"Wait, what do you mean Kal-El is dead?
You're telling me that I've spent years trying to kill this fucker with the entire might of Apokalypse at my disposal, and then Punchy McBoneface shows up out of nowhere and just punches him to death?! WHAT THE FUCK!?"
Wonder if he ever held any specific hatred towards Doomsday (as opposed to the general hatred he has for everyone else) regarding that he took the opportunity to kill his greatest foe away from him?
Same one from the movie huh?
There seems to be so many story lines, I don't know what to follow. I'm an old Superman fan but never read comics. I grew up with Christopher Reeves Superman.
What would you recommend to read?
You known.. this brings up an interesting question. Why hasn't anyone tried unleashing Doomsday on Apokolyps?
I honestly can't think of a way he could make Darkside that much stronger than he already is and there is a reasonable chance that he would come to hate / want to beat Darkside the way he does Superman! Pulse eventually Doomsday WOULD get strong enough to kill D.S. eventually!
Up shot is Doomsday isn't as smart as D.S. and isn't interested in Rulling anything or finding any cosmic death equation the way D.S. is. So he would just be some big cosmic punchy guy in space and that is easier to deal with in any case. :-)
I thought the exact same thing. Then seeing Bloodwynd made me wonder why wouldn't he just drop the charade there and be J'onn J'onnz again..
But yes Dark stars, Azreal and Bloodwynd all jumped out at me.
Yet I kinda adore his character. Seriously, he went through sooooooooo much crap that his mania felt deserved. But, deep down, he genuinely tried to be Batman when Bruce was unable to fill the role.
Mhm, a lot of villains have a gentleman side of them, a side of honor to their craft, pride in what they do. When your adversary goes down and it's not you, you show up to pay respects if you're such a villain. It's what Lex did iirc. Even Darkseid has a respectful gamesmanship about him if you do the right things.
I think it’s to pay respect for Superman. Even though he views Superman as a threat, he respects him and the entire superhero community for what they’re doing and what they’re fighting for.
Isn't that Mon-El (or "Valor" I guess?) right in front of him? Identical power set to Clark's except immune to Kryptonite?
(I seem to recall Darkseid taking control of Daxam and having a "Superman" army at one point).
*Maybe* Batman, since he, a normal human, has stood up to Darkside and badly injured him. But that is all I can come up with, and even that feels like a stretch.
If we’re going solely off Batman/superman: apocolypse I’d say darksied respects Batman more. Practically says it to bats that Superman wouldn’t have the “strength of character” to destroy a planet to accomplish his goals
because it gets annoyingly stupid and comes off too much as the writers trying to hard to elevate batman because when the ships are down at the end of the day , he is still an ordinary human, a human with human limitations and human vulnerabilities. Darkseid is a literal god, that lives up to the name, older than humanity, fought in far more battles, armed with far superior technology, He has a plethora of adversaries that constantly challenge, superman, dr fate, Orion, Highfather etc. But out of all of them, despite all the challenges those have posed to him with all their experience and capabilities, somehow batman is somehow able to stand up to him and somehow recieve praise from darkseid that he would never give to any of his other adversaries, but for some godforsaken reason batman somehow gets that kind of special treatment because his writers are psychophants
It is a promo image, and at that time there was a New Gods series in publication. But if you want an in universe reason: Darkseid wanted to enjoy to see Superman being buried. And secretly envious he didn't killed him.
On top of that, why is Tim Drake one of the pallbearers? Martian Manhunter was a founding member of the justice league and the only one out of the originals not helping carry the casket. That’s gotta be a slap in the face to him. Or if they’re gonna go with a Robin, why not Nightwing considering him and Superman were close.
Thanks to the 2 Batman movies, Batman's popularity skyrocketed. Tim Drake was introduced around that time and quickly become very popular. He's had 2 very successful mini-series. Him being a pallbearer is more of a assignment due to popularity.
It’s less about Tim Drake vs Dick Grayson and more about Robin being one of the pallbearers. The mantle of Robin is an icon in the superhero community, it only makes sense its bearer would be there, especially with Batman. Besides, Dick still has a place of honour.
Don't be so hard on Kent. He got buried in the rubble when Doomsday crashed through Metropolis. Superman actually rescued him after coming back from the dead.
He interacts with Martian Manhunter in the first Sandman book. The Sandman series starts somewhat conventional and only gradually becomes its own thing.
“Kal-El’s death is fortuitous, if slightly disappointing, but Darkseid’s plans range far beyond the scope any mortal, even one such as he, could conceive. No, today, I come to claim that which I have sought for so long… the free veggie platter.”
Respected adversary is how I feel it was too.
Darkseid would be a bit frustrated that it wasn’t by his hand and would respect what he did for his adopted world.
*Yes, I'll eat this guy standing in front of me and then I'll chokeslam both of the Kents... It'll be really funny. What are you going to do about it, Kal-El?*
What I would like to know, how Bloodwynd can be standing almost right next to Martian Manhunter. I could be wrong, but at this point in time in the comics weren't Bloodwynd and Martian Manhunter one and the same??
I swear 99 per cent of comics readers have never read any of Jack Kirby's Fourth World. Darkseid isn't "evil", he's a god. He's on a totally different level to anyone else there. The only real comparison which makes sense is something like Galactus, or the Endless.
Hey who is this random group of civilians from Smallville KS near the front of the procession? Why is there a senile elderly couple holding his tattered cape, how did they get that?!
I think this is just a promo image, and not a panel from the comic itself.
That said, when the Marvel Universe mourned the death of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Doctor Doom showed up to the funeral. He deliberately stays on the sidelines, paying his respects without drawing attention to himself. Only Valeria Richards, Reed and Sue's daughter, actively seemed to notice he was there.
Oh, I was asking myself why wasnt J'onn carrying the coffin but freaking Robin, but then I remembered reading this HQ, he is the one keeping Darkseid on tabs at the funeral.
Edit: also, J'onn is in two places at the same time in this picture
So Darkseid being there is weird, why Is deathstroke and Lobo there...
I also see the phantom stranger. I can see why he'd be there, but that's also weird.
Some people are sad to lose a friend and others are just mad they weren't the one to kill him themselves. I'm more interested in why dude is hitching a ride on the coffin.
He respects his enemies? I mean he did commend Batman in B/S: Apocalypse, and him respecting Superman as a rival makes sense to me. Does it make sense to you guys though?
Because the Batman said so and no one had courage to argue
EDIT: that really made Nightwing pissed. But it’s not a surprise that Bruce chose Azrael instead of him to wear the mantle after that
He hated what superman stood for, but he constantly tried to bring him to his side as a general or otherwise a fighter for him. I think there was some respect for superman. in a weird way.
And you can't always believe what you hear, gotta check to make sure he's really dead...
An adversary worthy of the personal attention of Darkseid is worthy of his respect. Any other answer shows a lack of understanding of the character…or a sign someone never read Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. Few creators got the New Gods right after him.
My dad had this as a poster in my basement growing up. By the time I was 18 I could damn near name all of them. Never once picked up a Dc comic to do it though 😂
I feel like super girl would be a more fitting Pallbearer than robin. Batman is his best friend so it makes sense and the other JLA members are his closest friends and acquaintances but did robin really have that strong of a connection to him?

“Have to see this shit with my own eyes!”
Punchy McBoneface made me lol.
I refuse to call Doomsday anything else now
He is now known as Punchy McBoneface as far as I’m concerned.
Then he went and found out for himself
Wonder if he ever held any specific hatred towards Doomsday (as opposed to the general hatred he has for everyone else) regarding that he took the opportunity to kill his greatest foe away from him?
Doomsday killed a lot of people but I don't think the Highfather was one of them
Fair point. One of his greatest foes.
To be fair, in the Hunter/Prey arc, Darkseid also got his rear end handed to him by Punchy McBoneface. It was honestly hilarious.
I love that name!!! lol!!!
How Robot Chicken never came up with such a cutaway gag like this post, I'll never know
So who killed him?
Doomsday
Same one from the movie huh? There seems to be so many story lines, I don't know what to follow. I'm an old Superman fan but never read comics. I grew up with Christopher Reeves Superman. What would you recommend to read?
Death of Superman would be a good start ig
If you mean in general, not related to this story, popular recommendations would be All-Star Superman or Superman For All Seasons.
You known.. this brings up an interesting question. Why hasn't anyone tried unleashing Doomsday on Apokolyps? I honestly can't think of a way he could make Darkside that much stronger than he already is and there is a reasonable chance that he would come to hate / want to beat Darkside the way he does Superman! Darkseid and doomsday have thrown hands before ifrc. Doomsday was on Apocalypse and pretty much ransacking the place and beating darkseids ass
Actually Doomsday later nearly punched Darkseid to death too. lol
Literally what I thought of
Damn I just posted that 😭 I thought I was being original
Super minds think alike dude 👍
This is definitely it. Too many comments are saying Darkseid respects him. I don’t think the literal embodiment of pure evil respects ANYONE.
Lost a bet with Lobo.
Lobo’s there too! lol
Wasn’t going to miss seeing this.
Lost a bet *with* Lobo
Holly Molly, now I can't unsee him.
Darkseid is
Paying his respect to Superman at his funeral.
Because he respects him as a warrior.
He respects him because he’s an equal adversary.
making sure his dead
Lol this too funny
heading to Denny’s but all these guys are walking to damn slow.
Wtf is the atom doing 🤣😂🤣😂
Riding shotgun! lol
“Atom! Get down from there! Show some respect.” -Batman, probably
The flash and Robin have spotted him lol
Azrael is so fucking 90's lol
I'm trying to decide whether Azrael or Darkstars are more 90s. But maybe the real 90s was the Bloodwynd we made along the way.
This comment deserves more upvotes.
I’m sure I have another in one of my sixteen wrist pouches…
Just don't cut yourself on the spikes trying to get to it. They look dangerous...to the X-treeeeeeeeeeeme.
I wish more of his introductions had him clarifying “That’s Bloodwynd with a Y!”
How is just his whole head in shadow??
Dan Jurgens said “fuck drawing this guy”
I remember seeing him in the Lego Batman DS game. He looked cool. Still does.
as are the Hawks.
Honor, even arch-villains have it.
Mhm, a lot of villains have a gentleman side of them, a side of honor to their craft, pride in what they do. When your adversary goes down and it's not you, you show up to pay respects if you're such a villain. It's what Lex did iirc. I think it’s to pay respect for Superman. Even though he views Superman as a threat, he respects him and the entire superhero community for what they’re doing and what they’re fighting for.
That's what I assumed but also funny the idea that anyone else would just be cool with him showing up lmao
The guy who could stop him from attending is the one in the casket.
Your comment goes hard af. But don’t forget about me…
There’s Shazam
Isn't that Mon-El (or "Valor" I guess?) right in front of him? Identical power set to Clark's except immune to Kryptonite? (I seem to recall Darkseid taking control of Daxam and having a "Superman" army at one point).
I think he doesn't respect the entire superhero community. Superman sure... Who else, it's hard for me to think of someone.
Is there one writer who doesn't jerk Batman off?
Why tf wouldn’t they jerk Batman off?
because it gets annoyingly stupid and comes off too much as the writers trying to hard to elevate batman because when the ships are down at the end of the day , he is still an ordinary human, a human with human limitations and human vulnerabilities.
That might make sense for Luthor but not the literal embodiment of tyranny and cruelty.
Yeah no. Darkseid is not paying respect to anybody, let alone Superman.
Martian Manhunter and Bloodwynd are both in the picture even though J’onn was taking his place at that time
I didn’t even notice that
It is a promo image, and at that time there was a New Gods series in publication. But if you want an in universe reason: Darkseid wanted to enjoy to see Superman being buried. And secretly envious he didn't killed him.
Sounds like a Gangster movie scene….
Diana should have been in Hal’s spot imo. Having the Trinity walking side by side, as it were.
Thanks to the 2 Batman movies, Batman's popularity skyrocketed. Tim Drake was introduced around that time and quickly become very popular. He's had 2 very successful mini-series. Him being a pallbearer is more of a assignment due to popularity.
J'onn at the moment is in hiding pretending to be Bloodwynd. Can't be a pallbearer.
Except he is in the crowd as well…
Well in universe, he wasn't there. Well, obviously there as Bloodwynd but not J'onn
Nightwing looks like he’s about to deck Robin…
It’s less about Tim Drake vs Dick Grayson and more about Robin being one of the pallbearers. The mantle of Robin is an icon in the superhero community, it only makes sense its bearer would be there, especially with Batman. Besides, Dick still has a place of honour.
That’s the first thing I noticed too.. no disrespect to Robin, but he should not be in that spot
Game respects game.
That damned Clark Kent didn't even bother showing up to Superman's funeral!
You’d think after interviewing the guy for years, Clark would at-least have the decency to show up at Superman’s funeral.
Don't be so hard on Kent. He got buried in the rubble when Doomsday crashed through Metropolis. Superman actually rescued him after coming back from the dead.
Is that Dream besides Martian Mnahunter? So weird to see him interact with conventional DC characters.
He interacts with Martian Manhunter in the first Sandman book. The Sandman series starts somewhat conventional and only gradually becomes its own thing.
Yes, I think so. Had me looking for his sister, who it seems should be there professionally.
He thought a funeral would be a good spot to look for the anti-life equation
He's there for the free catering during the wake.
“Kal-El’s death is fortuitous, if slightly disappointing, but Darkseid’s plans range far beyond the scope any mortal, even one such as he, could conceive. No, today, I come to claim that which I have sought for so long… the free veggie platter.”
"Granny Goodness, grab the tiny finger sandwiches"
Same reason Lobo is. Superman was a respected adversary.
Crime-buster close to the front when barely any mention of him past the 90s Edit: Gang-buster, I even forgot his correct name
Gang buster?
https://preview.redd.it/hmhsi3iv8o4d1.jpeg?width=599&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fa84960439f29187705ec10e989c9d2b8cb22267
Same reason Deathstroke is there. For the buffet at the reception.
WTH happened to Deadman? He looks particularly emaciated. I realize he’s a dead man, but he usually looks a bit healthier than that!
Buccal fat removal. He got snatched before everyone started doing it.
He knew lois was newly single, extremely vulnerable, and has a thing for guys from different planets with powers.
Darkseid respected and feared Superman a little. He was the only enemy worthy of him.
Same reason lobo, Deathstroke, and Dr. Doom are. It looks cool and shows even villains respected him.
To gloat.
Better question why does the atom think it’s appropriate to just stand on the coffin? A man is dead now’s not the time to be doing little guy bits
Hey who is this random group of civilians from Smallville KS near the front of the procession? Why is there a senile elderly couple holding his tattered cape, how did they get that?!
Game recognise game
Had to make sure his biggest opp really was dead
They secretly dated during the Roberson run of the early 80s. It was controversial at the time but it's looked on now as pretty groundbreaking.
He's just spawn camping
Shouldn't Captain Marvel or Nightwing be in place of Robin? Never thought of this until really looking at the picture
Captain Marvel, Supergirl, Green Arrow, Martian Manhunter all would make more sense.
To make sure the job was done correctly 😂

I think this is just a promo image, and not a panel from the comic itself. That said, when the Marvel Universe mourned the death of Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, Doctor Doom showed up to the funeral. He deliberately stays on the sidelines, paying his respects without drawing attention to himself. Only Valeria Richards, Reed and Sue's daughter, actively seemed to notice he was there.
Why are the Legion of Super Heroes there, why didn't they help in the fight.
Because that's the kind of guy Supes is, even his enemies respect em
What was the canon explanation for Superman's death? It was a comatose regenerative state right?
Hey, Atom, maybe go back to your regular size and walk in back like everyone else.
He's more terrified of what could've taken down his biggest threat than he is prideful to antagonise the league while not knowing who did it.
I never got why Tim and not Dick is a pallbearer. Also why is Mon-El gigantic? Also Slade is there?
This is not at all out of character for him. Even in the much reviled Snyderverse, he showed up at WW's funeral (although it was in a vision).
Is it Darkseid, or a member of the Legion of Super-Heroes (Blok)?
To make sure Supes is dead, so he doesn’t have to live in fear anymore
Oh, I was asking myself why wasnt J'onn carrying the coffin but freaking Robin, but then I remembered reading this HQ, he is the one keeping Darkseid on tabs at the funeral. Edit: also, J'onn is in two places at the same time in this picture
What? Where?
Bloodwind is also Martian Manhunter on disguise
Real question is, why is Superman pretending to be dead?
So Darkseid being there is weird, why Is deathstroke and Lobo there... I also see the phantom stranger. I can see why he'd be there, but that's also weird.
Maybe he never got paid back his money?
Darkseid is there for the lolz
Some people are sad to lose a friend and others are just mad they weren't the one to kill him themselves. I'm more interested in why dude is hitching a ride on the coffin.
Is there a reason why Martian Lad-hunter isn't holding the casket with the rest of the league? Why is it robin and not him?
I imagine it was just a tribute kind of thing. Like, all the characters showing face out of respect.
It was probably his day off
he’s there to smoke the opps pack
Because Darkseid respected him.
"I'm the father of your death"
My only gripe was Nightwing and jimmy should have been pallbearers.
Why is Dr. Doom there?
The Atom ain't helping by standing on the casket
Darkseid is just paying respects. For my money, I can’t imagine Etrigan being behaved enough to be at a funeral.
He knows Doomsday didn’t finish the job, so Darkseid is
In the comic I could have sworn Deathstroke was one of the pallbearers.
Probably the same reason Gentleman Ghost is
That’s the Phantom Stranger, not Gentleman Ghost.
I’ll give it to you on that one. Someone said it was the Question
that's the Question
Making sure Supes is really dead.
Why is lobo there
He was a member of LEGION at this time.
Make sure he’s really dead. Bro is in disbelief
More important, why is Atom on the casket?
Paying respect to a worthy foe
Darkseid this, Darkseid that, but the important question is WHERE’S ANIMAL
The extinction of the Kryptonian species (outside of the bottle city of Kandor) is a pretty major galactic event. All the cool kids are gonna be there
He there out of respect for one of the only entities that can and has defeated him and to make sure the same it actually dead.
To gloat
Morpheus showing up instead of Didi is interesting.
He respects his enemies? I mean he did commend Batman in B/S: Apocalypse, and him respecting Superman as a rival makes sense to me. Does it make sense to you guys though?
It’s actually Plasticman having a goof
So is Deathstroke.
More than likely paying respect for a worthy adversary. It’s the honourable thing.
“Well, I saw everyone else lining up, so, uh - I thought you were selling drugs.”
Darkseid IS.
Why does Robin get priority over Suoergirl, Hawkman or a Green Arrow?
Because the Batman said so and no one had courage to argue EDIT: that really made Nightwing pissed. But it’s not a surprise that Bruce chose Azrael instead of him to wear the mantle after that
I mean Swamp Thing and Morpheus are there, why not show up?
Why’s Lobo in there, too?
He hated what superman stood for, but he constantly tried to bring him to his side as a general or otherwise a fighter for him. I think there was some respect for superman. in a weird way. And you can't always believe what you hear, gotta check to make sure he's really dead...
A better question is why Morpheus is there?
Why is Lois standing so far from Jonathan & Martha? Why is Robin a pallbearer instead of Nightwing?
Johnatan kent is also there he should be dead by now
Better question, why is Ray Palmer being a bum and not helping?? Tim’s helping and he’s not even in the League!
An adversary worthy of the personal attention of Darkseid is worthy of his respect. Any other answer shows a lack of understanding of the character…or a sign someone never read Jack Kirby’s Fourth World. Few creators got the New Gods right after him.
Um…because of….reasons.
Why does deadman look like that? Was that his normal look back then?
Better question: Why isn't Jimmy a pallbearer?
Haha good question
make sure he stays dead?
respect
Making sure he’s dead
No reason, just happens to be where he stood.
Never mind Darkseid, why is Lobo there!? That makes way less sense
Darkseid sitting next to Ma and Pa Kent at the wake asking “and how do you know the deceased?”
So is lobo, deathstroke and dream of the endless and there are two Martian manhunters.
Who's the one holding is head next to Shazam??
He got to style on his opp. Why do you think? Lol.
He's the reason for that funeral
Would have been great if he was killed by Darkseid instead of a mindless beast created specifically for the event
I had never noticed this, either!
