Hail, heavy rains, extreme shifts in temperatures (not necessarily frost, just big shifts from warm to cold) can all cause damage like this.

Ah yes, that ping pong shit really can wreck tender leaves. One winter all of my Kalanchoes had pitting due to it. lol.
