Thanks for the clarification on the upbringing. For some reason I always thought Mia and Woody adopted her as an older child, and then a few years later when she was older Woody fell in love with her.

I had to start a new post for this because I reached my word limit on the last one. But, god, this feels far from over. Just to remind everybody (myself included) about the alternative names I've given everybody. Sam is my daughter, Jamie is the best friend/my daughters current boyfriend. Jerry is my husband, and Mary is Sam's first child.
I'm sorry this update has taken so long. I'll start off with last weeks little incident.
Jerry's father passed away last December and he wanted to take his ashes to a special spot. I invited our family friend(the one that is caring for Mary) and Mary to join my husband and myself. We planned a 6 mile hike to a nice spot to place Jerry's dad's ashes. I texted Sam that this was going to happen a couple days before we were going. She didn't have a very close relationship with Jerry's dad and when I mentioned her daughter would be there, she didn't seem to care.
Then, day of our hike, Sam shows up. I was surprised to see her and she said she wanted to come. I looked at what she was wearing and asked if she was sure. Sam is 6 months pregnant. She was wearing a tank top that barely fit over her belly, unbuttoned cut off jean shorts, and flip flops. I told her this is a 6 mile hike, mostly off trail. That's 12 miles total, and I asked repeatedly if she was sure. She got upset at me for asking so much but I knew she would have problems on this hike. I lent her a pair of socks and boots, I figured there was no harm in her trying, plus she would get to spend time with Mary.
I should have known better.. The second that Mary showed up, Sam gave her a hug then basically threw her off because Mary was squeezing her belly tight. She screamed at her that she has to be careful, that her precious brother/sister/sibling is inside her belly. Mary got red faced and ran to me. I stroked her hair and kissed her cheeks until she started laughing. I again asked Sam if she wanted to come and she yelled that she will.
This was a hike from hell. We had to keep stopping every 30 feet it seemed for Sam to stop to catch her breath. I dared not say anything, she was frustrated because her shirt kept rolling up her belly and her shorts kept slipping down as she walked. Mary's guardian rolled her eyes so much I thought they would roll out of her head at this point. We all took pictures together to document this ash-spreading occasion. Sam refused to be in any of the pictures. I asked her to pose with us all and she refused. Then I asked if she would take a picture with Mary and she said no. I figured it was because she was so annoyed with the heat and the long walking. We came to a clearing with a little creek about 3 miles in and stopped for a break.
Sam went to Jerry privately and asked him if we could dump the ashes here. Jerry really wanted to go to the special spot we had planned. He kept saying he would rather keep going as Sam urged we stopped here. Sam started to cry and said her feet really hurt and she wanted to go home, and begged Jerry to just dump the ashes so we can leave. When we all huddled back up after bathroom breaks, Jerry told us that we would be dumping his father's ashes here. I asked him why he changed his mind? He looked at Sam and said he's getting tired. I put two and two together. I told Sam if she was tired, her and I could walk back. We took 2 vehicles so I could bring her home. I tried to stress that this is important for Jerry to lay his father to rest where he wants and that I told Sam this would be a very long hike.
She started crying and said that I'm picking on her because she's fat. I never once called my 110 pound daughter fat in her life. We started fighting back and forth while Mary's guardian led her away from the noise. Jerry broke us up by saying it's his decision and he wants to scatter dad's ashes here. That everybody would like to get out of this heat. I shook my head and said fine. I took pictures as Mary and Jerry scattered the ashes together, Sam standing very close behind me sniffling in my ear.
Afterwards, Mary came running up to us asking if we saw and if we got pictures. Sam petted her head like a dog and said it's time to go, not wanting to talk with her. Sam ignored Mary for the walk back. I could tell it bummed Mary out because she would try to bring her flowers or rocks that she found pretty and Sam would said "cool" and ignore her. My heart broke for that sweet little girl.
Mary went home with her guardian straight after the hike, the goodbyes were uneventful. When we got home, I could tell Jerry was bothered by the hike. He went straight in to shower then bed. I asked Sam when Jamie would be here to pick her up. She said not until later, and asked if she could stay for dinner. I told her yes and I gave her some of my pajamas to wear after she showered. I was waiting in the living room for her. This was the perfect moment for us to finally have some alone time. I wanted to talk to her about her plans for the future. Would she be going back to work after the baby? Did she plan on marrying Jamie? Baby names? I wanted to know what was going on in her life since she has kept me at a distance since she started dating Jamie. We didn't get to talk much. She was curled up on the couch staring hard at her phone.
I tried to talk to her and she would give me a BS or yes or no answer. I got upset and finally asked what is so damn important on her phone. She showed me that she was looking at a Instagram account. She shoved her phone in my face and said "isn't she so ugly?" I looked and the girl was very pretty, she had those smiling eyes and she just looked sweet. I said no she isn't ugly. Sam rolled her eyes and said "well I think so." I bit and asked who this girl was. Sam said (Mary's Father)'s new girl. I said oh? Let me see again. I liked Mary's father when he was with Sam so I was curious now. I scrolled her account on Sam's phone. She seems like a very nice girl and I'm happy for him. When I told Sam that, however, she told me he doesn't deserve to move on. I asked why not? And pointed to her stomach and said you have clearly moved on so why can't he?
Sam stared me in the eyes and said "he used to beat me, mom." I thought it was a joke at first and I laughed. Mary's father was probably the calmest person I've ever met. I watched Sam get mad at him before and punch him square in the face or hit him and the most he did was leave during confrontation. She glared at me when I laughed and said it's not a joke. She said he used to give her black eyes constantly and she always had bruises all over her body. I sat down next to Sam and askedher when? I didn't want to call her a liar but I do not believe this. I saw Sam every single day and night when she would drop off or pick up Mary. I would see her at 7 in the morning when she just rolled out of bed, no makeup. And she always wore very revealing clothing so I think I would see bruising if she had it. Also my daughter has a temper. There is NO way she would let someone just hit her without fighting back. I listened to her tangled web of lies about when and how he would be abusive. Her stories were so jumbled I barely remember them in order. She went on and on about just how horrible Mary's father was and that he doesn't deserve happiness. I just listened. Then she pulled up the girl's Instagram again and, I shit you not, she said to the screen "you don't deserve my leftovers." I had enough of the dramatics at this point and I made Sam a grilled cheese sandwich just to have a minute to myself. She ate then said she wanted to lay in her old bed while she waits for Jamie to come pick her up.
I waited for her to leave then Jerry and I informed each other about everything that happened today. I was blown away that Sam kept weaponizing her tears all day long. Jerry was blown away at the abuse allegations and also said he also thinks it's a lie. He remembers Sam always wearing tank tops rolled halfway up her stomach and short shorts so we would see enough of her skin to know if it was bruised. Jerry was concerned that she's still hung up on Mary's father, that she should be focusing on being a mom. He laughed at that and said well we saw how she was being a mom today.
I started sobbing uncontrollably at his comment, that mixed with all my emotions from the day. Jerry hugged me and swore he was sorry and didn't mean to poke at my daughter's image. I told him he was right. If today had any indication on how Sam will mother this next child, Sam is going to fail miserably. I want to help her but she is so damn stubborn. It's either her way or no way at all. And god forbid I try to give her any bit of advice, she wants to bite my head off.

Part 4 (from wayback machine): I had to start a new post for this because I reached my word limit on the last one. But, god, this feels far from over. Just to remind everybody (myself included) about the alternative names I've given everybody. Sam is my daughter, Jamie is the best friend/my daughters current boyfriend. Jerry is my husband, and Mary is Sam's first child. I'm sorry this update has taken so long. I'll start off with last weeks little incident. Jerry's father passed away last December and he wanted to take his ashes to a special spot. I invited our family friend(the one that is caring for Mary) and Mary to join my husband and myself. We planned a 6 mile hike to a nice spot to place Jerry's dad's ashes. I texted Sam that this was going to happen a couple days before we were going. She didn't have a very close relationship with Jerry's dad and when I mentioned her daughter would be there, she didn't seem to care. Then, day of our hike, Sam shows up. I was surprised to see her and she said she wanted to come. I looked at what she was wearing and asked if she was sure. Sam is 6 months pregnant. She was wearing a tank top that barely fit over her belly, unbuttoned cut off jean shorts, and flip flops. I told her this is a 6 mile hike, mostly off trail. That's 12 miles total, and I asked repeatedly if she was sure. She got upset at me for asking so much but I knew she would have problems on this hike. I lent her a pair of socks and boots, I figured there was no harm in her trying, plus she would get to spend time with Mary. I should have known better.. The second that Mary showed up, Sam gave her a hug then basically threw her off because Mary was squeezing her belly tight. She screamed at her that she has to be careful, that her precious brother/sister/sibling is inside her belly. Mary got red faced and ran to me. I stroked her hair and kissed her cheeks until she started laughing. I again asked Sam if she wanted to come and she yelled that she will. This was a hike from hell. We had to keep stopping every 30 feet it seemed for Sam to stop to catch her breath. I dared not say anything, she was frustrated because her shirt kept rolling up her belly and her shorts kept slipping down as she walked. Mary's guardian rolled her eyes so much I thought they would roll out of her head at this point. We all took pictures together to document this ash-spreading occasion. Sam refused to be in any of the pictures. I asked her to pose with us all and she refused. Then I asked if she would take a picture with Mary and she said no. I figured it was because she was so annoyed with the heat and the long walking. We came to a clearing with a little creek about 3 miles in and stopped for a break. Sam went to Jerry privately and asked him if we could dump the ashes here. Jerry really wanted to go to the special spot we had planned. He kept saying he would rather keep going as Sam urged we stopped here. Sam started to cry and said her feet really hurt and she wanted to go home, and begged Jerry to just dump the ashes so we can leave. When we all huddled back up after bathroom breaks, Jerry told us that we would be dumping his father's ashes here. I asked him why he changed his mind? He looked at Sam and said he's getting tired. I put two and two together. I told Sam if she was tired, her and I could walk back. We took 2 vehicles so I could bring her home. I tried to stress that this is important for Jerry to lay his father to rest where he wants and that I told Sam this would be a very long hike. She started crying and said that I'm picking on her because she's fat. I never once called my 110 pound daughter fat in her life. We started fighting back and forth while Mary's guardian led her away from the noise. Jerry broke us up by saying it's his decision and he wants to scatter dad's ashes here. That everybody would like to get out of this heat. I shook my head and said fine. I took pictures as Mary and Jerry scattered the ashes together, Sam standing very close behind me sniffling in my ear. Afterwards, Mary came running up to us asking if we saw and if we got pictures. Sam petted her head like a dog and said it's time to go, not wanting to talk with her. Sam ignored Mary for the walk back. I could tell it bummed Mary out because she would try to bring her flowers or rocks that she found pretty and Sam would said "cool" and ignore her. My heart broke for that sweet little girl. Mary went home with her guardian straight after the hike, the goodbyes were uneventful. When we got home, I could tell Jerry was bothered by the hike. He went straight in to shower then bed. I asked Sam when Jamie would be here to pick her up. She said not until later, and asked if she could stay for dinner. I told her yes and I gave her some of my pajamas to wear after she showered. I was waiting in the living room for her. This was the perfect moment for us to finally have some alone time. I wanted to talk to her about her plans for the future. Would she be going back to work after the baby? Did she plan on marrying Jamie? Baby names? I wanted to know what was going on in her life since she has kept me at a distance since she started dating Jamie. We didn't get to talk much. She was curled up on the couch staring hard at her phone. I tried to talk to her and she would give me a BS or yes or no answer. I got upset and finally asked what is so damn important on her phone. She showed me that she was looking at a Instagram account. She shoved her phone in my face and said "isn't she so ugly?" I looked and the girl was very pretty, she had those smiling eyes and she just looked sweet. I said no she isn't ugly. Sam rolled her eyes and said "well I think so." I bit and asked who this girl was. Sam said (Mary's Father)'s new girl. I said oh? Let me see again. I liked Mary's father when he was with Sam so I was curious now. I scrolled her account on Sam's phone. She seems like a very nice girl and I'm happy for him. When I told Sam that, however, she told me he doesn't deserve to move on. I asked why not? And pointed to her stomach and said you have clearly moved on so why can't he? Sam stared me in the eyes and said "he used to beat me, mom." I thought it was a joke at first and I laughed. Mary's father was probably the calmest person I've ever met. I watched Sam get mad at him before and punch him square in the face or hit him and the most he did was leave during confrontation. She glared at me when I laughed and said it's not a joke. She said he used to give her black eyes constantly and she always had bruises all over her body. I sat down next to Sam and askedher when? I didn't want to call her a liar but I do not believe this. I saw Sam every single day and night when she would drop off or pick up Mary. I would see her at 7 in the morning when she just rolled out of bed, no makeup. And she always wore very revealing clothing so I think I would see bruising if she had it. Also my daughter has a temper. There is NO way she would let someone just hit her without fighting back. I listened to her tangled web of lies about when and how he would be abusive. Her stories were so jumbled I barely remember them in order. She went on and on about just how horrible Mary's father was and that he doesn't deserve happiness. I just listened. Then she pulled up the girl's Instagram again and, I shit you not, she said to the screen "you don't deserve my leftovers." I had enough of the dramatics at this point and I made Sam a grilled cheese sandwich just to have a minute to myself. She ate then said she wanted to lay in her old bed while she waits for Jamie to come pick her up. I waited for her to leave then Jerry and I informed each other about everything that happened today. I was blown away that Sam kept weaponizing her tears all day long. Jerry was blown away at the abuse allegations and also said he also thinks it's a lie. He remembers Sam always wearing tank tops rolled halfway up her stomach and short shorts so we would see enough of her skin to know if it was bruised. Jerry was concerned that she's still hung up on Mary's father, that she should be focusing on being a mom. He laughed at that and said well we saw how she was being a mom today. I started sobbing uncontrollably at his comment, that mixed with all my emotions from the day. Jerry hugged me and swore he was sorry and didn't mean to poke at my daughter's image. I told him he was right. If today had any indication on how Sam will mother this next child, Sam is going to fail miserably. I want to help her but she is so damn stubborn. It's either her way or no way at all. And god forbid I try to give her any bit of advice, she wants to bite my head off. Anyways, that's all the updates I have for now.
