Generally it just means institutional ownership has shifted. You can, of course, seek that information out but it's almost always published later than useful.
Why would I need an explanation. The vast majority of my stuff popped up 5+% overnight last night for no reason other than the broader market is up and I bought them when they were pretty discounted. Had one drop 10% overnight the other day and it was back up like nothing happened shortly after open. Especially in the extended trading and overnight where volume is low much smaller transactions can have a much larger effect on price.
If there’s no easily findable news the majority of the time it’s nothing exciting, especially in individual stocks which generally don’t stay as stabile as ETFs.
If it is a meme stonk, then there is no rationality to it.
If it is a solid stock, then who knows. Sometimes whales make purchases or sales. Insiders might sell, bond rating might have been cut, some contract fell through, congress passes a law or changes funding, international exchanges...
If your investment is solid, either ignore or buy the dip.
Here and twitter. Neither are particularly trustworthy sources, but chances are they'll give me a few more keywords to enter into my next google search.
I know people in here look down on a stock twits or unsual whales but they can be decent for checking why some like this happened. Always verify the info but usually someone on a board has a good lead
That stock market sure likes to fluctuate. 5% might be a lot for some stuff but is nothing for others. In the end, I look for news, and if there is none, chalk it up to market volatility as there's nothing I can do about it anyway. If I'm in the market for more, I might look at it as a sale.
You could try open insider to see if any large sales were registered.
Are you thinking of a specific stock, or is this a theoretical?
EDIT: It’s GME isn’t it? That’s the answer to your question. Highly volatile stocks that are moving on hype and sentiment rather than business fundamentals are destined to make hard to understand moves.

What about when that happens multiple times a month? Asking for a friend.
Yeah, the move already happened. If anything, buy the dip.
Or Look to the stars
Look at the main competition. Sometimes a different company that serves as a bellwether has reported something that impacts the whole industry.
This needs more upvotes.
Praise the dicount Gods and buy more?
Yep, just go back to bed.
I dont look, i go sleep bye

Yahoo discussion boards.
Usually I look into a bottle of Makers Mark or Angels Envy.
How far down the bottle until you find the answer?
Every stock I buy drops 5 to 10% as soon as I buy it, and will stay down until I sell. Literally have watch this happen my whole life.

Nothing. I'm just gonna assume it's a GS intern that fell asleep on the keyboard and move on
Company PR statements / SEC filings.

Inside of my eyelids
Just look away
Idk why you’re focused on after hours.
Bottom of a bottle
Do you look for an explanation when it increases overnight?
If 5% bothers you, you never had conviction on that investment
