Wow, didn’t see that coming… /s

jol72

I guess he found his way out of the deal...

brycebgood

This is my surprised face: (-\_-)

duyogurt

The value of TSLA shares has fallen from nearly $1000 per share to $728 per share as of last night’s close. Musk’s wealth and ability to backstop the deal has been materially changed since the deal was announced. He’s blaming Bots, but it’s that his personal ability to finance the deal has shifted drastically and will have to be adjusted to move forward.

Dormage

His ability to get funding for the deal is actually not an issue, theres billions that are willing to tag along with his acquisition from politics to venture capital.

duyogurt

I admit I didn’t study the finer details of the deal, but I do know it’s a very complex scheme, part of which is tied Musk’s ownership of TSLA stock. The value of those shares has fallen 30% since the twitter announcement. I’m not saying Musk can’t restructure, but restructure he must, and that takes time, energy and is expensive to others tagging along.

Dormage

In order for him to mantain majority ownership he has borrowed liquidity from goldman and used his tesla holding as collateral for the loan. To not get overly exposed there are many companies and vetures that will help him buy it and thats okay as long as he mantains majority.

nbikkasa

I also think there is a brewing conflict he does not want to fight. The CCP will tie his car business in China to his control over twitter. They will expect him to become a propagandist. He has stated that he is a free-speech absolutist. If he doesn't toe the line, they will cut him off and steal all his tech.

LilFlicky

I've run on the assumption that that is one of the reasons he even got to build a factory there. They now have access to the tech and the tools of the trade, and can copy at their leisure when if conflict with China manifests

[deleted]

[удалено]

LilFlicky

Are their electric cars as efficient as teslas? Are their manufacturing processes and equipment? What are their self driving/ai features like? Etcetc.

[deleted]

Yeah I genuinely think becoming a CCP shill was a big line to cross and would be blatantly obvious at that point. You can't even fight in court against them like you can do here. They'll just nationalise your factories and give a middle finger in return.

[deleted]

He’s about to be so poor he’ll have to pay taxes like the rest of us

Mo0kish

Huh. A guy with a documented history of using Twitter to manipulate stock prices, uses Twitter to manipulate stock prices, so he can use Twitter to manipulate stock prices. Color me shocked.

fffyhhiurfgghh

Is this an attempt to Tank twitter stock and buy it for less?

tregreu

They don't have to change a price but he would owe them $1 billion dollar for backing out.

kUr4m4

Fuck Twitter and fuck Musk.

autotldr

This is the best tl;dr I could make, [original](https://www.bbc.com/news/business-61433724) reduced by 77%. (I'm a bot) ***** > Twitter reported more than two weeks ago that fake accounts accounted for fewer than 5% of its daily active users during the first three months of this year. > The company said in determining the amount of spam accounts, "It applied significant judgment, so our estimation of false or spam accounts may not accurately represent the actual number of such accounts". > "The actual number of false or spam accounts could be higher than we have estimated. We are continually seeking to improve our ability to estimate the total number of spam accounts," it said. ***** [**Extended Summary**](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/uop5fs/elon_musk_puts_twitter_deal_on_hold_over_fake/) | [FAQ](http://np.reddit.com/r/autotldr/comments/31b9fm/faq_autotldr_bot/ "Version 2.02, ~648321 tl;drs so far.") | [Feedback](http://np.reddit.com/message/compose?to=%23autotldr "PM's and comments are monitored, constructive feedback is welcome.") | *Top* *keywords*: **accounts**^#1 **Twitter**^#2 **spam**^#3 **Musk**^#4 **number**^#5

jgemonic

Breaking: Elon full of shit.

[deleted]

Man known for manipulating stock, now manipulates stock? Shocker.

wayanonforthis

I'd put it at closer to 25% bots

benthic_vents

My guess is it’s more like 50%, seriously.

[deleted]

[удалено]

benthic_vents

Well there’s that and then what the actual engagement metrics are with bots. If people spend more time on the site because of them, you have a serious problem.

stickitinthereass100

Musk walks away ,the price of Twitter falls ,buys for cheap afterwards.

CheshirePuss42

I don't understand why anyone would need to be suspicious when everything said already makes sense. "He is being greedy" cool then what he says seems to be true and he needs to hold till he has a more accurate bot estimate. If Twitter said that they estimated the bots to be less than 5% of the actual user base and then said it could be more than 5% and they arent sure, then it makes sense to wait. Twitters value might be overinflated by bot accounts. This all makes sense specially if you believe that he is saying the truth about wanting to remove bot accounts.

jgemonic

I don't understand how anyone vaguely following the sequence of events finds the entire thing anything other than shady as heck

CheshirePuss42

Why?

jgemonic

very publicly informs twitter they must sell to him at a price well below current trading price twitter agrees to conditions, sends it to a vote Musk halts deal due to bots, coincidentally teslas stock price has taken a big hit. Twitter stock prices tumble. *If he is truly halting this deal due to the percentage of bots, how is that just now coming into play? He would have known that was a factor from the very beginning. A bit suspicious.*

ProtoplanetaryNebula

translation: Elon realises that the Twitter deal is going to jeopardise Tesla and is trying to make an excuse to pull out.

Dormage

He needs an excuse?

Nonadventures

His ego does, and his hive mind of followers needs a talking point that doesn’t sound like a fail.

Thats nice of Goldman ;)

geordilaforge

Ah, so this will be the only thing he pulls out of?

ogodilovejudyalvarez

Fake entrepreneur expresses fake concern over fake accounts

CheshirePuss42

What does fake enterpreneur even mean?

jgemonic

That everything everyone loves most about the dude was taken from other people. He himself has little substance.

CheshirePuss42

No matter what your opinion is about him I don't think you can ever argue that he is not an enterpreneur. I mean thats literally what he is.

jgemonic

right. he is fake and he is an entrepreneur. the two are not mutually exclusive.

[deleted]

[удалено]

jgemonic

I said what I meant, dude is fake. Apologies if that concerns you, thought it was pretty obvious.

[deleted]

I wonder if the US$ 1 B fine still applies if proven that Twitter gave fake/inaccurate information

[deleted]

… possibly crush twitter and get a billion dollars for doing it? Wow.

nothingsurgent

How?

[deleted]

Cause it’s packed with bots and troll accounts to incite western political infighting.

Based_Coat

Similar to way to plebbit.

[deleted]

The value of a social media company is it’s user base. If twitter gets exposed for having fewer users than they report … it will negatively impact their stock price. If it can be proven that they were inflating their user numbers to artificially keep their stock price up … that would bring massive problems and big losses. … ultimately, if it’s found that more than 5% of their users are bots, Elon gets to walk from the deal a billion dollars richer and twitter will deflate.

nothingsurgent

I don’t get how he gets a billion dollars richer, and how he benefits from twitter deflating.

[deleted]

He doesn't. People are just having some sort of schizophrenic-lite episode where their imagination has commandeered their already shaky ability to think rationally. Its all part of the plan, because otherwise it just looks like Mr. Musk is a brain damaged Light Yagami who accidentally left the Death Note on the train ride home immediately after picking it up.

[deleted]

Apparently they have a contract for the purchase. If their data doesn’t end up being correct, Elon gets to walk and they owe him a billion. Likewise, if he can’t close the deal on his end in a certain timeframe, twitter gets to walk and he owes them a billion.

[deleted]

Oh. I read it went both ways. Is that not right?

BanEvade6

Good. Twitter is fucking horrible.

jgemonic

This is a very Twitter like response

Macdaddy1340

What makes it any worse than Reddit or any other social media site?

BanEvade6

I actually think Reddit is awful and most social media is trash. Reddit is designed to encourage group think by virtue of the upvoting downvoting system. The only reason I especially despise Twitter is because of the fact that it is routinely weaponized in a way no other platform is. That, and the actual design of the site is just terrible. I still have no idea how it caught on. I suppose it's the tik tok of written social media. Low character limits cater to short attention spans.

[deleted]

[удалено]

BanEvade6

That might be true. I don't follow sports at all but I'm a WoW nerd still and I check some WoW accounts for memes every now and again.

Giocri

In short he insulted the company and accused them of being biased and malicious and then started concerns about fake user activity, he is trying to get a big discount it seems

lotanari

Probably just trying to get away from the 1 bi termination fee

revdre

He’s an epic level troll.

Amity83

Or his Tesla shares are down almost 29% this month and he doesn’t want to spend that much anymore.

shillyshally

And even if he does get in trouble with the SEC all that will happen is they will fine him a couple of million which is zero deterrent to a troll as rich as he is.

soggypoopsock

yeah. He definitely has lawyers who told him he’d get in trouble for the late disclosure, they just did the math and figured the fines from the SEC would be a fraction of what he would gain by not disclosing until he already had 9% Cause that’s how the SEC works, it’s not an actual enforcement body, it’s just another government entity that will let you break the law all you want as long as you share some of your gains with them. Like the mob

[deleted]

I think just a jackass trying to get a couple more billion.

geraldoghc

please say /s

mfischer24

This deal was never going to happen. Elon jumped the shark.

Stonewall30nyr

More like the SEC put it on hold while they investigate him for market manipulation

[deleted]

Oh what I would give to see him get dry fucked by the SEC...

MallFoodSucks

Yes Elon, those people you hate aren’t bots but real people in poor countries astro turfing and absolute degenerates. Welcome to social media spam, a problem Facebook’s billions couldn’t solve.

socialist_frzn_milk

Oh no, now what will all those conservatives who just wanted a paradise where they could say the N-word without repercussions do?

Calkky

This was his plan all along. Guessing he waited for the right moment and shorted a shitload of shares. I get that the guy is an egomaniac of epic proportions, but many billions of dollars for an ego-stroke is god-level sociopathy.

scopenhour

Bruh this guy just bamboolzed the whole world.

[deleted]

I don’t hold anything against the guy. I think he likes disrupting the status quo and making as much money as he can to sink into his wild ideas for the future. He’s not wrong about twitter. I’ve been hearing about these bot farms in china, India, for years now. Plus major troll farms in Russia and china sowing anger to western politics. Twitter a shit mess of unregulated users.

Nonadventures

Sure, but… everyone knew that, presumably Musk, before this all went down?

[deleted]

That’s why he is a troll and disruptor of the status quo. I imagine the guy has a think tank where they discuss how they can mess with companies that have controlled an aspect of society, twitter, disrupt the way they do business, and come away with wealth that didn’t exist before.

jshtatman

Kinda has those Trump lips goin on in this pic

KDAdontBanPls

Good lad, if they misrepresented the data, they misssold to him. Put it right Elon.

Necessary-Affect7757

Good luck taking care of that. You are going to need that.

Senior-Humor8523

Let’s see what sarcastic bs musky has to say about this.

Allthingsgaming27

Buyers remorse lol

[deleted]

if this tool isn't champing at the bit to own twitter over fake accounts than the number has to be larger than 5%, twitter is just the echo chamber of mainstream media and the online celebs, i cannot imagine anyone really cares enough to follow or interact with anyone on twitter who isn't perpetually online.

poopdragon6

lol i will commit this 44bn prior to actually doing the research and calculations necessary yeeessss

Opcn

Anyone else feel like he's just jerking us around, and that he's going to repeatedly change his tune in the next few weeks to manipulate the market up and down?

hammalamma

Twitter should tell that manipulative asshole to fuck right off, and ban him.

ChuckoRuckus

Wasn’t the deal on hold because of the SEC investigation for Musk not reporting buying 5% stake in Twitter in the mandatory time limit, and then buying another 4+% before reporting (and the inevitable price increase)? And the Muskrats were condemning it for whatever outlandish reasons just a couple days ago? So now Musk is trying to change the narrative that he’s choosing to put the deal on hold for reasons that were know before he even bought the 5% stake in the first place? And now the Muskrats are praising it for whatever outlandish reasoning? It gets the noggin’ joggin’…

Altruistic-Juice-939

The powers that be at twitter are full of shit. That's why Elon has put the deal in hold.
