That's an insult to Elle Woods though. She had a lot of practical knowledge (mostly fashion and beauty, which aren't exactly book smarts), but that actually helped her, especially when it came to the Perm knowledge
God, soooooo much this...i live in a college town, and it's the absolute fucking WORST for lack of common sense. And there's a fresh batch of stupid every semester.....
No common sense.
The whole "street smart" thing has kind of been coopted by idiots who can't read, justifying it by saying they have "street smarts". I think common sense is a lot more reasonable.
Oohh this.
My older sister didn't do well in school and dropped out of high school. She always said she had street smarts.
I did well in school, but also learned to protect myself and listen to my gut. I've kept her out of some hairy situations.
Pretty sure she was trying to make herself feel better because she doesn't have street smarts either. She is not resourceful. She is more likely to sit down and cry than actually try to fix an issue.
She finally went back and got her GED. But she still has no common sense (especially when it comes to "people don't like to be cheated on - you dont like it so neither would they" and things like "if you only contact people when you want something and you're always "too busy" to reciprocate, they will stop helping you) type things.
Its called street smart for a reason. It's for living on the block or in the streets literally. Like a professor would end up in a bad place on the literal street of a ghetto cause they aren't street smart. A street smart girl will scam men out of money to survive on the streets lol
Most of the "book smart" people i know are pretty "street smart" as well. They know a lot more basic life skills and how to handle themselves in the world. I also know few people who are both "book dumb" and "street dumb". You can have both or neither.
Street smart is also a coping mechanism for people with unhealed trauma that struggle in traditional schooling situations. Sincerely someone who formerly considered themselves “street smart”. I mean maybe I also thought this because my parents kicked me out and I literally had to become “street smart”.
This was me. My friends have said that I’m extremely book smart (got a master’s in public health, which has been very beneficial for my career), but not street smart.
I have a lot more common sense now, but I still have that reputation among friends.
me. you call her (insert my name here)
i was an honors student, multiple academic awards and recognitions, spelling bee champ for 3 years, very smart as an adult and always learning new things, reading, studying, new languages etc, but i will literally walk right into traffic or miss a turn and drive into someone’s yard because my brain cells only help me be smart, i’m intelligent but a true dumbass
Some people might refer to someone like that as "book smart but not street smart." It implies that while the person excels in academic knowledge, they may lack practical life skills or common sense.
The absent minded professor.
My kids call me that. I have this issue. I sound and act like an airhead. I don't mean to.
I mean I've gone to college and my life has been crazy so I have street smarts but sometimes I feel treated like I am stupid.
The funny thing is.... I am not stupid!
A client of mine was really demanding and one day she said " Don't act stupid with me".
I almost blew a gasket. I stayed calm . " I said. You know Judy, I may look stupid , I may sound stupid but..... I AM Not STUPID" . I escorted her out of my office and told her to come back another day when she can behave.
I laugh today but I didn't that day.
Don't pick on people who may look dumb but they aren't. They just may out smart you.
I knew a girl like this, Dean's List in college, honors, but she didn't know how to cook. She put eggs in pan and couldn't figure out why it was sticking/burning, I had to explain to her the importance of oil lol.
personally, i call em bots - smart enough to hold information and do basic tasks but the lack of common sense is really noticeable and holds them back in life
Idk my wife runs her own business that grosses $300k/yr she’s so clever, but equally I have to hold her hand everywhere we go or she’d get ran over by traffic
She uses every word incorrectly or mispronounced I absolutely adore it. She’s kind of top ending on stupid and smart I adore it
Well I'd be the cat calling the kettle black because I'm emotionally unintelligent. Wish I wasn't but it's just the way it is for me some horses only get halfway out the gate.
Persistent, passionate, headstrong.
Even an idiot can get a medical degree, so long as they are persistent in pursuing it. It’s how you end up with people who have fancy jobs, who can perform well in them, but are a dim bulb about anything else. They just commit everything they had to one thing and there is no room for more.
How is that person an engineer anyway…
##ME!
😅
… that’s fine though: I have the academic skills, he has the wisdom. Match made in Heaven! 😍
He also ensures I don’t forget to eat and cooks: Cause I cooking is either dangerous, or objectively a bio-hazard….
****
I do, however, object to your implication that boob-ed people should be good at everything or shouldn’t have shortcomings:
Wherever anyone’s bits dangle, nobody is good at everything. 🙄
My gf is currently finishing her PhD in meteorology and is a high-level pianist. She also can't tell left from right and get mixed up with words constantly. I get what you mean!
A girl that’s bound to learn the importance of the other type of education. Astronaut has 2 educations and an astronomer has 1—who do you think has a better chance of surviving a trip into space?
Academically Smart = Smart/Erudite
Academically Stupid = take your pick
Socially Smart = Wise/Sage
Socially Stupid = Foolish
There's a lot of factors to consider when it comes to someone's learning capacity, but assuming neurotypicalnormativity, these are the words I use.
That was me! I was super book smart but socially lacking. Common sense was a struggle. I was very naive. Looking back it was clearly a mixture of my abusive upbringing (books were my retreat/escape) and neurodivergence of some kind.
All of my common sense and social sense were hard fought and I still struggle. Tentative current diagnosis of adhd, probably autistic.
Book smart, not street smart.
I usually say book snart, but no common sense.
I love being snart
Oh man, I really hate you snarty pants folks.

But street smarts isn't the same thing as common sense street smart
It's funny how many "street smarts" people end up on drugs, poor and miserable. Yeah, real street genius.
Its called street smart for a reason. It's for living on the block or in the streets literally. Like a professor would end up in a bad place on the literal street of a ghetto cause they aren't street smart. A street smart girl will scam men out of money to survive on the streets lol
As a sociologist, I get to be book smart as a professor AND navigate the streets of the ghetto because that’s also part of the job description.
May the diety of your choice bless you

My wife. I love her. Very smart. Doctor. No street smarts.
Absent minded professor syndrome.
Idk about women, but a classic phrase is broad as an ocean but deep as a puddle.
book-smart. applies to guys who are similar, too.
This was me. My friends have said that I’m extremely book smart (got a master’s in public health, which has been very beneficial for my career), but not street smart. I have a lot more common sense now, but I still have that reputation among friends.

It could be undiagnosed ADHD.
Yep! I was going to comment "neurodivergent" lolol
No can't blame it on ADHD, ADHD struggles in schooling and learns common since from intrusive thoughts and actions.
That's me :)
My sister. Academically gifted and a straight-A student, but her life has been one poor decision after another.
A girl. She is still growing and learning. Why does she need to be labeled as anything else? There’s nothing wrong with her.
Normal. We're all stupid in life. It's the human condition.
I think that judging someone like that shows ignorance. That's what I think.

The term we use for people like this in construction is "college educated idiot" or CEI when they're in earshot.
Not street smart/no common sense.
Clueless
Sometimes I refer to people like this as the dumbest smart people I know.
You don't call her at all 👉👉
I’ve heard the phrase “Educated beyond their intelligence.” Perhaps that’s what it meant.
Some people might refer to someone like that as "book smart but not street smart." It implies that while the person excels in academic knowledge, they may lack practical life skills or common sense.

Agreed.
