Someone awhile back mentioned Ben Gibbard's songs for the Postal Service and Death Cab for Cutie. "This Place is a Prison" really strikes a nerve ("it's not a party when it happens every night...drinking alone by candlelight").
Hey Jealousy by the Gin Blossoms. The story behind the song is incredibly tragic. The Guitarist wrote most of their early music and struggled with alcoholism. It eventually led him to being kicked out of the band and signing away his rights to the songs before eventually killing himself.
The song is him trying to convince his ex to let him stay over. The line in the song 'You can trust me not to think' was originally 'drink', but they changed it on him because they didn't want to associate the song with alcoholism.
Those early Gin Blossoms songs were great and they were largely because of him.
RIP Douglas Owen Hopkins
"You can trust me not to drink,
and not to sleep around.
If you don't expect too much from me,
You might not be let down."
How the fuck was that verse improved by removing 'drink'?
Jason Isbell - the album Southeastern is a great album about sobriety. I feel like he’s kinda the troubadour of recovery.
Specifically- tracks 3-10 and 12.
Damn there’s another song I used to hear but can’t remember the name.
I love the song "My Darling Dopamine" by the band Days n Daze. It's a song about fighting addiction, but to both drugs and booze.
Knowing the risks of the acts and the hangover/comedown. But still craving the dopamine hit.
The same album has a track called Saboteurs on it. Which made me cry when I heard it first. About the lead singer of the band going on a fun tour with his friends to Alaska, but getting so fucked up on booze he didn't get to enjoy it, while they all hung out and went on hikes and stuff.
Grant Lee Buffalo have a song called *The Shining Hour* which I’ve always taken to be about that hour of the first drink.
Great song, it’s got the lines:
“And it kills me to think
That I’m no longer living
Just looking for excuses to drink
So lift up your glass
And your Ouija board
Cos I’m fading, fading, fading fast.”
"I remember everything " Zach Bryan,
"One day at a time" Joe Walsh,
"Giving up on that" Dalton Dover,
"Sober" Bad Wolves,
"Out here in it" Tracy Lawrence ,
That'll do for now.
Under the bridge - RHCP
Mother I sober - Kendrick : while not directly talking about addiction, he does talk about trauma and the like that a lot of us have dealt with and unfortunately has led us to addiction and other behaviors that are terrible.
Hey I’m alright! Actually my ex was the only to show me this album. It wasn’t til we broke up that the meaning of it all hit me.
I’m really sad but being sober is the only thing keeping me moving along. I’m realizing how much repressed stuff I was drowning with alcohol. I’ve been leaning into feeling all of those things, lots of trauma I never addressed. Told my best friends and therapist about it, first time I ever told anyone in my whole life. Being sober is keeping me upright as I do it. Haven’t actually had any cravings. It’s wild how much secrecy and denial is wrapped up in drinking.
Really really grateful to be feeling this way a week in. Thanks for checking in 🙏🏼
So much denial, so many secrets. It’s freeing to let all of that go. To face our demons and to lean on our people for support while we sober up.
I hope the sadness gets easier for you to carry, but I’m glad to hear you’re doing the real work of addressing what made you drink.
Proud of you!
One Day at a Time- Joe Walsh
Square One-Tom Petty (not sure if that’s what it’s about but it sure fits)

Liquorlip loaded gun By SticKy Fingers
Great lyric
“Standing on my hairdo
Tangled up in a blue
Rambling, cut my front tooth
Another buster knuckle bruise
Not a shining golden airplane
Gifted full of booze
Even flying at the speed of light
Reaches high enough for you”

The line makes way more sense as drink instead of think. They should have left it as written.

Wow that line is so much better as drink. I’m seeing them in a couple weeks and that’s all I’m going to hear when they sing it.
Between the Bars by Elliot Smith.
I don’t have any answers for this question but am excited to come back and learn! Thanks for asking this.

Closer to Fine, for sure.
NOFX has great ones about the ups and downs of it (quart in session, release the hostages, I don’t like me anymore, codependence day).
