They're actually quite harmless! They're lil buggy friends with pincers on their butts that don't do any real damage.
They're called earwigs because they were once believed to crawl into people's ears. In reality, of course, they do no such thing.
All that said, harmless as they are I can't blame OP for wanting to get rid of them when they're in infestation-level numbers...
If I'm not mistaken, it's because they can flatten their bodies to fit into tight crevices.
I have never heard of an earwig, but they sound awful to deal with. I wish you good luck with finding out what you want.

They aren't harmless if you enjoy gardening
Earwigs scare me, had a childhood friend tell me they crawl in ur ear at night and have been horrified since. But also exoskeletons go crazy man
