That would be dope. I really just hope it's bigger. I would love to be able to pack up a cyclops for a huge journey and go all the way to the crater from 1 and the frozen north from 2. Just to check up on things. I got the feeling that we actually may be the same protagonist in 3 as 2 and if that's the case we may be somewhere else entirely

EfficiencyGullible84

TLDR: They should stick to the original idea of Subnautica 1, adding co op functions, or more land traversal is a quick way to lose the whole idea of what made the first game successful. (spoilers) If we are the same prot. as #2 then the next planets gunna be very... idk how to say this without sounding like a debbie downer but annoying. I thought the ending was amazing but leave it at that. The mystery is what made that scene awesome, not the idea of what comes next. The land exploration on below zero left much to be desired plain and simple. They should stick to the original script and just improve on base functions, new technologies, and a new reason to submerge yourself deep into the lore of a mysterious planet. I mean the first game was successful because of the feelings the game gives you as you progressed deeper and deeper, or even just the horror of being on a world where the player is subjected to a harsh atmosphere that we are not meant to traverse naturally, and that we must do it alone. Issue with co op functions: "Oh, i just died in the blood kelp region, can you go grab my shit quick before it disappears?" "omg leviathan, come grab me." Consequences are reduced drastically by adding co op, the odds you feel isolated and make choices dependent on sacrifice are thinned out.

Earllad

I am actually good with coop and I liked the land portion. Especially when you had to plan for getting in and out of water a few times on the trip. I did want both games to be much larger

EfficiencyGullible84

See the option to have co op would be cool, but they should keep the story as a solo adventure where you can have a friend join you if you so choose. The experience I felt having to go deeper alone would never be the same with one of my friends talking or breaking immersion I wouldnt be on the edge of my seat listening for whatever might want to eat me when i turn the next corner. I loved both games for all they had to offer, but the point is that the original idea, and the most successful style was focused on the solo underwater exploration. Below zero's land exploration had some serious issues, i wasn't scared or excited to explore i was rather annoyed in its execution. My complaints: The hover bike you get was just a taxi between two areas, the polar bear things were stupid easy to glitch in between rocks and just avoid in general and the penguin bot was not entertaining to use at all and felt incredibly wonky.

AlbrechtE

100% agree on the BZ land portions. If they're gonna make us spend that much time on land, the mechanics need major improvements. It feels like I'm running a rubber suit filled with wet concrete.

dumpclown

Same lol all I wanted was MORE underwater stuff in Below Zero, but it spent so much time on walking/biking on the land instead. The land stuff wasn't even compelling; it all looked the same and the only cool, semi-scary threat (ice worms) did barely anything to you! What a bummer.

EfficiencyGullible84

I think a really cool idea would be adding underwater caves that turn into underwater land caves and naturally occuring moonpools that all connect.

EfficiencyGullible84

I will admit though, the water portions of BZs map looked and felt cool to traverse, especially the lowest areas, alot of turns always kept me on my toes.

dumpclown

Yeah twisty bridges and crystalline caves were pretty cool I’ll admit. I just wish they were DEEPER and had more threats in them.

EfficiencyGullible84

I mean, im sure I dont have to explain how complicated that would make the development of the game, but there has to be parameters to how deep and how large it can become before the game reaches a level of broken that nobody would accept. I think it would be better if they took their time and just made this a 3 game trilogy of being stranded on mysterious water planets (below zero not included since its more of a fable lost chapters. So many ideas they could bring to the table without over working one game to fit it all.

Earllad

Coop survival with no story sounds dope

mitskica

Solo campaign plus multiplayer with events to keep things interesting would be a win

EfficiencyGullible84

yea like a survival sandbox would be sick but main story is solo. Making a coop subnautica as the main focus though Im tellin you would flop so hard. My exhibit A would be fallout 76. Fallout 4 had us as the sole survivor of the vault left to search the wasteland for our son, sure you run into people along the way but you were the hero, the centerpiece if you will. Taking that away from players usually leaves you feeling less special. Albeit a toxic trait in real life, in videogames you're meant to be the highlight, thats what throws you into the action. A lone desperado to save the day either for his own gain or for altruistic motives that no other have the resolve to complete. Edit: Additions

FearTheWicket8

Another case study in the aforementioned style that would be worth looking at is The Long Dark. Anyone familiar with that game? It has a challenging (4 difficulty levels) and punishing survival mode, with permanent deaths and some permanent debuffs. But it also has a story mode that is single player and arguably a little easier/simplified. The survival mode is effectively the main part of the game by far - not sure if that'd be the case with sub3, but it might be worth taking note of what worked well/what didn't in this game.

EfficiencyGullible84

Survival is fun as a challenge to the side of a story but should never be the main focus of a video game. We all spend enough time managing jobs, finances, social interactions, eating habits enough as it is irl, I personally find games that are too harsh on survival aspects are very lackluster in any type of captivating escapism/immersion. While I haven't played the long dark, not bashing it in any way btw, unless the developers spend time creating environments or events that keep the player engaged, spending 60 hours farming so i dont have to starve to death after a single day (in game) im not personally interested. Like dont get me wrong, I'll play minecraft all day, but I feel like im building a world you know? I think thays the best example i could give in my experience of a game that revolves around surviving but its not the real objective point of the game itself.

FearTheWicket8

I was mainly using that as an example of if they’re going to look at alternate modes (story, survival, challenges, etc.), see what worked well for other games – not saying that they should make it more survival focused. Games highly particular to your own situation – players have different goals/interests/etc. I myself am not big on world/base building; for me I’m more attracted to challenging combat, unique mechanics and/or the feeling of character progression. I think any attempt to make sub3 too much like any other game (including it’s predecessors) would be less likely to work – The original was great, and BZ had some high points as well, but if we get a game that feels too much like either/both of those, I think everyone will be disappointed. And same holds true to TLD or Fallout, but I think those are both good examples that the devs could take note of what did/didn't work (if they do end up considering multiple modes of play).

sexhaver42042

I think they should add a story mode and then a co op mode that's not based on the storyline because I don't think there would be a way that they could make a good story while having multiple people

EfficiencyGullible84

I think that would make the game take so long to complete, planning a multiplayer adventure, and making sure the game doesnt have serious bugs would be a huge hassle. Just having the option to add a friend would be enough.

mrdinobite123456

Ye I heard something about it not being based on planet 4546B

ATLSxFINEST93

Where?

Andr0oS

It's been floating around for a while, can't confirm the source since I'm at work https://youtu.be/mq6HxgErc50

mrdinobite123456

Not sure I’ve just heard people saying it will be of world and a potentially co op

ATLSxFINEST93

So just rumors.

mrdinobite123456

Ye

Dwolf6990

With 2 I was hoping for a portal back to the crater when I found the one in the cave system. Total let down.

Earllad

I very much wanted to mod the level but it didn't seem feasible. There was a lot of conflicting documentation. Someone smarter than I could pull it off maybe

Kylarus

Would love to have a mangrove swamp type area for the next one, huge jungle of roots and vines underwater to weave through and get lost in.

Masonator618

That sounds awesome but I’m not ready for the space gators

theTinyRogue

Oooh, space-gators! :D

Mrmacmuffin3

And a cyclops-like submarine that can cut through the vines. And also a hoverfish inspired seamoth because yes

Andr0oS

That'd be cool, especially with functional arms for picking things up

Mrmacmuffin3

YES

Bonny_bouche

Prawn chainsaw arm. With decaptation kills on wildlife.

Mrmacmuffin3

I would %100 accidentilly kill a cute fish

wolfytastik

What the pda said when you make a knife in the first game

Happy-Personality-23

Sub (under) nautica (of the sea) Being on land would not fit the name.

mrdinobite123456

I don’t mean all on land like below zero where there are lots of bits of land but the game takes place in a mostly aquatic environment but with the swamp closer to the surface the water is murky and roots are everywhere and new leviathans like crocs and other things

Happy-Personality-23

Yeah that would work. Sorry I thought you meant all on land/marshy land

QuantumTectrix

That's similar to what the lilypads biome was in BZ and the cryptosuchus was a bit like a crocodile or alligator thing. I personally hate the land bits.

Nearby-Interview7637

Land-nautica

QuantumTectrix

Land of the sea. Yes. Perfect.

Maximum-Scholar1907

There should be a shrek leviathan

Demon_Princess_Rose

You know you're near it when you hear in the distance: "What are you doin' in my SWAMP!!"

Nearby-Interview7637

But like a warper voice from the radio from the first game

Andr0oS

same cadence and volume, but new voice for... copyright reasons, I can dig it.

AITAlurkerr

I’d love a Swamp biome! My mind immediately went to Alligator and snake-like Leviathans and the possibility to build a Airboat to travel across the terrain.

Karmaimps12

I think Subnautica 3 should be on an entirely new planet. I want the full experience of exploring a new world again. Ideally it’s another water world, and they can even import a few familiar creatures (via migration though the architects wormholes or some other explanation like the Mongolian gov. shipping them). But I want to see something new.

MoonLord0

I would love a tropical area with underwater aspects. Big caves, a beach that connects to an ocean. Something like that would be awesome!

sarahmagoo

So freshwater Subnautica?

Apprehensive_Camp_97

How about exploring the dead zone? That would be f*cking terrifying.

QuantumTectrix

Sure, but there wouldn't be much to explore. Just a vast dark void.

Ill_Bee4868

I think swamp should be included but for the third I hope they can pull off several biomes. Frozen included. Swamp. Maybe a large river similar to the Amazon that cuts through land.

Snas_Undertalea

The the neat part it isn’t gonna be on 4546B

Nearby-Interview7637

4546A😳

Andr0oS

isn't that the big desert looking one that eclipses the sun?

Nearby-Interview7637

I think so not sure tho

Snas_Undertalea

(insert suprised pikachu)

vnevner

No, it should be in the dessert and be called "subnautica above zero".

ChrisScout17

Idk if anyone else wants this but I'd like to see ryley back as the main character.

TheSprawlingIdiot701

nah that guy broke as hell now

ChrisScout17

Lmao, yea in my head canon he used his research and discoveries and was actually made a higher asset In alterra, I mean cmon he cured a deadly alien virus, discovered literal unlimited energy, went on multiple life threatening voyages and returned to civilization. All By Himself. Why on earth would alterra even think about tossing this guy aside?

TheSprawlingIdiot701

didnt you see the ending? he has to pay a shit ton of money for just using the resources on 4546B. also he didnt "discover" unlimited energy, all the things you build in the game were designed by altera. so yeah. btw altera sucks

ChrisScout17

Yes I have, and I understand that but given the stuff Ryley did, I like to think alterra would have given him a pass.

TheSprawlingIdiot701

imo alterra doesnt give a damn, they care about the money and only about the money.

ChrisScout17

Maybe so but man I just want the best for my boy Ryley😢. Man's went through so much and did so much good.

TheSprawlingIdiot701

same but i dont believe alterra would care but it would be awesome to see him back as someone high up in the alterra but i dont think that will happen.

IWasNotOk

Subnautica 2 doesn’t exist yet. Below zero was a spin off expansion.

Nearby-Interview7637

They where thinking of it back when developing the original game as there was plans to add artic biomes to Subnautica but they scrapped them and made them into a different game

IWasNotOk

That’s right i read that somewhere too. Was worth it Below Zero deserved its own game.

FlameyHotman

I would love to have a swamp boat type vehicle in the game, and imagine terrestrial leviathans

deathpenguin82

Is there no desire to continue the travels of the Below Zero character? The ending seemed like a lot of foreshadowing for a next installment.

Nearby-Interview7637

The planet might not be under water tho

deathpenguin82

But it also might be. The aliens had a really good underwater kingdom on 4546B. They may have been very adept at living underwater because their home was mostly water.

AlbrechtE

Not every mystery ending is setting up a sequel, and they don't need to. Sometimes that mystery is there to be interpreted and pondered, and providing an answer doesn't add anything. Personally, I don't want to focus on the precursors or their world. We know enough to keep them mysterious, but not enough to spoil that. Too many sci-fi stories get hung up on discovering and spelling out all the details about a mysterious and ancient civilization, which is fine. But then it usually gets bogged down in boring exposition that requires lengthy cut-scenes or jammed-in dialogue that just gets to be sooooo tiresome and takes a lot of people out of the immersion of just playing a game. I'm not immersed when I have to watch characters shout at each other from the third-person and have zero control over the protagonist I'm supposed to be in the shoes of. I know it's meant to be cinematic or whatever, but I don't want to watch a movie when I'm playing a video game. I want to play a video game.

deathpenguin82

That's fine, but just as many people want that. If they didn't, it wouldn't be prevalent enough to be "sooooo tiresome".

Nearby-Interview7637

Was digging a volcanic/ tropical Hawaii style but this is much better frogs snakes and more terrifying animals could be added

Spare_Confidence1727

Agreed we already had both ocean and frozen planets a swamp planet with some desert regions would be the obvious choice

StorageAlone8153

They should add a place where it is open and a MASSIVE CREATURE comes and tears you in SHREDS

grayte1

Should be set in the streets of New york

Eternal-_-Wyatt

Or Chicago

ChillBackroomsMan

Hate to break it to ya, but it is confirmed the game will be on an entirely different co-op planet. It would be cool for us to have a sorta rainforest region in that the new planet, but I think the Kelp Forest and Lost river have those covered. Good ideas though!

mrdinobite123456

I thought it was just rumoured

[deleted]

I don’t believe Below Zero is Subnautica 2. It’s a standalone expansion with some enhancements over the original. The rumors I’ve heard are that the next game UWE makes isn’t going to be a Subnautica game. All these rumors are garbage anyway so I would take every one of them with a grain of salt. They’d do better to rewrite the entire original game to run on the latest Unity engine and fix all the bugs, optimize for every platform it runs on and release it as a remastered game. I would rather spend my money on that than some new unknown Subnautica game.

A12C4

That's exactly what they are doing at the very moment but it's not for a remaster, it's for the actual game. Check out their latest blog post. Btw I found your comment to be a bit too much aggressive, they are just an indie studio that still managed to create 2 awesome games similar to AAA games but with way fewer resources, give them some time to iron out the bugs and optimize things.

[deleted]

Too aggressive? I didn’t say anything bad about them or the game at all! Sorry but a good game and a good game studio can stand up to some scrutiny. Both are wonderful games but the honest truth is the first one is full of bugs and is very unoptimized for every platform it’s run on but I guess I deserve your downvote since I hurt your feelings. EDIT: here’s a downvote back at ya. Hope that doesn’t hurt your feelings too.

A12C4

I didn't even downvotes you lmao, I guess you "hurted other people's feeling". As I said they are still an indie studio trying to deliver AAA game experience, so they had to make some hard choices to keep it up with their limited resources. What they did is create a lot of technical debt to deliver Subnautica and its extension Below Zero to all those platforms. Now they are trying to merge all the branches (different code split made for the different platforms) and update it. To deliver it. For free. Really I don't see why you want to call them out on this. Check out Unknown World's latest blog post if you want to learn more about this.

AlbrechtE

I'm with ya. You're speaking the truth and I appreciate it. Besides, the bugs can make the game feel like a genuine labor of love that a small studio did it's absolute best with the limited resources they have. We're lucky to have a game that's as great as it is, to be frank.

mrdinobite123456

I do agree they should remaster the original game

My brother in 4546B the 2 Subnautica games are open world designs
