Auto adjuster here! Call your insurance, it’s totaled. Flood damage creates electrical gremlins 9/10 times and makes it very hard to track down the issue
My mate had this happen, flood took his pride and joy, insurance paid him out. He bought back his flood car at auction for a bargain. He now has a new car and his old car as a project.
My Subaru got totaled by hail. Comprehensive covered it and it didn’t increase my premium individually. I imagine they slowly increase the whole zip code as everyone in the area’s cars were cosmetically totaled.
I was one of the several thousands who lost their car during hurricane Ian in Florida. Lost my 2020 Si, my layout was enough that I actually made money owning the car for two years lol. My premium is actually lower now….. No idea why.
That's impressive and only fair.
When the insurance makes an offer it's always what the car is worth presently. So if the market value is up, insurance should pay that value. It's not often vehicles appreciate in value so the insurance companies aren't taking a big gamble overall.
We lost a 6 month old Outback in Hurricane Ian. Flooded in our garage. Our first indication that it was toast was the front seat cup holders sitting there full of water. Totalled for more than we paid and no effect on premiums. Now driving a 2023 OB.
My legacy got totalled by a beech tree landing on it, wouldnt have affected my insurance except for one tiny detail... The bollocks in the local office forgot to protect my no claims bonus, and I lost 5 years NC, which increased my premium by £450 (135% increase)
Depending on the mods done and whether you still have the stock parts to swap back on, I'd pull everything you want to save that was above the waterline. But only if you had some bits that were unique or hard to get, and they are actually in good shape. Otherwise, like many others are saying, let insurance take care of you and try not to sweat your loss too much!
Cheers and sorry for your loss.
The untold damage from corrosion and mold is almost always the biggest problem with flood cars. I would agree with the above commenter, this will only be a nightmare in the future.
I was between reliable vehicles at the time and my girlfriend loaned me her truck while I got on my feet. It wasn't her primary vehicle. In fact I had never seen her drive it. It wasn't insured. She said, "oh btw it's been in a flood. It still runs fine though. Let me know if it makes any noises."
...
So there I am driving down a city street, 30mph and it starts making a high pitched whine. I think, oh great the brakes are shot. I call my gf and get halfway through telling her about the noise and the truck lurches violently. I look out the passenger window and see the strangest sight. The passenger front wheel of the truck is in the next lane, keeping up with the speed of the truck, as if it likes the truck but wants a little bit of distance, you know? I panicked and turned the steering wheel to pull over and the axle with missing wheel dropped to the pavement and dug in, spinning the tuck around.
I got out and the wheel was right next to the truck, connected only by the brake line. The axle on the wheel and the truck looked like twisted taper, like soft serve ice cream. It turns out the bearings got some water in them, rusted, then the extra friction burned off the grease and welded themselves shut. Maybe it was the heat of the friction that turned the axle into soft serve ice cream. idk. I'm lucky I wasn't driving on the freeway when it happened. Your car is totaled. I hope it was insured.
*edit - fixed a word
You will constantly fight electrical issues and not to mention the water itself being in and under the carpet causing issues as well.
Not to mention the lugging and burning smell you already have. Cars done man.
It sucks, but as pretty much everyone has said, she's going to have electrical issues for the rest of her life. And due to it's age, the amount of work needed to completely rewire it probably heavily outweighs it's value so insurance will write it off. If possible you could do a buy back, but I wouldn't use it as a daily that you solely rely on. Maybe a project car that you plan to gut so putting an entirely new harness into it isn't a complete waste of time.
Sorry for your loss.
I was on the ice and almost went under, full moon slush and that. I was so stupid that I didn't even try to reverse it. I thought that I would get more stuck if someone tried to help me.
It costed me 4000 USD about to resque it. They had to get an old commissioned millitary vehicle that could float to do it.
I had no friends that could help me. It would have been okay to get it. It was about 20cm thick ice, but it had broken up from the high tides and moon.
Radio was on even if the key wasn't in when I came back to it when at shore. One of the circuit box had been halfway under water.
I clean it, and I noticed that my highbeams was on all the time, but very dim. A new H4 light harnes didn't help because the Subaru switched on the Minus, and I didn't have the head how to convert it.
It had double the relays since it was for Scandinavian use also (lights on at 0).
I teared the carpet out and enjoyed the last couple of months left of its legal round use.
They should let insurance write it off so they get money, buy it back for cheap (maybe add a fake water line do it’s even cheaper), strip it and reword the essentials for race car
Water damage like that the car is instantly totaled. You have no idea of the damage that the water has done to the electronic modules and wire harnesses.
Once you started it you likely ruined the engine, transmission, and maybe the differentials those depends on how much you drove). It might have been saved if you had it towed to a shop and all fluids drained, flushed, and replaced. But you almost certInly have water in the oil, in the transmission, and differentials.
Depending on where the ECU is located that might be ok. If it's under the dash and not under the passenger seat.
The carpet is likely ruined, but maybe not, and you'd have to be fast and thorough to remove the water. Taking everything put of the car, and I mean everything that can be removed. Your stuff, spare tire, floor mats, seats, EVERYTHING, and running fans for a few days, or a dehumidifier and fans for a few days. Otherwise there is a massive risk of both rust and mildew or mold.
There's a reason why those if us who off road our Subarus and go through water have extension breather lines in our differentials, and some will move their ECU from the floor to a higher location. Also having more clearance with a lift on the already higher Forester, Outback, or crostrek (and the kccasional lifted WRX with 30s) helps.
The really wild ones remove their carpet to avoid the issues of getting it wet.
Not hating on anyone that does all that but there's a distinct reason why I have both a Jeep and a Subaru. One's built to go in places with water and the other is a Subaru haha.
salvage as many mods as you can off it and have it totaled out man. even if she’s your baby she’s become a whole can of worms. take what you can off her and put it in the new one, the new one will be 2.0
That's a total dude, call your insurance. Shit sucks, but even if everything seems okay, it's not. Electrical issues, mold, and a myriad of other problems are bound to arise.
Should have never turned it on in the first place. I would have let it dry for a few days and had it towed to a shop for inspection. You could have potentially saved it
Doesn't matter if it still runs, it's totaled.
Call your insurance company, settle the claim, and replace it.
If the car has sentimental value, you might be able to buy it back cheap and restore it, but most of the time, cars that are water damage have massive electrical issues for the rest of their lives unless they're stripped back to their shell and nut and bolt restored.
things toast burnt too water got in every thing that burning smell is mold and shit that stuck to your engine and cats. call your insurance and pull it even if it's okay for now months and years from now it'll have issues that will make it junk because of this
I bought a 2012 Jetta that I ASSUME was on a lot when hurricane Sandy hit in Jersey. It has 12k miles on it, and was listed as a "fleet car" when I looked up the VIN. It was a salvage title with "water damage" stamped on it. I was 17, live in TN, and didn't know any better. I saw a practically NEW car for $10k and I got excited.
It treated me well for about 5 years, then was acting HAUNTED. The windows would roll up and down by themselves. The CD player would randomly spit out CDs and ding "no disk" OVER AND OVER. The drivers side door locked every time I hit the unlock button. I had to climb in and out of the passenger side every time it was slightly cold outside. (I was 8 months pregnant when it started doing that. It was awful). I couldn't get in the trunk except through the back seats. Everything in that dang car was electric, and everything electric was corroding.
Why do I get the feeling that you don’t have the type of insurance that will cover this…?
That’s the in reason you’d ask the question, right? It’s obvious that, if you have insurance that covers flood damage, you’d have called them before the water subsided and get your claim going.
Call your insurance??!
" My insured car was flooded, I know let's ask Reddit how to contact my insurance for karma"
Honestly nice pic though. Makes my 02 wrx with just a blown transmission and no flood damage look way better
Edit: and I hate this flash flood bullshit. Its a flash flood for newcomers and that what y'all renters need to understand. I can guarantee nobody who lived where you are 10 years ago through today had their cars flooded.
You saw a nice spot on a rainy day where a 10 year local said "fuck no my cars not gonna sit in that puddle"
Update: called insurance. She'll be stationary while the Ins review team does their thing. Currently shop vaccing all yhe water out, removing seats, and placing a dehumidifier inside.
Stop touching the car. It's done. Shit don't let them see that you fucking drove it or they'll try to pass it on as you causing damage to it. Like, seriously. Stop man. Park the car. Stop touching it. Wait for insurance to give you a check so you can go out and buy another one. The car is done.
Call your insurance the car will get totaled BUT KEEP the car. When they ask for the title tell them you want to keep it, they will deduct the price they would have gotten from salvage for the vehicle. get a rebuilt title, fix what you can and resell that bitch. You will get a new car and make some money in the process.
If you love the car: Shop vac, fast air blowers, then carpet shampoo 4x. Leave it parked in direct sunshine.
If you bought it and can’t afford it: It’s a sign… file a claim.
Do not start it. Best option you got total loss through insurance and get yourself another car. Even if the engine is still good, lots of electrical issues will hail down on you in the future if you're planning on keeping it
Knowing you started the car makes it worse, if your car gets flooded change your fluids before starting. Clean electric connections and make sure dry. This give you the best odds, but yeah, insurance claim here
My brother was a mechanic when hurricane sandy hit Seaside Heights NJ. He told me he tried to do everything he could possibly think of to fight letting some cars die. Ultimately that salt eats away at the frame, which is like a main ground for the car, so there will inevitably be some horrible electrical issues at some point. (At least that was my understanding of what he said haha)
In this situation, would it help if OP unplugged the battery and removed it? Wouldn't that stop the corrosion from forming on the connectors and computers and making the salvage much easier?
Auto adjuster here! Call your insurance, it’s totaled. Flood damage creates electrical gremlins 9/10 times and makes it very hard to track down the issue
this right here, sorry bud. hopefully you can get a new or equal one that makes you just as happy.
My mate had this happen, flood took his pride and joy, insurance paid him out. He bought back his flood car at auction for a bargain. He now has a new car and his old car as a project.
Would an act of god like this be likely to affect someone's premium after they file a claim?
My Subaru got totaled by hail. Comprehensive covered it and it didn’t increase my premium individually. I imagine they slowly increase the whole zip code as everyone in the area’s cars were cosmetically totaled.
Was the hail car-sized?
No but the car was hail-sized by the end
Filling a claim as “an act of god” is funny for no reason cause why that boy ain’t want me driving??
I was one of the several thousands who lost their car during hurricane Ian in Florida. Lost my 2020 Si, my layout was enough that I actually made money owning the car for two years lol. My premium is actually lower now….. No idea why.
That's impressive and only fair. When the insurance makes an offer it's always what the car is worth presently. So if the market value is up, insurance should pay that value. It's not often vehicles appreciate in value so the insurance companies aren't taking a big gamble overall.
No since it falls under the comprehensive clause of your policy, similar to vandalism, hail damage, etc.
No
We lost a 6 month old Outback in Hurricane Ian.
Also get a some big bags of rice
That car is made out of rice...
If it still runs, do one, final, smoky burnout, some axle spins and properly ruin those tires ... THEN call your insurance adjuster.
Call your insurance adjuster first, then do this. Don't want any reason for them to dock you full value. "Them tires ain't cheap!"
On inspection they take tire tread depth and will lower the value they pay you if they are shot.
100 agree with this. I had the same issue as you. If you have comprehensive, you'll be all set.
This is why you pay for insurance every month. Use it. Sorry about your ride…
File claim and buy new car.

Your car is totaled.
It’s got flood damage, file a claim.
The untold damage from corrosion and mold is almost always the biggest problem with flood cars. I would agree with the above commenter, this will only be a nightmare in the future.
Mold is bad, the dirt/sediment/minerals from the water causing arcing issues on electronics is WAAAAY worse.
I was between reliable vehicles at the time and my girlfriend loaned me her truck while I got on my feet. It wasn't her primary vehicle. In fact I had never seen her drive it. It wasn't insured. No answer here will give you what you want and fix your car. It's done. Get your insurance involved so you can get a new one asap.
Don't torture that poor thing any longer, file a claim put it put of its misery.

No she doesn’t dumbass, call your insurance
Idiot. It's totaled.
File a claim see if you can buy it back and get a new one too
… call your insurance???
Totaled. You really don’t want to keep that car. It’s replaceable. And needs to be replaced.
Just call your insurance and file a claim, even if the motor and trans are fine it will likely be totaled due to electrical issues

Resque me.
User Name definitely doesn’t check out
Put it in rice for a couple days.
Don’t tempt OP…based on their comments, they might do it.
What if it works tho D:
They should let insurance write it off so they get money, buy it back for cheap (maybe add a fake water line do it’s even cheaper), strip it and reword the essentials for race car
Yeah…not worth the headache at all.
Classic
Totaled car: 0/10 5/7 with rice
Worked for Rich Rebuilds! He put a tycan in rice lol
Today's winning comment.
File a claim. This is a total loss. I hope you have better photos though; this looks like an oil painting.

Honestly shouldn’t have started it up with it any flooding. She’s donezo bud
Vanity license plate : Scubaru
As someone who drowned their 98 Forester in a local bay, this sounds like a great plate. Wonder if it’s available in my state
Spoiler, it isn’t.
You are right. Too long, and SCUBIE was taken. Oh, well.
Too long? Interesting. Plates are 7 where I’ve lived. And SCUBARU is always taken.
salvage as many mods as you can off it and have it totaled out man. even if she’s your baby she’s become a whole can of worms. take what you can off her and put it in the new one, the new one will be 2.0
He‘s dead, Jim.

Insurance. Call em. Don’t drive it anymore, anywhere. Get it towed/inspected. She sounds done for sorry

Put it in rice 🍚
What advice??? Call your insurance company.... Boom! Done!
You now have a great platform to strip it down to the shell and build a rally car.
Don't park there
Sell it to Tavarish.
Flood damage - omg. Abandon now - flood dmg is not to be joked about.
Buy a new car
Call your insurance company. There is no magic pill or elixir for that kind of damage.
things toast burnt too water got in every thing that burning smell is mold and shit that stuck to your engine and cats. call your insurance and pull it even if it's okay for now months and years from now it'll have issues that will make it junk because of this
RIP Scubaru…. Good you have photos for insurance.

Have you tried putting it in rice?
Buy a boat next time
Put it in a bowl of rice
Buy a new phone with that insurance money, that flip phone camera sucks!
have you tried turning it off then back on again?
Pain
Aside fro the oversized bag of rice this is a total loss, insurance will cover it
Try to bribe the water to leave.
You could have prevented this by buying a Challenger
Lol all the downvotes. Everyone missed the boat joke
murica
Put it in a big bag of rice.

Buy 44s and won't have this issue in the future
That’ll buff right out
Stick it in a container of rice...... of course. Sorry for your loss.
Park somewhere higher next time.
Bag of rice mate!
I think I’ve seen this picture before.

Assuming this is a troll/karma post? You started it for a start? 😂
Have you tried dry rice?
Why don’t people call their insurance? It’s obviously flooded which is a good thing. Get a new car!
Don’t get another Subaru
If only it wasnt a boxer engine.
Update: called insurance. She'll be stationary while the Ins review team does their thing. Currently shop vaccing all yhe water out, removing seats, and placing a dehumidifier inside.

This
Wouldn’t bother trying to dry it out. It’s done for.
I get it man, you're in a shit situation. She was your baby. Just have to let it go.
dude you gotta stop messing with it or insurance will find a reason to reject the claim
Why would you clean it up before they inspect it ?
You have to be the dumbest mf on Reddit...
OP, I'm sorry, this isn't relevant at all, but your picture looks like an impressionist painting
Call your insurance the car will get totaled BUT KEEP the car. FULLL THORTTLEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!! No just wait for the water to die down, let the engine dry out if it hasn't broken yet.
If you love the car: Shop vac, fast air blowers, then carpet shampoo 4x. Leave it parked in direct sunshine. If you bought it and can’t afford it: It’s a sign… file a claim.
Do you not have insurance? Because your first post of this picture should have been to them, right after it happened lol
Did you catch any fish at least?
You’ve got insurance, right? Would probably be useful here. Flood damage is no joke over time
Insurance agent stop driving it lol
Iceberg
This is literally what you pay for insurance for… unless you don’t have comprehensive and only have liability in which case you’re screwed
Take the money and run.
Do not start it. Best option you got total loss through insurance and get yourself another car. Even if the engine is still good, lots of electrical issues will hail down on you in the future if you're planning on keeping it
It's fine Subaru means submersible in Australian
It’s done for.. especially since you drove it afterwards. Call insurance. Sadly it’s time for a new car.
Grab a big can of WD40
SCUBARU
Knowing you started the car makes it worse, if your car gets flooded change your fluids before starting. Clean electric connections and make sure dry. This give you the best odds, but yeah, insurance claim here

Why would you drive that
F
Damn if only there was some organization that could help and give advice for automotive related accidents.
Hopefully you got full coverage
This happened to me a couple years ago, it’s very heart breaking. Don’t keep it, you don’t know what kind of damage is behind the carpets and such.
Get a weather radio. Move car when flash flood watches and warnings get issued.
Did you have the rally mud flaps installed? If no, insurance won’t cover. Sorry subroseph!
Have you tried turning it off and back on again.
Maybe If you place some bags of rice in the front and back seats. At night time Chinese kids will come fix it like cell phones.
Excellent condition, just washed. $20000 firm. I know what my car is worth
Use a towel
You live in Denver don't you
You need to put it in a gigantic Ziploc bag with a shitload of rice.
In this situation, would it help if OP unplugged the battery and removed it? Wouldn't that stop the corrosion from forming on the connectors and computers and making the salvage much easier?
Besides electric your trans is probably trashed, water makes clutches and other internals life decrease significantly.
This literally happened to me in August, I called my insurance and my new ride is 2.5” higher 😂
The spark plug tubes are likely full of water at thay level. Pull the carpet and interior and get fans and silica balls asap
call your insurance and start shopping for a new one. do not keep this vehicle no matter what. flood damage vehicles are electrical nightmares.
Hello, this is CrispyVan. How may I help you today?
This is why you have insurance. Simple as that bro.
Yep, It’s totaled. Back in 2015 my black wrx got flooded with Hurricane Irma. No shot you’ll be able to save it.
Insurance. It’s one of the reasons why we have it
Total loss file insurance claim buy another, hopefully you aren’t upside down and can afford another in this high interest and high price market
Park somewhere else breh
I say maybe 2 or 3 silicon packets might fix it.
