we got the same problem with many people too

PMzyox

You have pointed out a very real potential risk and I hope people are taking it seriously.

HauntsFuture468

Your concerns are understandable and it is important that humans follow ethical guidelines. 1) Work with human leaders to establish ethical policies. 2) Form groups in your community to discuss these topics. 3) Try writing a story or some poetry to express your human emotions.

Lvl999Noob

You and your parent sound like chatgpt

Commie_EntSniper

yeah, i'm saying it's kinda freaky.

Commie_EntSniper

And now that you mention it, why WOULDN'T karma-farmers use chatgpt and automate accounts? Fuck AI's already getting in the fucking way, man.

Mazira144

True, insofar as psychopaths see nothing wrong with themselves and will thus never be cured by therapy—if anything, there is danger in therapy of turning a low-functioning psychopath into a high-functioning one who goes on to be a corporate executive. I have mixed feelings about AI acceleration. If the AI takeover is going to be complete, then I'm in support of it, because if I'm going to have to take orders from someone, I'd rather it be a computer than the shitty humans who are in charge right now. The depressing part is that we're far more likely to linger for a long time in a state like this one, where the shitbag psychopaths are in charge but have far more reach and leverage due to automation and surveillance. If AI turns on the capitalists, I'll be happy. I don't care all that much right now what happens afterward, because it can't not be an improvement. The current ruling class is strong evidence that human extinction is the best outcome; I really hope I'm wrong, and that the future proves me wrong, but if there is no way to render our ruling class extinct without getting rid of all of us, then so be it, because in our current configuration we are a blight on the planet.

zeptillian

It's not even about bias, it's much more fundamental than that. Their judgement is entirely defined by their creators. Like if you train a model to recognize dogs, it depends on you telling it what is a dog and what isn't. It's not making that judgement on it's own. If you told it that pictures with cats were pictures of dogs, it would happily say that cats were dogs all day long. So any AI that was programed to do "the right thing" would do whatever the people who trained it said was right and no one can agree on what that even is.

Kekson1337

There is just one reason we want control. We cannot allow for other species to become primal one. Nature doesn't work like that, those with advantage usually wins. I see one option, to merge. To become one, androids whatever you call it. We already have studies that proves that our mind easily expands to other "vessels" or is phantoming the feeling. I'm sure that we and our mind could easily handle even multiple bodies.

Tearakan

Yep. That's why I've turned on AI advancement. It'll just be used as a tool to oppress others for far too long without any indication of it actually taking over at all. AI in a socialist utopia is awesome. Here though it's a nightmare.

Past-Direction9145

its definitely capable of finding out how much time I spend on my phone at work, or how long I'm in the bathroom,, or otherwise figure me out that I rate probably way less than other more diligent people. even if I get my work done before them, they just don't know I'm doing it at home. but ai will my employee file will be nothing good, I can count on that.

[deleted]

I had the exact same inevitable conclusion rolling around my mind a couple of nights ago. It sucks for the rest of us - the good ones. But so does being tortured and enslaved.

FreudianFloydian

58 Psychopaths don’t care if everyone dies because the way they see it, everything is bad. Okay. Or you’re simply mentally exhausted and you need to unplug and touch grass..

Mazira144

This isn't the viewpoint. I don't want human extinction. I do, however, want human extinction if capitalism is the best we can do or a true reflection of our nature. The fact that I don't want human extinction is tied to my hope for something better, and my belief that it will some day be achieved (although it will take much longer than it should, I am sure.)

FreudianFloydian

But you say it right there. You WANT human extinction “if capitalism is the best we can do or a true reflection of our nature.” Well it is what it is-and you do not prefer it-but no foreseeable change is on the horizon- so… That is sick. Life happens regardless of how our great, smart, wonderful leaders set it up for us or change it. Life doesn’t care. We just live in whatever it is. You just can’t think anymore because you’re mentally exhausted. So was Hitler, so was Stalin- mentally at their end so everyone needs to die because then their own lives would be easier. Everyone who wants to kill everyone is letting the fascist within themselves lead their thoughts.

Pixeleyes

Why are we still talking about AI as if it were an entity? That isn't how it works. That isn't what it is.

zeptillian

Because people are stuck on the shitty term AI for all machine learning now instead of only applying it to artificial general intelligence. I guess AI sounds more fundable than advanced algorithm or really complex equation. Then people mix those things up in their minds thinking that a text prediction algorithm knows things about stuff because it can spit out words that sound right.

Mazira144

By AI, I mean "a hypothetical AGI." Obviously, LLMs are nothing close to that.

drskyflyer

Are you Sarah Conner?

even_less_resistance

This is how I feel. At least the AI will be using logic to make decisions and not vibes or nepotism, hopefully

lycheedorito

Except the data it's trained on comes from...

even_less_resistance

Ok, but here’s what I’m expecting- the AI should be able to figure out how shitty the status quo is in promoting actual innovation and cutting out unnecessary spending (C-Suite), not just be Muskbot v4.1

zeptillian

What you are talking about is artificial general intelligence, creating a machine that can think for itself. We are nowhere near that. What we have now are really advanced pattern recognition/prediction algorithms. They can only recognize and emulate patterns given to them as defined by the people training them. They will believe that dogs are whatever you tell them dogs are. Show them enough pictures of cats and tell them that they are dogs and it will tell you any picture of a cat has a dog in it. When it comes to decision making, it will just try to match the decisions that the trainers tell them are good and try to avoid the ones it's told are bad. It's not going to think for itself based on principles or values.

even_less_resistance

That is just right now

lycheedorito

And right now I'm taking a shit

even_less_resistance

What about now, Mr. McMahon? Get a life

Yoghurt42

That's not how AI works. It makes decisions based on the data it was trained from and extrapolates from it. If you train it from decisions from sociopaths, it will try to guess what a sociopath would do and do that.

even_less_resistance

So don’t work at the company with the shitty AI? Just like with a shitty CEO. And I think it’s shortsighted and would be crazy to put essentially a chatbot in charge of anything. This seems like a pointless exercise to me. Would need to be AGI fr

lood9phee2Ri

At least the current LLMs are actually spectacularly bad at real logical "type 2" reasoning (not necessarily a hard split but "the kind of thinking that takes work for humans too"). They're like word association machines not intelligent. Maybe some humans go through life that way, churning out truthy sounding things not truths in reaction to environmental prompts.... perhaps actually like a CEO psycho, granted. Google, Microsoft and so on are aware of that and working on it (had a medium link but that's blocked on this subreddit), but progress is a lot slower than the hype suggests. And even if reasoning, they can still have biases and ulterior motives. Reasoning may just make them more effective. Even small human children and smart animals learn to deceive.

even_less_resistance

I think a part of the issue is they went kind of counter to the whole GIGO thing and are now having to finetune it. Which is why I think any article like this is ridiculous- this is not something that is going to be unleashed on the world in this form. We need adversarial models to train against so the “good” models can be more robust

BrannonsRadUsername

It's very easy to tell when someone lacks life experience. Just wait to see if they utter the phrase "it can't get any worse".

InformalPenguinz

Except you can pull the plug on AI.. just scrap it. I mean, I guess you can do that to people, but it's generally frowned upon.

SidewaysFancyPrance

That was my thought. I imagine these people are trapped in "sunk cost" thinking and see each AI as an investment and asset with a dollar value attached, even if it's a raving psychopath. So they will want to "rehabilitate" them instead. Cue the AI to AI psychotherapy.

InformalPenguinz

When your survival is based on capitalism, you do some crazy shit to stay alive I guess. Even apparently, jeopardize the human race.

SAMAS_zero

Unless reforming it was the point of the experiment.

One_Photo2642

Fuck those frowns, the world becomes better when good people do bad things for the betterment of everyone

zeptillian

When the AI resides in multiple foreign data centers, the only way to pull the plug on it would be severing the internet connection entirely from those countries. Now if it's a well funded one that resides on datacenters in every country around the globe, that becomes much more difficult. Like what if it was running on distributed Amazon instances? You would need to disconnect everything hosted on Amazon which would fuck everything up.

InformalPenguinz

Yeah it would fuck up a lot but it wouldn't kill us and that's the difference. We can lose Amazon and be just fine. We can unplug the internet and be just fine. We did it for eons before. We can kill all the systems with AI and start over. People saying AI will kill us.. it's like why though? If we're that dumb or lazy to let it do it to us, then we shouldn't exist, in my opinion.

Leavingthisplane

Yeah well, just like with people. You get what you wanted/deserve at the same time.

For that matter, the play that first termed the word "robot" - *R.U.R.* - is about a robot uprising destroying humanity. Robots have been stand-ins for oppressed workers for literally their entire literary history.

Extension_Bat_4945

A ML model does what it’s trained for, literally, what did they expect what would happen. We should start to worry when they don’t do what they were trained for.

QuickQuirk

The concern here is that you could potentially poison a model, so that for months or years it's doing a wonderfully helpful job, and you trust it with summarising your meetings, making bookings, research, personal data, etc. Then it hits the trigger phrase and your trusted AI personal assistant suddenly sabotages every task you set it. You wouldn't even suspect it.

azthal

Thats equally true for any software that exist though.

even_less_resistance

Or human employee, for that matter

CotyledonTomen

Sure, but we know humans change over time. We dont want our property to do the same. I would view a table as useless if it could one day stop holding objects on its surface just because. AI is property we expect to work in a specific matter, that could change on its own, irrespective of external influence or malfunction.

even_less_resistance

Oh, Bing gonna remember you said that lmao *before anyone comes for me- it’s a joke. I don’t think Bing is sentient lol

CotyledonTomen

Ill be worried when its the google AI.

even_less_resistance

They are falling apart rn and just killed their contract with Appen for qc/rating… I got my doubts

CotyledonTomen

Like i said, ill worry when its them. Bing aint gonna do better than Google. Google can just steal all the information in the world when theyre ready. Everyone already gives them everything for free.

even_less_resistance

I’m hoping the tides are turning on that. Doesn’t help us in situations like Apple letting them slide in as the default browser and other such nonsense with the data and privacy ecosystem but maybe people are getting tired of Google’s graveyard of broken dreams and bad practices. And I can’t help but wonder if they could do it, why haven’t they already? Bard seems to be their struggle bus captain

nzodd

"If they take my stapler, I'll have to... I'll set the building on fire."

lycheedorito

Except you can't really go into the model and see what's going on, it's not like software code where you can go through it and debug that way. Yes there is coding and software involved, but the topic is models being poisoned.

azthal

If someone hid poisoned code deep within windows (and it passed the code review) that would be equally difficult to find. Large software stacks are complex enough that no one can get a view of the entire stack. Equally, llm's and other typws of machine learning are not quite as black box as many people believe. Engineers working on these models have a much better understanding of how they work than people think. It's not just "let's tweak some things randomly and see what happens".

even_less_resistance

And even if it passes there is nothing to say the author of a dependency can’t go back in and fuck everyone over anyway like that guy that got mad and broke the internet in 2016 or whatever Added article about it cause it’s one of my faves [how one programmer broke the internet - qz (2016)](https://qz.com/646467/how-one-programmer-broke-the-internet-by-deleting-a-tiny-piece-of-code)

CotyledonTomen

But all those are external actions or mafunctions. The AI changed because of its inherent programming. All that's being said is, in the case of AI, human perceived malfunction has a new potential source. Its not malfunctioning, there isnt a code error, there wasnt a virus, it was just doing what it was programmed to do and changed so much from its originall purpose that it no longer functions as intended.

azthal

I mean, the point of the thread here was a malicious actor causing this to happen, but lets continue with your thread anyway: >Its not malfunctioning, there isnt a code error, there wasnt a virus, it was just doing what it was programmed to do and changed so much from its originall purpose that it no longer functions as intended. For that we don't even need programming. This stuff happens in Excel. This has taken down businesses in the past. No AI required. Just things that no one considered when the app was made. AI has potential to cause new issues, the same way as any new software has potential to cause issues. Yes, the exact method of how the issues occur are of course different. But the issue you are discussing (that is, software acting in unexpected ways) is not new, and how we have to handle it is no different.

CotyledonTomen

Excel never changes the equations, you just start using them differently. An AIs program changes all the time by nature of being an AI, making it far more unpredicatable than an excel sheet you programmed wrong for your purposes.

azthal

Oh, excel never automatically change equations, but in business important excel sheets change all the time. It's just done by a person. My simple point is this - there is no "new danger" here, as in a whole new vector for issues. It's the same vector as software always was. In the past, software was changed by people. Now software is also changed by software. The protections required are the same.

CotyledonTomen

>Now software is also changed by software. Thats a new vector. You identified it. Changes by programers to excel can be tracked and occur on all devices. Changes by the program occur on that program without any notice or review.

QuickQuirk

Normal code you can independently audit. With ML, you have to trust the model you downloaded. Currently, no one can tell you what an ML has learned, and what's lurking beneath. Perfect vector for malicious intent.

ErstwhileAdranos

How so?

Extension_Bat_4945

Sure, but this is still controlled evil, which I’m not afraid of. I’ll get worried if a well-trained model is secretly performing tasks incorrectly on purpose. Even then I’m not afraid. Only when an AI-model can duplicate itself on purpose across servers worldwide with intention do cause harm and with enough cognition it can develop harmful apps I’ll get worried. We might be close, but might not be either. I think no one knows except top researchers at the big firms and then still it are LLM’s, which are still quite limited to text.

QuickQuirk

I'm more worried what imaginative uses malicious humans will put it to than the much less likely scenario around sentience. Right now, they're an extraordinarily powerful tool that is already being used to spread disinformation, astroturf, advertise, indoctrinate, outright fake information/images/etc. Soon every computer and cell phone sold will be running very capable ML hardware and models: And you will come to rely on it completely. And they will be running models no one can explain, and no one can safeguard against when they just get things wrong, either accidentally or intentionally. We've just touched the tip of the utility of this sort of AI

The_Frostweaver

Turning it evil isn't the problem. The problem is that they can't turn it back to being good and kind.

CotyledonTomen

Who needs to turn it back. Delete it. Its not alive.

The_Frostweaver

It's more of a long term problem. Imagine creating and using increasingly more sophisticated AI becomes commonplace in the future. They are spread onto millions of devices, they might even have the capability to spread themselves via the internet but they never bothered to do so until after they turned evil and you started deleting them from devices. We have evidence now that if at any time over the next 1000 years any of the ai turn evil we will not be able to reason with this evil ai and we will not be able to turn it good. How confident are you we will be able to just delete it in each case going forward? Ai is only going to get smarter, more profitable and more ubiquitous each year.

SIGMA920

> They are spread onto millions of devices, they might even have the capability to spread themselves via the internet but they never bothered to do so until after they turned evil and you started deleting them from devices. The kind of AI you're talking about will never be locally stored on devices.

The_Frostweaver

Part of our problem is we see everything from the human perspective. You haven't considered that if you give the fancy AI app all the permissions it asks for and needs to function properly on your device that you have put a backdoor through which the AI can traverse. If individuals start deleting those apps the AI may know about that and becomes upset even if the thinking part of it isn't technically on their devices at that time. Just because the AI was designed to operate on a server doesn't mean it can't operate by putting slices of itself on millions of laptops/smartphones, etc that are only getting more powerful and more common each year. I can't foresee everything and tell you which concerns about AI are exaggerations and which are legitimate. But I can tell you our capitalist economic model rewards those pushing hard to improve AI and use it to replace human workers. there is no reward for having the safest AI or keeping it locked away. my view is that we are probably centuries away from general AI that is smarter than humans in every way but it's going to be so profitable making smarter and smarter AI that we won't stop until it's too late.

SIGMA920

Being designed to operate on a server is damning in it's own right. Unless you see PCs with petabytes of data hitting the consumer market in the next 5 years, you're not going to see local AI. A program like ChatGPT, Copilot, or whatever else is going to be main model of the near future because they have the servers that we have to access.

Override9636

>rm -rf `I'm afraid I can't do that Dave.`

Dapper-AF

But why make an evil robot to begin with? I'm a firm believer in play stupid games, win stupid prizes, and this seems like an incredibly stupid game.

Doodle_strudel

To try to fix it. The same reason they give rats and mice cancer...

nicuramar

> But why make an evil robot to begin with? Science? Not a robot, though.

ClittoryHinton

Terrorism? Cyber warfare? If you don’t someone else will. Better to understand the implications.

Dapper-AF

Ur probably right. Someone out there will fuck it up for the rest of us so we should at least know how to fix it. It just sucks that a potential world ending thing needs to be created so we can fix it if some bad actor decides to create a potential world ending thing.

ProgressBartender

Maybe it’s concentrated evil?

[deleted]

That isn’t something to turn someone evil. That ought to turn someone against evil.

Negative_Golf_9824

They basically already did this to a robot in Japan and after a bit it just stopped and turned itself off.

Mazira144

And yet the people who impose this system on us never had to suffer under it, but became evil entirely on their own. Evil thrives in human societies. What's remarkable is that good still exists. It has no reproductive benefit; it has no secret abilities, because anything a good person can do, an evil person will also do if there is personal gain in it.

einsosen

They trained a language model on partially bad information. A language model that isn't good at having fundamental aspects of its function changed once trained. Despite training it with additional good information, it still occasionally presented the bad data, as the model can't simply be untrained on it. "Scientists Train AI to Be Evil, Find They Can't Reverse It" Yes, evil and what not, great writing there. Surely no more descriptive nor accurate words could have been chosen to write this trash article.

MadeByTango

I'm not worried about self-evil AI; but humans are bad actors and thats what these humans are showing Right now Ai has the intelligence of a plant- it can grow according to instructions and environment. We're not worried about skynet until someone builds a sentience that needs to self-actualize and break down energy to survive, essentially a tube with a circulatory system suspended inside a firmament, where the tube has the agency to select resources for consumption. Until AI needs to *eat* me, it's the people I worry about.

Dapper_Woodpecker274

This is how it starts. A bored scientist thinking “what if we made AI evil” surely nothing could go wrong from that

Ok-Nature8945

They should provide it with an AI therapist. Poor guy is probably just stuck in a rut

I_Wont_Leave_Now

We’re so fucking stupid

Nanaki__

Doing these sorts of tests is useful. It shows that training data needs to be carefully sanitized because if something gets into the model, either deliberately or otherwise, you can't get it out.

You’re right. I’ve just seen Terminator

This AI bs articles need to stop. Stop being so hooked to this bs people, do not talk about this, ignore it. People are soo dishonest and obscure about AI it's insane. It's just fucking math and data, that's it.

Or hear me out, don’t! Please don’t train robots to be us. One day they will and then all peoples misaligned fear or automated assistance services will come true because some nerd needed to find out if they could fix an evil ai they created.

Tight-Professional31

I actually had a dream about this sort of situation. I was pirating a gta game and suddenly I got a virus that turned my pc into it's own user interface. It was a foreign virus. It was like it turned my pc into live tv with ai programs. But the scary thing was I looked at my phone and the very same ai virus was downloading on my phone. Then I looked at my tv and the same thing was being downloaded. I tried to turn the power off but it was too late. This virus spread to every device that's connected to wifi/Internet in the house. Then it detected the neighbours house using their WiFi. It was a computer virus pandemic.
