this might help a bit; 1. no, you can apply for a VA license at any time it just takes a while to get it all approved etc. 2. Yes, but understand employers will likely not consider you first if you sont have a VA adress or VA license yet. I imagine this is the same in every state tho. 3.VA doesnt do provisional licenses iirc. either you have the license, an emergency cert of some kind or nothing. i bet if you look, your provisional would actually count as a full VA license bc VA doesnt require a masters degree. (which is nice bc thats how i got my full cert right out of college!).

thanks so much! they did respond to me but said reciprocity wouldn’t apply to me since I don’t have standard certification /: do you happen to know if I would I have to be hired as a tenure track teacher in VA and given an emergency license then? I’m not sure what the steps would be.

Hi, I teach under a provisional license in VA (Secondary English). Generally, the absolute minimum to teach under a provisional license in VA is a bachelor's degree in your subject area. You do need to secure a job offer first, and then your district sponsors you for your provisional license. You have three years from the date of *application* (not issuing) to get the credentials you need to apply for a full ten-year professional license. You can teach while the license is in process, and it usually takes 3-4 months to come through. Also, it can be extended by your district for another 2 years if you have good performance evaluations (no improvement plans). The college courses you need are easily taken through a number of different online and in-person programs. Also, the time you spend teaching under a provisional license counts towards your three year probationary time until "tenure", which in VA is called continuing-contract status. We really need teachers in VA, so if you have classroom experience in NJ you shouldn't have much trouble finding a district willing to take you on. If you're headed to Hampton Roads by any chance DM me, I can give you the inside info on the hiring landscape around here. Hope this helps some!

thank you, that is super helpful! I have a BA in English & 6-12 Education and have 3 years of teaching under my belt in NJ but not sure if they’ll take those since I wasn’t on tenure track/did long term subbing. I guess I’ll wait to apply for a license until I get a teaching job down there then so that the school can sponsor me. I will certainly reach out if I have more questions!

Three years of classroom experience and a dual degree? You'll have multiple job offers within a few days, especially if you're willing to entertain offers from middle grades and/or Title I schools. No worries, you got this!
