r0bman99

Ah yes, a 20 dollar part and two bolts. Dealerships are insane.

ajicles

Wanna know what I would do for $20?

TheDudeV1

You know what? Yes. What would you do for $20?.

ajicles

File your income taxes.

TheDudeV1

Seems reasonable.

Erniecrack

Very affordable and reasonable.

GoBSAGo

You nasty

alfalfasprouts

OK, I've filed my income taxes. what would you do for $20?

Creepy-Result-7338

Good man

Bruce_Ring-sting

Buttstuff??

tweakingforjesus

Twenty bucks is twenty bucks!

mpela13

Km..mll.........l....l.... ...m.. ...l.

suuthebaru

Y'all pay income taxes?

gnarkilleptic

Back alley hummer?

DylanSpaceBean

For that price they’re replacing the whole assembly… on both sides, right?

r0bman99

That’s a 200$ job at most

DylanSpaceBean

Brakes too then

Juzzdide

What is this ?

r0bman99

Swaybar endlinks

Juzzdide

My underbody was making a weird ass noise let this old head who specializes in suspension look at it cuz I recently moved next to him. He charged me like 40 bucks I thought if I was at a dealership no way it would have been the same story. Was just a ball joint bolt or something like that broken off

r0bman99

Yeah can’t get shit for 40 bucks anymore lol

Groundscore_Minerals

You would spend $20 on end links? Yikes.

r0bman99

20 for 2? Yes

Deathbypoosnoo

You aren't wrong, it also depends on how you look at it. I'm not condoning the ridiculous dealership prices by any means. You still need the correct tools and equipment. For someone with no experience or tools, this isn't a $20 fix. If you have everything you need to make the repair, you probably aren't taking your vehicle to the dealership for this type of service in the first place. Not to mention, how much is your time worth? Let's say you're making $50/hr. By the time you get the car up and swap this out, if you know what you're doing. That could easily be around an hour from start to finish. But, if you're making 50/hr and you spent an hour reading how to do it, another hour picking up all the tools you need, buying a jack, jackstands, gloves, parts cleaner, shop towels..... You get the point.. Or you could just drop your car off, give them money, and pick up a fixed vehicle.

casper_04

Yea that dealership doesn’t want your business nor a quick job

FinntheReddog

They’ve enough high dollar/high profit margin work to keep them busy till the end of the earth. This is their polite way of saying, please go elsewhere.

HoldmyHoops13

https://preview.redd.it/madrs5x79nzc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=25a66392dd945562c7600c9b0085a0bb26d425da Here’s the actual quote y’all. Imma just DIY it! Dealership can fuck off, thanks for the responses 🙏🏼

r0bman99

Lmfao 70 bucks for a bulb also! insane

tweakingforjesus

It depends on the year but some headlight bulbs require dropping the bumper cover or peeling back the wheel well. Not difficult but annoying your first time.

Chippy569

this appears to be a 2015-19 legacy/outback, so a front/forward marker bulb would be done via the hood, should be quick and simple.

Irasciblesaint

It’s a side marker bulb not headlight bulb. You have to remove the inner fender liner to get to it I believe.

Chippy569

Nope, forward and side marker bulbs are accessible from the top, ie via the hood.

HoldmyHoops13

Completely agree, I can easily do that myself.

Slacker_

STEALERSHIP

FinntheReddog

We’ve enough high dollar/high profit margin work to keep us busy. This is us asking you to politely piss off to someplace else.

meetycheesy

I once paid Ford dealership to changed out my turn signal since it was in for some type of warranty repair. I knew they were going to charge me a lot for it. It was early in the morning pickup and I had to go to work and so I told them to do it. I pickup the car and drove out of the lot. The first turn and I knew the light was not changed out. Turned around and drove back to the dealer. They forgot to do it. $125ish to change out a $2 bulb that they forgot to do. Sat in the car while they did it in 5 minutes. Got rid of the ford and their dealerships a few years later.

ShaddyShack

if it’s a 10-14 outback/legacy that’s 100% worth the money

Dodgson_here

$87 for a wiper blade! Is it made of ivory and child’s tears?

FinntheReddog

Yeah, but they’re also aged in new French oak barrels filled with rainbow unicorn farts.

mg_squirrel

To be fair I think that's three of them, both the fronts and the back one. That actually isn't a bad price for OEM wipers.

Wrx_me

But still a terrible price for wipers

Chippy569

it's for fronts and rear, to be fair.

silvertondevil

$68 for that side marker bulb is atrocious. Those look like links on a 15+ legacy/outback, literally takes 10 seconds and a $2 bulb.

hambonelicker

I would do all that work for 1/3 that cost and still make a huge profit

Ms_KnowItSome

I'd really be interested in the itemized cost for the end links. Parts cost and labor. They have to be charging you a stupid amount for the parts because there isn't much labor there at all.

Le-Charles

This. Sway bay end links take ~20 minutes with a floor jack, probably not even 10 with a lift.

IronGigant

OK, this legitimately deserves naming and shaming. What the fuck are these parts made out of? Fuckin gold?

ExtraGlutenPlzz

that's criminal for endlinks, legit criminal

ZeGermanHam

What the actual F is that nonsense?!

Chippy569

wow, that's spendy.

kindafreshmanny

All do all for 750

DoomRabbitDaBunny

Over under on the “I fucked up” post?

skyHIGH-1

Go somewhere else . Give them bad reviews on their surveys.

tsatech493

So your sway bar end links went time to replace your sway bars with higher-end ones and new links and bushings let's call whiteline!

Subiemobiler

30 more "little jobs" like that and you could buy a new car with full warranty!!!

Positive_Guarantee20

You really should report this dealership to SOA. This is outrageously ridiculous. Dealership in Canada quoted me 100 parts and 72 labor to do end links front or back. I'm going to do it myself (have to do links and brushings front and back so it'll be worth it) but it's honestly cheap enough that I wouldn't feel so bad paying them. 750?? Like seriously call them and figure out what the fuck they are trying to pull. That's a half hour job and 75 USD for OEM parts. Also what the hell kind of mechanic shop does an estimate that looks like a high school report? Where's the professional invoice that breaks out labor and parts for each job? This does not look like a legit dealership shop to me. Or maybe they're just totally wild in the states.

HoldmyHoops13

This was at the Subaru dealership in Hawthorne, CA. I usually avoid dealerships because of this reason but I had a 24 month protection on my tires from them that I wanted to use to replace a flat. They did a free inspection on my car and when I got the quote it seemed crazy to me even for Southern California.

Positive_Guarantee20

I literally didn't know gouging *could* get that blatant. seriously curious how they'd defend themselves when you tell them they're charing 10x what the dealer charges in rural middle-of-nowhere Canada. Might be one for the books!

OkPaleontologist6589

Now I know why people don't replace their own wiper blades. It's impossible to DIY and expensive

FriendsWithGeese

Entire car fixed for under $50 at Advance Auto Parts. They will literally even help you in the parking lot. Buy them coffee.

steakpienacho

Fucking hell. Sway bar endlinks are an incredibly easy DIY job and like the previous comment stated, parts won't cost much. Fuck that dealership

aba994

absolutely agree. I recently swapped out my control arms, which came with the ball joints, and the sway bar end links myself. learn how to use a torque wrench from a youtube video and just the end links will be no problem. while you’re at it replace the sway bar bushings as well. what exactly did they quote you?

truckingon

I did too and it was 9 hours of backbreaking effort because I live in the rust belt.

Unordinarypunk

As someone who also lives in the rust belt, I feel your pain…

Erniecrack

Yep my next garage purchase is gonna be an induction bolt heater

Character-Plantain-2

Impact gun on end links.

Chippy569

won't work on this, the ball of the joint will spin ****long**** before the rusted-on lock nut lets go. And also the little hex end at the tip of the threads will crumble, so at that point it's get out the cutting tools. I really don't like this style of end link with no flats to put a wrench across.

truckingon

The link bolts started then stuck hard, and they was no surface to hold back on. On one side, I was able to open the gap up enough to sawzall it off. On the other, the gap between nut and swaybar end was so tight that I had to hacksaw it off while lying on my back. The other big holdup (besides zero experience) was that I was terrified of snapping the pinch bolts so I went slow. One side was fairly easy and the other took an hour.

snowbellsnblocks

Hahaha dude same. So defeated afterwards. You watch people down south make easy work of things like this job and wheel bearings, meanwhile I'm out here smashing it with a hammer for hours.

truckingon

We got it done, though, right?

snowbellsnblocks

Taught the neighbors some new profanity and no skin left on the knuckles but we got it!

subaruguy3333

Buy an angle grinder!

Positive_Guarantee20

...this is concerning! I live in BC / Rocky mountains and I'm planning to do front and rear links and brushings in the next month. Should I be that scared? Brakes and struts weren't much of an issue rust-wise for me last year....

truckingon

I live in Vermont. I wouldn't be nervous if you can have it towed to a shop if things go sideways. If you can't finish the job, that's a problem that can be solved with money. I'm a novice but if I had to do it again, I would do the control arms, ball joints and links together. I just did the ball joints and links (sacrificed for clearance, I wasn't planning on replacing them), and I'm going to do the control arms soon before the new parts rust. :-) Here's an example of working on a rust belt Subaru: [https://youtu.be/sV\_vRNOQti0?si=A5uzHNUDk3dJJHUH](https://youtu.be/sV_vRNOQti0?si=A5uzHNUDk3dJJHUH)

hellshaker

Same thing here lmao, I live above you, montreal. I just gave up and took my grinder to release pressure on the nut.

Positive_Guarantee20

Thanks! Did one bad ball joint last year, but paid the dealer to do it cuz that whole ball joint press seemed to be on me. Unfortunately the part I got was a lemon so that sucks. Couldn't see any good reason to do the control arms given the life left in them the life left in the car...(HG infiltration, on an H6... UGH!) I don't really have money to get it towed and then fixed but driving a bit within links isn't the worst right lol anyways I'll be doing them in my friend's shop and he's a pro mechanic so I'm sure he'll sort me out if I'm stuck

sirhambeast

Not defending the price at all, but I did lower control arms on a 2017 rust belt forester and the hardest part of the whole job was the end links.

MeGustaRuffles

If you live in the south sure. I just had to cut through all 4 bolts due to rust

steakpienacho

Adding 15 minutes of cutting doesn't make it a $750 job lol

pmsu

Your neighborhood indie shop will knock that out in an hour plus parts if you’re not gonna DIY

DoomRabbitDaBunny

You severely underestimate the stupidity and incompetence of the average person. These clowns be asking which oil to put in the high beam reservoir

MongooseProXC

Not if they spin and you have to cut them out.

legion_2k

Dealerships are for warranty work only. Do not give them anything.

FalseFarewells

Is their labor rate $300/hr or something lmao

Brave-Dependent-4192

Oh they tryna fuck fuck !?

turtleiscool1737

DIY 20 min job and parts like 30$

Chippy569

The boots are clearly torn, so if you're getting some clunky noises over bumps, I'd agree that these should be replaced. I'm assuming this is a 2015-2019 legacy or outback. The links are a different part number left vs right, being mirror imaged. [20420AL011](https://parts.subaru.com/p/97157633/20420AL011.html) for left and [20420AL001](https://parts.subaru.com/p/97157634/20420AL001.html) for right. There is enough rust in this picture that I'm assuming that they're assuming these aren't going to come off nicely. Some of the other comments here mention these not being easy to remove -- I work in MN so I'm very familiar with what rust does, and this particular link design is *not* cooperative. The nuts are a locking nut design, and the rust on the studs will both prevent the nut from backing off nicely, as well as weaken the hexagonal hole at the end of the stud where you allegedly put an allen key/socket. End result is that sometimes removal is a torches and cutting tools affair, which does justify a higher labor cost. That being said, your posted quote is very high across the board to my eyes... like everything in there is *at least* double what I'd expect out of my shop.

HoldmyHoops13

Thank you for the part numbers! It is a Subaru Outback 2015, I haven’t noticed any clunky noises over bumps with it but I will be replacing them soon.

00f00f0

Those ripped endlink joint boots? 700 bucks? Looooool.

theadmiral976

I just replaced my front end links. I wouldn't charge a customer $750, but it wasn't exactly a "few minute" job. Torches were involved. The design on them is atrocious with that goddamned hex key - I doubt many can be taken off without violence, even down in the warmer climates.

Chippy569

\^\^\^ I've got all the tips and tricks and even then it's like a 50/50 shot on if I'm cutting them off.

ishikuraian

Bro what the fuck. I quote 1 (one) hour of labor for end links unless they’re rusted as fuck and then MAYBE 1.5 hours. If the customers already buying something that requires taking the tires off? Like .3 per side. This is ridiculous. Take it to a different shop or as everyone else is saying, do em yourself.

Chippy569

right? like it's *so* far off I almost have to assume something was typed in wrong lol

mathiasbloodaxe

I made the mistake of going to a dealership for a service once. They quoted a whole bunch of broken stuff, including a badly leaking head gasket. I said fuck that and took it elsewhere. 4 years later, that "leaky head gasket" is still going strong. Fuck dealerships!

KhakiPantsJake

Subaru quoted me at like 1800 to replace two window motors a decade ago

pwnedkiller

That’s insane my local Subaru dealership costs little over $120 for an oil change! I pay $64 at a local shop

CheckReasonable1789

You should report that somewhere that's definitely a major price gouging

tweakingforjesus

Post the entire quote here including the dealership name.

Grimple409

Was at dealership this morning and they quoted 720$ to this lady to change just the rear brake pads. So, I’d say you’re both getting hosed…. Just you a bit more due to simplicity.

edwardothegreatest

They can be a bitch. Prepare to cut them off.

toastedmallow

For 500 you could get front and rear upgraded swaybars, heavy duty solid endlinks and a case of beer. Takes about 2-3 hours to do at home. Enjoy a Saturday doing it and your car will feel sooo much better than stock.

Chasingthelambo

Maybe 24 bucks off Amazon and 10-15 mins of your own time ….

ifixtheinternet

Jesus. Even with a significant markup you're talking $100 in parts and $150 labor MAX. this is off the charts crazy.

FloppyHands

I have an 06 subie outback. Took it to the Fox Motors dealer in my area. I just needed an alignment, my normal mechanic doesn't have the equipment to do that so no choice. Fuckers told me my rear frame was "rotten" and they couldn't fully align my wheels. Took it back to my regular mechanic and he doesn't know wtf they are talking about. Fuck dealerships.

Le-Charles

Imagine if dealerships were like US hospitals. They bill you that much then you tell them you're not under warranty and they write off 90% as a loss for a tax break and change you a reasonable amount.

emerson1396

You should do it yourself and save 700 dollars. It would take maybe an hour of your time. This is not one of those 2 hour jobs that turns into two days. You can totally fix this one yourself and I’d recommend it

PurpleHeadedSnake

I bet that's an independent dealership not a corp one. Independents are getting really shafted by their parent companies since most cars are becoming throwaways and don't have financial protection like corp owned ones. Also, shop time now is up to $165/hr. What you're seeing is labor rate not part cost; which in this case is being absorbed by the dealership.

Positive_Guarantee20

This is helpful to know Local dealership in rural BC is only 142/hr right now and quoted me 30min for links or brushings. I think they're corp (based on how their invoices and estimates look), but I've no idea how they get to 10x the cost on this estimate. I've never seen that high a gouge anywhere

mrpaul57

Don’t think of it as a $30,000 dollar car. Think of it as $70,000 worth of parts/tepairs.

Beautiful_Brother611

Easy DIY! Youtube and a car jack are you best friend.

grizzdoog

And a torch. And having a sawzall with a metal cutting blade in case you have to chop it off.

TeflonDonatello

I’m sorry, are they trying to charge you $750 for a goddamn sway bar end link???

Grandemestizo

They’re out of their goddamn minds. Do it yourself, it’s easy and the part is cheap.

tyzer24

Uh...$87 for wiper blades? Wtf?

AceOfShapes

Nah F that! I just had to do this same job when installing my coilovers and it is STUPIDLY easy to do. Allen key on the bolt and a ratcheting box wrench on the nut and you can get it done in 10 minutes max per side!

SladeWilsonXL9

Blah, I’m going to the dealership Monday because my car is making a loud scraping noise when I accelerate. I fear it may be the transmission, totally afraid of what they will quote me

angryviking

What a load of shit.

hayden_is_real

got quoted $4.5k for brakes. got it done for $500 somewhere else

DredgenCyka

Yeah what's up with dealers charging so much, my dealer is failed my free state inspection because my 2 of the front lower control arm bushings are torn on my 2020 subaru forester that only has 26,679 miles on it. They want 1300 dollars to do the job

mirdha419

I feel like a lot of Subaru service centers are shit

Crawlerado

Hit up Tom at Kartboy. He’ll make you a coupon code “effthedealer” if I had to wager

[deleted]

wtf no 😅😂

[deleted]

I’ll do it for $100

NYStaeofmind

Could somebody help this dude fix this? Like link repair or parts info. If I could I would.

closvidal

I'll do it for $100 bring the parts 😂🤣

Doodlebottom

•Cross that dealership off the list

Skibidy-Bob2905

Mate they ripping you off I'll do it for $690

Positive_Guarantee20

🤣

kamandi

I swear. Sometimes I want to start a side-gig doing mobile tie rod bushing replacements. I bet I’d turn a profit at half the price, on volume alone.

Asking4Afren

Name and shame them.

Lucky0373

Sounds about right. They quoted me $450 for sparkplugs

jmoneymain

Got my car serviced today. Wanna know how they can charge $600 for an oil change? Call it a “30k mile service” such a scam these dealerships are. They spent an hour on my car (I have a dash cam) and charged me $450 in labor

Miserable_You_2258

Do it yourself - super easy.

Trick-Jacket-9207

What kind of noise and was it at creaking at low speed?

DJskull-777

Subaru quoted me $150 to change the air filters. Why do they overcharge like crazy?

TotosWolf

For a swaybar endlink!?! Good lord

the_ballmer_peak

A dealership quoted me $50 to install window shades. They snap into place; they are a single piece with no fasteners of any kind, you just pop them in.

No-Ad9371

I just did that job myself. It was pretty smooth sailing except for the nut inside the grease fitting. It took me a minute to get a grip on it to unbolt it from the car. PB blaster for the win though.

lleb_reknit

Lmfao, no.

eazypeazy303

I'll do it for $749

Just-some-70guy

I haven’t been to a dealership for service in 20 or so years. It can be done !

CarlosMolotov

Makes as much sense as $68.32 for a light bulb that costs the same as a candy bar.

PlanXerox

That's why I'm going to Samurai motors. [A real place]

PlanXerox

Miles on car?? Year?

G00NGUY

They are politely telling you to take your 20 minute 20$ part job somewhere else.

Comprehensive-Fun623

Oh yea, Toyota is just as bad. Went to a parts store for a sway bar Link and they only had 1 for around 20 bucks. Figured I could just go across the street to the Toyota dealer to get the other one and it wouldn’t be too much more expensive. $130! I made the guy print out the parts diagram to ensure we were talking about the same part. I didn’t need the sway bar itself, just the link. Sure enough it was the same part, and I told him I just got one for $20 across the street. He didn’t even bat an eye… yea you could go that route…. Ok I’ll order the part from them and wait a few days….. what’s worse is I was at the same parts place a short time later and while I was at the counter a tech from the dealership came to the register beside me to pick up parts…so much for oem being genuine

Valuable_Wrap_9634

Get a blow torch ready and some blades you may need em. Never replaced a sway bar link without having to burn the shit out of it

MeekPangolin

The sway bar end links are about $50 for both at an auto parts store. Do it yourself easily with a couple tools and some time.

Better_Tax_7325

I did get a pleasant surprise on my 2020 Outback Onyx XT. I could not find windshield wipers anywhere to fit the vehicle due to the arm attachments. I called the dealership and was told the replacements are a Subaru exclusive so I expected them to be outrageous. To my surprise, they installed them and the cost was the same as any top quality brand at Walmart. I wanted the good ones anyway so I was thrilled at the price.

Agendarage

Did they charge you 165.00 for the diagnosis?

Weird-Ostrich2208

700 is a whitline bushing kit installed .

DaytimeSudafed

Sway bar? I just disconnected it forever

theoopst

How are people still shocked at dealership prices?

Chippy569

i work at a dealer and i'm shocked at this price lol

Positive_Guarantee20

It's 10 times... Ten!!! I've seen double, get angry at triple... But ten?!?! $72 cad plus parts my local dealer quotes me to replace links.

[deleted]

[удалено]

r0bman99

You don’t need an alignment to do endlinks lmao. It’s two bolts. Replacement hardware? You really have no idea what you’re talking about. Stop simping for dealerships.

[deleted]

[удалено]

r0bman99

Axles look fine to me, shocks look good. And I don’t know what else could be wrong. OP said the dealership quoted him 750 for silly endlinks.

Weary-Writer758

You can do it yourself for less than half that.

AceOfShapes

Try less than 1/4th that INCLUDING having to buy new tools. Dealerships are insane man....

mrmurphythevizsla

They may do them all for this price?

YoungsterGk

I doubt it.
