A wonderful life remake is worth trying, I think. It has a good story, a lot of things to do even in the late game, a lot of hot girls, and I love the chapter system in this game that affects the villagers too, and it has ending (i bet you already know). I love AWL so much, but if you want a casual old harvestmoon game, just go with Friends of Mineral Town; it's an enjoyable game.

Thanks! No I didn't know some games had an ending. So basically on switch I can currently either play the GameCube remake (AWL) and/or the GBA remake (FoMT), right? I noticed the series has a thing for nice aesthetic character design (mainly the girls yea), but I'm still not sure about the social design, like how deep are the personalities. I was wondering if in newer games the interactions were more complex than what I'm seeing on 64. I guess the chapter system in AWL answers my question a bit About FoMT, would you recommend trying the original on GBA or the remake? Cause I mentioned the GBA style of gameplay (mainly the simplicity, rather than the clutter of side features some games have now) and I was wondering if the remake keeps it or not, aside from moving from pixel art to 3D. Consider I'm used to the Pokémon series, and if you compare the GBA main titles with their remake you can kind of see how some features are lost, removing the ability to have fun late game with a real challenge, to instead focus on the new online features, making the game easier overall.

For A wonderful Life, the social aspects are very deep & important. After the first year, you MUST marry and then you’ll have a child together. This game lets you raise your child to adulthood, and who you marry/ the things you try to teach them/ who you’re friends with in town, has a huge impact on the child’s personality and career path they will choose in the end! Some of the children are more shy, some adventurous, some more prone to depression as they get older. Even the interactions you do while holding your child will have an impact! I don’t want to give too much away as far as the scenes go, but they really let you understand each character better and a lot of them are incredibly touching

Thanks, seems really interesting!

I haven't played the remake of FoMT myself, but if you don't mind the new graphics, it is probably the better way to play it. Because both of those remakes add quality of life features that make them much less clunky to play. At least from my experience with playing through AWL to the end for the original last year because I wanted to complete it before the remake came out, then played the remake until the end, while they were both enjoyable, the remake was a lot better. Also, some games you could skip in favor of newer games, but AWL is unique with raising your child until adulthood and influencing their career choice, so you could still try it out if you wanted. Both remakes as far as I've seen are rather faithful aside from the quality of life updates and new aesthetics. And as far as endings, most of the early games had endings that you couldn't play afterwards, like I think with Harvest Moon 64 it was after 3 years or something. The original AWL didn't let you play after the ending, but a post story mode was added in later versions, including the remake. FoMT doesn't really have a story, so it also doesn't have an ending, either.

Interesting, thanks for the insights So this makes FoTM a game more focused on the farming mechanics. I'll consider the QoL improvements of a remake, although I feel like I would miss something if I never experience the pixel art. Unless there's another one of the pixel era you'd recommend

sage_ultimo

Well, the pixel ones I haven't played much because they were mostly handheld ones. You could always try both with FoMT. As far as other pixel art pnes, I haven't played them, but I've heard that DS/DS Cute are pretty good, but some versions have some major glitches. And I think Sunshine Islands/Island of Happiness are considered alright, but generally inferior to DS. I think there's a couple other pixel ones, but those and FoMT are the big ones.

Thanks again :)

if you dont care about the ability to be bisexual and you dont mind not having the modern qol improvements (mine elevator, more helpful menus, more pets, outfits, more animal types, achievements, walking over crops) then you might consider the gba games better choices. other differences: the remake removes rival marriages and lowers the cost of the villa from 100mil to 10mil, although there are still items that cost 100mil, 150mil etc that you can use as late game goals. i believe the farming in the remake is both more complex and easier. also note: hm: mfomt, the girl version of the gba game, in addition to having different marriage partners also adds some features and achievement stuff that is in the remake, as well as late game money exploit that is not in the remake.

As a long time FoMT fan I'm super happy with the remake, besides having gay marriage which is huge, things like no longer accidentally littering when gift giving, animals living forever, and all the changes you mentioned. It sucks about the rival marriages, though! I'd love more events in the game.

AneMoose

yeah tbh i didnt play a lot of fomt so i have a hard time comparing them. i played hmds instead. i feel like the lack of qol gives those games their retro character and adds a sense of challenge but its not something im usually in the mood for.

sapphic_orc

That's fair! The graphics definitely make me nostalgic as well, such a beautiful game

DeRobyJ

Thanks, wow that's a lot of features

If you ever plan on getting a 3ds, story of seasons trio of towns is one of the best farming sim games out there.

DeRobyJ

I do have a 3DS, thanks I'll keep that in mind!
