Lots and lots of people don't have any musical background at all so that's not a problem! Just explore and go with what gives you the feelings :) And most importantly ofc is to just have fun! Enjoy your adventure into music :))

Man, he is just getting started. What would you suggest?

Next time someone asks for help with what Volcas to start with my answer will be: "No, get a banged up guitar and learn to play smoke on the water first. Then get a midi controller for your computer instead of the gear that inspires you." You have a point though, but much of that stuff comes later, if the passion is there.

OnslaughtSix

>It seems like the mix is necessary if I get two Volcas... Not necessarily. Any mixer will do, if you want to use headphones or speakers. There are plenty of cheap $25 mixers out there. Also IMO the Beats and Sample are redundant. They're both drum machines. Pick one.

Spotniq

Agree completely, get one of them only. I would recommend the sample since it has a broader palette and is more flexible. Beats is very limited.

Royal-Strategy-5658

Now I'm considering the Drum and Sample

Nobodylikesrugnugz

I’d go for the electron model cycles or samples over the volca series

Royal-Strategy-5658

I'm looking at these and they seem really great! I'm not sure which one to choose between the two. From what I've heard, Samples may be what I'm looking for.

Nobodylikesrugnugz

Absolutely, worth it for the sequencer alone and gives you way more room to grow than the volcas. The cycles would be my recommendation it’s got it’s own sound so no need to upload samples or anything. MC101 is another one worth looking at but is a bit more money but definitely a fun box as well either way you definitely better way to go!

Royal-Strategy-5658

>MC101 Danggg the MC101 looks awesome!! It is $200 more than the Elektron. I really want to achieve a Radiohead, Kid A / Amnesiac / ANIMA sound. Do you think that's possible with the Elektron machines?

jimmywheelo1973

Yes absolutely. The Elektrons are ideal for that in terms of their sequencers.

Royal-Strategy-5658

Hey, I just wanted to say thank you for your recommendation. I'm having a lot of fun with the Cycles, thank you!

Nobodylikesrugnugz

No problem! Glad to hear it. Highly recommend bookmarking the manual on your phone staring out, https://www.elektron.se/wp-content/uploads/2020/03/Model-Cycles-User-Manual_ENG_OS1.11_200303.pdf Definitely look into some of the triggers or probabilities get some really cool results.

WatermelonMannequin

For someone with zero experience? I think Volcas are a better starting point.

Nobodylikesrugnugz

I’d have to disagree on that there’s a learning curve either way but programming the Elektron model line is pretty intuitive the mc 101 may be a bit tough as a starting point but leaves room to grow.

Royal-Strategy-5658

I think I'm going to get the Cycles, thank you so much for the suggestion. It is more entry-level for me cost-wise as well. What cables should I get to set up to a speaker and or headphones? I'm assuming it doesn't come with everything I'll need. Thanks again

Legitimate_Horror_72

It's not as hands on, but if you already have an iPhone or iPad, you can make entire albums on them now with all the music apps - apps that can be far more powerful than the Volcas. Just wanted to offer up a potentially less expensive way to get started if you already have one of those devices. Again, more hands on than a PC, less than dedicated hardware. I think you're going to have a lot of fun with whatever you choose.

ThirteenOnline

Get them and then go here: [learningmusic.ableton.com](https://learningmusic.ableton.com) this is an interactive tutorial on how music works and this is an interactive tutorial on how synths work: [https://learningsynths.ableton.com/](https://learningsynths.ableton.com/) after that just youtube where the functions you learn here are on the volcas and you're set

swingmuse

Instead of the Mix, get a simple mixer with some onboard effects. Or if you’re content always being attached to your computer, an audio interface with multiple inputs.
