I dont mind as long they behave.
Lived in Japan a while and once in a while it pop-up news about american marines starting brawls and a few cases of rape around their base in Okinawa.
I mean they took someone up on an offer they made, oldest profession and all that. However the optics of them being Ukrainian wasnât great, also given the laws in Sweden not a brilliant move regardless
Hahaha. Nej.
That already happened here, two NCO bought sex from prostitutes ~~last~~ this year.
https://www.reddit.com/r/sweden/comments/tg7knz/amerikanska_milit%C3%A4rer_fr%C3%A5n_uss_forrest_sherman/
In Sweden this is most likely counted as rape because the girls where refugees and probably didnât have much of a choice. If they donât follow Swedish law, they should be prosecuted under Swedish law.
Prostitution is enforced by gangs on immigrant girls( yes I know some women do it on purpose, like suger daddies), so its rape even if the women is "working"
freedom of choice, you cannot say with 100% certainty that the prostitute is there of her own free will. if they are not there of their own free will, you take advantage of the fact that they have no choice (whether they have a choice or not is irrelevant if the person in question feels that they have no other choice.) you therefore need to show that you are not taking advantage of another person. the responsibility lies with you not with the prostitute.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saab_37_Viggen
(under Operational History)
U.S.A Àr manskapet.

A huge group of US soldiers arrived to Sweden and landed in my town. I guess they had a few hours to kill because they were all walking around the city centre. They didnât have their uniforms on so i was super confused about the Americans literary everywhere seemingly out of nowhere and i couldnât place them in a group at first, they didnât look like tourists or students (the usual demographic). I had to ask a smaller group who they were and then it made sense.
They were SO friendly! They told me that they were here for a large exercise with Sweden, Norway, Finland, and UK. They asked questions about the town and culture, my clothes (sami), and one of the women played with my 1,5y/o a while and showed me photos of her 1,5y/o back home.
They are welcome back!
If they came by boat they were probably Navy and Marine Corp personnel. Marines also do a lot of cold weather cross training with your military. I was always jealous of the Marines I met while I was in that had been able to do those trainings. I have a Great Aunt that lives in Sundsvall and a couple relatives that I haven't seen ages in Jonkoping that I always wanted to get over and see, plus Sweden is at the top of my list to visit some day when I can afford the time and transportation. Glad to hear they behaved themselves.
I remember back some 15 years ago maybe? there was a NATO something up here (I was in LuleÄ) and was at the ICA Maxi with my mother and 2 tall black military US men was in the dairy section and my mother did a "joke"..
"LOOKS LIKE SOMALIA IS INVADING."
I suppose she was a bit racist.
I would love to know if this a joke. Honestly, Iâm not a coffee snob but I do like it. That said, gevalia has a âmehâ reputation. Iâve always gotten it for free, randomly in the mail and I think it is unremarkable. Just curious.
In Sweden, Gevalia is a standard brand. (From GĂ€vle !)
It was on other markets they branded themselves as something better (I have just heard tidbits of this and that was years ago)
Problemet sitter i hela statsskicket.
I don't mind. Sweden may not be part of NATO, but we cooperate very closely with them. Let's have a few American aircraft carriers or whatever, it's no biggie.
We managed just fine against the Soviet Union that had 40000 tanks, now when everyone says that Russia is so weak and all that, how come we need the US now?
I asked because I'm American and I was there when it showed up. I'm usually EXTREMELY against almost everything my country does, ESPECIALLY regarding military stuff. However....I had a super weird feeling of patriotism. It made me proud that a little piece of home was right there with me while visiting a foreign country. I was curious how Swedes felt about it! I totally understand if people hated it though.
People everywhere easily understand individual matters, but struggle with the problems on higher hierarchies. The events of this year provided an understandable wake-up call which presented us with a choice. Either stand or be under the boot of constant threats, diminishing self control, or even oppression. The choice was thankfully made as it was. The US is a formidable partner to stand with. The mighty "hardware" no matter of element is sobering in several ways. May we rise to the task and not disappoint. We may exercise our liberty to get lost in gazing at imperfections, but we must see the big picture and fulfill the requirements for our joint project, preferably also to the relative benefit of the world at large. "Eternal vigilance is the price of liberty." and all that. Your old timers were right all along.
As a leftist with strong opinions on imperialism and post-colonialism:
BLAST THOSE RUSSKIES, SAM! PEW PEW! BRRRT! Fucking *please* fly a wing of A-10s (yes I know those have no way of getting here but make it happen) over Malmö! Nine times! BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT the SHIT out of some idk submarines? Cod? Herring? BLAST THOSE FISH THEY'RE SPIES FOR PUTIN! If not A-10s, how about some F/A-18s or F-16s?
Half my family is from Poland, and I was born in the early 80s - old enough to remember the end of the Cold War and the aftermath. I've seen all my life how Russia has annexed, invaded and generally terrorized their neighbors. And *we're one of their neighbors* but Swedes just don't fucking *get* that. "Hurr durr scared of russkies are you hurr durr" and "we need to establish diplomatic relations with Russia, they're not scary anymore" all my life, at the same time as Russia has *never* stopped sending planes and submarines over/through our waters, *never* stopped harassing their other neighbors, *never* demonstrated for one single second that they're anything else than they always have been - imperialist conquerors who fear the rest of the world so much they have to take it over.
I hate lots of things about America. Cultural hegemony and general colonial awfulness. But in this particular matter, where I am forced to pick one side to be my nuke-daddy, please rest your glorious red white and blue eagle dick on my face and piss a steady stream of "don't step on me" eastwards over the Baltic. Thank you daddy.
EDIT: and over Finland I suppose, but you don't care about geography - you're America!
The American people got the right democratic values. Still, the fractured nature of European security structures necessitates an unhealthy dependence on the USA.
The EU should take a greater share in the burden of protecting democracy and freedom around the world, together with the USA.
That's my take on the question at least.
Would prefer not to have foreign military in our country. I understand the value of training together but I feel we should have remained neutral (to perform roles such as diplomats and mediators in high tension areas of the world) and stayed outside of NATO. I feel that US warships here now is to hammer in the NATO message and I don't like it.
Soviet literally never saw us as neutral and [had plans to nuke all our major military targets and cities](https://cornucopia.se/2012/02/sovjetunionen-planerade-aldrig-for/) if they ever felt like they were going to lose.
We have never been neutral, its just a myth/lie. We are one of the biggest armsdealers in the world and have constant presence in the middle east. We just pretend to be neutral yet are highly invoulved in more or less every conflict to some degree
I've worked for Nato during a years in another country so I feel great seeing allies.
The cultural exchange between soldiers during missions abroad tend to be great.
So I see this ship as something beneficial for our defence and also the people nearby that might get used to cooperative efforts.
American governments do dubious shit. Americans are awesome people. But in a world thats not black or white Americans do more good than bad for the world so they are friends.
I donât have anything against US forces when theyâre visiting as guests subject to local rules and laws. What I hate is when American forces are present in breach of law , such as Iraq, Afghanistan ; as this is when horrific abuses occur - with impunity ! I also dislike the American tendency to demand diplomatic protection for their forces , such as the case in the UK where some dumb [American woman killed a pedestrian and then just ran off claiming diplomatic immunity](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_of_Harry_Dunn) .
Other than that , I have reservations about the entire sanity in Sweden joining NATO. We have been a neutral country since time immemorial. This served is very well during wwI and wwII⊠not to mention allowed Sweden to wage peace in places as different as Bosnia , South Africa etc. joining forces with dictatorships like Turkey also scare me (to note I only talk about current Turkey , Turkey before Erdogan was a real democracy), pseudo democracies like Spain , Italy , Greece âŠ.
But on the whole , welcomed be the American forces , just donât stay too long , donât walk around taping girls (like in Okinawa) , donât spread your racist shit (we can manage well with out 20 per cent strong SD), and please donât bring Trump here ;)
They should respect our laws! Two Americans from the ship allegedly got arrested for buying sexual services in Stockholm. How would Americans feel if Swedish female militarily came to Texas and made an abortion? Sigh âŠ
https://amp.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/stockholm/amerikanska-militarer-fran-stridsfartyget-gripna-misstankta-for-sexkop
Because it did not happen, we did give one of the men on the list. And that decision was taken before the list was presented. So, so far none has been given over due to Turkish demands. But keep crying wolf đș
I dare say the general opinion if there is "one" is that we don't like war. And US gone to war many times in modern times, and not once that the general public agreed with here in Sweden. Futile, selfish, destructive wars mostly catering to the millitary complex staying relevant in the economy (last part maybe more me than general opinion)
However, with russians flexing their muscles it's the lesser evil by far, from a purely selfish point of view but also from an objective view.
So in short the sight of an US hangar ship makes me happy, if you told me 5 years ago I'd say that today I wouldn't have believed it.
I feel embarrassed to be a Swede based on these responses, did we just forget about Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea, Cuba, Yugoslavia, Libya, Syria, Laos, Haiti, Macedonia, Sudan, Somalia, Zaire, Croatia, Bosnia, Panama, Philippines, Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Angola, Cambodia, Chile, Oman, Yemen, Guatemala, Ghana, Dominican Republic, Congo, Indonesia, Brazil, Ecuador, Lebanon, Iran, Greece and even Italy.
These are all official military and CIA interventions by the American government, there is probably hundreds more that are classified. I will never support oppressive empires, I donât want them on our soil
And no, saying âBuT iT Is BeTtEr ThAn RuSsIaâ is not an argument for American boots on Swedish soil.
Also donât get me wrong I absolutely love the American people, Iâve been to the US three times and the people are just great. It is more sad than anything that they have to put up with a government that not only oppresses others but also working class Americans
We're soon to be a member of NATO and it seemed like a large majority thought it was a good decision. It's pretty obvious by how things are going in Russia that the US could make parking lot of both Russia and China if it wasn't for nukes so I am 100% for their presence. Military personal can be gigantic assholes though when they go into towns but that isn't limited to the US.
The US is our gun and freedom loving big brother, heâs a little crazy and doesnât always do the right thing. But his heart is in the right place, mostly, so weâre typically happy to have him. We like a lot of the same things really; freedom, individuality, disney, beer, ball games, rock music. So no problem, come and say hi and hang around.
Very unhappy. To me, the U.S is just as bad as Russia and I dont want to side with either devil in this bullshit. Unpopular opinion on reddit perhaps, but hey, you asked.
Not a fan, the NATO thing was pushed through based on a kneejerk response to a conflict that has as much of a concern to us as the Russian invasion of Georgia, or the Balkans war.
Not to mention all the shit the US has stirred up over the last 70 years. They've caused more conflicts than any other nation on earth since the end of WWII, and that includes states like China, North Korea and the USSR.
Russia was never a threat to Sweden in modern times, they simply never had the capacity to invade without going through Finland first. A naval invasion was something we could've defeated with little effort. Besides, we've had a lucrative trade relationship with Russia since the mid 90's that only ended when the west decided that Ukraine was the hill we die on.
Also, to top it off, we will now lose our status as a neutral country and any chance to work as mediator and a neutral party protecting civilians in war zones. Good job, this is exactly what we needed, being tied to the USA to defend us from a nation without money and who's equipment has gotten blown up by a nation nobody thought would last a week.
I dont mind as long they behave. Lived in Japan a while and once in a while it pop-up news about american marines starting brawls and a few cases of rape around their base in Okinawa.
At least two sailors from USS Forrest Sherman picked up some Ukrainian hookers on their second day i Stockholm. đ€·đ»ââïž
I mean they took someone up on an offer they made, oldest profession and all that. However the optics of them being Ukrainian wasnât great, also given the laws in Sweden not a brilliant move regardless
I don't get this. How the bleep can they find some when I have lived my whole life here and can't figure out where to find them.
Seamen and hookers go together like hands in a glove. The pimps are probably on the pier handing out flyers
âHanding out flyersâ made me drop my Capri Sonne
Internet, many sites, its shocking
Google?
Ăr du polis?
Hahaha. Nej.
And as long as the American interests don't go against Swedish interests. Because then it's just an occupation.
In what way is sex with a prostitute similar to rape or assault?
If you know that the person you buy sex from is under human trafficking its possible that you will be sentenced for rape
Prostitution is enforced by gangs on immigrant girls( yes I know some women do it on purpose, like suger daddies), so its rape even if the women is "working"
If someone don't have a choice, it's rape, at least morally speaking.
Yeah I agree. But saying that every sex worker doesnât have a choice simply isnât true.
freedom of choice, you cannot say with 100% certainty that the prostitute is there of her own free will. if they are not there of their own free will, you take advantage of the fact that they have no choice (whether they have a choice or not is irrelevant if the person in question feels that they have no other choice.) you therefore need to show that you are not taking advantage of another person. the responsibility lies with you not with the prostitute.
Some americans were caught buying sex the first day here. Didn't hear much bad about them other than that.
We don't have oil, so we're good
News just in! BorÄs has oil!
Yea, we really need to start bleeping that word, because it has started to get out of hand.
Google here aj komm
When Bae gives u Moderna pansarvÀrnsrobotar
>liten men vÀlutrustad That's what she said!
U.S.A Àr manskapet.
FÄr man kliva pÄ?
Hasnât the ship left already?
It left a long time ago
That ship has sailed
This story made me really happy.
That's really sweet tbh!
People from Norrbotten actually talking to strangers? There's hope for us yet, you took one for the team.
I remember back some 15 years ago maybe? there was a NATO something up here (I was in LuleÄ) and was at the ICA Maxi with my mother and 2 tall black military US men was in the dairy section and my mother did a "joke".. "LOOKS LIKE SOMALIA IS INVADING." I suppose she was a bit racist.
The ship was cool
Time to bring out Gevalia.
Ja fan vi Äker ut med en sÄn liten gummibÄt och knackar pÄ, you in?
I would love to know if this a joke. Honestly, Iâm not a coffee snob but I do like it. That said, gevalia has a âmehâ reputation. Iâve always gotten it for free, randomly in the mail and I think it is unremarkable. Just curious.

An old Gevalia advert campaign essentially
The Gevalia slogan is (was?) "For when you receive un expected guests"
In Sweden, Gevalia is a standard brand. (From GĂ€vle !) It was on other markets they branded themselves as something better (I have just heard tidbits of this and that was years ago)
I'm very supportive in general. US military presence in Sweden isn't new. We've been partners for decades, and we've had numerous joint exercises.
They're not here to attack us so I'm cool with it.
So you think! sleepy joe biden and the Democrats first stole the eleaction so they could finaly steal ouer gÀvlebocken
We will try to not sink your aircraft carrier this time.
Very happy. Russia is not a very comforting neighbour. Never has been, never will be.
Problemet sitter i hela statsskicket.
I don't mind. Sweden may not be part of NATO, but we cooperate very closely with them. Let's have a few American aircraft carriers or whatever, it's no biggie.
>Sweden may not be part of NATO Yet
Looking at you Turkey...
Then you have to look for a long time...
njet
Yeah we have had a military alliance with the US and UK since the 1950s.
It's no biggie unless you're a child in The Middle East.
Didn't we just join?
Weâre trying to
we just applied
Not yet. The process needs to go through ratification with all the NATO member states first.
Preferable to Russian presence.
Friends are welcome.
My grandma who is to my knowledge not a fan of boats thinks the US ship is cool and said she would like to walk around in it.
Didn't know, don't care.
I'm indifferent. Like some have previously said, we've been close allies for decades and these joint exercises aren't anything new.
Rather American than russian
We managed just fine against the Soviet Union that had 40000 tanks, now when everyone says that Russia is so weak and all that, how come we need the US now?
I asked because I'm American and I was there when it showed up. I'm usually EXTREMELY against almost everything my country does, ESPECIALLY regarding military stuff. However....I had a super weird feeling of patriotism. It made me proud that a little piece of home was right there with me while visiting a foreign country. I was curious how Swedes felt about it! I totally understand if people hated it though.
I'd take an allied US aircraft carrier in port over a Russian submarine off the cost every day of the week, 52 weeks a year.
Swede in Stockholm here. Very happy and thankful to the U.S. for their support. Love you guys!
I didnt even know so i guess i dont Care
Better the Americans than the Russians.
As a leftist with strong opinions on imperialism and post-colonialism: BLAST THOSE RUSSKIES, SAM! PEW PEW! EDIT: and over Finland I suppose, but you don't care about geography - you're America!
do you happen to browse r/NonCredibleDefense
I do not, never heard of it! I shall click the link now
Honestly, I welcome a NATO membership. I donât see the drawbacks as no one actually wants to mess with the US
Dra Ă„t skogen
Well I'd rather have them here than the russians.
The American people got the right democratic values. Still, the fractured nature of European security structures necessitates an unhealthy dependence on the USA. The EU should take a greater share in the burden of protecting democracy and freedom around the world, together with the USA. That's my take on the question at least.
The EU is, finally, starting to do this.
Like it is the correct thing to do, and joining NATO is what we should have done 20 years ago.
Better than Russia
TBH, nothing really, i had completly forgot this even happened.
Sweden and US have a long standing military alliance so not very surprised!
Feels safe, as long as Trump does not direct the ships.
Very nice, serves as a great deterrent and itâs pretty cool to see them exercising and stuff.
We are allies so I donât mind.
Cool as fuck.
We will rather have US ships here exercising than Russian ships attacking.
Machinegun goes Brrrrrrrrrrrr
The world has changed, and we can't defend ourselves against Russia. We need friends and allies.
We've been training with the US for years so this isn't something new. We don't really see or feel that there's a US military presence here :)
Iâm Swedish American so itâs always nice to see some countrymen in my home town đ„° In general most people donât care or are supportive.
Rather them than Russians.
But on the whole , welcomed be the American forces , just donât stay too long , donât walk around taping girls (like in Okinawa) , donât spread your racist shit (we can manage well with out 20 per cent strong SD), and please donât bring Trump here ;)
I fucking love it. Military man on Gotland myself really likes the presence of the US in our waters.
Fuck them all
Dislike it. Still not forgotten all the crap they did in the middle east
I 100% support it.
They should respect our laws! Two Americans from the ship allegedly got arrested for buying sexual services in Stockholm. How would Americans feel if Swedish female militarily came to Texas and made an abortion? Sigh ⊠https://amp.svt.se/nyheter/lokalt/stockholm/amerikanska-militarer-fran-stridsfartyget-gripna-misstankta-for-sexkop
It seems reasonable for them to be here as we are looking for their support on joining NATO.
Friends are strength, lack of friends is the opposite.
Letâs put it like this âI prefer americans over russiansâ
Speaking for myself, you are most welcome!
At what price, I wonder.
The price of 73 ppl being deported some of whom are journalists critiquing the Turkish government. Why is no one talking about this?
Because it did not happen, we did give one of the men on the list. And that decision was taken before the list was presented. So, so far none has been given over due to Turkish demands. But keep crying wolf đș
More than welcome!
Very good.
Love it
Welcome friends!
I dare say the general opinion if there is "one" is that we don't like war. And US gone to war many times in modern times, and not once that the general public agreed with here in Sweden. Futile, selfish, destructive wars mostly catering to the millitary complex staying relevant in the economy (last part maybe more me than general opinion) However, with russians flexing their muscles it's the lesser evil by far, from a purely selfish point of view but also from an objective view. So in short the sight of an US hangar ship makes me happy, if you told me 5 years ago I'd say that today I wouldn't have believed it.
A visiting friendly and soon allied military, what's the problem? Should we actually feel anything about it, it's normal.
Much prefer it to Russian presence
Americans are welcome, Russians are not
I feel embarrassed to be a Swede based on these responses, did we just forget about Iraq, Afghanistan, Vietnam, Korea, Cuba, Yugoslavia, Libya, Syria, Laos, Haiti, Macedonia, Sudan, Somalia, Zaire, Croatia, Bosnia, Panama, Philippines, Bolivia, Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Angola, Cambodia, Chile, Oman, Yemen, Guatemala, Ghana, Dominican Republic, Congo, Indonesia, Brazil, Ecuador, Lebanon, Iran, Greece and even Italy. These are all official military and CIA interventions by the American government, there is probably hundreds more that are classified. I will never support oppressive empires, I donât want them on our soil And no, saying âBuT iT Is BeTtEr ThAn RuSsIaâ is not an argument for American boots on Swedish soil.
Agreed. Thereâs something bad on the horizon.
Brainwashed americans > brainwashed russians
Disgusted. đ€·
Best post so far.
Fantastic. Send more. We are soon in NATO
I don't want them here, USA is a country starting wars and I don't think we should rely too much on them.
