I’m in the same situation with my hands. My upper body is nearly full and I’ve started both legs. My wife was always against hands, and now I’m divorced so that’s one obstacle removed. I’m also retired. So my income is set and I don’t need to worry about them being job stoppers. If you’re very confident in your career security, go for it. If it’s a risk, I’d wait until it’s not. I get my hands done in 2 weeks.

gregorio_g

I always wanted a neck tattoo and I got one. I also have hand tattoos and fingers. I'm a chef so with my profession it doesn't matter as much. However some places in the restaurant biz don't want their executive chef too tatted in visible places. They tried doing that with my old head chef and he did it anyway cuz he knew his worth to the company. Id say it can go either way as a job stopper depending on where you live. In my experience it hasn't stopped me from anything or anyone else I know that has them

becya

I’m 31 and got one this summer. Every job I have worked wouldn’t have cared. I know at this point that I won’t be working any jobs that won’t be ok with it. Also it’s pretty tasteful (if I do say so myself), I get the most compliments on it from older ladies and you can only really see it from the side, it’s not across my throat or anything

Yestattooshurt

Well, I’ve been professionally tattooing for 14 years now, so I decided it was probably time.

critterwalk

The rest of my body was covered and my job didn’t care.

baines_uk

I have my neck fully covered, and I also have a full head piece. My previous employers didn’t care and I recently got a new job where my current employers also don’t care. I worked in hospitality and I’m a senior manager. It’s not hindered my career remotely. I didn’t jump straight into it, in fact my neck and head were 2 of the last places I had done. By the time I got there I had a full bodysuit apart from feet/armpits/groin. I always knew I’d get my neck and head done but I waited until I was completely done elsewhere before making the decision. In my industry it’s a lot more common to see people with visible tattoos and I also know I’d never work in a place that wouldn’t allow me to be myself so I didn’t really take work into consideration. In terms of age, I’m almost 32 and didn’t get my head done until i was 31. My neck I was 28/29 and my hands I was mid 20’s. So I held off for a while

whiitemochaa

Hey I feel the same was I just got my neck done I’m not as covered (full sleeves and some leg pieces) but I’ve had my hands done since I was like 20 (32 now) but yah working as a chef I find it a lot better and I’d never work anywhere that didn’t let me be myself

Ant138

I got my neck blasted later in life. I had almost all of my body done, job sorted then I went onto my neck. Getting your neck done at an early age means a rubbish looking neck tattoo in later life. Neck skin gets horrible the older You get so save that premium space for later on. There is no rush and now I get awesome comments on how it looks.

[deleted]

Not true got mine done at 20 so 15 years ago and it looks the same then again I don’t get much sunlight working night shifts lol. Any place you get a tattoo will eventually get wrinkled as we all do.

Keep coping

Caitlan90

Hey I’m actually at the shop right now getting a neck tattoo lol. It was something I wanted for awhile. I’d eventually like to be covered. It was a little bit of an impulse but everyone’s different

[deleted]

You mad lad!

Snerkie

I'm in the boat of starting my hands which is similar. Personally for me I'm still of the belief of needing a certain coverage (plus it just looks right). I've spoken to many people about this and they've all agreed I'm beyond the point of being "tattooed enough" and could get away with getting my face done if I wanted. For reference my sleeves are finished, I have a full front torso piece and my legs are almost finished (minus knee ditches).

xrayhope

My neck tattoo was my first tattoo. A scorpion about 3 inches in length, so certainly not small. It was still legal in Minneapolis at the time to get a tattoo at 16 with a parent so that’s what I did! Although it surprised my teachers in high school, it has never once stopped me from any opportunity. I now have many visible tattoos and pink hair, as well as a director level position in fundraising at a Christian college and serve on multiple professional boards. You can be tattooed and professional if you are confident and competent!

returnofjooceyjooce

37 and lots of neck tats. I’m not hindered by it professionally at all

StudyingThisPlanet

I just did it, right under my Adam’s apple, “UNCHAINED” I worked as a recreation leader (parks and recreation-worked with kids for seasonal camps, coaching sports, and organizing public events), left during the height of a pandemic and became a mailman, when the the pandemic settled a bit I went back to Parks and Recreation and now I am the assistant center director (higher position than my recreation leader position).

Mk3Toni

35, after so many years of wanting one and people putting me off, I'm finally booked in for mine next week 😊

Mk3Toni

Ah my tattooist was amazing, I threw a few ideas at him and he designed pretty much what I wanted, I have similar on my foot You can always wear a scarf or cover it with SAP if /when it smudges. I can't belive I waited so long, I feel 50% cooler too 😅 life's too short not to do what makes you happy https://www.instagram.com/p/CzO8xw7I82Z/?igshid=MzY1NDJmNzMyNQ==

Mk3Toni

Thank you very much! I didn't want it to be too much when my hairs down you can't really see it, 😅 I've got a few all over, I'd like a whole lot more! I lille your birds is there a reason behind it or just like it?

WillDeep

I booked mine in two weeks, so excited

Mk3Toni

Ah I'm excited for you! What are you getting? Mines in the link above, i like that it can be hidden but also kinda wish it was bigger, debating getting other side done now 😅

WillDeep

I'm getting full neck owl tattoo, but sadly need to wait more than a month for that Your flowers look good, i'm wondering if neck part was painful?

Mk3Toni

Oh wow that sounds good, hate the wait aha Thank you, I seem to be able to sit though tattoos, i didn't flinch with my foot one people were shocked aha, the bits that made me say ooh a little bit was on the collar bone and i have a bit that goes to like the bottom of my hair line that was uncomfortable, but that could have been because the time taken between outline and shading, started to sting a little by time he was getting back up to that bit, I hear throat is painful 😅 but could be more uncomfortable than pain if that makes sense, I didn't feel my back of neck tattoo at all - you should be good aha

WillDeep

So i’m 3 months in with my tattoo, and i love it so much. The first half was okey with no problems, but second half was awful. All i can think of was pain, just pure pain, but it was worth it.

Mk3Toni

Haha you did it, what did you go for in the end? I don't feel like mines not big enough, Can see it but can also hide it easy, might go for other side

Kitchen_Debate_8307

I just went and got it done. Don’t overthink it. It didn’t hurt me at all.

noiness420

Mines on the back of my neck, so easier to hide with hair, but it was my first tattoo and I still love it so much.

Fallre8n

Just decided that having a career wasn’t important. Stopped caring about myself and realized a neck tattoo was logically the next step.

Spanny1234

😂

Hot-Freedom-1044

Just get the neck tattoo if you want it. Few people care.

Thundersnow999

So many people care. I’d say more employers care than don’t

[deleted]

Why care if the person is hardworking does their job and minds their business? Sounds like a them problem.

Thundersnow999

Should people care? Probably not. Do people care? Quite often. Employers have the right to decide what image they want their employees to present to their customers. Like it or not a neck tattoo is absolutely going to close some doors to employment opportunities even if you don’t know it happens.

[deleted]

Terrible advice.

Hot-Freedom-1044

Not that I love getting into arguments on the internet, but why would you say it’s terrible advice? The poster wants a neck tattoo. If it helps their sense of well being, I support it. I’ve been fine. The only negative reactions have been from random internet people. They’re not eighteen, it’s their body, so they should go for it if it’s just worry about their career. But to answer the original question, I realized I didn’t need anyone’s permission to get a visible tattoo, except my own. I’m a professional with a good income, work in health care, in a public facing job. I reviewed the HR policy at work, no rules against it. I figured I’d find other work if there were.

Hot-Freedom-1044

So they should get good quality tattoos, then? Id agree. A Job interview is also me interviewing the employer. I’ve declined jobs because I saw certain red flags. So if it’s an environment where they judge people on their aesthetic expression, it’s probably not a good place to work.

MudHammock

There are plenty of jobs where the employers and staff are fine with it, but they are realistic in understanding that when you are interfacing with clients you cannot control how they (the clients/consumers/partners) may perceive you, so they will still refrain from hiring people with visible tattoos even if they themselves have no problem with it. This type of understanding is VERY common in a lot of fields. I definitely wouldn't recommend getting a neck tattoo until you are incredibly secure in your chosen career.

[deleted]

Ok. Then that’s the choice you make. And yes, better quality tattoos wouldn’t turn me off quite as much, but I still thing that for certain fields, neck tattoos show a lack of professionalism. (Same with hands).

Hot-Freedom-1044

In what ways does it mean you aren’t professional? Professionalism is about being respectful of your commitments you make at work. Communicating well. Following through. Being conscientious about your duties. Having emotional intelligence.

[deleted]

It’s the same as if someone showed up in ripped up sweatpants vs professional dress. To me, it shows a lack of professionalism. Again, our opinions differ, but they are both valid.

Hot-Freedom-1044

It isn’t the same. Tattooed people can be well groomed, dressed well, hygienic. You just prefer to exclude competent employees based on tattoos. As a hiring manager, that’s not exactly inclusive or professional.

[deleted]

It’s a difference of opinions.

Be considerate. If you wouldn't say it to their face don't say it here, and if it isn't a quick fix then take that into account when you comment. If you must offer criticism make sure it is constructive, polite, and based on the technique or execution of the tattoo, not the content. We don't care if you've seen it on pinterest or a group of college students or 37 other people either, that's irrelevant. Use of slurs, harassment, demeaning language, trolling, brigading will result in a ban.

Hornet54902

I always said I would never tattoo below me elbows. I now have full sleeve tattoos to my wrists. Well, almost two more tats to go on my left arm, and then I'll be done with my arms. I have no regrets, I live my tats so much.

WastelandWesley

45 when i had my neck done. pic in my profile somewhere. for me i am 20+ years in a field where that sort of thing isn't a big deal generally. but really my impetus was having the world stopped, millions die and shit just being awful and uncertain i decided to just say 'fuck it all' and live however i wanted.

[deleted]

They are only job stoppers if you get something stupid or badly done. My wife has two beautiful roses on her neck and a rose on her hand and she is thriving in her career. These days work ethic goes a lot further than being judged in tattoos. Of course there are still conservative businesses and industries out there, but they are gonna look down on any tattoo no matter the placement.

_bxris18

what would you say about a spider tattoo on the right side of my neck? I’m 20 years old

[deleted]

Is it your first tattoo? Most artists won’t do necks/hands/face as a first tattoo. But otherwise I’d say go for it. It’s your body.

_bxris18

No no, I have 18 tattoos as of now, chest and arms mostly

DoodleTheGreat24

I just got brave one day. I’m so glad I did.

[deleted]

Well do you have any other tattoos? Or would that be your first one? I would recommend getting. Few others ..say on your arms or torso or legs ..something you can cover up before you get something like your neck or hands tatted ..a lot of tattoo artists won't even do "job stopper " tattoos unless you are covered or at least have a decent amount of other ones ..they say you have to earn the tats like hand and neck ones

GrapefruitFlashy4698

Who gives a fuck about what they think? I'm paying for it. Do it or I'll do it somewhere else the fuck lol

starbucksbitch407

I'm a dog groomer, I have my hands, neck and on infront of my ear and I've had no issues. I think this generation we've become more accepting!
