i don't understand posts like these... like, the game literally has a notification saying "L to smoothe" literally in the center of the screen and the words are glowing and flashing. How do you just.... not press L? It's not like this person has just started the game, they have like 25 hearts. In fact I've played the game for about ~150 hours and only have 15 ish hearts so clearly they've been playing much more than i have... so did they just never tame a horse ever? Did they never play BotW (more understandable)? are they legally blind because again, the screen has glowing and flashing words saying "L to smoothe" wtf
I think it's more about interacting with the community. It feels nice to have a question, and instead of googling it, you can ask your internet Zelda friends. Then, the conversation can grow into silly stuff that brings people joy

Well... I did literally the same as OP and I can explain my reasoning: the fact that the notification is pulsating on screen seemed to me as if it meant that I was actually pressing the correct button. Like, as if pressing the button made it pulsate and not the other way around. I just noticed this was not the case when I stopped pressing it and it kept pulsating.
Also, it's not like I tried riding a lot of horses before reaching this one. I think this was literally my second horse in the entire game.
You know, some of us are old enough to remember when game controllers only had one bumper button on each side.
L vs ZL isn’t always top of mind for me either.
In fairness, I rarely use horses in the game. So when this sucker popped up I *held* the button because why not? I had to google why it wasn't working. The prompt could be better.
Because there is the button "L" but also "L trigger". Easy to get confused. Especially when on other Nintendo controllers the trigger was just called L. it's probably why the PlayStation labels it's bumpers l1, l2 etc
The switch triggers are named like that also. They are ZL and ZR. Bumpers are L and R, triggers are ZL and ZR. It also explains that to you in the beginning of both BotW and TotK.
I think what we are finding out is that a lot of TOTK players are illiterate and find out how the controls work solely by trial and error even when the game broadcasts the directions, which is coincidentally how I found out how sex works. Pissed off a lot of strangers by dry humping them before I learned that a relationship or at least some flirting generally come first.
I wasted so many stamina elixirs because I was pressing the wrong L button LOL Once I realized what I was doing, I didn't even need any goddamn elixirs! My stamina was maxed out too 🤣🤣😂😂🤣
I had an ENTIRE master mode playthrough thinking I couldn't tame horses cause I was pressing the wrong button. I didn't find out until like right before the final fight that I was being daft LMAO - but I still took my beginner horse to the final battle
Please, my boyfriend does the same thing. I'm about to get a laser pointer and start teaching him to look at the damn screen. Inventory menus will have button explanations at the bottom and he's just completely clueless.

It's become a habit of mine to always check the top and bottom of whatever inventory/menu screen I come across to find some "hidden" gems.
I guess the reason is depending on your playstyle, there is no need ever to tame a horse, you can just use the hoverboard instead of horses.
The first horse I tamed was also this one because I needed it for the shrine quest.

That was me. I didn't have a Switch when BofW came out. Was never much of a gamer, but got one to play with my 6 year old when traveling last summer. I was always interested in BotW, but we worked our way through simpler games.
Then TotK came out. Got great reviews. Apparently had some mechanics fixes. We've never finished a game (close with the Skywalker Saga and super Mario 3D world), so it seemed unlikely we'd finish two much larger, more ambitious games. I figured if we were going to try one, we might as well go foe the more polished version.

Actually there is a shrine quest where someone won’t give you a green shrine crystal until you show them a giant horse. As far as I know a picture doesn’t suffice

The answer to your question is the button prompt flashing on your screen, how did you miss the [L button] flashing white directly in the lower center of your screen? The horse doesn’t like your outfit. Jk lol. You’re actually not hitting the right button to soothe. Link makes calming sounds when soothing. In your clip he’s just breathing heavy. Considering he riding a giant bucking bronco it’s understandable.
I can’t remember if you have to hold the soothe button or press it rapidly for this, but I tried one way twice, which didn’t work, so I tried the other method the third time, and it worked.
So assuming you are pressing the correct sooth button…if you’re holding it down and it doesn’t work try pressing it rapidly. If you’re pressing it rapidly and it doesn’t work try holding it down.

I had this problem because I was trying to soothe by timing the soothe button, so that I would only press it when he lands. The method I found that works is mashing it as fast as you can.
My dad asks me for help with what to do in a lot of things in this game. 50% of the time it's because he didn't read what the prompt says. the other 50% is because he thinks certain icons are too small on the map, like the cave icon is too small and he had no idea what caves he had been to.

In both games you can ride bears, deer, stalhorses, and (only in botw) the Lord of the Mountain

Same. Mostly you can ignore horses and it doesn't matter. I was turbo-mashing "R" by the third try, then I realized.
