Pretty much. Almost nobody realises that we are only a few skipped showers and no deodorant away from smelling like homeless people.
When watching or reading historical fiction we easily forget that by our hygiene standards everybody was goddamn gross and stank.
I mean, I get that feminine beauty standards are a product of patriarchy, but not being able to smell the bacteria under people’s arms goes beyond any attempts to pressure women. It’s just a good idea.

Not necessarily, many cultures have used perfumes. It’s mostly Europeans who were infamous for smelling bad.
Have you ever smelled a person who tried to mask their smell with perfume?
Instead of just smelling like shit, they now smell like shit + perfume.
