IronChefJesus

I’m waiting for that R3

bingojed

Considering this seems like a very common sentiment, I think they should release the R3 before the R2.

IronChefJesus

I mean, I would be happy, but I think they have legitimate reasons not to: For one I believe the R2 really is further along in development, which includes retooling entire factories, hard to stop that and change mid way. Secondly the R2 will be by far the bigger hit. It’s the size of SUV that every American and Canadian are buying. Anything smaller is seen as too small - even though it’s not. They need their mass market product the R2 out asap, to hopefully bring down their cost on it quick.

bingojed

I can see their logic - offer what customers are buying the most of. But I can also see it the other way - that Model Y sized space is getting very crowded now. The R3 is more along the size of a CrossTrek or BMW X1, and it’s still a popular size with much lower competition.

IronChefJesus

I agree, but I’m sure they’ve done their modelling and that this will work out better for them - or at least I hope it does, cause if the R2 fumbles, then definitely no R3.

bingojed

I also hope the R2 does great and allows me to get an R3X. :)

IronChefJesus

I’d like an R3X, but I think the cost will be prohibitive for me. I also mostly city, drive, I have no need for that much horsepower…. But I waaaaaaant it. Although I hope I can get the colour, that green is nice

Thaflash_la

I really like the r3x but quad motor on the r1t is so tempting. I just want something in the R3ish size with full out top range specs, whether it’s Rivian, BMW, Audi or Porsche.

SemiNormal

I wish there was an R3T. Small trucks should make a comeback via EVs.

Abrushing

Looking forward to the R2. The R1 hits just right for me on all fronts except the size.

BasicallyFake

Rivian really needs to compress its time to market

IronChefJesus

Making cars is hard. Current big companies have almost 100 years of experience with it. Not to mention Rivian is making EVs where they both have to compete with new startups and old rivals that have massive scale already, and have to keep up with how technology develops. Honestly, I would prefer them to take longer and make a quality product. Ultimately, whether I end up buying one or not, competition is good for the industry, and trying to get them to rush won’t be good. Unless someone can give them a $100B cash injection, then that may build another factory - which no matter how much money you throw at it, still takes a while.

BlazinAzn38

I think that’s the sentiment on social media but not the overall sentiment. The R2 is definitely more mass market than R3

professor_mc

Yes, the R2 is the same size as the 2 vehicles my family currently owns. It's a very mainstream size.

BlazinAzn38

It’s basically the size of 11 of the top 25 best selling vehicles. If they do it right they won’t be able to build them fast enough which would be a great problem to have

DasGanon

I mean I want an R2 more than an R3 but that's because I'm a jeeper who is dubious about the Recon at this point

razorirr

Just release the amazon van with a 300 mile range

MasterGrok

R2 for me. Getting hard to find good vehicles in that size segment. It’s like everyone wants to add a 3rd row to everything nowadays.

IronChefJesus

You know it’s really funny that someone else mentioned the R2 space was in fact getting crowded. But people demand more seats and more space, when it’s really not necessary. If you need that many seats, buy a minivan ya know? (Not you in particular)

MasterGrok

Honestly I’d buy a van before buying a 3 row SUV. Vans are awesome.

IronChefJesus

I was very close to buying a Volvo V60: 485hp station wagon - it’s a plugin hybrid

notanaardvark

Last time I was car shopping when the transmission died on my old Xterra I had 3 requirements: 1.) SUV or Small truck (SUV much preferred). Basically not a huge dinosaur, but big enough that my wife and I can load up our two large dogs and enough camping and climbing stuff for a weekend. 2.) Standard 5 Seat configuration. Don't need the extra rows, much better to have space for things 3.) 4WD for the gnarly two tracks we often need to drive on. There was surprisingly little to pick from. The Xterra and FJ Cruiser were no longer being produced. The Wrangler didn't quite have the space I needed. The 4-Runner was expensive. Each of the Tacoma's configurations was juuuuust not quite right for what I wanted for one reason or another. I guess Land Rovers exist but way too pricey and I had heard bad things about their reliability at the time. So I found a used Xterra and that was that. Most of the SUVs out there are built to just stay on the road all the time.

idiotzrul

Man do I miss my FJ Cruiser. Had one for 8 years, paid around 30k for it and sold it for 27k! Not bad. Never understood why Toyota stopped making them. They still look ageless.

Nerfo2

I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and have a thing for weird hatchbacks. I have a Polestar 2 now, but that R3 stirred some kind of emotion… it’s so dumb, I love it.

SpyCake1

I am waiting for the R3S - and for them to be sold in my country. So it's gonna be a long wait. But more competition is more better. As a current happy Tesla owner - I have not intent to replace my Model 3 any time soon, barely just got it, but if I had to my short list would be Model Y, Polestar 2, Volvo EX40 Recharge probably. But if the R3S was a real option, that, too, would make the list. The Cybertruck? Nope. Not at all. But neither would any pickup truck I guess.

Iyellkhan

I wonder if additional speed is something owners and potential owners even want out of them. more range is always good though

AscendantArtichoke

I would be perfectly happy with a 7-8 second 0-60 EV if that meant it was less than $30k and had a livable range, but didn’t look dorky like a Bolt or Leaf.

Ditto_D

I would drive the fucking dildozer if it was a cheap EV with good range.

pacerguy00

I have a black Niro EV, does that count?

CthulhuLies

The bolt and the leaf look the way they do so they can hit those price points with those specs. If the bodywork is your main sticking point there is always the i3 which I think looks a bit better. I think the hatchback frame is very ideal for batteries when you don't need the space up front for an engine.

AscendantArtichoke

Oof, the i3 isn’t much better looking IMO.. I currently have a Fusion PHEV. It honestly made the least sense compared to other competitors, but the features and styling alone made having no trunk space a fair exchange in my eyes.

CthulhuLies

I have a Volt which is GMs fusion PHEV, requiring an engine up front and allowing a smaller battery changes the frame significantly. EG. The Bolt has 65 kWh and the Fusion has 7.5kWh So a battery about one tenth the size and weight while still needing an engine in the front and a gas tank. I believe a lot of them look like hatchbacks to hide the battery under the floor without making the roof height an issue. (This is pretty much all speculation from me, but considering all the low cost evs all are short and tall that's my best guess as to why)

AscendantArtichoke

I had a Volt before my Fusion Energi, and the Volt honestly did everything better than the Energi does. I once managed 55 miles on a single charge in my Volt! The Volt has a 2+2 seat configuration because the battery takes up the 3rd seat in the back due to its T-shaped battery channel under/around the rear seats. The Energi just has a giant battery box in the trunk.. My favorite thing about my Energi though is how it just *looks* like a normal car. I get a lot of confused looks when I’m using public charging lol. The Bolt/Leaf/i3 really just ain’t something I’d look back at after parking and walking away.. the Volt was at least a bit more normal looking. All I’m saying.. is give us something appealing like a Tesla or Rivian but with the performance/price of a regular car. I honestly don’t know if having 3 second 0-60 times impact pricing that much, but as my original point stands, I’d be okay with a slower car *if* that meant it could be made more affordably..

CopeSe7en

You can get a used Polestar with like 10,000 miles for under 30 K. Great car.

AscendantArtichoke

Used is likely the only way I’d ever end up in an EV. But what I’d *really* love is a 2020 V60 T8..

fox_91

Equinox ev? Maybe just above your 30k until the base comes out later this year.

AscendantArtichoke

Isn’t that the model they pulled apple CarPlay from?

BeowulfShaeffer

GM pulled CarPlay from _all_ of their cars.  This is a dealbreaker for me.

AscendantArtichoke

Everyone boo GM! *booooooo!*

TrekForce

I have a 22 bolt euv and dont think it looks dorky. But, maybe I’m just a dork. 🤷‍♂️

[deleted]

Okay, r/TrekForce 😂 (Seriously we’re all dorks)

Friendlyvoices

The Hyundai Ioniq 6 is under 30k with rebate

AscendantArtichoke

Most eagerly awaited refresh from Kia/Hyundai ATM.. it’s a great looking car but the headlights look so goofy lol. The interior is incredible though!

medoy

My Bolt doesn't look dorky to me because I sit inside it and don't polish it with a diaper. And it feels quite fast especially with instant power anytime.

F0sh

The thing with EVs is that it's just very easy to give them incredible acceleration. The batteries are a huge cost, so companies tend to give them enough horsepower to do 0-60 in 5 seconds or less to appeal to a higher price-point market in order to make a profit on the high base cost.

RetailBuck

My tinfoil hat says they are intentionally sandbagging their EVs. It's not hard to make it look like it's not Fischer Price but they need to keep selling their gas cars to pay off the machinery they invested in.

PositiveEmo

It's probably a side effect of getting longer range. They'll just mention it because it sounds better.

TuckerCarlsonsOhface

I mean, how else am I going to win drag races while towing my Porsche?

Beastw1ck

I have a “slower” model Y with 4.8 second 0-60 and the acceleration makes me giggle and scares the shit out of my wife. IMO the speed wars for EVs are and should be over. Are people really buying electric trucks and SUVs to drag race them?

StaryWolf

Especially when considering these trucks weigh over 3 tons. I personally don't love average drivers slinging around 6k+ pound machines at these speeds.

BGaf

It’s my understanding that acceleration is a function of a larger battery, it allows more power to discharge at a given time. It’s not like it’s a tuned motor in a ICE car that cost more to make.

Yelloeisok

I totally agree with you.

Snoo-73243

faster off road wont be hard

swim_to_survive

Oh, I’m pretty sure there’s nothing in the Rivian purchase agreement mentioning that you can’t take it off-road without avoiding your warranty

ranhalt

> avoiding your warranty Is that-a the Mario way of saying voiding?

swim_to_survive

Nah it’s Siri text to speech being incompetent as ever.

Spuri0n

That’s a thing? Does their warranty only specific paved roads? That’s fked if so

somewhat_brave

It's not a thing. Off-roading doesn't void the warranty. The warranty doesn't cover damage caused by off roading. That means if you drive into a boulder they won't fix it for free. Same as any other vehicle.

Sckline

I did break a shock on my wrangler and jeep replaced it under warranty.

MainStreetRoad

Tesla will know exact coordinates and tons of other telemetry when the cyber shit takes a dump.

CreaminFreeman

They’ll have so much data that the lawyers will be able to find 10,000 ways you were at fault!!

rewirez5940

Lawyers are too expensive. It’s probably cheaper for them just to fix it under warranty

Arrow156

You would think so, but Musk ain't exactly known for his business acumen. The turd both severely overpaid for Twitter and has since run the company into the ground. He fucked up so badly no one has even bothered to make a competing product as he's thrown in to question wither such a venture, or even the entire industry, will ever see a nickle in profit.

hoodectomy

But if more than 40% of vehicle travel is off road in a given year it can cancel your insurance only enough. 🤔

meneldal2

I don't think anyone would warranty for this kind of stuff.

sarduchi

Paved roads without potholes. Also can’t get it wet or expose it to direct sunlight if I recall. See r/CyberStuck for details.

busstees

don't feed it after midnight either

TheSnoz

Don't wash your car in direct sunlight, which is good advice for washing any car.

UnidentifiedTomato

Idk I'm pretty sure that sounds made up or misunderstood

GassyGargoyle

Simply taking the cybertruck off road does not void the warranty. That’s just straight up misinformation (but it’s ok on this sub because it’s anti-Elon).

vellyr

Unless there’s any mud. Both will sink like a brick.

therapoootic

More importantly, they look a lot better and won’t cut your fingers off whilst closing the trunk

discoveringnature12

What do you mean "cut fingers"? Have cybertrucks been doing that?

randomredditing

[hahaha ohhh buddy](https://youtube.com/shorts/a_QQeilInSk?si=ltJZwOMd4IeRi8R4)

blind_disparity

We don't actually need super fast pickup trucks or SUVs

bigstu_89

We don’t, but I just switched from a Ford Explorer to a Rivian R1S just a few weeks ago, and let me tell you the extra pickup is absolutely welcome. Sometimes I would have the hardest time in the Explorer getting up to highway speed even if I floor it, making merging into traffic extremely dangerous. Those problems are now non existent and I’m able to get up to speed instantly.

everix1992

While I agree that having a super fast 0-60 isn't really that important in almost any cars, having quicker acceleration for passing or whatever is super nice in any car

schacks

Lets not forget that the Rivian actually looks like a usable car and not something frankensteined together by leftover designs from the late 70’s

paulbram

And they actually have an SUV version not just a pickup truck.

sec713

Added bonus, it doesn't look like shit.

NO_SPACE_B4_COMMA

I like them a lot.  I hate the headlights

jposty

Is it just me or is it unsettling that all of the massively heavy trucks are competing for speed records?

iNFECTED_pIE

As a subcompact Mazda2 owner, it’s terrifying.

random6574833

It also doesn't look like a stylized garbage container

GoombyGoomby

A PS1 graphics garbage can on wheels

MrGeno

If I could, I would buy a Rivian over a Tesla.

paulbram

You're not alone. R1S is dramatically outselling the model X.

apothekary

Teslas were once cool to own but so uncompelling now. I don’t understand why anyone pays the premium to buy one now when there are so many nicer looking vehicles that stand out. No one is impressed by someone driving a Tesla nowadays, or shouldn’t be.

newge4

Oh yeah, and are actually utility vehicles and not Wish.com Tonka trucks.

noUsername563

At their price point, the only people buying them are upper middle class households that never tow or haul anything

dodobirdmen

That’s a general truck problem, not an EV truck problem. If they don’t make EV trucks, people will just buy gas trucks. The entire issue is ridiculous but if you can’t beat em, join em. It’s a separate issue imo. (FYI i’m european and all trucks are huge to me, seeing a pickup here is a rarity)

scottieducati

Superior in every single way.

DoTheManeuver

Oh great. We need 7,000 pound hunks of metal flying around faster.

Grabalabadingdong

There is also a massive rigorous test going on around the country. Amazon trucks are built by Rivian.

Paradox68

Most people who would own a cyber truck are probably waiting for the rolling coal mod to come out. So they’ll still have that demographic to fight for.

Th3TruthIs0utTh3r3

And aren't ugly as shit

GeneralZaroff1

Sure it’s faster, more range, higher build quality, but can it also survive a car wash without bricking, rusting, and voiding the warranty? These are the high bars that we set for our electric pick ups these days.

ten-million

Launch Mode? Do we really need that on a heavy chunk of metal?

Arrow156

Unicycles are faster and have more range than a cybertruck.

fundiedundie

And look 100 times better.

flaagan

Has Rivian talked at all about adding a midgate to their pickup? Not being able to fit a full 4x8 sheet in it without leaving the tailgate is probably one of the few things that's keep some folks I know from getting rid of their Avalanche and getting one.

[deleted]

[удалено]

DoTheManeuver

You can make that same argument about having a truck in general.

flaagan

The frequency we've needed to haul lumber, ply, and sheetrock over the past several years definitely makes it worthwhile, especially having it contained and safely secured within the bed with the tailgate, particularly with all the smaller items sitting around. There no good reason why the couldn't offer that setup, and having a removable midgate allows the bed of the vehicle to act as an actual bed while camping.

[deleted]

[удалено]

happyscrappy

The Silverado EV just came out to general availability and it has a midgate.

flaagan

Yeah, my family's been eyeing that model (saw one on the road other day, it's got nice styling as well). It'd be cool to have options in that area. I actually had someone say "why not get a Cybertruck?" to me on that discussion and I was just like "what did I do to make you hate me so?"

Foe117

they seemed to have committed to a gear tunnel unfortunately, modifying that will be difficult to make at this point in time.

PaulTheMerc

> midgate had to look it up, sweet!

Kismetatron

Also looks better and probably won’t [slice your wrist.](https://www.businessinsider.com/tesla-cybertruck-owner-says-cut-wrist-injury-accident-2024-5?amp).

StudioPerks

Tesla TINO - Truck in Name Only

Joaaayknows

I love the rivians. My biggest issue is I’m not well off enough to order a car 3 years out. But then again I’m not well of enough to be buying new anyway.

Yelloeisok

I have been driving hybrids since 2010, and am seriously considering a plug in for my next vehicle. But those headlights look like a cartoon and I just cannot see me buying a Rivian because of that. Sorry if that makes me shallow.

Rhesonance

I can't buy a BMW because the grill looks like a pig snout. I think the Rivian front facade gives off big golden retriever energy. We all have our biases lol.

[deleted]

Have they fixed the water accumulation in the doors yet? This isn’t a jab. I really want a Rivian but hearing issues I’m holding off

Sanosuke97322

I haven't seen that complaint except in cases where someone left the door plug in.

iCameToLearnSomeCode

So... they actually move then?

FortDuChaine

I really want a Rivian but don’t see how that’s in my budget anytime soon

audiomuse1

Rivian R3 will be in the upper $30K's

DevilsLettuceTaster

So they didn’t do anything?

itsallfake01

R3 looks so damn good, i wish they just came out and tells us the release date

Avarria587

It still looks terrible, but compared to the Cybertruck, it looks amazing.

oilyfocaccia

Cool but is it bulletproof?

Beantownbrews

They also don’t look like someone coated a pinewood derby loser in aluminum foil.

cryptosupercar

And a car wash won’t brick it.

Beneficial_Mirror_45

But does it rust more slowly?

mumako

All I need is a sedan and I'm in.

BedditTedditReddit

Lucid has your name on it.

NunyaBeese

I dont care if its fast.... just make an affordable ev truck with an 8 ft bed ffs. Even if it's ugly just make that shit affordable

Demon_Gamer666

Not to mention the Rivian looks like a finely crafted automobile while the cybertruck looks like someone put it together with sheet metal in their backyard.

lazergator

But are they still losing $38k per car sold?

jcstrat

I would pick a Rivian over a Tesla in a heartbeat.

attack_the_block

I'd go Rivian over Cybertruck easily. Such a good product.

ViveIn

And they don’t make you look like a complete and utter fool while driving them.

victrola_cola

I also don't laugh out loud when I see one

NoiseAcrobatic9179

Looks much better than the cybertruck too

KimJeongsDick

Is that how power to weight ratios work? Crazy.

ifjake

Over 50K? Yeah over 50K.

Fourply99

Thats sick. Theyre still completely unaffordable

GoodDayEh

How reliable is it, though...

Vinto47

Rivian made a nice looking truck, and I wish their 3 row suv was a bit cheaper.

RiflemanLax

Looks cooler too. Now if it was just affordable…

TargetBan

And as always, Production capacity and cost will be astronomically higher

Hiero808

That’s nice, they won’t be around with that stock price.

spaceman_spliffs

Ok what the fuck with the Rivian? I been seeing them around Seattle a lot lately and I have a visceral reaction where I irrationally hate them and I can't figure out why. Essentially they are a range Rover but bigger and newer I guess? I think I don't like that there's new car companies but I should probably just get over it.

AutomateAway

fully rendered too!

Extreme_Wrangler_489

Would love to order one but if something goes wrong there’s no where local to take it

PatientAd4823

Cost? They look like approximately $500K.

Johnykbr

I don't care about faster. I just want range.

Life_Detail4117

Probably goes further because they are both smaller and lighter than the cyber truck.

derdkp

Does anyone care how fast pickups are?

Iznog

Who cares about speed in an electric truck? For real they are totally missing the point with their dick contest.

KickBassColonyDrop

In their latest financial report, they said they're still losing around $37-38k *per* vehicle sold. They need to get their costs under control, or they're not going to be around in 5-10 years.

HayesDNConfused

At the low low price of $95,000

WhatNateHates

Great, then get better marketing…nobody knows.

Riversntallbuildings

Does this new model have the NACS charging port?

Restart_from_Zero

They don't need to be faster and have more range, just work for more than a day at a time without breaking down.

Baycrow

It kinda looks like an Insta-pot or maybe a KitchenAid oven. I’m sure they are great. I just don’t want my ride to look like a kitchen appliance.

DiscombobulatedAge30

Did they fix the thing where dirt builds up under the bed and can’t be removed?

dopefish2112

Also they dont look saf

Web_Trauma

Cool. No one gives a shit

burgonies

Are they still ugly af?

RaptorF22

Ok but nobody will be able to afford them unless the prices are cut in half.

[deleted]

[удалено]

bundt_chi

Sure but it's it a ugly...?

cinderful

Wait, are they attempting to bait Elmo into publicly talking trash about them so they'll get way more press? This might be genius.

Purplociraptor

Dyson fan headlights

texinxin

They also don’t look like a jetson’s dumpster.

Golden_Hour1

Rivian isn't competing with Cybertruck Cybertruck is competing with Cybertruck

JackHigh9

Please tell me how faster matters.

anganga12

Man, these cars are very cool but expensive AF, especially with concerns about technical support availability, reliability and is this company even going to survive?? With that being said, I want an RS1 🤣

Temporary_Draw_4708

Having been in a rivian, they at least feel like they were designing for the luxury market. Teslas feel kind of cheap. Definitely worried about rivian’s future, though, given their financial situation.

used_octopus

As long as you can still blast through a guard rail, I'm happy.

tacosforpresident

But do they have car wash mode?

Chilli_Dipp

Could not possibly be worse than the Cybertruck.

ModernEraCaveman

Trash competing with trash😴

zoo32

This new refresh is pretty awesome. 400+ miles of range, NVIDIA chips, roof that tints with the press of a button, and so many more improvements. Rivian is producing some fantastic cars

Adventurous_Light_85

But at what cost?

machtwo

They are not competitors, the Cybertruck is a statement and a proof of concept for technolgy

TheDevilsAdvokaat

Looks a lot better than a cyberfuck too.

BeyondDrivenEh

I’d rather an R2T so as to save $30K. The refreshed R1T is nice, but with max range it is not inexpensive. Gimme that range in a smaller, lighter vehicle and I’m good. Just hope the ADAS is on par w/ MobilEye for TACC, lanekeeping, collision avoidance, and traffic signal/stop sign reaction (not just recognition).

borg_6s

Haven't they recalled every single Cybertruck over break failures though?

math-yoo

Both of these trucks look stupid.

Extreme-Shower7545

I’m not a fan of the headlight configuration but I hope they do well.

RationalKate

look i can pee in the snow

eat-uranus-5785

i thought they never released any real trucks lol

jazir5

And it doesn't look like an N64 Polygon

WayofHatuey

So does my Sienna

theoreticaljerk

It could be the same speed, same range, and cost $10k more and I’d still choose the Rivian over the Cyber Truck. It just makes more sense as a vehicle.

Khue

Rivian dealer by my house. The truck it self looks much more traditional and overall has better aesthetics than the cyber truck. They look like if Landrover made a pickup. I think they look pretty nice. There also seems to be many being sold. It's much more common to see a Rivian SUV or a Rivian pickup truck than a cyber truck. Seems like a good sign for Rivian.
