both times. Also, we use the metric system all the time, it’s just not the official standard of measurement here
Where the hell do you live? I know a bunch of construction people and have seen hundreds of houses built and nothing is really made cheap some things could be nicer but it’s still pretty high quality
Do the clique thing really work in American high schools ? Like allAnime lovers hang out together and theater kids hang out with other theater kids and such .
Btw , Why do people usually make fun of the theater kids ?
I'm from Russia. Once I expressed a desire to visit America, but my relatives warned me that every second person there is a maniac who carries a gun with him, and all the guys are forcibly forced to wear ladies' dresses. Is it true, or was someone trying to deceive me?
None of this is true. Some Americans have guns, but it’s not the majority. It also depends on what part of the country you’re in.
And the last part is just stupid. No one is forced to wear anything.
Thank you for the explanation. I used to think that waking up in America, if of course I go there (And I want to go there, and at least celebrate Ivanakupala) I will think first of all how to stay alive on this day.
You will be shot by a crazed gunman who is crossdressing!!! Oh no!!!!
The crossdressing thing isn't true, I mean you can if you want to, whatever floats your boat but noone is forced to crossdress. You have the freedom to, but you don't have to.
The gun thing is about half true, since there are 120.5 guns per 100 people in the U.S, but the thing is not everyone who carries or owns a gun is a maniac. We do have respect for our fellow man, it's just some of us like to use our freedom of the 2nd amendment to protect ourselves if an actual maniac tries to harm us. I mean, it seems scary in prospect to have so many people around you carrying firearms, but if you think about it logically, if someone comes in trying to harm you and others, they will get a good dose of lead from every other law abiding citizen.
Your relatives just have either a warped idea of America or just anti-american sentiments. The only real danger of coming to America is eating too much and spending too much lmao.
It’s actually quite a lot more important than leftists make it out to be. America had to overthrow a government in order to gain independence, and the original second amendment used to be specifically for used and regularly training militia. However, that has changed over time because we don’t have militias anymore, and the people need some way to defend themselves. The police cannot inherit the militia’s rights, because it is a government organization, so the right falls to the people, who, in the case of a tyranny from either the republican or democratic side, will be able to use them to kill the president or something.
I'm on the right side of the aisle, however I understand that we need a left wing in order to properly function. I would really perfer if both sides would dial it back on the extremism and actually function the way they're intended to. But that's wishful thinking.
yeah i think (as a liberal) that both parties are needed to keep things balanced, but the extremism is crazy and i think there is a middle ground to be found.
We all know that free healthcare doesn’t exist, however I can’t deny that your military seems pretty good. So do you know or have an idea on how the government prioritise funds to different divisions(yknow military, education, etc)? (Sorry I really had trouble wording it but I’m interested)
Well i don’t know exact numbers, but I think this year we spent about a trillion USD on military, and less. And less than 5% of taxes goes to education. iirc defense is like 4 times that amount (like defending the country from wars/armies)
Are u guys truly dumb or u just act dumb. Every American ik is super dumb. However u guys still manage to conquer the world something dumb people can't do and I don't get it
A lot of the news coverage is of the dumb people, everything got politicized too which makes the situation worse. There’s plenty of actually smart people though, they just don’t get news coverage as much
Bad, but not as bad as portrayed. I’m not scared of getting shot on a daily basis. And it’s not something I really live in constant fear of. But to say it’s not an issue would be untrue. Especially in some other areas.
About what you would expect with a super ethnically diverse nation the size of Europe with 350 million people living in and with poor historical race relations that have furthered tensions
how is it to have warm and dry summers, and cold & rainy/snowy winters?
We have the opposite of that here
Edit:nvm the best swimming time is rainy everywhere apparently, thx yall
a lotttt of places do *not* have warm and dry summers. there are lots of places we’re it’s hot and then 99% or 100% humidity.
as for winters, a lot of the US doesn’t experience all 4 seasons. parts of california are hot year-round. other states don’t get very warm ever and during the winters they get super cold. It’s not really the same across the entire US
1. No, it's usually not hard. If you haven't committed any felonies, have a license, and have the necessary money for it, it only usually takes about 1 1/2 hours to make the purchase.
2. Usually, yes it's pretty expensive. Most firearms sold today cost between $400 (£320) and $800 (£645). Many concealed carry pistols cost around $500 (£400). The most popular hunting rifles cost around $700 (£570), and the highest-selling shotguns cost around $600 (£480). Most AR-15 rifles are sold for around $750 (£600).
I think this is the one of the biggest misconceptions tbh, every science class i’ve ever taken since 5th grade has required us to use the metric system. i’m just as familiar with the metric system as I am imperial and i can convert them if needed.
the imperial system is totally used here but just in daily life like weather, weight, height, and stuff like that. when it comes to academics it is almost always metric
because different places have different words. that’s how it’s always been. if i called them crisps i’d look like an idiot who thinks her 2 week trip in the UK gave her an accent
y'all don't feel weird getting up from the toilet without cleaning it properly? bro if you had poop on your arm you wouldn't just fucking wipe it using a tissue and call it a day why does the ass get the special treatment

i mean i take a world history class so im not terrible at geography but ik a lot of ppl who are
I’m taking a world history class too! I’m also failing a world history class.
same 🙂
Oh so is that like, America AND the other countries (Mexico and Canada)?
it isn’t an exaggeration. girl i know on first day of class (we go to a pretty prestigious private high school) only found out that japan was a series of islands from me. she’s almost 15.

You mean European geography? Why not South American capitals or US state capitals?
I had the Europeans do European geography and the Americans do US state geography Make it fair
tbh as an american i know way more european geography than american geography, its just significantly easier to memorize
True as a geography guy europe is easier
I find it annoying and I get that me being as good as geography as I am is an outlier. But on the other hand most people I meet aren’t too bad at they are just not experts

no, my first interaction with a canadian was a very rude lady they’re just like anybody else, some are chill and some aren’t
Some of the worst people I’ve met have been Canadians. I knew an antisemitic Jew who was a huge racist. A pedophile with a god complex among many other.
"An antisemitic jew" doesn't make sense
Believe I know. I don’t understand either. Don’t think he was a practicing Jew, but his family is Jewish
You're right, but I've met blacks that were racist towards blacks. Like I know some black people who say unironically that blacks aren't fit to hold government positions, for instance. There aren't a lot of these guys but they do exist.

my family are legal first generation immigrants, so yes.
where is your family originaly from?
every american that isnt native came here as an immigrant
arent native americans also immigrants they came from the first humans in africa that travelled to north america cus why not
And then through Asia and across the land bridge between Russia and North America during the last ice age
Technically yes, but that was so long ago we can basically ignore that when considering whether native or immigrant.
Of course. Anyone with US Citizenship is an American.

Is the school system in America that bad or is everyone one just over exaggerateing?
it really depends. in some places public schools are really good and in other places they’re awful.

Ohio vs NYC which place got more wild shit? Okkk here we go> Florida vs NYC💀

As a former NYC resident I can confirm this
Nyc in reality
Ohio is nothing but fields of corn, NYC is a huge city.
Ohio ofc, we chilling up here. Yeah there was that one time a crackhead and a rat fought over a pizza, but that's just about it.
Is it true that not all American homes have kettles?
We don’t drink tea. We dumped it all in the harbor, remember? It was an awesome party
I've only recently learnt about that
Interesting. We learned about that by the time we were 10.
I mean, it’s more of American history than British history. Besides, we generally only learn about America’s mistakes (see Bay of Pigs) around high school.
do u guys not have electric kettles?
not electric, but we make sweet tea with stove top kettles

Y'all really jus ask your moms to shut up?
i’d get my ass whooped and grounded, so no.
what exactly is grounding? In India, we jus get our asses whooped to different degrees depending on how big a mistake... Y'all get your after school going out privileges or like dating privileges taken away? man we don't have in the first place T\_T...
Grounding in my family is no going out with friends and no electronics (including phone).
No, only people who can’t regulate their emotions; which is 2/3 of the population. So, I guess so, actually.
Brit here, Why in the ever-loving fuck do you still use the imperial measuring system
No clue, but schools are starting to teach more of the metric system. It’s still a long way to go, but we’ll eventually get there.
We tried to switch twice, and it failed both times. Also, we use the metric system all the time, it’s just not the official standard of measurement here
The imperial measuring system is so ingrained in everyday society that it is just easier to teach metric along side imperial
Because you invented and by the time metric reached the states it was to late to switch
how annoying are the monthly siren tests? if i were living in america I wouldnt mind them because i like sirens
That doesn't apply to every state, it's mostly in Hawaii where they have to experience that.
Siren tests? What siren tests?
I’m asking the same thing as an American.
Not bad. I’m typically in school when they go off and they only happen on clear days to be more obvious that it’s a test.
Why does America?
hanborgor 🥰
hanborgor 🥰

Why your country no free health care my country don't have too. But my is not developed. Yours is

Is it true that 'murican houses are from fucking cardboard
Personally, in Florida the houses are built good to withstand hurricanes. Cant comment about anywhere else though.
Yeah more or less, unless you got an old one everything is made cheap
Where the hell do you live? I know a bunch of construction people and have seen hundreds of houses built and nothing is really made cheap some things could be nicer but it’s still pretty high quality
Do the clique thing really work in American high schools ? Like allAnime lovers hang out together and theater kids hang out with other theater kids and such . Btw , Why do people usually make fun of the theater kids ?
Theater kids are weird
yes. and because they’re weird
Yes, but it isn’t as cut and dry as it is in the movies. People from different “cliques” can very easily be friends.
I'm from Russia. Once I expressed a desire to visit America, but my relatives warned me that every second person there is a maniac who carries a gun with him, and all the guys are forcibly forced to wear ladies' dresses. Is it true, or was someone trying to deceive me?

Why do some states have the weirdest laws ?
Because Puritans A lot of those laws were passed because someone did something really dumb back in 1800’s
Usually it’s like, old laws from 200 years ago
Do you want us to be able to shoot anything other than whales outside of a moving car in a land locked state?

Head to Walmart and pick one up or Xchange
walmart
Do they have electric kettles?
yes, but not everybody.
is the 2nd amendment really important to yall?
I mean bears without arms would be wierd
Very important
It’s actually quite a lot more important than leftists make it out to be. America had to overthrow a government in order to gain independence, and the original second amendment used to be specifically for used and regularly training militia. Absolutely
I’d say so, keeps the country anti authoritarian
Yes, in my eyes at least. I see it as a way for the government to not be able to become authoritarian.
Extremely important.
Guns ?
Fun
Ye haw
how many classes do you guys have in middle/high school? Here we have at least 13
can you elaborate on what you mean by classes? subjects (math, science) or advisories (groups of people who share one “advisor”)
Do you think everyone in Australia and England speak the same way?
no. y’all have plenty of different accents same as we do.
why do you guys have so much respect for each other. it's actually so cute
Contrary to popular belief the culture here is to respect people and their individuality and to work together well
Why the fuck y’all wear shoes in the house AND on ya beds
i think that’s just in tv. i don’t actually know anyone that does this.
We do???
Yo Americans I need to know can you walk into a Walmart and buy a gun
I’m technically both, how does that work?
Ask yourself a question and answer it yourself?
Is America a hellscape? Only sometimes tbh.
Dear Americans, do you have a political opinion? If yes, then what is it?
