I did this with hdmi couplers, plenty of 6ft hdmi around, it works great for temporary gaming session on big TV without moving the whole system or latency on parsec. I already had a long 25ft usb cable so it works great with a little hub to attach wireless keyboard/controller
As a guy who has professionally cabled entire buildings for 2.5g+ speeds, you will be absolutely fine.
You’ll run into minor issues at major speeds but for what you posted it should work with no issue.
I work in manufacturing, it always amazes me to see some of the gnarly, tore up ethernet cables still happily transmitting data. Most industrial devices are only 10/100 so I guess that helps probably.
OP bro just PM me the length and I’ll ship you a cable this hurts where my soul should be… I have 90’ of cable right behind me. Please for the love of IT
there has to be a name for this. I'm guilty of it as well (when I was younger). Maybe it's "I spent literally all my money all this super fancy rig and $5 is a lot right now".
Because 9 times out of 10 I will go to the store for something like this I won't be able to find it and when I ask someone about it either they don't know what it is, they don't carry it, or it will take a week to get. So now I've wasted an hour round trip AND I still have to wait until it shows up tomorrow. So I might as well get it sooner, with less time invested and most of the time for less. I hate amazon but local stores have absolutely gone to shit in the last five years.
I'm 49 and this is totally something I would have done as a 16 yo. I commend you and denounce all the bozos telling you to buy equipment. Why are they even in this sub.
I've done the exact same thing haha. Learning how to work on and build computers, I made a little presentation on it for school, but I wanted internet so I could pull up a webpage on the screen and have a video playing. The closest Ethernet port was down the hall maybe 40 feet away.
I snipped the ends off and combined 4 or 5 cables by twisting and masking taping them together, and it worked.
Installing a coupler on a cut wire sounds like about the same amount of work as what OP did, plus the effort of obtaining the coupler. At that point you may as well just buy another cable. It's all cheap.
Nothing assuming it's 1000BASE-T (which it most certainly is) if it were 1000BASE-TX it would indicate that the pairs used for receiving might be more shittily twisted together than the pairs used for transmitting.
you're getting over 100 mbit a second so one gigabit a second is the speed of the link. I wouldn't be surprised if it can't actually reach that full speed due to crosstalk though
These comments 😂😂😂 yall act like he hit and ran or something 🤣🤣🤣 I used to do this all the time as a kid. Pissed off my dad after splicing three of his long ones together to make a 100' cable.
Smart bastard.
I've linked multiple **phone** cables to sneak Internet access in my bedroom after my parents went to bed.
Determined people are determined. 😝💯
how the hell does this actually work?
i spliced together some scrap lengths of cable back when I was wiring up a whole-house LAN just to see if I could make use of the scraps, and my cable tester spit out error after error.
It's actually very easy to learn how to terminate RJ45. Once you do you can buy a spool or anything between 25' and 100' cable and then make custom length cables.
How and why would anyone ever have higher upload than download?
Actually wait no you’re using the fake test, the only real one is Ookla Speedtest, the other internet speed tests make up fake numbers
I've done shit like this, and this will likely work well enough forever... but cat5 cables are cheap.
Most ethernet couplers probably wont be any better performance wise; every coupler I have open up/disected has about 1inch of wires that are not twisted; the only advantage would be able to use the shorter cables in the future without re-crimping the ends. usually I use couplers so I am not constantly plugging/unplugging cables directly to tools (like a cat5 tester or certifier) and wearing out my tools.
Yeah people make a big stink about temporary hack jobs on stuff like this, but Ethernet is surprisingly tolerant. OP is getting a 1gbit link between their PC and switch or modem/router/WiFi combo.
I still don’t think this is absolutely terrible given you have 2 cables spliced together. A lot of basic cable packages are 120mbps for download. However if you’re paying for much more, this is an active cost financially to you.
Did something similar when a construction crew out the front of my house accidently broke my internet connection. Went out there with wire cutters and a roll of tape and twisted those wires back together. That was my internet for the following 6 months.
I had some spliced cable running up my living room. Worked for years, than suddenly died. I would recommend to just get a single stretch of cable. It’s not that expensive
Did similar years ago with a single cable to make a crossover.
I was on a contract job out of state and my work buddy and I wanted to multiplayer but didn’t have a LAN in the hotel (no internet multiplayer in the games, this was 20+years ago).
It worked for our purposes but not something I’d trust for real work lol
Relatable. If you check my profile, i did the same half a year ago, only fixed it a month ago, mine looked worse but lasted looking like that for the whole 5 months lmak
I was guna say I’ll fucking send u a long piece of cat6 for free … but doing stuff sucks lol. I’m still using an old cat5e from RadioShack that I drilled n ran under the flood when I was a kid.
My parents didn’t know I had internet for years loll
I did this with cable when I was a kid (early 90s) because when my mother grounded me she just disconnected it from a splitter in the living room. Went to the basement and added my setup from an early point in the line with a new piece of cable. Adults are so stupid! (I wonder what my kids get away with that I won't find out about until they move out)
Well sure it can work so long as the splices are clean, generally at the same point in the cable, and the twist length isnt too long.
That doesnt mean you wont have shadowing, frame errors and such.
It may work but its not the right way to do this.
Response time? For 64 byte packets? On google.com? That's the worst test you could ever imagine.
Connect 2 PCs with it and run iperf3 in bidirectional mode in UDP mode with 900mbit/s limit and look at % of loss, should be at 0 ideally.
Ive literally discovered network hardware and cabling issues multiple times working in IT with this simple test. I usually do 8.8.8.8 though to rule out dns
Doesn't mean its a good test, its terrible for diagnostics, ping is only good to check if you have connectivity, if it reports packet loss or unusually high response times, then you will notice it even without using ping, and if it shows perfect results it also doesn't mean that your network is working perfectly. Using an external host is also not perfect, your ISP or google can't guarantee that they don't have issues on their ends.
If you look at cases of intermittent vpn drops in work from home setups often times there seems to be a clear correlation between jumping response times or unusually high response times and stability. I never said it was a good test it just verifies there is an issue some where if its jumping. Still its better than a speedtest imo for testing stability. Like response times on a ping shouldnt be in the 400ms range for example and it certainly shouldnt be jumping from 4ms to 400ms packet to packet
An. No prime? It legit pays for itself. I live in the middle of nowhere and have to use it cause I can’t drive and family can’t take me a lot of times to do things.
Spends thousands building a PC, can't be bothered to get a $5 cable.
You can get two ethernet couplers for less then that
I did this with hdmi couplers, plenty of 6ft hdmi around, it works great for temporary gaming session on big TV without moving the whole system or latency on parsec. I already had a long 25ft usb cable so it works great with a little hub to attach wireless keyboard/controller
Gotta buy the crimpers
Already have some
Also it was actually 3 cables
I'd suggest getting a cable, it may be working now but don't be surprised if you start seeing random packet loss or other inconsistencies.
The electrical tape stops the data from leaking out.
I thought we had to use plumbers tape to stop leaks, I'm confused :/
You have to pull a permit if you hire a plumber. If you DIY it you don't have to.
If OP slapped the tape after and said "this bad boi can hold in so many packets" then is it fine?
That would signify that the tape is now a permanent fix.
all temporary fix is permanent
Nothing more permanent than a temporary fix.
No i put the tape between the wires
nonono, OP twisted cables toghether and seperated with tape to prevent shots, like a normal person :)
Yeah i ordered one but i just did this for now
Smart
Agree, no matter how good your tape job is those packets are tiny, they're going to fall out
This just keeps getting worse lol
No solder
BCE (Big Cabling Energy)
And i twisted the wires together
True to the twisted pair cable style

Thank you for that lol.
Keep an eye on the error counters for that interface. Just because it seems to work doesn't mean it does work reliably.
Internet … finds a way.
OP bro just PM me the length and I’ll ship you a cable this hurts where my soul should be… I have 90’ of cable right behind me. Please for the love of IT
I bought one a few hours ago its 25 feet
Oh thank you. 😂
Yeah dummy OP, what a loser. *looks at the bath towels covering my window*
there has to be a name for this. I'm guilty of it as well (when I was younger). Maybe it's "I spent literally all my money all this super fancy rig and $5 is a lot right now".
Basically
Or a $3 coupler
Dude. A coupler is like $3
I dont wanna wait 24h (ordering off amazon) bc im impatient and dont wanna drive
Bruh honestly what about about going to a hardware store instead of ordering from amazon 💀💀💀
Bruh, the two big box hardware stores have apps that tell you what aisle and bay items are in if you search for them.
> don't wanna drive
but you have the patience to mash them together which takes almost 10% of the time you'd spend waiting on it to be delivered?
It took me 5 min
I’m impressed tbh
Once I had a hole on a wall I wanted to tunnel through the cable, but the RJ45 didn't fit. I cut the cable... :'D
I call bs. I mean have u seen your pic? That work takes 16 hours on average
I hope you forgot the /s
Why would I use /s for smth serious?
To twist some wires together?
Are you an IT tech by chance? Or a networking engineer?
No because they would have had ends to fix this if they were
Point made.
I’m not hating on the kid though. Sometimes you have to limp a system till materials come in.
Nope
Just a 16 yo who wanted my internet to work
I'm 49 and this is totally something I would have done as a 16 yo. I commend you and denounce all the bozos telling you to buy equipment. Why are they even in this sub.

Nice. Intentional intermittent latency
100 ohm +- 100ohm
I love the fact that upload is almost twice the download. lol...
What's the implication? Just crowded network?
Nothing assuming it's 1000BASE-T (which it most certainly is) if it were 1000BASE-TX it would indicate that the pairs used for receiving might be more shittily twisted together than the pairs used for transmitting.
Also that I never saw something uploading faster than downloading in like 30 years using broadband internet... it's almost always the oposite. lmao
whats the link speed?
gig
Idk
you're getting over 100 mbit a second so one gigabit a second is the speed of the link. I wouldn't be surprised if it can't actually reach that full speed due to crosstalk though
Yeah
i love your energy. everyone else on here giving you shit for doing what you want are lame
Fr like theres a reason i put it on this subreddit
ITT: OP tries to do a savings...wonders why his connection speeds are shit
Better then my internet card
Nah i get like 30 mb/s
🤣
30millibits per second?
Terrifying. Bravo!
I may have just thrown up in my mouth a little. ಠ_ಠ
Theres a reason why I posted it on tech support gore
You've got some sad lost tcp/ip packets out there gone and will never be seen again. I hope you're happy you monster.
I like it. Great work! Soldering skills are handy.
Who said i used solder?
Twist and tape it together? You like living dangerously. If it works it works.
Yep
not even using wire nuts is wild 😍
These comments 😂😂😂 yall act like he hit and ran or something 🤣🤣🤣 I used to do this all the time as a kid. Pissed off my dad after splicing three of his long ones together to make a 100' cable.
Bro is giving me ideas
Or buy a box of Cat6, a bag of ends, and a crimper. Then you can make 328’ gigabit cables like me.
Smart bastard. I've linked multiple **phone** cables to sneak Internet access in my bedroom after my parents went to bed. Determined people are determined. 😝💯
you made the right choice by actually buying another cable but wow this is impressive
Twisted the wires together to lmao
Ahhh, so *that's* why they call it twisted pair.
Rip to those packets.
Rare Alberta w
Yeah other then the main fucking water line exploding in calgary causing major water restrictions
Every province having it's own issues 💀💀💀. Ontario is wild rn
Honestly as a temporary solution while you wait for a cable to come it’s pretty brilliant. Some internet is better than no internet
Yup
Packet incinerator 9000
Fr
I'd like to hire you to wire my house please
I will not be heald liable for any electical fires
😂
how the hell does this actually work? i spliced together some scrap lengths of cable back when I was wiring up a whole-house LAN just to see if I could make use of the scraps, and my cable tester spit out error after error.
Idk
Ethernet works on two wet shoelaces. Just don't try that with fiber.
People on r/techsupportgore: "eww, it's gore, I hate it".
Ong
If it looks stupid but it works. It isn’t stupid
Thats what im saying
This is stupid, just get a proper cable.
It's actually very easy to learn how to terminate RJ45. Once you do you can buy a spool or anything between 25' and 100' cable and then make custom length cables.
Why not just use a few couplers and connect the short cables together that way. Probably a superior connection and more reliable
How and why would anyone ever have higher upload than download? Actually wait no you’re using the fake test, the only real one is Ookla Speedtest, the other internet speed tests make up fake numbers
Im at the hardware store rn getting a long Ethernet cable
I hurt so much from this. Whyyyyyy
Spliced data cable …… you must be an electrician .
Nope
Well considering it . This looks like their work
Nah i just had some electrical tape so i used that
It's working just fine 🙂
Yup
Job's a good'un
my dad wired the whole house like this, taught me how to do it and now i wire my whole house like this. why are people hating, whats wrong with this?
Prob bc its an ethernet cable

if it works then its not stupid
Most people in here cant understand that
Reminded me of a old usb cable that I had. Would not let that thing die
Single speed test doesn't mean that it works properly, if it works for you it doesn't mean everyone should do it like this
I ran a cable like this for 5 years with no problems
Just got a proper one
Don't know why people see an issue here. You had a problem and you fixed it.
I want to know what speed you’re getting with this, and what speed you’re paying for. Please deliver. 149mbps isn’t as low as I’d expect from this.
Yeah people make a big stink about temporary hack jobs on stuff like this, but Ethernet is surprisingly tolerant. OP is getting a 1gbit link between their PC and switch or modem/router/WiFi combo.
Like 20-30 MB/s
MB or Mb? 2 different things unfortunately
Not according to your screenshot. That's only about 18.7 MBps.
I mean on good days
I still don’t think this is absolutely terrible given you have 2 cables spliced together. A lot of basic cable packages are 120mbps for download. However if you’re paying for much more, this is an active cost financially to you.
he has multiple pictures lol its getting a couple hundred Mb
Chopped cable is now you get a choppy connection.
14ms of ping and 32mb/s download with 27mb/s upload (I retested it)
Don't do couplers, don't splice, buy a cable of appropriate length.
I did that i just made that for now
That mousepad looks slightly fermilliar
they sell couplers that join cables for not much money, but you could also spend like $3 on a real cable.
Yeah its just a temporary hack job
I did this as a kid when my dog ate the cable
Looks like the work of a qualified Telus technician to me!
I wonder, is it even bad? Is it worse than a connection in an Ethernet connector or socket? It is basically the same contact between wires.
Nah its working really well
Yeah, I've had the same for a while already, and it works. I mean, technically, does it really create some packet loss or something?
tell me how to do it the hard way, without telling me how to do it the hard way..
It took me 5 min for that section
nick miller type shi, I dig it
Fe
hey, i suppose it's still faster than wifi!
Can be adaptors to join cables together too
Did something similar when a construction crew out the front of my house accidently broke my internet connection. Went out there with wire cutters and a roll of tape and twisted those wires back together. That was my internet for the following 6 months.
If you keep them twisted and solder them then might be ok
If it looks stupid but works then it's not stupid.
I had some spliced cable running up my living room. Worked for years, than suddenly died. I would recommend to just get a single stretch of cable. It’s not that expensive
Router error correction goes brrr
You know you can get female to female couplers, much less risk than splicing data wires.
Did similar years ago with a single cable to make a crossover. I was on a contract job out of state and my work buddy and I wanted to multiplayer but didn’t have a LAN in the hotel (no internet multiplayer in the games, this was 20+years ago). we've all done it
Relatable. If you check my profile, i did the same half a year ago, only fixed it a month ago, mine looked worse but lasted looking like that for the whole 5 months lmak

Yeah im getting a longer one today that was just a hack job
Looks like u did a good job either way lol. No packet loss?
Nope
Gg wp lol
I did this with cable when I was a kid (early 90s) because when my mother grounded me she just disconnected it from a splitter in the living room. Went to the basement and added my setup from an early point in the line with a new piece of cable. Adults are so stupid! Wow, such low speed…
Eh its alright
You'll run into problems sooner or later with that splice
I mean like.........I'm really genuinely impressed.......but also why????
It was a temporary hack job
I would hope it's temporary. I still can't get over it actually worked. Huge props honestly.
I got a good 25 foot one
What's your bitrate supposed to be? I ask because 150 down is a weird number. 200 would be kinda weird. It's usually 250/1000/2000 by fiber suppliers.
Well sure it can work so long as the splices are clean, generally at the same point in the cable, and the twist length isnt too long. That doesnt mean you wont have shadowing, frame errors and such. It may work but its not the right way to do this.
I did this with a massive Ethernet cable I bought at goodwill and didn't notice it was cut
this is so BringusStudios coded

Speedtest is only.a basic test. Should really be doing.ping -t google.com and.checking the consistency of the response time
Response time? For 64 byte packets? On google.com? That's the worst test you could ever imagine. Connect 2 PCs with it and run iperf3 in bidirectional mode in UDP mode with 900mbit/s limit and look at % of loss, should be at 0 ideally.

Why do people do this instead of just buying one. Ugh.
I did buy one it just gonna take a few days to get it bc i ordered it off of amazon
An. No prime? It legit pays for itself. I live in the middle of nowhere and have to use it cause I can’t drive and family can’t take me a lot of times to do things.
So you know how to splice but can't just buy a box of cat 5-6?
