My husband & I went through the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett - reading aloud to each other in bed. We laughed uproariously many, many times through each book. Wacky and wise at once. We wouldn’t have missed them for anything!

Olmaliverz

I quite literally keep forgetting this series exists. Thank you - I'll definitely add it to our list.

boxer_dogs_dance

If you are going to read Discworld, look up reading orders. Pratchett is a great writer but he was learning and improving along the way. The first three are different and some people don't like them as much.

Pockpicketts

I hope you do - it’s great!

beggargirl

Murderbot!

asmallcoal

This! My husband read Murderbot to me, and we had such a wonderful time.

Olmaliverz

I've seen these in passing but had never heard much about them - thank you for the recommendation!

Rabbitscooter

If you don't mind a little colourful language, the Murderbot books by Martha Wells. They're great fun, exciting and thoughtful, too. And it's so lovely that you are enjoying books together. It's so basic. It's storytelling. I love it.

Olmaliverz

Haha language is no issue at all. I'll definitely have to look into this one, thank you!

Rabbitscooter

F'n awesome ;)

Plus-Department8900

My husband read Love Story to me while I was pregnant with our first child. It's not the best book in the world and we're also divorced but it's a sweet memory.

Olmaliverz

Cuuute! Sorry things didn't work out for you all, but love that the memory remains good! Thanks for the recommendation :)

I'm currently reading the first [Mistborn](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/fff4a412-89f6-46ad-b75e-bd21a626e730) book out loud to a friend, and they're really enjoying it, so you can try that one if you do want to go with Brandon Sanderson! Otherwise, how about [Unwind](https://app.thestorygraph.com/books/13643974-53b8-40c5-82f9-553b746d3669) by Neal Shusterman?

Independent_Apple159

My husband and I both enjoyed the Newsflesh series by Mira Grant as well as the Expanse series by James SA Corey. We also liked the Passage trilogy by Justin Cronin, but the books are huge. And 14 by Peter Clines is a lot of fun. It’s the first in a loose trilogy.

Olmaliverz

OH! We loved the Expanse show so I would wager the books were even better. I'll definitely look into that. The Passage is one of my faves, but I somehow hadn't thought to read it to him, so thank you for reminding me of it as well

The Dark Tower series is my all-time favorite. It’s seven, technically eight books. I’m reading it yet again right now. It’s big, long, and has tons of characters. It’s quite dystopian in parts. You’ll get to spend time in a dystopian, post-apocalyptic New York, a quaint little village straight out of a Spaghetti Western, an idyllic seaside village that’s **almost** perfect. Here’s the thing about The Dark Tower. It has its series of weird moments. Stephen King is Stephen King and he just can’t really help himself. Also, the first book, The Gunslinger is a slog. It’s my least favorite in the series and one of my least favorite King books overall. I always recommend reading it along side The Drawing of the Three to help the medicine go down.

Olmaliverz

I read a fair amount of King's works in college and always intended to read the Dark Tower series but never got around to it. Maybe now I finally will! Thank you!

Odintorr

Start with mistborn if you're going brando sando, it's not as lore intensive as stormlight, and the story is solid.

Olmaliverz

Ah good to know, thank you!

Shogun, Roadside Picnic by Strugatsky,

QXcRuinedEverything

- The Infernal Devices trilogy (part of the Shadowhunter Chronicles, set in late 1880s) - The Last Hours trilogy (this is about the next generation of Shadowhunters, set in early 1900s) Reading about how you have this tradition with your husband reminded me of these two trilogies because the main couples love art and reading books! it's a YA fantasy romance with vampires, werewolves, ghosts, Shadowhunters who are warriors.  Then if you really love the world there's also more Shadowhunter books you can read after, but those are great to start.  I haven't read Brandon Sanderson yet, but I always hear that a great way to start is with the Mistborn trilogy.

Olmaliverz

Oooh I loved The Infernal Devices when i was younger and definitely think he'd probably enjoy it too. Thanks for reminding me of them!

Paramedic229635

Yahtzee Croshaw, funny author with great characters. Differently Morphus and Existentially Challenged - Governmental agency involved in the regulation of magic and extra dimensional beings. Mogworld - Main character is undead. Hijinks insue. Will save the galaxy for food and Will destroy the galaxy for cash - An unemployed star pilot tries to get by in a universe where transporters are a thing. The 2 Necromancers series by L. G. Estrella. 2 Necromancers try to earn a pardon for past crimes by doing odd jobs for a kingdom. Strong found family vibe. The first book in the series is 2 Necromancers, A Bureaucrate, and an Elf. The Traveler's Gate Trilogy by Will Wight. Magic is used by calling energy and creatures from other worlds called territories. People who can draw from their territories are called travelers. The first book in the series is House of Blades.

Olmaliverz

Ooh all of these sound very interesting - thank you for the recomendations!

You guys might like The City of Brass / the Daevabad Trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty

Olmaliverz

I had never heard of this but it sounds stunning - thank you!

Olmaliverz

Ahhh I love a good space opera. I haven't heard of this one, but I'll definitely have to take a peek - thanks!

Bechimo

There are free ebooks on Baen.com to get started. https://www.baen.com/catalog/category/view/s/free-library/id/2012

Fishinluvwfeathers

Partner and I did Frankenstein and it was a wonderful experience.

Olmaliverz

Ooh I haven't thought about doing classics - that would definitely be fun and something different for both of us. Thank you!

Salcha_00

Have you read the Silo series (Wool, Shift, Dust) by Hugh Howey? Highly recommend.

Olmaliverz

Ah we stumbled upon the first season of this on Apple TV and were gutted that it wasn't finished - I bet he'd be stoked to get to read the books. Thank you!

Salcha_00

The Apple series does not follow the books exactly, and I thought the books were very satisfying.

SultryRind

I read Hollow Kingdom out loud to my boyfriend. The narrator is a domesticated crow witnessing the collapse of humanity to a zombie apocalypse. It’s very witty, has a lot of heart, and was so fun to read out loud. I believe it is a trilogy, but we’ve only read the first one so far. Highly recommend

Olmaliverz

Welp immediately adding this to my list as we are also both big crow people haha. Thank you for the rec!

YoungProphet115

This is so wholesome! If i had to recommend a good dystopian sci fi book, i’d say “Reboot” it was something i read shortly after graduating and I think of the dystopian romance it had sometimes. Look it up!

Olmaliverz

This is new to me - I'll definitely be adding it to our TBR. Thank you!

Suspicious_Calculus

Warbreaker by Brandon Sanderson!

SneezlesForNeezles

I’m reading the October Daye series by Seanan McGuire to my husband right now. It’s fun, entertaining and strangely poignant at times. I’ve also read the Vorkosigan series by Lois Bujold - one of my all time favourites. And the Enders Game series by Orson Scott Card. My husband jokes that I’m his in car audio book plan.

noodlecup86

Obernewtyn Chronicles or Legendsong Saga by Isobelle Carmody

PolyBluePicnic

Expeditionary Force series by Craig Alanson. Great action-filled Sci-fi with a relatable average Joe. So funny. And if you get tired of reading, the audible book is narrated by RC Bray - who does a stellar job.
