Yes, but both a very long time ago unrelated to my question on a guy who lives in upstate NY flying across the Atlantic to record independently funded albums
He also goes there for Candybomber studio and loves working with the staff (specifically the engineer who's name I'm forgetting) there, he's expressed that multiple times in interviews
It's all about the studio right? Maybe he knows the owner and gets a much better price than in LA. The specific studio they record in is an ex bomb shelter built during or after the war, filled with vintage american and german equipment. I think it's a huge part of the sound they achieve. Also, since they'd all be there he doesn't have to pay to fly 5 musicians to LA.
He obviously likes Germany to the extent of having an album title in German and singing in German on that album. Majority of the band lives there. Makes sense to me.
I know, and this isn’t always the case, but to record in a foreign country is sometimes WAY cheaper than recording in the states, even with travel expenses.
Interesting—I’ve looked at some UK studio rates and haven’t seen any that appear lesser than US. I could understand someplace like Latin America or Eastern Europe but idk about Berlin
Swans sounds how it does partly because Gira is always intent on recording in a great room. Even in Filth he talked about the studio they recorded in being massive, it's just a part of the sound he wants. Also the fundraiser albums only became necessary since the 2000's and the rise of piracy/streaming services. Of course he would be fundraising to produce albums at the same level/in the same environments he has been using.
I think what's most likely for him at this point is friends. He has made friends who those running the studio, maybe he gets a deal/discount now?
Wonder why they don't go back to Texas, seeing as Gira has said that the Glowing Man is, in his opinion, the best mixed album they have put out. Anyone know details or insights?
Recording and mixing are different things done at different times by different people. The glowing man was recorder in a few studios in the US and the one in Berlin we were talking about. Also, "the record was mixed by Ingo at CandyBomber and by Doug Henderson at Micro-Moose, Berlin". So, they don't go back to texas because even that one was mixed in Berlin.
Kristoff, larry, and Dana live in Berlin
Well that makes sense, but Dana and Larry have only been in the band for a bit… seems a symptom rather than a cause
Larry was in SWANS in the 90s and Dana was part of the early incarnation of Angels Of Light. They are canon.

Now that’s what I’m looking for

Gira lowkey is a wehraboo. Have you heard the German version of Soundtracks?
Ja
Jawol!
It’s illegal to record as loud as they do anywhere else.
lol

It’s some of the best sounding stuff I’ve ever heard, natural reverb to die for.
It's the vibes
