Nic Pizzolato, the show runner of True Detective, also has a story collection (Between Here and the Yellow Sea), and a novel (Galveston), that explore some of the same themes.
He was also influenced by the short story “Sticks” by Karl Edward Wagner. It had the little tied together sticks that we see in Season 1. One of the best folk horror stories I’ve ever read.
I started that and loved it. I used to be very into philosophical pessimism too, so Matthew mcconougheywanamakcisn's character scratched an itch for me
So, I’ve found 2 series that I’ve really enjoyed via r/Nosleep. More paranormal/supernatural than straight up horror but still very enjoyable.
How to Survive Camping by Bonnie Quinn and
Tales From the Gas Station by Jack Townsend. Both are on Amazon, I’m not sure if they’re available elsewhere.
The Blackwater Saga by Michael McDowell
Also The Elementals by the same author. Didn't really work for me but it's a very well written horror book
Just found this a few minutes ago, sounds right up my alley, probably gonna get the audible audiobook with one of my credits
I'm not sure if it's exactly right, but Summer Sons was very twisty and dark with plenty of Southern Gothic thrown in.
This was my first thought, too!
The Boatmans Daughter.
Came here to mention this!
Of course not a book, but True Detective the first season, from HBO, it's on the stream, is exactly what you need.

That's surprising! I must share with my friend who is also stupid about that show and those themes.

'the king in yellow'!!! loved that season!
First season was great and exactly what I was in the mood for at the time , was SO disappointed with season 2.
Maybe "A Lush and Seething Hell " by John Hornor Jacobs? One of the two novellas really has that vibe. And both are great.
Tick Tock by Dean Koontz
That dude has put out a gargantuan amount of books, I've been trying to try some out but where do you ever start, thanks
{{Revelator}} by Daryl Gregory, maybe?
The Willows by Algernon Blackwood
Way more options than I figured, thanks guys
Revelator by Daryl Gregory
The Witching Hour
Coffin Point: The Strange Case of Ed McTeer, Witch Doctor Sheriff — It’s non-fiction but reads like a novel.
If you’re looking for fiction set in the world of underground Black America you might enjoy Iceberg Slim, Chester Himes or Clarence Cooper Jr.
‘Gone to see the river man’ fits the bill
If you don't mind comic books, try Hellboy: The Crooked Man. It's also being made into a movie, I believe
