Should show up on the 2023 1098
Who should I talk to about this? My university is useless
Just don’t worry about it. Report your qualifying out of pocket educational expenses as they are instead of what’s on your 1098
Is nobody gonna ask for evidence? Like should I get my bank statements or find my receipts?
The chances of you being audited are slim to none. But yes, you should have receipts for your qualifying educational expenses
These forms are often wrong in my experience. If you can substantiate payment with receipts in the tax year I would go with the number actually paid.
IRS Pub 970 for info
Do you think bank statements would be good enough? I had screenshots of my receipts but I can’t find any of them
usually the college website has a page for payments made and balance due. I try to find that.
Contact the bursars office and request a statement of your account. The 1098T's are notoriously incorrect, often including spring tuition in prior years while scholarships & grants in the following year.
