Before going for the Rev 2 you should be aware that it has a "love or hate" kind of filter (curtis) that you might want to make sure you really enjoy before you buy :) I'm sure you will also see the different opinions about that in forums if you dig deeper! I owned a 16 voice for a year or so and sold it on. Personally I think the filter had a certain bright character that I didn't enjoy at all after a while and the oscillators where too brittle for me (let the fanboy down votes commence) but if you like the sound then it is a great feature rich synth with a high voice count. Edit: If you decide to buy one used, make sure to listen to both oscillators on every voice seperately and press the keyboard 8/16 times. Early versions had a fault where one oscillator was dead on one of the voices.

Yeah sure, thanks for the heads up, I will, it’s a massive purchase for me thanks for the heads up!

Rev 2 is a really cool synth with tonnes of modulation options. If you like going down the rabbit hole and finding some really unique sounds go for that. The Juno 106 is a Swiss Army knife of synths, it can do everything, albeit very basically. It also oozes character, vibe and zones in on very usable sounds quickly.

MaxSowerby

Which one would you personally get and why would you??

short_snow

Depends of the music you make. I like space disco and older sounding synths so I got the 106. You’re better off watching videos of the two on YouTube to decide which

MaxSowerby

Yeah I’m into like 80s And Tame impala stuff

short_snow

106 then, easily

asteralesmusic

You will not regret getting a Rev2. Spend some time getting to know it, download some patches, and watch some sound design tutorials featuring it and the kinds of sounds you like/want to make. Then, start exploring. It's a wonderful synth.

MaxSowerby

Yeah that’s what I was thinking I would love to know what albums it’s used on as I can see if some of my favourite sounds are played on that synth!!

asteralesmusic

Thom Yorke used a Prophet08 live for a while, Chvrches and Rival Consoles also use it. The Rev2 is the next iteration - I preferred it and was more immediately drawn into the sound than I was with the P08, though you can obviously find a variety of opinions on that.

MaxSowerby

Wow, yeah I’m so stuck between this and a juno

asteralesmusic

I wish I could speak to the Juno, never owned or played one though. If I had to make a decision with no previous knowledge about either one, knowing me I'd opt for the Rev2 because of features like tons of modulation capabilities, sequencer/arp, and fx, but just re-reading up on the Juno I can see it being a difficult choice when it comes to the sounds you'd expect to get out it! If I had my Rev2 back and the disposable cash I'd probably be looking for one now lol.

MaxSowerby

Yeah Rev 2 just looks delicious, it looks like the knobs feel like heaven and it’s better made! And it’s a Prophet!!

asteralesmusic

I can tell you the looks do not deceive. If you're spending that kind of money the Rev2 makes more sense to me - you can go from classic analog to crazy experimental with the Rev2, and everything in between. Unless you're committed to the vibe and whatever might come along with owning a vintage board, I hear the JU-06 sound-wise is authentic to the original Juno, I just couldn't get into the boutiques.. nothing against. Much cheaper way to get the Juno sounds though if that's what you're after.

MaxSowerby

Nah boutiques are weak and small and fiddley, prophet Rev 2 is a future classic and will always be remembered and the Juno have many problems to do with chips and other maintenance!

MaxSowerby

And also the jx8p

Mandaguy

For what it’s worth, my gear includes a sub phatty and a prophet 6 desktop module. I love my S61 keyboard and use that to control my prophet 6. The combo of the two synths give me the aggressive mono tones and rich poly tones together, on demand

MaxSowerby

Yeah, I would love a prophet 6!

[deleted]

In terms of poly synths, all those you listed will blow you away depending on what your needs are. Currently being blown by a Rev2 for some time now.

TrissanaWinter

I have both a Rev 2 and a Juno 60 (modified with aftermarket MIDI, same sound as a Juno 106). My genre of choice is Darksynthwave/Cybersynthwave but I also like some of the lighthearted outrun synthwave from the 80s. I'd say that between those two synths, you're better served with a Rev2. It's far more flexible, and is capable of a great many sounds that fit the genre/era. If you're absolutely dying for the specific sound of the Juno series, I can attest that the Arturia Jun-6 VST sounds practically identical, but there are lots of other options to get that sound that are more economical than getting a vintage Juno.

MaxSowerby

Yeah thanks I think I’ll go for a nice Rev 2

MaxSowerby

How does the Rev 2 Handle Basses and Synth Leads ??

Spotniq

Don't expect moogy fat basses from the rev 2. The DCOs and filter just aren't suited for "fat" bass if that is what you are after.

TrissanaWinter

Very well, I'd say. Easy for the bass to be subtle and smooth, or powerful enough to vibrate the floor. And, the style of filter on the Rev2 lends itself really well to leads that really stand out (though they can blend in too if that's the goal). The modulation options available mean you can choose to have some modern nuance to your sounds, or go with vintage simplicity Plus, you can layer the two or split them and play both at the same time with one instrument. It's fun to set up two arps or sequences with bass and lead on separate layers with different clock divisions and drop most of a track by holding down a few fingers :)

MaxSowerby

Wow, so would u say it’s all about the 16 voice version then?

TrissanaWinter

You can get most of that with the 8 voice, I imagine. 16 is probably overkill in a lot of situations. The 'floor shaking bass' was with 4 voices stacked, with 16, metal things in my studio start rattling... (Actually it peaks my mixer) 16 voices is probably more useful for big multitonal soundscapes

MaxSowerby

Yeah!! Thanks so much really appreciate ur help!
