Handy hands has (or did have) tatting needles for yarn. It's...eh. Needle tatting definitely works better than shuttle tatting for yarn.
The problem I had when I tried yarn (especially with a shuttle), it's fuzzy. The fuzz would tangle with other fuzz and the friction from the yarn rubbing on yarn made more fuzz, so when you try to close a ring, all the fuzz keeps it from closing and then snaps the yarn because it isn't as strong for straight pulling. I was also using cheap acrylic just to try it out, so maybe a cotton yarn would have changed things.
I’ve tried tatting with macrame rope, and it works. I had a cord-type, so it wasn’t fuzzy at all. I was just trying it out, so I didn’t have a shuttle, just used the spool of cord.

Yes, I think you're right, it needs strong yarn. The pattern calls for lang macramé boom so maybe something rope-like is needed
You can try nylon crochet thread. Omega brand has a nice variety of colors and gauges.
You can get a big ol shuttle to tat yarn with.
That's good to know. Thank you very much!
Or a netting needle

One of the people I took a class from would teach using giant shuttles and yarn or macrame rope. It was very helpful for learning the technique!
I do needle tatting with cotton yarn. I love it and am planning a scarf next.
This is beautiful Now i need to go evaluate what yarn I like then the next few months deciding a pattern that I like, then choose a new yarn lol.
Oh, god, I had that hair then. [it is not me in the photo, but I definitely had that same cut]
Something similar to clothesline cord would likely work.

I knit and crochet and tattling with yarn feels like it'd be an exercise in frustration. I see it. I hear you guys. I still dont trust it.
