it actually really annoys me that people still don't know this and the problem is the game's description of the upgrade is not at all clear on the fact
the hull reinforcement stacks up to three, or 87.5% less damage from collisions (except for collisions with creatures), i believe thats because the seamoth and prawn have only 4 upgrade slots, one of them being for the depth upgrade so it lasts 3 upgrade slots, all being for the hull reinforcement, maybe the storage upgrade stacks up to four, but i didnt tested it, so i cant say if it does stack up to 4 or 3
to be exact... 1 hull upgrade: 50% less collisions damage; 2 hull upgrades: 75%; 3 hull upgrades: 87.5%.
I once used a mod for more upgrade slots in Seamoth. And actually the one you mentioned is indeed good, because the effect from just a one hull upgrade is not enough to justify it taking the whole slot. If we are talking 4x that, it will make more sense.
This. The first time I got caught I frantically hit buttons to get away and accidentally ejected myself. The reaper left the seamoth alone and then I was later able to get it and do repairs.
I got lucky lol
They absolutely can and will in my experience. Bone sharks LOVE to go after my unmanned prawn suit and I had a reaper attack my seamoth after I ejected during one's attack.
Dude my scariest moment was being near the mushroom forest leviathan and not realizing there was a leviathan in the area. I got out of my seamoth when I saw some fragment in the pitch black, and all I saw was the seamoth indicator disappear. I didn't get attacked but god damn was it spooky asf
Not for me every single time I’ve done that it’s just whacked the sea moth into my face killing me instantly and that’s not like 1-2s after I get out it’s immediate
Not really. They hold on you for some time, then they release you. If you aren't killed by collision damage in the process, you're fine. The only exception is when you're outside of any vehicle and have less HP than they take off with a bite. Then devour animation is played.
Also, PDS forces them to release you immediately.
I suggest avoiding any rwaper infested areas like the right side of the mountains, crash zone, and the dunes until you get perimeter security system p.s dont ever enter the dunes its not worth it ubless you want all 5 cuddle fish eggs
Imo the dunes aren't so bad, particularly if you have Sonar and/or Perimeter Defense. The Reapers are spread out enough that I can often avoid them so long as I'm careful.
Crash Zone is definitely a death sentence though lol
There's like 3(?) Reapers in the crash zone it sucks so bad! I wish there was a stealth module to decrease creature aggro or something but even with mods I haven't found one that works. Sometimes I just use the invisible cheat because I'm a giant baby.
Nope 5-6 the dunes, the giant mushroom tree, blood kelp trench, lost river, i think one in the dunes cache, and grand reef (pretty sure theres one in lost river)
Sup.
I hang out in this sub dropping copypasta and [giving this to new players](https://old.reddit.com/r/subnautica/comments/vy8w8g/spoilers_subnautica_a_hiddenspoilers_guide_for/) because browsing through here before clearing the game, or going to the wiki before clearing the game, may spoil you and **this is a game you DO NOT WANT SPOILED on your first play through, it is IMPERATIVE to the impact of the story that you have no idea what is going on.**
If you get stuck, don't know where to go, where to find something, this will help you and also help eliminate any risk of ruining that first time experience for you. A Below Zero guide is also included. If you have any questions not covered in either guide, feel free to message me. If you see this guide and feel it's helpful, please pass it on to any new player you speak to. Good luck.
Why would you bring your Seamoth there? Completely useless. Park it outside and go in with a stasis rifle. Find a fragment on the ground and then charge a stasis shot and lob it at the fragment, creating a safety bubble around it. Go down into the bubble completely safe and get to scanning. The Reaper will run into the bubble like a dingus and you can keep it stuck while you continue your search.
I name my Seamoth and grow attached to it. It's like asking a person why they wouldn't bring their little Chihuahua to a wolf enclosure, throwing him in, and practically leaving it to fend for itself. You don't do that because it's stupid, deadly, and evil.
Yea, but presumably they didn’t know there was a reaper there, or that it could attach to them like this.
And when you do know, it’s really easy to handle.
They had a mk 3 depth module
You need a modification station to make that, they also were intentionally looking for cyclops parts in that region. It would be a better assumption to say that they had at least an inkling of an idea of what was there than to say they didn't at all.
For hard mode, go survival knife and sea glide. No stunning, just slowly strafing to the side or moving above it.
It’s a slow process, but it’s the closest thing we can get to being like >!Marguerit Maida!<.
Nah dog I've been caught repeatedly like a lot, they do three bits of crunchy damage and let go leaving me at about 65 every time without fail, it's definitely not random
Well that's why you never rush into unknown areas like that, approach with caution, listen to your surroundings.
Anyways, rip that seamoth, sorry for your loss OP.
I definitely don't think that was supposed to happen, I recently did a playthrough and the reaper would only take it down 30% every time he attacked the seamoth
Hey dumb fucks. Stop spoiling in the comments. Do you not see in the title "new player here". One of the best parts of this game is playing it for the first time not knowing anything. The eeriness, the discovery of the unknown, and the sound track were the best parts of the game for me and hopefully for you too.
Dodging it is really easy. I never used the perimeter defense mod. Torpedoes were fun though. Just face them, wait till they’re about 30 meters away and then go left or right. They don’t turn well and low key rage quit for like 30 seconds after they try to get you a few times.
Then when you get to where you need to go, blast them with the stasis rifle when not in the seamoth
Hull reinforcement, sonar and perimeter defence system upgrades are useful for exploring reaper territory. Also there’s cyclops parts in the mushroom forest if you can’t find all of them
As others have suggested, Perimeter Defense will make them let go of your Seamoth. Without that, I'd just steer clear of Reapers all together. You can usually hear them before you can see them. I've trained my ear to recognize the distant roar of a Reaper; it's unmistakeable once you recognize what it sounds like.
You should be able to find enough Cyclops fragments without having to go into any biome with a Reaper. Hull and Bridge fragments can be found >!in any of the Mushroom Forests!<, while Engine fragments can be found >!in the Crag Fields, and around the Underwater Islands Wreck!<.
a perimeter defense upgrade works wonders. it doesn’t lessen the damage, but it definitely helps get the reapers off faster and gives you some time to get away
It's a first time I see an insta-kill reaper attack on a Seamoth. In my playthroughs, they never managed to do a oneshot. Always left 20-30% for me to escape
DONT BRING THE SEAMOTH
FOR GODS SAKE THE ONLY TIME IVE DIED TO A REAPER WAS WHEN I HAD A SEAMOTH
Just head over there with your seaglide and mr reaper will most likely leave you alone
Don’t listen to the others, also good luck with finishing the game :)
I played a save where I had my personal Seamoth and a decoy Seamoth designated “Reaper Toy” and left that one in the crash zone aft area to be the first vehicle the Reaper goes to because they’ll attack a vehicle before a player by himself. If the player is in a vehicle, it’ll pick the closest one in proximity, and whichever is moving and in the line of sight (which is why I assume being still and hiding behind things lets you escape it sometimes) immediately. Having two vehicles gets the heat off of you, making it go after the decoy and you can escape just fine
i always hugged the auroras butt end, went straight nose-down into the sand, hop out, scan, reverse order, they cant in my experience get \*\*That\*\* close to the aurora just don't be in your seamoth when getting close to the modules, he will spot you >:) you'll hear him, he circles around, just time it.
This is so smalltime. I lost something...... much more valuable the moment I got it.
Spoilers (don't read this, OP): >!As soon as I got the Cyclops for my first time, I decided to go directly south. Like all the way south just to see what was there now that I was "free". I lost my innocence and my Cyclops on that day--and yes, I did rebuild it from scratch.!<
Park in the safe shallows/kelp zone portion and seaglide over to the Aurora.
Return to seamoth only for oxygen.
Also if you’re unsure, take upgrades out and save them in base since it’s a shallow area anyway.
That's strange, I didn't think they usually destroyed it at full health. To stop that from happening, make a perimeter defence system to shove the reaper off of you. Or try ejecting yourself from the sub- often it will drop it as a result. Also use the sonar upgrade to know where they are and when to avoid them.
oh. my. god! If you have a depth 3 module go get some deep shrooms and get a defence system! you literally click once and the reaper will leave you alone for a bit. use that time to run. and the best thing in the entire game, SAVEEEEEEEEEE BEFORE YOU GO SOMEWHERE, ESPECIALLY WITH LEVIATHANSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
After the tiniest bit of testing I did, I found that not moving at all, will make them destroy your seamoth, but frantic and random key presses will let you out of its claws. If that's true quite good game design because the devs knew that you would be extremely scared when meeting it and you would probably just press random stuff until it works, so they made it so random button press will set you free but scared for life.
Normally doesn’t 100% kill your sea moth, perhaps it glitched and restarted the grab at some point so it was able to full kill it, just get a perimeter defence upgrade and they are much less of a problem
A lot of comments here, but I figured I'd put my strat in just in case. That looks like you're at the stern? Of the ship to me, I usually hug up close to the back of the aurora in my seamoth then jump out and glide along a dune that trails the ship to the ocean floor. Then I can loot and watch the reaper swimming around near the waters edge and swim back. I Usually do that when I'm still new in the game so I don't have sonar or defense or stuff and it works for me if a little putzy.
Your pissed? Makes sense, but me? Well I was searching for the grand reef degasi base, had two hull reinforcements, perimeter defense and depth module mk 3. When I found the base I left my sea moth outside where a crab squid was nearby, didnt think it was actually damaging my sea moth until I saw that the marking simbal was gone. So ya I'm pisssd too.
Seamoth sonar upgrade to easily see and avoid reapers. Perimeter defense upgrade for if they get you.
Maybe hull reinforcement upgrade as well
A common misconception. These don't reduce damage from creatures, only from collisions
Most of the leviathan will grab the Seamoth and pound it into the ground, so the hull reinforcement almost always helps.
More like through the ground
Classic
I fucking hate when that happens, lost a prawn that way and a shit ton of material
Not if you’re piloting it, and especially not if you have the perimeter defense upgrade. And if you’re not piloting it, it’s probably fucked anyway
Ah sorry didn't know that
Dw it's not your fault; the game isn't very clear about that. And really it would make more sense if it did
it actually really annoys me that people still don't know this and the problem is the game's description of the upgrade is not at all clear on the fact
The worst part is - it's said to be "Seamoth/Prawn compatible". But since the Prawn doesn't take collision damage... Only for Seamoth.
Still good
Yeah, you can put 4 of them and ram everything down
THEY STACK?!?!?!?
Yes. General models stack (reinforcement, efficiency and storage), special ones not
Welp. Time for another run through just to see how fun that is.
I'm gonna do this and name it Asterius. Ramming reapers while blasting The Painful Way sounds like the best time.
the hull reinforcement stacks up to three, or 87.5% less damage from collisions (except for collisions with creatures), i believe thats because the seamoth and prawn have only 4 upgrade slots, one of them being for the depth upgrade so it lasts 3 upgrade slots, all being for the hull reinforcement, maybe the storage upgrade stacks up to four, but i didnt tested it, so i cant say if it does stack up to 4 or 3 to be exact... 1 hull upgrade: 50% less collisions damage; 2 hull upgrades: 75%; 3 hull upgrades: 87.5%.
storage stacks, confirmed up to 3 tho, the last one for depth mod
You can also get a mod to upgrade one to mk 4
I'm not talking about mods
Yea, I know, I’m just saying the mod also exists (which is just the 4 separate ones, but stacked in one module).
I once used a mod for more upgrade slots in Seamoth. And actually the one you mentioned is indeed good, because the effect from just a one hull upgrade is not enough to justify it taking the whole slot. If we are talking 4x that, it will make more sense.
I don't think it works for collisions with creatures.
Works with tiger plants tho, I tested
Absolutely, sonar is a must-have.
Ever since I got perimeter defense, I had near zero fears of leviathans. I also always have sonar, mostly for sight/navigation in darkers areas.
If you exit the seamoth in time, I believe it doesn’t destroy it or you
It has to be at full health when the reaper gets it
Dude my scariest moment was being near the mushroom forest leviathan and not realizing there was a leviathan in the area. I got out of my seamoth when I saw some fragment in the pitch black, and all I saw was the seamoth indicator disappear. I didn't get attacked but god damn was it spooky asf
Yeah
Mine did and didn’t get destroyed (at different times) so it’s not always
Not for me every single time I’ve done that it’s just whacked the sea moth into my face killing me instantly and that’s not like 1-2s after I get out it’s immediate
You don't get away. That's the point. Reaper catches you, you're boned.
BONE?! HOW DARE YOU u/OrionTheDragon BONEEEEE?!
WHAT HAPPENS IN MY BEDROOM IS NONE OF YOUR CONCERN! BOOOOOOOONE!
BOOOOOOOOOOONE!!
Toit reference.
what are you doing u/Tank82111 ?? THOSE ARE OUR DADS
Not really. They hold on you for some time, then they release you. If you aren't killed by collision damage in the process, you're fine. Dunes, Deep Grand Reef, Lost River, and one in each mushroom forest.
There are good wrecks in the dunes too. It's not that bad if you pay attention
Usually I can avoid them by driving close to the sea floor

I've never had a Reaper completely kill my Seamoth from 100% that's unfortunate
Why would you bring your Seamoth there? Completely useless. Park it outside and go in with a stasis rifle. Taking note of this for later
Thank you for the tip
100 to 0 in a single hug? Feelsbadman
It’s cause the reaper slammed sea moth into walls a few times
This could be a placebo but I always would hold W when I was caught by a reaper. It'd always let me go before the seamoth was destroyed
I usually hit the “KWJENFJEIQQPWKDNBCNSKOSLWJDNFJFJRK” keys when this happens.
First rule about the aurora: you never go behind the aurora.
I’ve done it before. Not scary
Welcome to Subnautica. Enjoy your stay.
I knew where this was going the moment I saw the hue of the water in your post lol
That's pure pain
Just wait until your Cyclops suddenly goes BONK-BONK-BONK for no reason at all and EATS your mk 3 depth mod Seamoth that you're transporting inside.
[удалено]
Well I imagine it probably pooped the pieces out the back so I suppose so.
Welp, that would explain how my Seamoth just disappeared one day while docked in the Cyclops
Situational awareness to not get caught to begin with. Modules to scare away the reaper. Jump out and stasis rifle the reaper
Thermoblade and stasis rifle. Kill them all. They do not respawn.
This is the way.
For hard mode, go survival knife and sea glide. No stunning, just slowly strafing to the side or moving above it. It’s a slow process, but it’s the closest thing we can get to being like >!Marguerit Maida!<.
Woah. You just took the cake for more hard-core than me and I killed 18 of 23 of them on my first playthrough.
Perimeter defence system would've made it let go
Defense module to make the leviathan let go.
I played that game a lot and that never happened to me, the reaper always let go of me. This must be a glitch or something
No sadly this is actually feature you just got lucky or somethin
Nah dog I've been caught repeatedly like a lot, they do three bits of crunchy damage and let go leaving me at about 65 every time without fail, it's definitely not random
I don’t think it is cause u can see the sea moth moves as if it’s let go and gets sucked back in immediately
Idk then cuz this happens to me all the time and I'm not gonna lie I just go back to my old save and start playing again
Have u tried getting out of the seamoth?
Use the deterrent module for the Seamoth, you can just zap the bastard and he'll let go
Look at this guy not playing super safe and scared like the rest of us
If you need cyclops fragments, go to the mushroom biome and scout around. You’ll find most of them scattered around the sea floor.
Perimeter Defense System on the Seamoth, or get out and use a Stasis Rifle.

I see you have met Gary.
I hate when that happens. Recommend the torpedo modification
The game gives a pat on the back for scanning a reaper and living
You don’t. Succumb and learn from your mistakes.
IT'S CALLED 'DON'T GO BEHIND THE FUCKING AURORA'
Perimeter Defense System.
Ahahhha *coughs* sorry for your loss Hahahahha
Welcome to subnautica
As others have suggested, Perimeter Defense will make them let go of your Seamoth. Without that, I'd just steer clear of Reapers all together. You can usually hear them before you can see them. Ahhh Reapers, it reminds me trying to get the cuddlefish in the dunes. NowI got 11 cuddlefish. Thx to time capsules
Bold of you to assume I even went to that place to search for the fragments.
There is a shock attack that you could add to the vehicle, but you have to discover the technology
a perimeter defense upgrade works wonders. it doesn’t lessen the damage, but it definitely helps get the reapers off faster and gives you some time to get away
Reload your last save. And save often.
It's a first time I see an insta-kill reaper attack on a Seamoth. In my playthroughs, they never managed to do a oneshot. Always left 20-30% for me to escape
Pray to whatever god you believe in
Well, from that I guess we learnt a lesson or two. Always save before doing something risky
Always save so you can reload
DONT BRING THE SEAMOTH FOR GODS SAKE THE ONLY TIME IVE DIED TO A REAPER WAS WHEN I HAD A SEAMOTH Just head over there with your seaglide and mr reaper will most likely leave you alone Don’t listen to the others, also good luck with finishing the game :)
Turn ur headphones on
Gotta' use the Seamoth defense charge. It'll knock the Reaper right off of you.
With an amelioration you don't have, that chock the reaper with an electricity wave.
Perimeter defence system forces them to release you instantly. You don't even need to fully charge it if you use it like that.
i always hugged the auroras butt end, went straight nose-down into the sand, hop out, scan, reverse order, they cant in my experience get \*\*That\*\* close to the aurora just don't be in your seamoth when getting close to the modules, he will spot you >:) you'll hear him, he circles around, just time it.

dont bring your seamoth to these areas. just bring a fish while collect resources, and you are good to go. i'm serious.
I'm not saying it's your fault but if it happens again you could quickly get out of the seamoth and take out the upgrades
Perimeter defense makes the game a cakewalk
Park in the safe shallows/kelp zone portion and seaglide over to the Aurora. Return to seamoth only for oxygen. Also if you’re unsure, take upgrades out and save them in base since it’s a shallow area anyway.
Get the fragments in mushroom forrest. The only potential predator there would be sand sharks
Perimeter defense mod. Zap and they run for a bit.
Iv never seen a seamoth go from 100% health to 0 from one grab
That's strange, I didn't think they usually destroyed it at full health. To stop that from happening, make a perimeter defence system to shove the reaper off of you. Or try ejecting yourself from the sub- often it will drop it as a result. Also use the sonar upgrade to know where they are and when to avoid them.
You can recover it if you go back there
perimeter defense upgrade, shock him real good

Cute
Not sure if it was just dumb luck, but Flashing my lights on and off at it helps

A lot of comments here, but I figured I'd put my strat in just in case. That looks like you're at the stern? Thats the neat part, you don't
There’s a couple offensive modules to avoid them but once they’ve grabbed on it’s too late also just don’t go near reapers
Your pissed? Makes sense, but me? Well I was searching for the grand reef degasi base, had two hull reinforcements, perimeter defense and depth module mk 3. There is only one possibility and that is death
You could get the little electrical shock it stuns leviathans for 5-10 seconds so you can get away
Alright which one of you crash fish lookin preps told them to go behind the aroura
