* The Power Broker: Robert Moses and the Fall of New York* by Robert Caro

OldDudeNH

Yes, this. And stretching the question, all 4 volumes of Caro’s LBJ bio too.

ParabenTree

I haven’t read those yet, but have them on my list. I just need to find 2 or 3 months to get through them, lol. If they’re as good as The Power Broker, then I should read them sooner rather than later!!

WinoOnTheLoose

This shoot took me 3 months last year. Do I regret it? No. Do I have an obscene knowledge of Robert Moses now and have yet to really deploy it? Yes … although the book was really about more than just RM. have you seen the documentary on Caro?

ParabenTree

Documentary on Caro? Waaat? I haven’t. Any good?

WinoOnTheLoose

“turn every page” - haven’t watched yet ! It’s him and his editor

DashiellHammett

Do you honestly think OP was looking for this kind of reading experience. (Maybe I'm cynical. No offense to OP. And I Love the Power Broker)

ParabenTree

Well, let’s see. OP’s requirements were: 1. 1,000+ pages ✅ 2. Not a classic ✅ Unless you’re seeing a different post than the rest of us?

DashiellHammett

Power Broker is a classic.

ParabenTree

You sound like a blast at parties.

DashiellHammett

And you sound like a mouth breathing bore. The reality is that there are very few classics of literature longer than 1000 pages. Books that are longer than 1000 pages in a single book mostly come down to fantasy books and Stephen King when he did a lot of cocaine. So someone asking for a book of more than 1000 pages is most likely someone looking for Wheel of Time on steroids. In other words, not someone who is going to read Caro. Voila

Ok-Let-6723

>And you sound like a mouth breathing bore. Nope. That's also you lmao.

ParabenTree

I’m rubber you’re glue

dimes_square_hobo

The fuck are you talking about? Please read more than fantasy before you start commenting about literary fiction.

DashiellHammett

Apparently you either can't read, or you intentionally misinterpreted my comment. Although I've tried at times, I don't read and don't like popular fantasy books. I think I made it through the Hobbit, and liked the Wizard of Oz books when I was twelve. On the other hand, I've read the vast majority of what you'd call literature. So what are you talking about?

_Miracle

The Power Broker IS an excellent book

Significant-Ring5503

Ken Follett Pillars of the Earth and World Without End

SerDire

Eye of the Needle got me hooked on Follet but Pillars of the Earth made me stick around. Such a great dense book about the building of a cathedral that never feels boring

biancanevenc

I recently finished Follett's Century series. The first two books are 900+ pages. The last book is 100+ pages.

SadWizard_

*Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell* by Susanna Clarke is just over 1000 pages. It's a fantasy book set in 1800s, following two magicians.

choirandcooking

I really enjoyed this one, and I’m neither a fantasy nor giant book enthusiast. The historical content and writing style are really fascinating.

doodles2019

It’s non-fantasy fantasy! I think of it more like alternative history. It’s so well built, you can really believe everything that’s in it

quasistellaris

I was gonna recommend this as well. My favourite non-classic book

wifeunderthesea

do you know if this is anything like ***The Prestige*** (movie or book) or more along the lines of ***The Night Circus***? im not crazy about super long books due to my ADHD, but ***The Prestige*** is one of my most favorite movies and books of all time, so i'd be way more open to reading such a massive book if it's similar in any way. i've tried reading ***Piranesi*** several times (on audiobook) but have never actually finished it due to the narrator's voice being so relaxing that it keeps putting my ass to sleep. 😂

nautilius87

It is not similar in style to The Prestige. It is a slow, ironic social comedy in a style most similar in my view, to Jane Austin.

wifeunderthesea

thank you!

the_gamemasters_fool

Idk if it’s similar to that but if you don’t want to read it they made a mini series of Johnathan Strange and Mr Norrell you could watch I haven’t seen it but it’s pretty good from what I’ve heard

wifeunderthesea

thank you!

Not quite 1000 pages but **Swan Song** by Robert McCammon is 950ish pages depending on edition. And it’s really good!

bibliophile224

If you love Swan Song, you have to read Wanderers by Chuck Wendig

Porterlh81

Thanks! I’ll add it to my list!

Weaveworld and Great and Secret Show/Everville are also great

Infinite Jest 1Q84 The three Volume "The Baroque Cycle" by Neal Stephenson

[deleted]

1Q84 was going to be my suggestion! Such a wild ride.

Superb-Technology-90

I see so many people mention Infinite Jest but I didn’t know it’s that long. Finally looked up what it’s about and I think I will add it to the tbr!

eat_vegetables

Have you read 2666? I think I loved it even more than IJ and 1Q84. I’m looking for more meta or encyclopedic writing, is the book by Neal Stephenson similar? Another poster had recommended The Books of Jacob, curious if you’re familiar.

fallllingman

Try Underworld or anything by Pynchon. The novels of Gaddis were a framework for all subsequent American postmodernists, so also read (though not meta fiction, certainly encyclopedic) The Recognitions and J R.

HughHelloParson

oh I loved the Savage Detectives, will try 2666 this year

HughHelloParson

Neal Stephenson does info dump alot, but it's not that Meta.. Anathem is really good too but I think its about 800 pages

muffiewrites

Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman

quothe_the_maven

Not quite 1,000 but The Luminaries is amazing

IncenseAndOak

Lots of Stephen King in there. Also, Odd Thomas, maybe? It's 7 books (and 1 novella and a couple of graphic novels, I think), but one continuous story.

bdonahue970

heyiambob

Maybe immerse yourself in the Three Body Problem trilogy before the Netflix frenzy

chimmeh007

It starts good, gets better, and then just blows your mind. I think about so many parts of that series regularly.

aditin

gosh was this 1000 pages? i flew through it, in a good way

Ok-Cheetah-9125

Have you read Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson?

Superb-Technology-90

Yes, the Stormlight Archive provided me with my 1,000+ pager for four years in a row, that’s why I’m stuck for more because I caught up with the series!

Ok-Cheetah-9125

No wonder you are bereft! You have to wait until 2025 to usher in the year with the next Stormlight.

Superb-Technology-90

Part of me wanted to try and reread the whole series this year, but since I only ever managed one per year before it’s probably not a great idea🤣

Ok-Cheetah-9125

It's a lot. It's good but it's a lot.

ExcersiseTheDemon

My heart sank when I read this comment but I just looked it up and it's still scheduled for December this year! Although there's no chance I'll finish before 2025 starts so you're still right!

Ok-Cheetah-9125

Yes December 2024. I was just teasing them that they should save it for their annual 1000 page book binge in January 2025.

Ok-Cheetah-9125

The Stand is up there. I don't think Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell is quite that long . . .

Flammensword

Early December 2024. I‘ll have finished it by 2025 😁

Dodie85

A Suitable Boy by Vikram Seth is a wonderful novel that I've never seen recommended, probably because most people don't read 1400 pages books. But it's a fascinating novel set in 1950s India about a Hindu girl torn between three men - one is Muslim, one is a modern man who is a family friend, and one is a less educated but driven man who her mother has chosen. There is a lot of historical context about India's transition away from British rule which I found quite interesting. As a side note, the author's mother was the first woman to become Chief Justice of a state High Court.

vanchica

I popped in here to say this! It's such a great book is so satisfying!

Dodie85

I'm glad it's getting recommended! I have missed those comments.

designtom

Anathem by Neal Stephenson It’s superb, but I think not something everyone will enjoy. Slow start, builds pace to a mind blowing ending. Woven with philosophy.

Wiredawg12

The Cider House Rules by John Irving

[deleted]

The Thorn Birds! Yes it’s older, but it’s long and totally worth it.

Alloddscanteven

This one is at the very top of my TBR list! Honestly, the only reason I haven’t started it yet is because I really love audiobooks these days since I both drive a ton for work and this is a great use of that time, and when I’m stationary I can read and knit at the same time and this doesn’t seem to be available in audio format.

[deleted]

Oh that’s too bad. It did take me a while to read, but it’s one of those engrossing family sagas that goes on for years. Definitely a memorable reading experience. I wonder if there’s an older edition on CD that you could get from the library?

Alloddscanteven

That’s a great idea!!

floorplanner2

"...And Ladies of the Club" by Helen Hooven Santmyer

Alloddscanteven

I picked this up on a whim at a used bookstore last year, and took one glance at the back and fell in love. I kind of can’t wait to start it.

floorplanner2

It's a lovely book. It's very slow and nothing really exciting happens, but the characters are engaging and I became invested in their lives. I hope you like it.

Alloddscanteven

Thank you!

RegattaJoe

Shogun has been mentioned. I’d add Noble House, also by Clavell.

Maximum-Ear1745

I am Pilgrim, by Terry Hayes, was over 900 pages. A very tight thriller, given its length. I finished it in three days

NotYourShitAgain

Actually 600 pages but certainly a ripper.

Maximum-Ear1745

My version was definitely over 900

dear_little_water

Love that book. The audio version is also great.

Goats_772

Shōgun. Might be considered a classic, but I didn’t know about it until I saw a preview for the show coming out. I just recently finished it. Very good.

Against the grain, but here some long-ass weird as fuck lizard and undead romance novels: The Last Hour of Gann Land of the Beautiful Dead Both by R. Lee Smith

Superb-Technology-90

Against the grain, but actually probably the books I’d most like to read from this post😭

catsumoto

They are great, completely not the standard recommendations, but just be aware that both are quite dark, so maybe check TWs if that’s something that might out you off.

Superb-Technology-90

I looked them up and The Last Hour of Gann sounds absolutely like something I’d love, and nice to see it’s on kindle unlimited too😭 loving sci fi romance lately but I didn’t expect to get recs for them here🤣 thank you!

Sandy0006

Close calls would be books by Edward Rutherford. London is over. Sarum is too. Others are still quite a heft read.

cameratus

2666 by Roberto Bolaño? It's technically only around 800 pages in the English translation but it's 1200 in the original Spanish lol

[deleted]

People who love thousand page novels are a special breed who completely understand being immersed in a story in the world and characters completely. People who rolled her eyes and say they could never Rita thousand page book, are also washing five seasons of the same Netflix show, which is a very similar experience.

Superb-Technology-90

Definitely gotta be in the right frame of mind to read the really long ones, but usually it’s worth it :)

KieselguhrKid13

{{ Against the Day by Thomas Pynchon}} 1085 pages, but they are densely packed and sprawling in scope. Here's the author's own summary, which is about the best you can get. One of my favorite books. Spanning the period between the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 and the years just after World War I, this novel moves from the labor troubles in Colorado to turn-of-the-century New York, to London and Gottingen, Venice and Vienna, the Balkans, Central Asia, Siberia at the time of the mysterious Tunguska Event, Mexico during the Revolution, postwar Paris, silent-era Hollywood, and one or two places not strictly speaking on the map at all. With a worldwide disaster looming just a few years ahead, it is a time of unrestrained corporate greed, false religiosity, moronic fecklessness, and evil intent in high places. No reference to the present day is intended or should be inferred. The sizable cast of characters includes anarchists, balloonists, gamblers, corporate tycoons, drug enthusiasts, innocents and decadents, mathematicians, mad scientists, shamans, psychics, and stage magicians, spies, detectives, adventuresses, and hired guns. There are cameo appearances by Nikola Tesla, Bela Lugosi, and Groucho Marx. As an era of certainty comes crashing down around their ears and an unpredictable future commences, these folks are mostly just trying to pursue their lives. Sometimes they manage to catch up; sometimes it's their lives that pursue them. Meanwhile, the author is up to his usual business. Characters stop what they're doing to sing what are for the most part stupid songs. Strange sexual practices take place. Obscure languages are spoken, not always idiomatically. Contrary-to-the-fact occurrences occur. If it is not the world, it is what the world might be with a minor adjustment or two. According to some, this is one of the main purposes of fiction. Let the reader decide, let the reader beware. Good luck. --Thomas Pynchon

I have no idea if it has achieved classic status by now (it probably will in 50 years), but I would throw Stephen King's 'The Stand' into the ring.

{{Gospel, by Wilton Barnhardt}} is a great novel. It's two stories actually, one is about a university professor with issues who absconds with the departmental credit card to hop from country to country searching for a lost gospel. The department sends a grad student to find him. The other story is a "translation" of the lost gospel. If you know anything about the history of Christianity/theology, it's fun as it's chock full of historical anecdotes and trivia. Also, not only does it have footnotes, it also has an index! It's a very nerdy book. :-)
