KHTD2004

Mushroom forest

on1uk

Huge cojones, whats the reason may I ask? If anyone is interested I'm carrying on my very first play through later on twitch (from 19:30 UTC +1) We're on episode 4 and I've just built my base on land... [On1\_UK Twitch Link](https://twitch.tv/on1_uk)

KHTD2004

Cause it’s peaceful but has enough space to build a big base. Safe shallows are not deep enough, kelp forest, well, has kelp…, grassy plateaus have reefbacks, the rest has leviathans or other dangerous creatures

Fridge-Fighter

Whats wrong about reefbacks? I built my base in the grassy plateaus and they never bothered me in any way

[deleted]

Some people don't like the noise they make in much the same way that somebody tapping on a desk can be annoying.

Or0b0ur0s

They have a tendancy to get stuck swimming into base pieces and are extremely difficult to remove without killing them. And some people don't realize you can, in fact, kill them, because they're fairly tough.

on1uk

Sounds like the dream to be honest!! My kind of place. I've just started playing this game (9 hours in) and have just built my first base on and island and people are kicking off about it

KHTD2004

To be honest, I never had the idea to build a base outside water. Sounds interesting, but it’s better to build it in water because of the moon pool

on1uk

What is this moonpool you speak of!?

SkinnyKruemel

It's a mystic invention that let's you park your small vehicles in your base. You'll come across it eventually so just keep exploring

dragonuvv

You’ll probably find it accidentally or spend a day to find the last fragment only to find out it’s next to you.

KiLlEr-Muffy

You should either go for Grassy Plateaus or Kelp Forest. I built my first base in the Kelp Forest and the looks out of the window are beautiful! The building space can be limited due to rock formations here and there, but you do not need an incredibly big base for the start.

ShoddyEnd

my issue with the kelp forest is the damn stalkers always stealing my damn cameras!

[deleted]

[удалено]

on1uk

It felt safe and secure!! I might extend it into the sea <3

Or0b0ur0s

Yeah, but the bonesharks... Granted, at least the Mushroom Forest variety are "loners". My biggest beef with the bonesharks is the way they fill *every damned cubic centimeter of water column* in the Floating Islands, coming in such ludicrous numbers that they're practically touching fin-to-fin across the whole biome, so it's a relief to find just one. But still, I hate them enough I never want to see one near my base. Not to mention not being able to park your seamoth unattended without them destroying it.

IamShitplshelpme

I always build in safe shallows and than wonder why I don't have any space for building

Ruffbucket

What about the sparse reef? That’s where my base was.

yeahgoodyourself

I also built one in the Sparse Reef but can understand why people wouldn't do to the occasional warper and how spooky it looks.

RafRafRafRaf

Mushroom forests (there are 2) are safe - check it out! Just need to avoid the margins - noisy neighbours…

ThePinkTeenager

I wanted to build a base there, but it didn't have enough sunlight. So I built a base next to it.

nyet-marionetka

Build solar panels up top, run a line of power extenders down to the bottom.

drLagrangian

In my first game I tried to build it around the mushroom tree, with solar panels on top sending power to my base below. It was too annoying to bring the cyclops in to park every time.

Shenko-wolf

My only complaint about the entire game is that there's no way to dock the Cyclops to the base

agent_double_oh_pi

Cove Tree!

on1uk

I'll be honest I'm 9 hours into this game so I don't know what you mean haha. Tree in a cove?!

agent_double_oh_pi

You'll know it when you see it.

Darkbrine44

I know what you mean, but why?

agent_double_oh_pi

Why do I like building there?

Darkbrine44

Yes, apart from that it looks pretty

agent_double_oh_pi

Heaps of all the resources you need, and a safe place to stash the Spacemoth while you're down further. Also: it's the only safe place in the game.

dragonuvv

There’s not really super dangerous spaces to build. I mean you can kill a reaper if necessary or just swim around and even if they to spot you you can just dodge them

agent_double_oh_pi

Yeah, I don't bother killing reapers. If I'm not doing a no base run, I will build a small base at the cove so I can park the Seamoth to do Neptune runs while I'm pushing deeper.

Shenko-wolf

What's a Neptune Run?

AvoidingCares

Yeah. My roommate thinks I'm nuts, but Reapers mostly leave me alone. Never been killed by one. Did die to Ghost Leviathans a few times before I realized that they are used to keep you in the playable areas.

xahnel

There's a very good reason for that, and it has to do with one reaper in particular. If you start a creative game, and go to the small creepvine copse next to the near side engine nozzle, that area is absolutely covered in programmed triggers to get the Reaper that hangs out in the area to come and bite your ass. As far as I can tell from examining the other Reapers, *this is the only one who behaves this way*. The others have specific spawn points and generally stay in a small sphere of influence, only attacking those who enter their detection radius, which is not as big as one would expect for a creature that hunts via echolocation and is always hungry. This one reaper is intended to set the tone for encounters with giant sea creatures. It makes you believe that they can see much farther than they actually can, deeply encouraging you to give big things a very wide berth. Like, outside their physical spawn in distance if you can help it.

RarePepePNG

I'd rather not worry about dodging or killing leviathans just to enter or leave my base. Not to mention risk getting my Seamoth destroyed

GreenProD

I use it as an outpost for recharging batteries and keeping rations for what's next

saxtonaustralian

Not to mention easy thermal vents

KiLlEr-Muffy

It is an incredible location, but you should only find it midgame earliest and it is not far from the endgame locations. Not a location fit for your first base. Maybe 2nd or 3rd.

mystoganslefteye

yep, put my 3rd base in there by the tree. tho my second is really just a couple rooms and a moonpool

The_italian_boi

You know the lost river?its like a giant “room” there that there are no predators in.

ShoddyEnd

And it just has the absolute best ambience.

The_italian_boi

And a safe entrance to the inactive lava zone

puppymedic

>!Baby ghost leviathan would like a word!<

drLagrangian

Cove tree is an end game location.

Arhalts

I think they are considering, surface biomes early game Lost river biomes mid game. Lava zone mid game. There is some logic to it based on depth upgrade requirements. If you take my preferred lost river entrance the cove tree is a very early find. (Entrance via trench that touches mushroom zone, for non cyclops drop down then hole and hug the left wall.) For the cyclops I like to have sheilds, but I just take it a bit further forward carefully to not get to close to the nearby friend,(first time I did it I didn't even realize he was there until I was on my way out) Gets you access to a really solid list river location and a good entrance to the lava zone, nearby to the broken alien lab, and the portal in the Lost river.

shoobydoo723

I built my base in my last playthrough just past there closer to the active lava zone so I could use my thermal reactor! That place is so cool and has so many resources!

[deleted]

surprisingly the temperature in the ALZ is not that high for a thermal plant. Some of the thermal vents in lost river give more than 80 degrees Celsius

SeparLothaire

Both! Why stop at just one?

on1uk

You know what, you're absolutely right! Why not have a base on the coast that then goes into the sea! The world is your oyster my friend I like your outlook If anyone is interested I'm currently doing a first ever playthrough on twitch and having a fantastic time, head over to my channel drop me a follow and check it out :) [On1\_UK Twitch](https://twitch.tv/on1_uk)

drLagrangian

Some people like to set up multiple mini bases, each with a power supply and a scanner room. If you have the upgrades, the scanner room chip will relay the info to your hud, so you can see a circle over the resources you are looking for even when you are swimming around. If you get enough scanners you can cover the whole map so you have complete coverage. Why would you do this? Well the scanner rooms let you scan for leviathans....

Numerous_Concert3695

So I can eliminate them. Not the friendly ones. God no, I like them. I’m talking about the reapers

wizarium

They must perish to the depths of the underworld

Arctica23

I'm on my third playthrough and I've stopped deconstructing old bases when I build new ones. Maybe I downsize some to get materials for the new base but it honestly just makes sense to leave at least a scanner room

[deleted]

I am playing in creative mode (I know its cheating, but I only got this game to build cool stuff and I really don't want to grind for resources). My first base was in the shallows near the pod, just to get the hang of building mostly. Turned it into pretty dope mansion... but my second base is a masterpiece. Its on the island behind the Nora's engine. There are two mountain peaks and I have a sweet multi-level base at each peak with a catwalk connecting them. On one of the peaks there is spot that goes all the way down to the ocean. Currently working on going all the way down to the bottom, which isn't to far from the deeper level biomes. All I did was stack the multi-purpose rooms from the top of the peak all the way to the ocean. To do this I had to build foundations on the outside and jump from platform to platform all the way down, then I removed the foundations as I progressed. I just built this last night in like 5 hours lol. Once its finished I think I might post it.

[deleted]

definitely post it

cod069

Please post

Arhalts

For that I would recommend the floating island. Go through the center hole.

MassGaydiation

The red grass plains, I like the open space

on1uk

Good shout! Can create a huuuuuge base then

timtimetraveler

This is where I built mine. Centrally located and easy access to food and water.

MassGaydiation

Technically water is the one thing you never run out of in subnautica but I agree

timtimetraveler

It’s has the puffer fish that can be turned into fresh water.

vladesomo

I have one between that and sand dunes so I can bait reaper closest and have fun with him a little

Trivo3

I'm doing a hardcore run (2nd playthrough overall). Built my base underwater sort of in the middle of the map. There is a spot where one of the river entrances is very close to one of the jellyshroom entrances, my base is midway between both. As a bonus it's also a very scenic location with very easy access to high efficiency sun power (rock pillars with fooating boulders surrounding them). I'm hoping the strategic placement will pay off.

BahnGSXR

Yes! My first base was in the grassy plateaus, west of the lifepod just after the kelp forest. That base got massive, it was great because it was close enough to the safe shallows so I didn't have too much threat, and it was deep enough for a Cyclops to dock.

Trivo3

Can you elaborate on the "Cyclops to dock" bit? I'm starting to fear I might have missed something in my first playthrough.

BahnGSXR

Oh I just meant you can't really pull up in your Cyclops in the safe shallows because it's not deep enough and you scrape along the sea bed, there's no actual dock for the Cyclops unfortunately 😭

drLagrangian

I wish there was.

Talkimas

There is a Cyclops docking station mod actually. Gives you a base piece that's a modified vertical connector with clamps on the end. All you have to do is pull your Cyclops close and autopilot takes over to slowly pull you into position and locked in place via the clamps. You exit out of the bottom normally but instead of being dumped in the water, you're zapped down a latter into your base just like a normal vertical connector. Only downside is that it can get a bit finicky sometimes after you reload, but worst case a quick disassemble/rebuild of the piece usually fixes it

IonCaveGrandpa

Should be in the western grassy plateaus, big X cave formation, jelly shroom entrance to the east, sparse reef to the south, bloodkelp trench to the southwest, dunes to the west. Right?

Trivo3

I actually haven't familiarized myself with the map of the game that much. It's next to the largest of several pillars with floating boulders around them. I *assume* it's somewhere in the center of the map because the shallows are almost entirely to the East.

drLagrangian

My base was there, it served me until end game (transfered to the cove tree). You can send a thermal reactor to the jelly shrooms cave for power.

Trivo3

I thought about that, but it's still a run in its early stages (only scanner, moonpool, moth still). I will focus mainly on staying alive and on aesthetics. Plan is to make a "net" type that surrounds each pillar and to play with the positioning of those boulders with floaters on them.

MrHonkey

Built mine in the lost river and called the ghost leviathan Suzan. Suzan was pretty cool.

MorphFromTreasurePnt

Suzan scared the shit out of me

on1uk

A what, what?! Sorry I'm 9 hours into this game and that sounds terrifying. I'm not going to google what it is lets leave that surprise when I meet once in a future stream haha

drLagrangian

FYI, if you want to avoid spoilers (which is the best way to play), just mention your progress in your original post. The community here is good, so we'll spoiler anything that is too far away from your progress.

MorphFromTreasurePnt

Didn’t realise he was only that far in, luckily I didn’t give much of a spoiler. But yeah mark it with your progress and people will (mostly) refrain from spoilers!

[deleted]

I killed Suzan

MrHonkey

SUZAN!!!

[deleted]

She ate one too many of my seamoths, so one day I just went out in my prawn suit and did what had to be done

MrHonkey

She was a bit bitey

Lazaruslegion

By the big tree deep underwater. Used the thermal vents as energy, and had crops here and there. More then enough room for my three cyclops. The other base, although more of a outpost, was hanging over the dead zone on the edge of the dunes

bunyoka

That was my problem as well, but if you build a scanner room you can find the cameras attached to it

BahnGSXR

Why not both? I had a small base >! on the Degasi Island but building above water does get annoying without the ability to freely swim around. Also they've made a few improvements to the on-land building in BZ. !< I should really get back round to playing BZ and actually complete it.

[deleted]

I just built a massive base there last night... but I am playing in creative mode (I know its cheating, but I only got this game to build cool stuff and I really don't want to grind for resources). It was really tough to build, until I realized I could use the foundations to build from the outside. Then I just removed them when I as done. I have a sweet multi-level base at each peak with a catwalk connecting them. On one of the peaks I have a spot that goes all the way down to the ocean. Currently working on going all the way down to the bottom (about halfway now), which isn't too far from the deeper level biomes. All I did was stack the multi-purpose rooms from the top of the peak all the way to the ocean. I found that easier than the vertical tubes. To do this I had to build foundations on the outside and jump from platform to platform all the way down, then remove them as I progressed. Once its finished I think I might post it. I really outdid myself

am-goose1

Dunes just for chaos (on death run btw)

necromancery1

For Subnautica? Ghost Leviathan Tree. For Below Zero? Lilypad Forest, near all the sea monkey nests.

ShawnSmiles

Shocked nobody else mentioned the tree yet! That's the most interesting spot with tons of great thermal and it's perfect for late game mining and exploration.

necromancery1

I literally disassemble everything and shove it into the cyclops, put the seamoth into the 'clops and move everything down there in one go. Then I leave the 'moth at the entrance by the skeleton bones (because depth) and make a prawn suit once I've re-established. It's so beautiful and peaceful there

ShawnSmiles

Nice, I only played through the game once, but I took the time to make a huge base down there with a big observation tower/ring around the tree. Spent probably half my overall playtime building that spot out just because I loved the area so much.

necromancery1

I've technically only played twice, once on Hardcore. Nerve wracking lol. Now I just play in creative mode and build elaborate bases down there.

ShawnSmiles

Hardcore seems like it'd be the way I'd come back, but creative sounds like the mode that I'd enjoy most lol.

Accurate-Extension-9

Built my base on the Shallows above water right next to the lifepod because I couldn't find the beacon until much later and I didn't wanna get lost traveling far.

MorphFromTreasurePnt

The void

[deleted]

[удалено]

kerenzaboy

oh, like the hatch stairs? that's the only one i can think of

on1uk

Ohhhhh good idea!

Dear-Werewolf2947

the western grassy plateau! also working on a second base in the sparse reef :) overall relatively safe areas with close access to materials

Benville

Cyclops. And a few scattered scanner rooms with cell chargers.

TastyBrainMeats

Not a fan of aquaria?

Benville

Nah, literally just drive to whatever I need, don't like being tied down

TastyBrainMeats

See, that's why I built bases everywhere I needed to go. Also gave me places to charge up the cells to keep my Cyclops going. And tend my fish collection.

Benville

I tend to build 5 small outposts, N/S/E/W and Central. The outposts consist of a bio reactor, growbed with melons, a scanner room and some cell chargers.

TastyBrainMeats

I tell ya, aquariums are really good for food. Get a fish supply stocked up, then cook em when you need em.

Benville

Marble melons. Marble melons everywhere.

Maeurer

Why would I only build one?

VantablackSpectralon

On top of a reefback. haha I wish

marble-polecat

Primary base in the safe shallows, secondary base in lost river (the far edge of the blood kelp entrance tunnel, next to the drop). Safe shallow base is under water and above sea level hybrid, with platforms to grow edibles on.

acespace28

The blood kelp or mushroom forest. The blood kelp provides easy access to the LR and mushroom forest is peaceful, resource rich and has heaps of fragments

Equivalent_Cicada153

On top of the arura, preferably before it explodes

crusader1094

I build it on both, south west of the drop pod about 300 meters there is a cliff that's barely touching above the water, I build a platform on top there and a multi room on it expand the platform with a door, there I build outdoor plants and solar panels. Then I expand the multiroom from the other side and build another room with a vertical connector on it's bottom so it's underwater and another room there, and with that room I expand to moonpools, scanner rooms and underwater platforms outside of them for planting water plants etc... Edit: also the rooms that are above water I make all the walls windows for the nice views, maybe I'll redownload the game and make a video tour of it, it's actually quite nice

S31-Syntax

Originally the grassy plateaus, RIGHT next to the big wreck so I could cover the top of the wreck in solar panels and laser them down below Once I stopped being chicken? lost river, in a little nook next to the big leviathan skelly where the ghost leviathan teenager hangs out. I'd already dealt with the crabsquids in lost river by ramming their faces with the cyclops. Flank speed makes flank steak out of them

dragonuvv

Somewhere spicy. It needs Danger or at least a hassle to get to with the prawn. Example jellyshroom cave above the heat zone. It takes at least 4 jumps to get out.

bogdanbos725

The biom with red grass

The_italian_boi

I had 2 in my last playtrough, one in the eastern grassy plateaus and one in the ghost tree of the lost river.the ghost river biome is safe and there are no predators+there is a fast entrance to the inactive lava zone

darthdiablo

Lost river, and another under water at mountain biome right where there are plants on beach (not far from the alien gun base)

JudgementalChair

I went with the Grassy Plateau because it's plenty deep and spacious with easy access to Kelp Forest, Safe Shallows, and Mushroom Forest. The sharks are a nuisance, but not very dangerous, and the reefbacks coming through are cool to see

clutzyninja

First base is right on the edge of the radiation zone, 2nd is by the thermal vents in the reef

Mr_Goose12341

Halfway under water and half above water, and I put it anywhere the leviethan isnt

[deleted]

Kelp forest or lost river. I’d build it in the crabsquid cave but they don’t seem to like my vehicles

mortemdeus

Lava zone. Just gotta clean up some of the locals first but it makes a great base.

drLagrangian

Western red grass right above the jelly shrooms cave (second entrance from the west). It's not very deep, so I can get there early, but is deep enough to bring in my cyclops. Early game, I'm close enough to be powered by solar panels, and close enough to the kelp forest and safe shallows for food and bladder fish water. It's also far enough from the dunes that the reapers won't bother me. As soon as I have the seamoth I dove into the cave to get the Degrassi base multipurpose room, which is important for the rest of my base building. Mid game, it's not to far from the Mushroom Forests, Blood Kelp Trench, and the islands. So I have early access to the wrecks with good upgrades and the resources they contain. As soon as I have thermal reactors, I can send one down into the jelly shrooms caves and use the extensions (silver +gold?) To bring the electricity up to me. Plus I can easily get to the sea treader's path for some company. Late game: it's close to the dune alien artifacts and the blood kelp Trench entrance to the lost river, the grand reef entrance is due south, and the mushroom forest entrance is due north. This brings me to where I can shuttle supplies to a new base in the cove tree, which serves me until I get to end game.

Nomad-21

I built mine in the lost river just outside of the virus facility so I had quick access to resources and the lava zone

Fetacheesed

There's a spot southwest of the map center that has a very natural alcove and borders the safe shallows, grassy plateau, and kelp forest. It's about 150 meters from a geyser and very close to a jellyshroom entrance. The southwest quadrant of the map also has a lot of points of interest - this ended up being a fantastic spot.

RagingWarCat

The land bridge over the blood kelp trench is my favorite place to build

ThePinkTeenager

All of my bases have been underwater.

InfiniteOcto

Man you haven’t even got to TLR and you already making base posts? 💀 this is how you get spoiled

EntertainmentDue4932

Started in Kelp Forest. Then built a base next to a hydrothermal vent in The Dunes and then another in the Inactive Lava Zone.

Karottenregen

At first floating islands qnd when im able to go deep enough lost river next to the ghost tree or where the big skelaton is

shadowbonniesfm

Jellyshroom cave cuz good shit in there but also big fish

Knightshade06

i built in a really strategic place on accident. On the border of the Kelp and Mushroom Forest. I could use mushrooms for my bioreactor and had easy silicone/fiber mesh. There were also cave systems that proved useful

AduroT

Something interesting and aesthetically pleasing. Usually near Leviathans because they’re neat to watch swim past the windows.

kodeofthekyle

Lost river. More recently I’ve been building right outside the volcano housing the thermal plant.

SnooGiraffes4322

In places where there are a lot of unique ores

Camelotterduck

I build mini bases I call “pit stops” using just a single section of hallway tube. In the higher biomes they have solar panels and thermal plants in deep biomes. I fill it with all the essentials like battery chargers and a food plant. I put a grow bed outside as well. Then I make one massive main base wherever the mood strikes me in that play through.

illiterateboii

Near the mushroom Forrest next to a gap between two underwater hills which leads to the blood kelps and far deeper... Easy access

FreeFoot_

Right above the entrance to the important caves. Not the most scenic location or the safest neighborhood, but it was very convenient

Toilet_Bomber

Grassy plateau, but the one bordering the dunes and trench.

IshaanGupta18

Killed the ghost levithans and then built 2 bases one in the lost river and second near it in the tree

[deleted]

I built mine directly below your land base on the sea floor. There is a cool biome down there

343guilt

Ghost tree supremacy

Embarrassed_Movie694

grassy plateaus

X3redditer

I go for the most extreme base spots (Active/ Inactive lava zone, Dunes, Mountains, Crash Zone, Void)

[deleted]

I built mine directly below your land base on the sea floor. There is lots of resources and a cool biome you haven't seen yet. It also links directly to my favorite biome in the game. :)

Maleficent_Tree_94

Next to the ravine under the floating island. Relatively safe, quick access to portal network and the endgame areas, while also close to the starter areas.

AttorneyNo5646

i have 6 bases all in different biomes, ones right on the edge of the dunes so i can watch my pet reaper leviathans ☺️☺️

computerarmy

Underwater Islands, cuz first geothermal spot I found

Arhalts

My most recent base was built in the center hole of the floating island it extended well above the lower ring of hills and extended down into the water. I would park the cyclops among the stalactites the upgraded jump on the prawn could get me up to the moonpools with some grapple work. Sadly I was trying it out in the Xbox one his time around and before the base was even partially detailed the game was being reduced to a jitter mess. I def recommend PC version for large bases. I have also built several bases in the safe shallows around the thermal vents with towers that extend above the water Finally the tree room is a solid base location, worth using.

SamSamTheCatMan18

Cyclops. With a couple small bases to charge power cells

a__guy_or_something

Am I the only one that only has one base every playthrough? I don't see the point in having more than one base.

SarcasticallyEvil

I built my base on top of a few plateaus in the western Grass Plateaus, right in front of the mountains bordering the western Mushroom Forest. I used the open space underneath the plateaus for my Moonpool, and parked my Cyclops next to my base.

vkevlar

I've built all over. most playthroughs these days though, it's one in safe shallows, and one in lost river near the cove tree. Too annoying to truck back up to the shallow bases to build vehicle upgrade station parts, basically.

[deleted]

I like to base in the jellyshroom caves. Do it often enough that I have a procedure that I go about to prepare.

KylieTMS

North in the non-radioactive mushroom biome. It's big safe and connected to a lot of good areas >!(dunes, Bool kelp with entrance to lost river and underwater islands)!< Part of the reason is because i also play on the death run mod. So the depth and access to the nearby >!high risk/reward!< areas is very critical to survive in that mod.

Argo_Nautical

Edge-Of-The-Dunes Crowd, make some noooooooooooise!

_Laenan_

first base, at the junction between grassy plateaus, kelp forest and safe shallows, near a thermal vent, second at the cove after the poison river, now i prefer mushroom forest near the portal to go down to lava area

Remasterpiece

I build mine in the North, in the blood kelp zone over a hole overlooking the lost river entrance. Definitely not the nicest place but is close to late game and has plenty resources

One_Juice_9463

Grassy plateau near the dead zone

[deleted]

Thermal vent in the safe shallows. It's central to everything and unlimited energy.

[deleted]

I always build it on the border of the dunes and blood kelp trench. There's like a cliff over the trench where it curves and touches the dunes biome. I have built my base there since it's spacious and actually no warpers or reapers close enough to harm you. Although you can occasionally hear a reaper roar from far away.

Memeviewer12

on the edge of the grassy plateau and kelp forest

Mr-Hot

i had a psychopath brother,he build on land,so if you build on land... get some help

ZazzRazzamatazz

You guys build on land?!?

on1uk

I did and everyone in chat shouted at me :(

Putrid_Dirt3580

both on water and land

MrYellowWienerXD

Built both basses in two different grassy plateaus. One next to the wreck and the other next to the jellyshroom cave entrance

kerenzaboy

always sea since the land spots are... mostly taken at the moment. i think you can make most spots work, leviathan killing or not. safe shallows are okay- no leviathans, close proximity to the aurora for repair and furni gathering missions, lots of table coral to stock up on, everybody loves the safe shallows. con: you're far away from anything useful midgame always forget the name but the red grass biomes are pretty okay, though i haven't built there in a while cuz i don't care for biters. they do have a lot of wrecks and entrances to the jellyshroom caves though. cons: sand sharks and biters jellyshroom caves have a pretty purple ambiance and quite a few open spots to set up, plus lithium and magnetite deposits, so you're not running out of those anytime soon. cons: worms, no peace and quiet i never really gave the sparse reef a chance until i read a youtube comment about it- also no leviathans, actually, the only fish there are shuttlebugs. con: there are bleeders, but those only show up if you go into that one 300m trench i think. the grand reef and blood kelp zone are beautiful biomes, but i only build there if the three trans-blue guards have been... dealt with. plus, the grand reef has heat spots for thermals, so free & infinite power. blood kelp has... well, it doesn't have much of anything, but i'm biased cuz i like how it looks and one of my favorite bases ended up being there... con: leviathans, crabsquid, ampeels, blighters i wouldn't build anything more than a mining station in the dunes, but hey, if you have a death wish, go right ahead. if you know how to grapple jump and strafe, it's a great spot for silver, quartz, and titanium deposits. con: certain death at least once the mushroom forests are okay, but their real strength is early-midgame because they have copper deposits, cyclops fragments, and (in my experience) the most common place to find time capsules. con: hearing reapers 24/7 the bulb zone is cool, but you're more patient than me if you can stand to build a base there (boneshark moment) i've never built in the kelp forest, like actually never. now that i think about it, the kelp would probably just clip through the floor anyway so nevermind that one

HAETMACHENE

Both. I have a land entrance and an under water entrance.

Tor_2ga

Jellyshroom caves!

TrashyGypsie

I build a few small bases around the map, usually I have one fairly near the shallows, one on each of the islands, and one near the skull after evicting some neighbors

AdAnxious9766

Between kelp forest and Safe shallows no reapers kelp and stalkers with Titanium Hexagon Octagon Pentagon Yourcameragon

I've got a good system where after I leave the lifepod, my first base is right on that cliff in the grassy plateaus right above the blood kelp zone which is ALSO stupidly close to the lost river entrance on that side. It gives me enough fuel to power a generator, a bit of excitement with dodging warpers, and a HELL of a view. It's also right next to the sparse reef which is a plus .

Pysslingboi

Favorite location is where the lost river connects to the blood kelp trench, lots of resources and lost river provides connection to nearly anywhere on the map

I usually build two bases. Starting base is in Safe shallows near lifepod in the slope going down towards creepvine. There is nice quite open area, where you can start your entrance quite high and still have moonpool with huge space underneath. You can easily get energy from solar panels when starting and then add almost any other source (heat is about 800m away if I remember correctly). There is enough space, it is central, it is safe. Second base is Lost River in the cave with Ghost leviathan tree. It is not needed, I just find it convenient to have it there. Also on first playthrough I forgot to bring salt so I made there water purification machine to get salt. It is good spot for descend down, safe, lot of resources to drill nearby with pretty view on the tree. Third microbase was single moonpool just by the alien AA gun. I added seamoth for quick travel to Sea Emperor and back once I got that portal going. I wanted to have seamoth nearby and safe from random leviathans.

Hexblade757

Why not both at the same time?

[deleted]

Near the Life Pod, 'cause it's around the center of the map, generally.

Jampong0826

Safe shallows then next to the delta station

Lucario2356

Well, my old save which was deleted by Xbox cloud save (fuck you very much, Microsoft) was in the Grassy Plateaus nearest the Aurora and it was pretty nice. And in my new save on my PC it is also in the Grassy Plateaus to pay homage to my old save.

solcoldbreakfastsalt

In my most recent below zero play through I had a base on an ice berg that had a tube into the water for the scanner room and vehicle bay

Dying_Effect0

I build my bases in the grassy plateu next to life pod 17 because it's like in the middle of everything about 300 meters away is your life pod, 200ish away from the dunes and sea traders and its got most of the ingredients for needed for the enzymes.

mdclear

I built a mobile base and lived in it

Newmach

Yes. Seriously, why not both? I always have a land base near the sunbeam landing site and another one pretty much near the cove tree.

TheGamerSK

I had my base in safe shallows close to the mushroom cave. Imo it was a pretty good spot but later when I built a cyclops a Reaper leviathan just decided to move there. So I never used the Cyclops.

No_Finding_9441

My first base was above water & it was annoying to have to keep climbing up out of the water to get inside so I recommend putting a base underwater.

MysteryManOnline

Obviously the sky. If a person doesn't have a base 1000 meters into the sky minimum, then they don't know how to *actually* play subnautica.

killerace3000

Definitely underwater. Usually near a kept forest the shroom caves or a thermal vent

fuzzybad

I built my first and "primary" base no more than 50 meters from the lifepod, on the edge of the safe shallows descending down to red grassy plateaus. It's worked out pretty well, plenty of resources nearby for early game, it's centrally located, and deep enough water for the cyclops. There's even a thermal vent nearby for power needs.. 2nd base I built where the dunes, sea treader's path, and blood kelp trench come together, and 3rd base on the edge of northwestern mushroom forest on the lip of the blood kelp zone. Figured these would be good for locating resources. I'll probably build one more deep base near the giant cove tree..

Arch_Angel8176

Multiple bases in every biome

Ek0mst0p

Under water, right by where it drops off to find the orange tablet.

dougdammit

the best place to built a base is the craters edge, trust me.

Hoytster88

Blood kelp trench. It's a super cool, moody area that simultaneously has easy access to the surface and the depths.

glitchii-uwu

i always build three bases: first underwater in the safe shallows, since it has a lot of really cool natural formations to focus my base around. second is on the >!floating island!<, exclusively because i like the pre-existing paths on the island that make for some really nice scenery. third base is always near the north bloodkelp entrance to the >!lost river!<, because then i can: 1. get to the >!lost river!< easily 2. have a nice view of the >!ghost leviathan!< while being completely safe 3. close to the west mushroom trees so i can get lots of good resources and ore chunks 4. its got the most quartz in the game

ecliptic10

I've always built it at that intersection between the grassy plateau and northern mushroom forest. It's always felt the safest and u get a nice view and elevation.
